The most prestigious award in comics!

Alright folks, the time has come!  Time to cast YOUR VOTE for the “Golden Loeb Award”!  Remember, the Loeb goes to what the CCW Nation thinks was the WORST THING of 2009!

Jose and I went through all the nominees, and had a tough time weeding it down, but here are the FINAL THREE:

    Dark Reign!

  2. Chris says:

I really don’t think it should be Dark Reign out of those books. On the whole its been rubbish, but Dark Reign Elektra and the American Son Spider-Man arc make it infinitely (I could probably come up with an actual figure if I were pressed for one) better than Battle for the Cowl. I think people may have forgotten how bad that was.

PS The Old Man Logan finale was also worse than Dark Reign

  3. Deemar says:

    Dark Reign definately DR

Battle for the Cowl was only three issues and Old Man Logan had Steve McNiven art proping Millar up, DR was a year long crapfest with whiteman cornrolls.

  4. Dan Griffin says:

Old Man Logan, for a shitty story and shitty art.

    • Deemar says:

      You kidding right, shitty art?

Don’t go blaming McNiven for Millar’s garbage story.

      • Dan Griffin says:

Nope, i’m not a big fan of McNiven.

        • I got your back on this one Dan. McNiven is one of the most, if not THE MOST, overrated artists in comics today.

          J.

          • Deemar says:

Guy draws just fine to me and he got some damn good line work and backgrounds.

This whole ‘hating on whatever artist is working with Millar this week’ pattern boggles the mind. You got guys out there who used to love John Romita Jr and now can’t stand him for Kick-Ass.

Yeah there current output is lackluster, but the one constant in that suckage is Mark Millar not the actual art. Neither of these guys McNiven/Romita are Tony Daniel or Liefeld we may not like their comics at the moment and there is an actual beef with how slow the output, but the art it self?

Nah..it’s solid regardless of the writer they work with.

  5. I haven’t read Old Man Logan so I have no say in that.

I had a tough time deciding between BFTC and Dark Reign, but I finally decided Dark Reign because Dark Reign was a year long “event” that spawned several unneeded mini-series w/ $3.99 price points for no reason. There was no reason for all the de-compression that DR had. The only good DR stuff was Invincible Iron Man, ASM, Deadpool, and Dark Reign: FF.

BFTC was only 3 months. It was quick but painful, but it was only three months and this event gave us awesome Batman books like Batman and Robin, Streets of Gotham, Winick’s 5 issue run, etc.

  6. Pobra says:

I say BFTC because I like Steve McNiven and there have been some good stories to come out of DR.

  7. Dan says:

You know, how is Final Crisis not on this list? Rest assured, all the ones here suck in there own right, but let’s not forget the “meta” train wreak that Grant Morrison spewed on us all several months ago.

Anyway, that’s my vote (and yes, I read the whole thing, with Superman and Batman tie ins. Because I hate myself I guess)

    • These were the Top 3 choices from the reader poll we ran all last month. I think only one or two people voted for Final Crisis in that.

      J.

      • Dan says:

Well, at least I don’t feel bad for not voting before then, as much like voting for Ross Perot over Kang or Kodos, i would have been just throwing my vote away.

Even though, hands down, it was clearly the worst comic event of the year.

Then I will vote for Old Man Logan, since I didn’t read it, and I fear the unknown.

        • Don’t get me wrong, I thought Final Crisis for the most part was full of fail too. You should read my Old Man Logan Finale review of you haven’t read the comic. You’ll find out all about what you weren’t missing.

          J.

          • phil says:

I know that we’ve gone back and forth on OML, Jose, but while I’m pretty much the lone guy sitting on a log, in shark infested waters 😉 I can’t debate the finale of this comic. I’ve lost track of how many times that I’ve referred to it as Lone Wolv and ‘Ulk. This is probably the 3rd or 4th time on this site, alone.
While Blackest Night is my number 2 comics event, OMl even with its WTF ending still made my top 10. Uh-oh, part of my log broke off. Anyway before I’m turned into chum: the kind that AdamWest’s Batman was not referring to when he called Robin, old chum, I wanted to say thank you again, I see that you’ve goy me on your friends of the show link….much appreciated!!!
Well, before I start talking up the good points of Cry 4 Justice…I’ll take my leave.

            k…o…

  8. Mitiators says:

I may be in the minority on this one, but I really dig McNiven’s art. But no artist could have saved that last issue of OML. It was like trying to polish a turd. I felt really dirty after reading it. It was like Millar got two of my favorite characters drunk and forced them to have sex then videotaped it and showed it to the whole world. Dang.

    • Ah, your comment is full of win Mitiators. Win, win, win.

      J.

    • Pobra says:

I kinda liked OML myself, mostly due to McNiven’s involvement, but that last issue was really quite awful. I’m actually slightly ashamed of having bought it. If it wasn’t for McNiven doing all the heavy lifting on this book, I don’t think it would have gotten half the attention it’s received. It had fuck all for a script and what it did have wasn’t very good. I think guys like Miller and Loeb are surviving off of the artists that they are fortunate enough to get to work with. At least that’s what I hope.

  9. TheShadowQuestion says:

    I vote for

    Dark Reign

    Final Crisis

Two of the worst story events ever.

  10. Linwood E. Knight says:

I really wish that Cry For Justice would’ve made it to the final 3. I wouldn’t have to really think about who to vote for this opprobrious honor.

However, that was not meant to be, and I had to take a couple of minutes and really think about what deserved this disreputable award.

I thought about the Old Man Logan Finale, and then I asked myself a few questions, which included…”Did I really hate Old Man Logan that much?” and “Was it in the top 10 worst comic books you read this year?” The answer to both was no, so it gets disqualified on the fact that I simply had the misfortune of reading worse comics this year (Batgirl #1, Cry For Justice, Uncanny X-Men #516….)

Then I came to Dark Reign, and I had to really weigh this bad boy, because I though the damn thing was directionless heap in many different areas, but at the end, I had no problems disqualifying this. If I voted for Dark Reign, it’s also a vote for the Agents of Atlas, Incredible Hercules, Secret Warriors, Deadpool, Thunderbolts, Invincible Iron Man and Daredevil: The List. I couldn’t do that

As for Battle of the Cowl, this is the winner, and it came down to this reason. The Cure was probably the worst limited series I had the misfortune of reading this year, and Battle for the Cowl was one of the most disappointing events I bothered to pay attention to. The result was the one I wanted, but I felt no satisfaction. This is the kind of story that will get joked upon in the future, and even though the Bat Books recovered, Battle for the Cowl had shit to do with it. So Battle for the Cowl wins the award due to being empty space with no redeeming qualities.

    Hey Jose and Elliot

I saw you mention my comment on the show. Thanks! Cheers guys! 😀

but you got my name wrong :(, its D-a-c-l, not D-a-d
Ah well, keep up the good work 🙂

    • phil says:

Gr8 Ceasers ghost! I thoght that you might have been off your rocker with your correction, up until now thats what I thought you’re name was as well. As a matter of fact I cranked the screen image to 200%, but I still was’nt sure (not exactly the eyes of a rabbit) so I cranked it to 400%, and I was like H E dbl hockey sticks….he’s right!

I’m still bewildered……….but I gotta ask. Once you first saw you’re user name, did you not see this kinda thing coming? 🙂
