If you’ve been following our reviews on the CCW channel, you’d know that I’ve recently gotten into reading the Scott Pilgrim series from Oni Press.
Vol. 3 finally showed up at Dreamland comics this past week and after enjoying parts 1 and 2 so much, I made it part of my ‘must read’ pile.
Well, I’m gonna chalk this one up to a case of high expectations, cuz while I liked the book, I didn’t like vol. 3 as much as I did the previous 2. Don’t get me wrong, Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness has all the great quirky elements that have become part and parcel of the series: angst, romance, humor, kung-fu fights and video game references. I just think that Bryan Lee O’Malley got a wee bit too clever with his storytelling technique in this volume. Peppered with flashbacks that sometimes are not easily distinguished from the regular narrative, I found myself back-tracking from time to time to deduce just what happened when.
As for the story…
Vol. 3 finds Scott dealing with the problem of having to face the 3rd of Ramona Flowers’ ‘evil ex-boyfriends,’ who also happens to be dating one of Scott’s own exes. Complicating matters is the fact that Ramona’s ex is a vegan and in world of Scott Pilgrim, being a vegan grants you psychic powers, making him near unbeatable in Scott’s eyes. (As someone who works with a vegan or two at the office, I THANK GOD that this isn’t true. It’s bad enough that they look down on me when I eat my turkey sandwich…)
So, continuing the theme that Scott Pilgrim’s life is like a giant video game and Ramona’s exes are ‘bosses’ that he must battle to complete a ‘level’ in their relationship, Scott must figure out a way to beat a guy who is a psychic vegan and is dating his ex-girlfriend who he’s still hung up on and a superior musician to boot.
How does Scott beat this guy? How does he come to terms with the fact that his ex-girlfriend not only broke his heart by leaving him but was also cheating on him while they were dating? Why does Envy, the ex, still have an axe to grind against Scott when she was the one who did the leaving? What happens to a vegan’s powers when they eat gelato?
For the answer to these and many other questions, you’ll just have to read the book.
The question I have is will the series regain it’s momentum in the next volume? Well I guess I’ll have the answer to that question when I pick up Volume 4 at Dreamland Comics this weekend!
