CCW Question of the Week

This week’s question:

“What are your thoughts, if any, on Image’s Guardians of the Globes teaser ads which were released this week?”

I for one think they are a bit genius and it was an interesting way to sort of mock the ridiculousness of Marvel’s Avengers teams while still managing to be fun (sorta like the Secret Avengers ads but more so). It’s great to see some comic companies still have a sense of humor, you know, instead of having the need to instigate a dick measuring contest any opportunity they get because of their feelings of inadequacy.

The best thing about these ads though? It was the fact that they raised to ire of the Marvel Zombies and that will always be a good thing in my book.

So, obviously these ads were a joke but Robert Kirmkan has announced that there will be a Guardians of the Globe six issue mini series that he will be co-writing starting in August. The actual individuals who will comprise the team will be released next week.

I personally thought the ads were pretty hilarious. A good natured dig at marvel and fun for the fans, what’s not to like?

  2. generaldark says:

well its a better line up then what the avengers will soon be thats for sure.

  3. Rob F says:

My favorite aspect of the satire is that Kirkman calls Marvel out for their biggest current offense: sacrificing story for money. Look at nearly every teaser that Marvel puts out and they don’t grab me by showing me that they are going to create a good story its more “hey, we put all your favorite heroes in a new book not to give you anything you don’t already have but just to squeeze you for more”. And the Obama quote was hilarious

  4. Deemar says:

Kirkman is a clever cat and this did it’s job, now I’m syched for GotG mini and got a good Bwa Ha Ha..

If any Marvel Zombies got their feeling hurt fuck’em, Marvel been hurting my wallet and insulting my intelligence for years Image gave them a taste of their own medicine

  5. Smallmaniac says:

Those who can take a joke will enjoy this, those who can’t will take their ball and leave the sandbox. Like we really needed their ball in the first place.

  6. SMARTASS8 says:

As someone who has always found Kirkman’s writing to be somewhat bland(not bad but overrated), I find these great(although the Harry Potter one was kind of a miss for me). Not only do they hit their target perfectly, they have shown what hypocrites the Marvel Zombies are that tell DC fans to “grow a sense of humor” anytime Marvel trashes DC(and DC didn’t even have to get their hands dirty). It makes me want to pick up a Kirkman book again just in support.

I wonder if Erik Larsen had anything to do with this? He’s been pretty public with his disdain for Marvel taking credit for the Obama covers, “ruining” Spider-Man, and some other things over the years ever since JoeyQ took over.

  7. Venom829 says:

I think it’s a joke between companies, since Image has no near the financial resources of Marvel or D.C. for that matter, it’s not a big deal, if D.C. did this, things would be very interesting.

  8. Jeremy says:

Rober Kirkman is a Mother F%CKING BASTARD…no not really. This is just a guy just having some fun. I respect that.

  9. I think they’re pretty funny and very well made. Nice to see that Kirkman ACTUALLY cares about the industry.

  10. tomstewdevine says:

I think i laughed at everyone, great idea.

  11. vegedge says:

marvel and breevhort are dicks. they always make fun of dc and do dumb shit like the blackest night cover rip off garbage. dc should fuck with them back and release teasers for secret jsa, new jsa, new new jsa, jsa academy.
or dc’s nemesis. ‘what if marvel made another rip off of batman and made him asuper villain.’
who was actually offeneded by image doing this? everyone thought it was funny that i have seen.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

While DC would be justified in doing so, I think they look a little classier by not lowering themselves to Marvel’s level.

I just read another bit where Marvel boys(Bendis and Brubaker) were writing post-its during one of their panels at the Emerald City Con to leave behind for DC whose panel followed theirs(I love how they couldn’t even pay attention at their own panel). They said things like “Captain America could kick Superman’s ass” and “You know what the world needs? More plastic rings…”. The Marvel Zombies loved that the #1 comic company was “giving it” to their lower ranking competitor but they all had fits when Image(which is #3 or #4 at best) poked fun at Marvel.

      • Morlock50 says:

The zombies can dish it out but they can’t take it. So, what the world really needs are more comics like Ultimate Avengers #5 and Dark Avengers #15, right? At least when Stan Lee talked smack in the 60’s to DC, he had great stories to back him up.

  12. thecimmerian says:

Holy shit that’s funny. It’s not really mean spirited just amusing, unlike the return the ring books promo bs that marvel did. I think this shows that more and more people are becoming fed up with marvels crap, mostly an unending stream of shitty, 32 page, $3.99 comics with big flash and no substance. I mean hell, when people in the industry start taking shots at you it might be time to re-evaluate the way you handle your shit.

  13. heckimlistening says:

I love the Harry Potter one!

  14. Ironmuskrat says:

I can’t believe people are getting pissed about this promotion. Whatever happened to comics being fun! Kirkman has come out to respond to the fanboys out there that are getting their panties in a twist about this on the CBR site.
