Who’s Getting What This Week?

Posted: April 26, 2010 in Dark Horse, DC Comics, Image, Marvel, Radical Publishing

Another issue of Invincible so soon? Niiiiice. Some pretty decent stuff coming out this week. Here’s what I’ll be buying on Wednesday:

Deadpool #22 (Hrrmmm…kinda get tired of this book. I’ll give it two issues to win me back)
Fantastic Four #578 (Johnathan Hickman)
Green Lantern Corps #47
Guild #2
Invincible #71
Last Days of American Crime #2
Secret Warriors #15 (Jonathan Hickman)
Thunderbolts #143 (Jeff Parker, the Siege tie-in book that is better than the Siege miniseries)
Wonder Woman #43

So, ya, quite pleased with this week’s shipment of comics. I will try my damnedest to have some capsule reviews for these books done by the end of the week. If not at least you’ll probably have some Ironmuskrat reviews to read. That guy has really been saving this blog’s ass lately.

So, what is everyone else buying?

J.

It feels good that once again comic book day is right around the corner with a healthy dose of SCALPED! along with that I will be getting:

Detective Comics #864 (since Jock started I haven’t liked the story line so much, so I may be dropping soon depending on creative team.)

Jack of Fables #45 (I have a feeling the regular Jack is coming back soon, and I am going to miss Jack Frost.)

Captain America #605 (I’m sticking with Ed.)

Deadpool #22 (I always laugh, every time. but don’t be fooled any other Deadpool book out sucks. Stick with Way.)

Fantastic Four #578 (You are dumb if your not picking this up.)

Last Days of American Crime #2 (Cool concept, and nice to have a real big book for $4.99)

But really all that matters is Scalped.

    Invincible #71

And I might get Last Days of American Crime #2 at the shop but I got #1 sitting over there unread so I’ll have to read it first.

A week filled with maybes and maybe not’s…

No DC comics this week for me? Could be,I am having a hard time getting interested in a Detective Comics without Rucka or Williams. It doesn’t help that a CBR preview of this issue was less than inspiring.

Detective Comics #864 – A big maybe this week.

Fantastic Four #578 – A no brainer for me, Hickman is doing an an amazing job here, but I do wish Ben Grimm would punch someone in the face soon.

Invincible Iron Man #25 – $3.99? Really, I like what has been happening on this book, but if this issue has a pile of Wikipadding at the end that is suppose to justify the higher price, I won’t be buying. Another big maybe this week for me.

Thunderbolts #143 – I am officially on the bandwagon. Parker is writing the only ‘Siege’ related book that I have any interest in. Parker is such a good writer, he actually made me give a shit about USAgent. I am very curious as to how this current incarnation of Thunderbolts meets it’s end.

Last Days of American Crime #2 – I remember liking this book when I read the first issue back seemingly a year ago, wow! take your time guys =)

So that is it this week, three for sure books and two maybes. I hate to go a week with at least getting one DC book, so if someone has a suggestion for a good DC book, let me know.

  11. DidioForever says:

Apologies for the massive post…Hah hah

The only new titles I’ll be getting as ASM and Mighty Avengers. I’ve already ranted about the former, but as for

MA…I must say that I’ve really loved this title but reading the last couple of issues has been pretty agonising.

I think Slott has been using certain characters/scenarios to address personal/public/extrinsic issues surrounding the book. Let me explain:

    *Internets/fanbois growing tired of Slott’s Pym-love = Quicksilver’s snarky comments a few issues back
*The big boys (Bendis, Q and Fraction) blocking Slott’s Avengers = Thor (AVENGUR PRIME!) disapproving of Pym’s antics
*Also see USAgent being stripped of rank, a pretty pointlessly mopey/ineffectual plot device which could have been some kind of expression of how Slott felt about getting his run cut short by Siege and the new Avengurz landscape.

I mean, I follow Slott’s twitter…He seems in denial to me. He’s always going on about how “lucky” he feels to be “allowed” to write for Marvel, but surely he’s got to be pissed about not being able to continue his Hank Pym epic?

Take the scene with those G.R.A.N.D.P.A. agents last month where he revealed that the MA had spent some period of time in space aiding the Inhumans against a Kree invasion…?!? Clearly a story arc he’d plotted but had to cut out.

I’ve loved his run on Mighty Avengers, and if this really had to end then I wish that he could have at least been allowed to ignore Siege entirely and finish with a more fleshed out, fulfilling arc. Between Siege, the death of Herc and the Thunderbolts crossover, the Mighty Avengers’ ‘endsong’ has happened nearly entirely off panel if you’re only reading this book.

The past 3 issues of this run have just been this bittersweet mess, a “look what could have been” with a silent, perhaps sub-conscious tinge of “Help me Dan Didio, you’re my hope…Help me Dan Didio!”

I really hope this final issue cheers me up about this.

I think your spot on about Slott and his being dropped from the Avengers line up.

Great post, man. You don’t need to apologize for length when you have something insightful to say!

      • Deemar says:

        Feeling better king?

        • littlekingryan* says:

Fit as a fucking fiddle. I need to limit my internet usage, I think I caught a technovirus or something. Sorry I didn’t catch up with you yesterday. I didn’t even look at my email til 3 in the morning.

          • Deemar says:

            Glad ya better

Time to get some Norton anti-virus!

Yeah I couldn’t sleep, I missed Tomdevine last night as soon as I was going to bed finally he got on the chat.

  13. Smallmaniac says:

Invincible Iron Man #25, but I DEMAND that whatever makes this a “double sized” issue isn’t some “previously on” crap or anything like that. I want story, story, story. Or I may just go and buy some music instead. I can get a used copy of OK Computer for $5. I’m really just waiting for the Zatanna ongoing.

  14. littlekingryan* says:

Well, aside from all the Free Comic Book-y Day-ey Goodness on Saturday, if they still have copies, I’ll be buying:
    Invincible #71
    Invincible Iron Man #25
    Fantastic Four #578
Ultimate Comics Avengers 2 #1 (Yes, yes, I know…but Leinil Yu’s art is still worth the price of admission for me. I’ve collected a lot of the guy’s stuff. Found a bunch of Superman: Birthright at Half Price Books for 50 cents apiece last weekend…score!)

      • Pobra says:

It’s the cluster-bomb of Superman books that are weighing down your stack dude. Fucking crossovers…

        • Constantanius says:

Yeah I picked up Supergirl #52 last week, and when I got home I realized the beginning of the story is in Adventure Comics #10 or something, so still sitting there unread

          • generaldark says:

i gave up on superman till JMS comes on board. these crossovers and robinson writing is too much for me.

  17. Deemar says:

Oh yeah who wants to do a chat tonight?

If so lets do it in 4hrs time, wanna get some drawing done before then.

    Who in?

    • littlekingryan* says:

I’m in. I should probably maybe do some drawing, too. Every now and then I become afraid of my drawing table. It wants me to make shitty art. I try to resist.

      • Deemar says:

Lol I know the feeling, luckily I’m so stubborn I push through the doubt. (maybe why my art turns out shitty sometimes lmao)

Alrighty LKR down for tonight see you in 4
