What do the colors GREEN and PURPLE mean in the world of comic books? i’ve noticed that most major villains have these two colors in common. Examples: the Joker, Green Goblin, Lex Luthor’s suit, Brainiac, Riddler, etc……. Where these just the artist’s favorite colors at the time they were created???
You forgot the most obvious connection: the Hulk. I’ve never understood why they always had to depict the Hulk in torn purple pants. I had a pair of purplish pants in the 80s when bright colors were hot thanks to Miami Vice, but that’s the only blemish on my otherwise stellar fashion sense.
What was even funnier was when the Hulk turned grey, then he wore blue jeans. Never purple.
Yeah when i was younger my mom would buy me those DK Ultimate Guide books from borders, and i would notice that these were the two most common colors used for villains. Spider Man’s first ten villains are all green and purple or have one or the other except for your boy Kraven the Hunter lol. But yeah i would like to know why.
Its because of the more primitive colouring techniques in the 60’s, they could get good greens and purples but muted colours ended up being murky. Thats why grey hulk became green hulk.
Well, that makes sense. But I was hoping there was some weird Davinci Code answer here, where if you stare at the colors on the page, you get transported to a different dimension, and are revealed the secrets of the universe…..I may need to cut back on drinking espresso in the morning.
i read somewhere that primary colours were used for heroes like red and blue for superman, and spider-man, red and yellow for iron man etc, and secondary ones like green and purple for villains.
A great four mini-series from the 90s that I’ve never seen in TPB is Robocop Vs. Terminator. Kinda surprising given that it was the creative team, Frank Miller and Walt Simonson, are heavyweights in the industry and the characters are fairly well known. I was just thinking that I need to dig it out of my collection.
I have a theory about Frank Miller. He has Syphilis but didn’t know about and so it went untreated. And now he is slowly going insane because of it. I have the same theory about Jeph Loeb and Brian Bendis.
I met Miller at a book signing once and I asked to take a picture with him. I’ll never forget how he needed a few seconds to compose himself and then twist his body around and do that stupid sneer he always does in every pic. Even my girlfriend was like, dude, get over yourself.
Anyway, now I’m now thinking of great stories that never got collected in TPB. How about the Masters Of Evil storyline in Avengers with Roger Stern and John Buscema?
I don’t know if it’s still in print,but they did do that one some years back.It was called Under Siege.I kinda thought that’s where BMB got the name for the current event.As far as other TPB, I would love to see the 70’s Black Panther Jungle Action stuff written by Don Mcgregor.”Panther’s Rage” or “Panther vs The Klan”.By anyone’s standards they are incredibly over written,but I think very fascinating.
Have you ever seen any of those pictures of Miller hanging out with his new Hollywood pals like Jaime King or Rosario Dawson? He looks so creepy, it reminds me of that old bit from Sesame Street, “One Of These Things Is Not Like the Other”. Right after Stan Lee, Frank Miller is my #1 pick for a forced retirement. I don’t need another Spirit or All Star Batman & Robin.
Have you ever listened to “The Spirit” commentary track? If you haven’t, grab a bottle of booze and do so. Having friends around to help mock Miller is preferable.
It’s bad enough I paid to see that movie. I can’t imagine buying/renting the DVD. Did you ever see this online where Kyle Baker attempts to defend Miller’s version of the Spirit?

I paid to see that movie too but I full well knew what I was getting into. Avi and I needed to hear the commentary on the dvd so he just got it from Netflix. There are some interviews with Miller too as extra’s that are completely ridiculous. You have to see them.
The Spirit might quite possibly be one of the worst films of the last decade. If I live to be 200, I’ll never forget that Nazi scene. What were Jackson and Johansson thinking?
Miller left out Ebony because he was offensive(he could have still used him if he worked on updating the character slightly) but he put Samuel L. Jackson in a Nazi uniform for no reason at all. The only good thing about that movie was Eva Mendes’ ass shot(and I don’t usually find her that attractive) and that girl from “Castle” was adorable as the police officer.
My God, has somebody checked on Mr Eisner’s body? He’s rolled over in his grave the day that movie put out and no one’s rolled him back since.

Frank’s one of my comic book heroes from back in the day,but I’ll admit that he’s been a little off lately.I’m surprised no one’s mentioned the interview he did w/NPR I think in 04 where he claimed Iraq declared war on the US.
Is everyone who didn’t like Kick Ass:The Comic prepared for the inevitable success of Kick Ass:The Movie? It’s going to be Bay’s 2 Transformers movies and Abram’s Star Trek all over again for me; movies I couldn’t stand but the rest of the world loved.
The reason I used the term “mediocrity” is because Matthew Vaughn is directing it so he may be able to do some good with the shit he was given to work with. Vaughn could make it watchable but I will never know because I will not go see it.
I think Kick-Ass is going to work better as a movie than a comic. Granted I still haven’t read the comic, but the trailer for the movie actually doesn’t look too bad. As long as they tone down the ultra-violence and change some of the more ridiculous aspects, it could be a half decent flick.
And I still haven’t read any Scott Pilgrim either, but after hearing that Metric is going to be supplying the music for the film, I’ve been getting more and more psyched for it. Can’t wait for a trailer!
Well star trek I liked, but I hope this movie takes off and makes like 200 million, because then maybe i could get my money back from my comics on ebay.
It was a garbage movie made for the MTV generation. Abrams demonstrated absolutely no understanding of these characters. People on here rip Loeb constantly for his refusal to adhere to any continuity. Abrams shat all over Trek continuity.
I’m not a Star Trek guy at all. I’ve seen all of the movies and 2 episodes of STNG but that’s it. I still didn’t like the movie. It had some cringe inducing “comedy”, a lot of plot holes(the 2 “writers” have supposedly explained everything in interviews but how does that help people who only watch the movie), poor designs on the aliens(I’ll take the zippered costumes and prostetics of the 60’s show over the overly cgi’ed crap in this movie), one of the blandest & most poorly developed villains I’ve seen in a long time, and wayyy too many lens flares. The only parts I really liked were Karl Urban, Bruce Greenwood, and a half-naked & green Rachel Nichols. It was better than Transformers 2 at least.
What changed in the continuity was that Kirk’s father died. That should not change the alter Spock and Uhura MAKING OUT in the elevator. Are you freakin’ kidding me? Did Abrams not get the memo about Vulcans having a cap on their emotions? Not to mention the fact that Spock had a thing for Rand, anyway.
Kirk seeing the Enterprise being built as a kid was as likely as Anakin building Threepio, and there was no indication in Wrath Of Khan that Spock invented the Kobayashi Maru.
Pike was roughly the same age as Kirk, not an old man.
And let’s not even get into the nonsense of Kirk being promoted from cadet to captain with zero experience, or being stranded on that ice planet (why didn’t Spock just throw him in the brig?) and after running from a monster that looked straight out of Attack Of The Clones, he just happens to run into old Spock. Or the fact that the main villain could not have been more dull and his motivation for going after Spock seemed rather idiotic.
There were scenes in the movie I enjoyed, and I thought some of the actors, like the guys who played Chekov and Bones, were spot-on with their performances. But, overall, it was an empty cinematic experience, full of eye candy but with very little depth. And blowing up Vulcan was unforgivable. It was done strictly for shock value, so Abrams could put his stamp on Star Trek. That planet is a part of Trek lore. Now every f’ing sequel is gonna be about Spock whining how he’s an exile, the survivor of a lost world.
Even though I’m not as into Star Trek as you are, I feel your pain. I read Abram’s proposal for a Superman movie(this was before Superman Returns). Krypton never explodes, Jor-El comes to Earth and fights evil with Superman, and Lex Luthor isn’t human. I loved the first few seasons of Alias and was entertained by MI:3 but I don’t want to see Abrams around any franchises I really care about.
I’m Irish, but not so much that I care about that series. Although, I’ve seen every installment but the 6th one. If Abrams touches a horror franchise, it should probably be this one…
Wow, I just read the Abrams treatment for Superman on Ain’t It Cool. You weren’t kidding about how ridiculous it is. What an absolute piece of horsedung! Jimmy is gay, Luthor can fly, Superman knows kung fu… unreal!
Well, I was never a fan of the original Trek so none of that bothered me. I’m sure if I was a fan (I liked TNG and even more so, DS9) I may have been pissed too.
And that’s probably why I’m enjoying Loeb’s run on Hulk, for the same reason you liked the Star Trek movie. I hadn’t read Hulk in years, not since Peter David was writing it, except for a few issues of the Bruce Jones run which were really boring. I knew nothing about recent continuity. I just think Loeb’s stuff is lighthearted, smash-em-up fun. It’s a quick and easy read.
How do y’all feel about Chris Evans playing Captain America? I’d be fine with his selection if he hadn’t already played the Torch. It’s just too weird now. It would be like getting Tobey MaGuire to play Bruce Banner in the Avengers movie.
It’s not a bad choice, but it doesn’t get me cheering like the casting of Blake Lively as Carol Ferris did(I keed, I keed). I’m not going to get my hopes up for this movie since Hollywood has trouble remaining faithful to even a character as simple as The Punisher. I’m sure there are going to be a lot of changes made to Cap that might not make the movie any better.
Fox is rebooting the Fantastic Four now so I don’t think it will be too bad. I also don’t really care too much either way. I did like the Iron Man movie but who knows if I’ll give a shit about Cap. Marvel movies have a tendency to be mostly shit just like most of their comics.
Now, if you told me that Bill Bellamy was going to play the Riddler? Then I would have a problem.
I liked the Daredevil movie. Quite a bit, actually.
I know that’s not a popular opinion, but whatever. Bite me. Farrell was hysterical as Bullseye, I liked DD’s costume, Affleck shockingly didn’t annoy me, and I thought the end battle was awesome. Just a full-on brawl between him and Kingpin, without any corny dialogue.
And I’m totally willing to live on a planet where the last Superman movie never happened.
Ummmm…no. I will not “bite you”. But I will say that Affleck annoyed the hell out of me in that movie. Everyone else in the movie was fine. Farrell and Favreau were the best parts of it. I will admit to liking the director’s cut a hell of a lot more than the theatrical version.
And Michael Clarke Duncan was also perfectly cast as the Kingpin. Color aside, I can’t think of another actor who fit the build and was that imposing.
I think DD was the only Affleck movie I enjoyed that wasn’t directed by Kevin Smith. And I do agree with you about the director’s cut being far superior.
I liked Daredevil a lot when I saw it at the theatres, but liked it less when I saw it again on DVD(I know most people like the Director’s Cut more than the theatrical version but the only difference I really remember is that Coolio was in it). It’s still entertaining but the bit where a blind lawyer is fighting a martial artist in front of a bunch of kids at a playground, the sound deprivation chamber, and the way Elektra went from grieving daughter to ninja in 10 minutes bothered me more on second viewing. I still found it less cringe inducing than Spider-Man 2. I know I’m in the minority, but I’ll never accept that Spider-Man 2 was a good movie(or that it was even better than the first one which I really liked). If I was a bigger geek(and not so lazy), I’d record my own MST3K style commentary for that movie just to point out all of its faults(at least in my opinion).
I thought Spider-Man 2 was very good. I just thought it could have been a wee bit better. I’ve felt that way about pretty much every Marvel movie. Some were fair (Fantastic Four), some were good (X-Men 2), and some were exceptional (Iron Man), but every single one of them could have used a little improvement.
Haha, I really enjoyed DAREDEVIL. I’m a huge fan of the character too. My favorite Marvel character behind Thor.
I thought Affleck was decent enough. Jennifer Garner was nice to look at, and Colin Farrell played a great Bullseye. Kingpin was spot on, that is my favorite take on the character. Hell, Faverau as Foggy was hilarous.
I don’t see the problem with the movie. It was just a fun action flick.
Honestly, I hate to say this, but I don’t think I’ll give a fuck about Captain America. I don’t think Marvel should let that be their lead character in Avengers. I think he’s lame and I don’t really see him bossing Downey’s Stark around. I’d love to see Downey make fun of Cap’s costume though!
I to liked DD and thought Ben did not stink up the joint, although I would have preferred his bro from a differernt mo…. Matt Damon to have had the lead role.
As for Duncan, I won’t say that he was miscast but I will say he was under-utilized. Kingpin is one of marvels’ top shelf villains and Duncans’ portrayal of Fisk was barely more than that of a henchman.
Hollywood seems like it’s run by the jocks from teen comedies; arrogant, cruel to those not sitting at the “popular table”, and not one intelligent or creative idea amongst them. Anytime a TV show or movie is popular, Hollywood thinks the best way to capture lightning in a bottle more than once is to duplicate the initial hit a million times over.
Not only is it a Marmaduke movie, but it seems other than the dog still being a Great Dane, it has nothing to do with the bland comic strip. At least he didn’t talk in the comic strip. They get Owen Wilson while Garfield got Bill Murray.
For a quirky but attractive in a non-classic beauty sort of way, I used to dig Judy Greer as well. These days, for me, it’s Jayma Mays.
The chick from Glee, right? Ya, she’s cool but Greer will always be my #1. Did you ever see Greer’s short lived tv show Miss Guided? It was really good. Only lasted 7 episodes though and ABC didn’t renew it. Assholes.
I saw most of the episodes and thought it was pretty good(better than the other 2 sitcoms ABC had around the same time; the one with “Rollergirl” that was canceled after 1 episode and the other one with “Uncle Jesse”). It’s a shame that she seems to make most of her money always playing the best friend in chick flicks. Especially when she has no problem with nudity as evidenced in “What Planet Are You From?”. LOL!
i just caught up with the latest 3 episodes of archer on fx her cheryl character is the most bat house crazy character i have ever encountered that includes the joker btw and she plays her to insane perfection

It is all a plan of Doom. They screwed his portrayal and now he is threatening to destroy their families if they do not reboot it and make a good job this time, the other movies got on the boat as a cover up to not look as if it was just the FF.

Agreed, if there good actors who can get into the role then I could care less. Or in the case of Ryan Reynolds, I would like to forget that he played Deadpool or Hannibal King, and think that the Green Lantern is his first comic book role.

Of the actors that you’ve mentioned…two of them essentially do play the same persons, just with different names. Hell the only real difference between Clint’s westerns and his cop movies is his type of transportation.
I used to be a huge Will Smith fan way before he became an actor. Unfortunately, I’ve grown so sick of him and his family these days. If that Karate Kid remake bombs(if there’s a God, it will), I hope that drives him, his annoying wife, and his talentless brat of a son into hiding never to be seen again. He used to be so likable but he’s gone so “Hollywood” these days; huge ego, hangs out with Scientologists, and thinks the general public cares what he thinks about politics(supposedly he knows he can be president if he ever decides to honor our great country by running *puke*).

Jackie Chan in the trailer specifically says that he is going to teach him kung fu. The title doesn’t even fit the movie; it should be the kung fu kid but maybe I’m just being picky. Either way I’m not seeing it.

My only fear is when they get to the Avengers movie, Evans won’t have the gravitas to stand with Robert Downey and Sam Jackson. well it’s a different role to Johnny, who knows he might pull it off, but I’m unsure mostly, I’m not sure he can give off the commanding presence that Cap has. wow, i can’t believe its been a lil over a year since i picked up my first comic book, then a couple days later i stumbled upon the ccw tv channel and ive been watching ever since. It’s been an awesome year, can’t wait to see how further into comics i can get. i just wanred to say thanx E & J, you guys are alway fun and have great info about stuff i hardly know about.
I can’t remember my first comic. Had to be sometime in the mid to late 70’s. It was probably something with Batman or Superman on it. Or maybe Richie Rich.
I look at the cover prices now and compare them to back then when they were 35 cents, and geez, do I feel old as dirt.
I’m 34 and have been getting comics since I could read, but I don’t remember my very first book. I can remember a lot of the eary stuff I read, but not that very first one. I really don’t know why that is since I do have a good memory and practically every comic professional seems to be able to mention his/her first book in any interview I read.
My first superhero comic was Web of Spider-Man #31 (The first part of Kraven’s Last Hunt). I wrote a post about it when we first started this blog. That story fucked me up.
Jose, I know you said you were into manga before superhero comics, but I was curious as to how old you were when you started reading Marvel(I believe you said you didn’t get into DC until years later)? I’m only asking this since we’re the same age but I remember picking up Web Of Spider-Man #1 at a spinner rack at Jewel(grocery store for those of you who don’t live in IL).
Would you believe that I bought Web of Spider-Man #31 (which was my first comic) at Jewel too. That’s unbelievable!
I got into Marvel later than most of you guys. I believe I was about 13 or 14 when I started buying Marvel. I didn’t get into DC until much later. Around when Identity Crisis Started. But Avi and my other friend Randy were both into DC so I did read some of the earlier stuff every now and again. The first DC comic I read was an issue of Justice League drawn by Adam Hughes.
Even though all of the comics I want are available at my local comic store( whichI first started going to since the first issue of Blue Devil I ever saw was #2 and I was dying for the first issue), I still miss the spinner racks that most gorcery stores, pharmacies, and some 7-11’s used to have. I remember this one 7-11 that even carried mature reader indies from companies like Comico. Even though kids these days have better looking video games and the internet, I’d never trade growing up in the 80’s.
a buddy of mine and i were talking about richie rich and how at the time EVERYBODY read those comics they were crazy wacky fun im glad companies are getting back into comics targeting kids again
The kids books I liked growing up were Archie Comics(along with Marvel’s Star Comics). Call me uncool, but I still pick up an issue here or there. You almost always know what you’re going to get with an Archie Comic and it’s nice to know that it hasn’t changed much from its heyday.
Well, like a lot of us in our mid twenty’s, my first comic was a ghost rider/wolverine issue where if you flipped it over after you were done with wolverine, you could read a separate ghost rider story. I wish I could say it was something else, but when i was 8 years old there was nothing cooler. I still have the comic too, and read it whenever I need a good laugh.
My first comic book was Captain America – Sentinel of Liberty #7. I was 8 and had the chicken pox and got shipped to the middle of nowhere in eastern Kentucky so I wouldn’t get my newborn sister sick. It was the only reading material the drugstore in my grandmother’s town had…best $1.99 I ever spent. I’ve got a copy framed.
My first comic was either the beano or Sonic, 2bh before this year I kind of just bought the trades of stories I wanted to read but then I watch CCW and started with the monthlys. first actual monthly was Batman, when Dick took over. My first comic was a Two-Face & Riddler trade when Batman Forever came out, loved Eye of the Beholder best Two Face origin ever.
My first book was the Invaders from the seventies… don’t remember the number, but it was the one where Union Jack II is introduced. Man, Frank Robbins could draw fight scenes like nobodys business. A lost art, I tell you.
Unfortunately he also drew the ugliest people ever. Everyone looked gaunt and malnourished. He also drew evryonne fighting as if they were practising for a ballet. That’s an artform that can stay lost, but hey…thats just me.
My first was Crisis #8 off the rack at a 7-11. I would read it over and over again; I had no idea what was going on but I loved it. It took me a few years to finally get and read all of Crisis and put the pieces together. But I still have that first issue all tattered to hell.
Having read Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men, I was surprised to hear that Kitty Pryde is coming back today in Uncanny Xmen, which I don’t read. Should Fraction be bringing her back or should that have been left to Whedon? And is Fraction’s writing any good on Uncanny?
Ultimately it comes down to how it’s done. As I’ve said before, I think Fraction’s run on Uncanny has been meh at best (nothing compared to is Iron Man). Maybe he will make it work, maybe he won’t…we’ll just have to see.
As to whole, shouldn’t Whedon have a say…I find his fascination with Kitty to be almost creepy. Everyone has favorite characters and all that but the way he talked about her bothered me.
One other point; the x-franchise is so fucked at this point that I’m not sure any writer would be able to write that book well. So I have to cut Fraction a little slack there.
Unlike most people I didn’t find Astonishing X-Men as ground breaking as everybody else. Though I like some of Whedon’s stuff like Firefly, I think his work in comics as been sub-par, I have read a couple of issues of Buffy and Angel and didn’t see what was so special. So what I am saying is Sprite is one of everybody’s favorite characters and I can’t wait to see what Fraction has up his sleeve. I just want a issue of Kitty and Cypher doing some crazy computer hacking, that would be sick.
IDW is launching a new Jurassic Park Five Issue Mini-series in June. It will be Written by Bob Schreck, with art from Nate van Dyke. Covers from Frank Miller, Tom Yeates while Art Adams, Paul Pope, Bernie Wrightson are doing Variant covers.
They are also reprinting the Topps Jurassic Park comics in Trade Paperback collection.
For some reason a Jurassic Park comic has me more excited than other licenses from my youth like Ghostbusters or G.I. Joe. Even if their main book for a license stinks, I love how IDW goes out of their way to reprint most, if not all, of a franchise’s previous comic book appearances. It’s weird how DC and especially Marvel did so many movie adaptations and cartoon/toy based comic series in the 70’s & 80’s but rarely do so anymore. These days it’s all about Dark Horse, IDW, Dynamite, and Boom.
That is just not my thing, I STRONGLY prefer the movies. When I saw Frank Millar was doing the cover, I laughed. Speeking of Jurassic Park, how ’bout that 4th movie they’ve been saying was coming out for the last 5 yrs?

“As much as I didn’t want to like 505 since it’s a filler and all, I did. In additon to a decent enough story revealing for the first time that are leaders of the Hand spread out across the world each conrtlling a different continuent and should have had more focus on Matts mission to unit said hand leaders rather than focus on the impudence of Bakuto and the other members attempt to “reieve” him of his position, but substitute artist managed to provide some stunning artisty that didn’t have me miss de la Torre as much as I thought would. This fill in artist, though, Chechetto,is no where near de la Torre’s calaliber, tobe sure, but damn if his here wasn’t stunning at times. There’s cause for me to pick up the second issue but the knowing that this’ll in all likelihood be meaningless in the greater picture of things still irks me a bit.
Apropos the release of the present arc, (a THREE ISSUE arc, as you’ve poiointed out), it’ll take FIVE MONTHS to see conclusion. It’s ridiculous. The final issue was actually just solicited in the Marvel June previews earlier this week. Sales on the title have been taking a steady but noticeable dip for a few months now. Having the title ship so infrequently certianly won’t help those sales. Marvel probably of the mind that Shadowland will garner interest in DD thus help sales on the book when it returns – assuming it goes on hiatus for Shadowland, of course. In May, though, in lieu of issue 507, there will be a one-shot titled “Cage Match” set to look back at the history between DD and Luke Cage, for as the solict says “Shadowland will tear them apart”, or something to that effect. I think I might pass.”

Antony Johston is creator of a idie comic titled Wasteland. If I’m correst, it’s a well recieved post apocalyptic future kind of thing. There’s very little I can gree with you there, djsweet, but when it comes to the art there was indeed a dip but not nearly as bad as it could have been. At least they made a concious effort here to keep the tone consisted whereas The List one-shot it was an aberrantly garish disaster for a supposedly noir title.
Issue 508 will only see Joshstons stint as co-creator continue for another arc, not necessarily have him replace Diggle as head creator. And – hopefully – by then de le Torre will be back in full. If having a sub in for art duties is to give him lead time or rest from the previous arc, I think he has his fill of both. Time to get back to work!
I like DD going to Japan, the ninja thing doesn’t bother me since I havent read much about DD, but if he’s going to be like this for a while I’d at least want him to secretly fighting bad guys behind the hands back i.e. Angel with Wolfram and Hart

Well, I grew up with an unmarried Peter Parker, so I always thought the marriage was a mistake… and I think the same about Lois and Clark as well. I had no problem with breaking up the marriage, but how it was done could not have been more moronic.
writers seem to have trouble with married characters across the board if you look at tv besides sitcoms shows tend to break couples up as soon as they get them together

It’s not because that they broke the marriage up that upsets me now, it’s that they broke it up because he’s so damn lazy and doesn’t want him and his writers to have to put any effort into a story that is already existing. It seems insulting to readers who invested time and money into it, it also shows just how much craftsmanship and pride he puts into his work and expects out of others under him.

I’m not saying Lois shouldn’t be there in Clark’s life, but married? That’s a whole other ballgame. Superman went, what… 50, 60 years without getting married, and then one editorial decision at DC has to change that. Now we’ll never be treated to another Lori Lemaris type of story, or the hint of romance between him and Wonder Woman that Byrne used to tease us with during his run.
Creative teams shouldn’t mess with characters too much. Giving Reed and Sue Richards another kid is fine. They’re a family. It doesn’t change the dynamic of the book. But part of the fun of Superman was that Lois never knew Clark’s identity. It changed everything when she found out, and later, when they got married. And now when you have a storyline like the one that’s happening now where Superman is off somewhere else doing his thing, it’s completely awkward that he left Lois behind so easily.
If Lois couldn’t make out Clarks identity then she’s a retard and a shit reporter. Fine if you don’t want them married but Lois spending so much time with him not realising that Clark is Superman is ludicrous beyond belief.

I’m not married myself, but I have no problems with heroes being married. I epsecially don’t have a problem with Superman being married. Not only has Lois been written as his love interest for over 70 years, I don’t want DC to turn Clark into a manwhore like Marvel has done with Peter Parker. The only other possible loves for Clark are a mermaid and his childhood sweetheart. I’d actually prefer Gwen Stacy over MJ for Peter but she was dead before I was born.

I have no problem with suspension of disbelief, Pet Avengers would hardly be one of my favourite titles if I was reliant on hyper-realism however, there is suspension of disbelief and then there is just plain ridiculous.

I think it depends on the title to what degree you suspend belief when reading it. “Chew” and “X-Men Noir” have separate standards of whats appropriate realism-wise to me.

Wonder Woman’s jet was a prop, and a silly one at that. Just like Spider-Man with his Spidey-mobile. And we can toss in Robin’s green panties and bare legs while we’re at it. You’re right in that some things just don’t fly today.
But the thing with Lois never knowing who Clark’s true identity was an integral part of the storyline. It was so ironic that one of the best reporters on the planet couldn’t figure it out. But that’s just one of those conventions you have to accept with comic books. Yes, in real life, everyone should be able to figure out who Clark Kent is, not just Lois. A pair of glasses and hiding the hair curl? Perry and Jimmy should get it too. Just like everyone should get that Batman could only be Bruce Wayne, with his identical height and build. Whom else could afford those “wonderful toys,” as Joker said in the Burton movie? Just like everyone should get that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, who just happens to be around to take every picture of Spidey in action.
These are conventions that we totally accept and are fine with as kids. And you want to keep those same conventions around for the next generation to enjoy.
With Superman it’s different. I don’t want him dating Wonder Woman or anything silly like that. He has always been a one woman guy. It’s always been Lois and Clark, and that’s an important part of the mythos. When written right, the Superman story is also a great love story. I don’t think tossing the marriage out would make writing Superman any easier. Lois Lane is Superman’s humanity. Why should Superman lie to the woman he loves? It never protected her, she got into just as much trouble when she didn’t know who he was.
That said, I don’t think the movies should ever go there. Classic Superman is what works best on screen, not the bastardization that Bryan Singer envisioned.
How you feel about the movies is how I feel about the comics. So there ya go.
Once you marry off Superman & Lois, at what point do they start having kids? The wedding issue took place… what… 12 years ago? At some point it’s gonna feel weird that they’ve been married as long as they have and there’s no children. So now we’re headed into Singer territory. I hated it on the screen and I’d hate it even more in the comics. They’re just further changing the character.

Well, Dan Slott has done this but with others stories its more focused on the villains than Spidey, if they focused on Spidey it would kind of strengthen the argument, not tha much but it was still give some validity.
But all in all I stick wiv my idea as better because even when Spidey is with other people it feels wrong, whereas if he’d seperated from MJ and done that it would have felt that way but we would have been going through wot Peter was going through as well.
I think what it really shows is how whiney comic book creators are today. If the slightest thing about a character bothers them, they remove it as quickly as possible. When I’m writing I enjoy working with constraints because it shows that I can handle a challenge and not just write whatever I want. Joey Q. seems to have forgotten that the best writers can flourish with the ingredients given to them.

The Fantastic Four are a family. That’s part of their identity. Spidey was never supposed to get the hot girl. Peter Parker is basically Charlie Brown with super powers. Charlie Brown never kicks the football. Peter always has the worst luck. When they married him, they totally f’d with his basic identity. I never liked the marriage, and that’s what partly why I ended up giving up Spider-Man.
You can’t have a character around for almost 50 years and have no character progression. If the character dosen’t grow then really, whats the fucking point of publishing it?, just to repeat the same tropes over and over?, Spidey fights villain, spidey gets ass kicked, spidey wins, peter parker gets a crush on a girl, petey gets rejected….and on and on and on…what is the point of that? Is it just comfort reading, is it just nostalgia after a lost childhood? that seems like a hollow empty shell of a character to me.
I’m a huge DC guy but Bruce is one of my least favorite JLA members. He may not get much in terms of character progression but he occasionally gets a personality transplant.
Even though I know that it’s temporary, this is why I like the idea of Dick acting as Batman for awhile. He’s got a personality and is likable. DC was supposedly going to make Bruce a little more likable after Infinite Crisis but after awhile it was clear that not all writers got the message.

I liked First Wave, alright it was nothing special but maybe could get better as it goes. Now I think it’s odd that The Marvel Project is almost done and it basically doing the same thing with the Marvel U(odd how that always works that way). So I say if you like Azzarello pick it up, it may not be 100 Bullets but it could be the start of something more.
Yes much better, I thought that one-shot was garbage, but when I saw First Wave in color compared to all the previews that were black and white, it had a different feel then what i was expecting.
I just finished reading the first TPB of Ultimate Spider-Man from 10 yrs ago. Man, where did that Bendis go? If he wrote Avengers books like he did this, I probably be buyin’ them. Good reading expierence I must say.
I love Powers. I adore Powers. I think that’s far and away Bendis’s best work. Goldfish was pretty good. His work on Ultimate Spider-Man is alright, but what annoys me no end is his need to reveal Spidey’s identity in seemingly every issue. The dude clearly hates secret identities.
His Avengers stuff annoys me no end. How I long for the days of Roger Stern.
Just read Nemesis… gotta say, I’m starting to agree with Jose. McNiven’s art was supremely lacking. What the hell happened, it wasn’t even as good as OML, the preview pages were the best looking pages in the book. It did remind me a lot of Leinel Yu, but not as good. I don’t know if it was the coloring, but his style looked a lot different. And the story did nothing for me. Boo Nemesis.

McNiven has always been a run of the mill artist but some people are impressed by the detail he throws in (when he can be bothered) but he certainly is no Geoff Darrow thats for sure.
Its no surprise that Millar likes Mcniven, because they are quite similar, style over substance all the way.
I’m happy I’m not alone in thinking McNiven is just a “run of the mill” artist. All of his characters appear so stiff and they keep looking up at weird angles like they’re posing for a MySpace picture. All the acclaim he got for Civil War was lost on me(although I thought the book was poorly written as well and some people feel it’s award worthy).
Even though I usually like JRJr’s work(although his dad is a million times better imo), I can understand someone not liking his work. It’s overly stylized and doesn’t work on every type of book.

So how do we feel about the casting of Angela “I should have been Storm” Bassett as Amanda Waller in the Green Lantern movie? It seems that even though they’re casting older women for the role(Pam Grier plays her on Smallville), Warner Bros is still too nervous to cast an obese woman. They keep going with Milfs instead of someone who looks like Monique or Nell Carter(RIP). I’m also surprised she’s going to be in the movie since she has more to do with Suicide Squad than GL. I’d say maybe WB is going to attempt to have her start the JLA Initiative at the end of this movie ala Nick Fury in Iron Man, but Christopher Nolan has already said he doesn’t want Batman or Superman crossing over with other DCU movies.
Pam Grier just aint what she used to be, shes a bigger lady now. I still watch smallville and thought that was a good casting move, now Angela bassett is not, I cant see her being as powerful Waller needs to be.
I hate Oprah so much that not only am I counting the days until she leaves my city, I get physically ill when I think of the way everyone acts like she’s the female Jesus. Even though Batman Begins is one of my favorite superhero movies and Michael Caine as Alfred & Gary Oldman as James Gordon were perfect casting, I will have no problem if Batman is rebooted and/or put into someone else’s hands. Just as long as it isn’t Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher again.
I think a JLA film would be the biggest clusterfuck ever. Too many characters in costumes and too many backstories to try and manage. Just do solo franchises.
But with Marvel, their characters were created to be in a shared universe so it works. DC’s weren’t. They were just the most popular characters in the house and eventually became a shared universe.
Fact is, Superman and Batman do not go that well together. We may like seeing it since we love the characters, but in story terms, they just don’t. When you have a guy like Superman and a lady like Wonder Woman, all the other characters seem useless. Which is why they are de-powered and bastardized (Superman on JLU).
I just can’t see a live action movie with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, and Aquaman together not being the silliest thing ever.

I also feel Marvel has enough of their own versions of DC characters that would make them having a shared universe seem just as silly if you wanted to look at it that way. Isn’t Thor, Moon Knight, Hercules, Nova, Quicksilver, and Namor together just as bad as the DCU characters you listed?
I would have loved to see a Ridley Scott Batman film. I’m talking Alien/Blade Runner Ridley Scott, not A Good Year Ridley Scott. David Fincher also comes to mind as someone who has the dark visual aesthetic and experience with effects to pull it off….any other directors come to mind?

CCW is like a refuge from the insanity of the “real world”. I first started coming here since it is one of the only places online that calls Marvel on their shit instead of acting like they can do no wrong. The Dark Knight and Spiderman 2 are just great films in general. Iron Man takes the cake as best comic adapted superhero film though.
Robert Downey Jr. was just a pitch perfect Tony Stark. The story was great. Pepper Potts was realized as a character and it was just wicked enjoyable from start to finish.

What do the colors GREEN and PURPLE mean in the world of comic books? i’ve noticed that most major villains have these two colors in common. Examples: the Joker, Green Goblin, Lex Luthor’s suit, Brainiac, Riddler, etc……. Where these just the artist’s favorite colors at the time they were created???
You forgot the most obvious connection: the Hulk. I’ve never understood why they always had to depict the Hulk in torn purple pants. I had a pair of purplish pants in the 80s when bright colors were hot thanks to Miami Vice, but that’s the only blemish on my otherwise stellar fashion sense.
What was even funnier was when the Hulk turned grey, then he wore blue jeans. Never purple.
So what you’re saying is that you would rather see a purple-headed Hulk in tight blue jeans?

Yeah when i was younger my mom would buy me those DK Ultimate Guide books from borders, and i would notice that these were the two most common colors used for villains. Spider Man’s first ten villains are all green and purple or have one or the other except for your boy Kraven the Hunter lol. But yeah i would like to know why.
Its because of the more primitive colouring techniques in the 60’s, they could get good greens and purples but muted colours ended up being murky. Thats why grey hulk became green hulk.

A great four mini-series from the 90s that I’ve never seen in TPB is Robocop Vs. Terminator. Kinda surprising given that it was the creative team, Frank Miller and Walt Simonson, are heavyweights in the industry and the characters are fairly well known. I was just thinking that I need to dig it out of my collection.
This was before Miller went senile.
I have a theory about Frank Miller. He has Syphilis but didn’t know about and so it went untreated. And now he is slowly going insane because of it. I have the same theory about Jeph Loeb and Brian Bendis.

I met Miller at a book signing once and I asked to take a picture with him. I’ll never forget how he needed a few seconds to compose himself and then twist his body around and do that stupid sneer he always does in every pic. Even my girlfriend was like, dude, get over yourself.
Anyway, now I’m now thinking of great stories that never got collected in TPB. How about the Masters Of Evil storyline in Avengers with Roger Stern and John Buscema?

Have you ever seen any of those pictures of Miller hanging out with his new Hollywood pals like Jaime King or Rosario Dawson? He looks so creepy, it reminds me of that old bit from Sesame Street, “One Of These Things Is Not Like the Other”. Right after Stan Lee, Frank Miller is my #1 pick for a forced retirement. I don’t need another Spirit or All Star Batman & Robin.

I paid to see that movie too but I full well knew what I was getting into. Avi and I needed to hear the commentary on the dvd so he just got it from Netflix. There are some interviews with Miller too as extra’s that are completely ridiculous. You have to see them.

The Spirit might quite possibly be one of the worst films of the last decade. If I live to be 200, I’ll never forget that Nazi scene. What were Jackson and Johansson thinking?
Miller left out Ebony because he was offensive(he could have still used him if he worked on updating the character slightly) but he put Samuel L. Jackson in a Nazi uniform for no reason at all. The only good thing about that movie was Eva Mendes’ ass shot(and I don’t usually find her that attractive) and that girl from “Castle” was adorable as the police officer.
Stana Katic was the ONLY good thing (besides that ass shot you mentioned) about that “movie”.

Is everyone who didn’t like Kick Ass:The Comic prepared for the inevitable success of Kick Ass:The Movie? It’s going to be Bay’s 2 Transformers movies and Abram’s Star Trek all over again for me; movies I couldn’t stand but the rest of the world loved.
I have always said that movie is going to make a ton of money. Mediocrity always plays well with he masses. Just look at the success Avatar.
I have heard though that the Scott Pilgrim trailer is playing before Kick-Ass and this angers me greatly.

I think Kick-Ass is going to work better as a movie than a comic. Granted I still haven’t read the comic, but the trailer for the movie actually doesn’t look too bad. As long as they tone down the ultra-violence and change some of the more ridiculous aspects, it could be a half decent flick.
And I still haven’t read any Scott Pilgrim either, but after hearing that Metric is going to be supplying the music for the film, I’ve been getting more and more psyched for it. Can’t wait for a trailer!

It was a garbage movie made for the MTV generation. Abrams demonstrated absolutely no understanding of these characters. People on here rip Loeb constantly for his refusal to adhere to any continuity. Abrams shat all over Trek continuity.
Wasn’t the point of the new Trek to make a new timeline on purpose so it didn’t shit all over the original continuity? That’s kinda how I saw it.

I’m not a Star Trek guy at all. I’ve seen all of the movies and 2 episodes of STNG but that’s it. I still didn’t like the movie. It had some cringe inducing “comedy”, a lot of plot holes(the 2 “writers” have supposedly explained everything in interviews but how does that help people who only watch the movie), poor designs on the aliens(I’ll take the zippered costumes and prostetics of the 60’s show over the overly cgi’ed crap in this movie), one of the blandest & most poorly developed villains I’ve seen in a long time, and wayyy too many lens flares. The only parts I really liked were Karl Urban, Bruce Greenwood, and a half-naked & green Rachel Nichols. It was better than Transformers 2 at least.
What changed in the continuity was that Kirk’s father died. That should not change the alter Spock and Uhura MAKING OUT in the elevator. Are you freakin’ kidding me? Did Abrams not get the memo about Vulcans having a cap on their emotions? Not to mention the fact that Spock had a thing for Rand, anyway.
Kirk seeing the Enterprise being built as a kid was as likely as Anakin building Threepio, and there was no indication in Wrath Of Khan that Spock invented the Kobayashi Maru.
Pike was roughly the same age as Kirk, not an old man.
And let’s not even get into the nonsense of Kirk being promoted from cadet to captain with zero experience, or being stranded on that ice planet (why didn’t Spock just throw him in the brig?) and after running from a monster that looked straight out of Attack Of The Clones, he just happens to run into old Spock. Or the fact that the main villain could not have been more dull and his motivation for going after Spock seemed rather idiotic.
There were scenes in the movie I enjoyed, and I thought some of the actors, like the guys who played Chekov and Bones, were spot-on with their performances. But, overall, it was an empty cinematic experience, full of eye candy but with very little depth. And blowing up Vulcan was unforgivable. It was done strictly for shock value, so Abrams could put his stamp on Star Trek. That planet is a part of Trek lore. Now every f’ing sequel is gonna be about Spock whining how he’s an exile, the survivor of a lost world.

Even though I’m not as into Star Trek as you are, I feel your pain. I read Abram’s proposal for a Superman movie(this was before Superman Returns). Krypton never explodes, Jor-El comes to Earth and fights evil with Superman, and Lex Luthor isn’t human. I loved the first few seasons of Alias and was entertained by MI:3 but I don’t want to see Abrams around any franchises I really care about.
So I take it you don’t like the idea Ambrams rebooting the Leprechaun franchise? 🙂

And that’s probably why I’m enjoying Loeb’s run on Hulk, for the same reason you liked the Star Trek movie. I hadn’t read Hulk in years, not since Peter David was writing it, except for a few issues of the Bruce Jones run which were really boring. I knew nothing about recent continuity. I just think Loeb’s stuff is lighthearted, smash-em-up fun. It’s a quick and easy read.

How do y’all feel about Chris Evans playing Captain America? I’d be fine with his selection if he hadn’t already played the Torch. It’s just too weird now. It would be like getting Tobey MaGuire to play Bruce Banner in the Avengers movie.
It’s not a bad choice, but it doesn’t get me cheering like the casting of Blake Lively as Carol Ferris did(I keed, I keed). I’m not going to get my hopes up for this movie since Hollywood has trouble remaining faithful to even a character as simple as The Punisher. I’m sure there are going to be a lot of changes made to Cap that might not make the movie any better.
There needs to be a Modesty Blaise film.
Fox is rebooting the Fantastic Four now so I don’t think it will be too bad. I also don’t really care too much either way. I did like the Iron Man movie but who knows if I’ll give a shit about Cap. Marvel movies have a tendency to be mostly shit just like most of their comics.
Now, if you told me that Bill Bellamy was going to play the Riddler? Then I would have a problem.

I liked the Daredevil movie. Quite a bit, actually.
I know that’s not a popular opinion, but whatever. Bite me. Farrell was hysterical as Bullseye, I liked DD’s costume, Affleck shockingly didn’t annoy me, and I thought the end battle was awesome. Just a full-on brawl between him and Kingpin, without any corny dialogue.
And I’m totally willing to live on a planet where the last Superman movie never happened.
Ummmm…no. I will not “bite you”. But I will say that Affleck annoyed the hell out of me in that movie. Everyone else in the movie was fine. Farrell and Favreau were the best parts of it. I will admit to liking the director’s cut a hell of a lot more than the theatrical version.

I think DD was the only Affleck movie I enjoyed that wasn’t directed by Kevin Smith. And I do agree with you about the director’s cut being far superior.

I liked Daredevil a lot when I saw it at the theatres, but liked it less when I saw it again on DVD(I know most people like the Director’s Cut more than the theatrical version but the only difference I really remember is that Coolio was in it). It’s still entertaining but the bit where a blind lawyer is fighting a martial artist in front of a bunch of kids at a playground, the sound deprivation chamber, and the way Elektra went from grieving daughter to ninja in 10 minutes bothered me more on second viewing. I still found it less cringe inducing than Spider-Man 2. I know I’m in the minority, but I’ll never accept that Spider-Man 2 was a good movie(or that it was even better than the first one which I really liked). If I was a bigger geek(and not so lazy), I’d record my own MST3K style commentary for that movie just to point out all of its faults(at least in my opinion).
I thought Spider-Man 2 was very good. I just thought it could have been a wee bit better. I’ve felt that way about pretty much every Marvel movie. Some were fair (Fantastic Four), some were good (X-Men 2), and some were exceptional (Iron Man), but every single one of them could have used a little improvement.

Haha, I really enjoyed DAREDEVIL. I’m a huge fan of the character too. My favorite Marvel character behind Thor.
I thought Affleck was decent enough. Jennifer Garner was nice to look at, and Colin Farrell played a great Bullseye. Kingpin was spot on, that is my favorite take on the character. Hell, Faverau as Foggy was hilarous.
I don’t see the problem with the movie. It was just a fun action flick.
Honestly, I hate to say this, but I don’t think I’ll give a fuck about Captain America. I don’t think Marvel should let that be their lead character in Avengers. I think he’s lame and I don’t really see him bossing Downey’s Stark around. I’d love to see Downey make fun of Cap’s costume though!

As for Duncan, I won’t say that he was miscast but I will say he was under-utilized. Kingpin is one of marvels’ top shelf villains and Duncans’ portrayal of Fisk was barely more than that of a henchman.

Hollywood seems like it’s run by the jocks from teen comedies; arrogant, cruel to those not sitting at the “popular table”, and not one intelligent or creative idea amongst them. Anytime a TV show or movie is popular, Hollywood thinks the best way to capture lightning in a bottle more than once is to duplicate the initial hit a million times over.
I can not tell you how much it pains me that the love of my life, Judy Greer, will be starring in the Marmaduke movie.

I saw most of the episodes and thought it was pretty good(better than the other 2 sitcoms ABC had around the same time; the one with “Rollergirl” that was canceled after 1 episode and the other one with “Uncle Jesse”). It’s a shame that she seems to make most of her money always playing the best friend in chick flicks. Especially when she has no problem with nudity as evidenced in “What Planet Are You From?”. LOL!

wow, i can’t believe its been a lil over a year since i picked up my first comic book, then a couple days later i stumbled upon the ccw tv channel and ive been watching ever since. It’s been an awesome year, can’t wait to see how further into comics i can get. i just wanred to say thanx E & J, you guys are alway fun and have great info about stuff i hardly know about.
I can’t remember my first comic. Had to be sometime in the mid to late 70’s. It was probably something with Batman or Superman on it. Or maybe Richie Rich.
I look at the cover prices now and compare them to back then when they were 35 cents, and geez, do I feel old as dirt.
I’m 34 and have been getting comics since I could read, but I don’t remember my very first book. I can remember a lot of the eary stuff I read, but not that very first one. I really don’t know why that is since I do have a good memory and practically every comic professional seems to be able to mention his/her first book in any interview I read.
My first superhero comic was Web of Spider-Man #31 (The first part of Kraven’s Last Hunt). I wrote a post about it when we first started this blog. That story fucked me up.

Jose, I know you said you were into manga before superhero comics, but I was curious as to how old you were when you started reading Marvel(I believe you said you didn’t get into DC until years later)? I’m only asking this since we’re the same age but I remember picking up Web Of Spider-Man #1 at a spinner rack at Jewel(grocery store for those of you who don’t live in IL).
Would you believe that I bought Web of Spider-Man #31 (which was my first comic) at Jewel too. That’s unbelievable!
I got into Marvel later than most of you guys. I believe I was about 13 or 14 when I started buying Marvel. I didn’t get into DC until much later. Around when Identity Crisis Started. But Avi and my other friend Randy were both into DC so I did read some of the earlier stuff every now and again. The first DC comic I read was an issue of Justice League drawn by Adam Hughes.

Even though all of the comics I want are available at my local comic store( whichI first started going to since the first issue of Blue Devil I ever saw was #2 and I was dying for the first issue), I still miss the spinner racks that most gorcery stores, pharmacies, and some 7-11’s used to have. I remember this one 7-11 that even carried mature reader indies from companies like Comico. Even though kids these days have better looking video games and the internet, I’d never trade growing up in the 80’s.

The kids books I liked growing up were Archie Comics(along with Marvel’s Star Comics). Call me uncool, but I still pick up an issue here or there. You almost always know what you’re going to get with an Archie Comic and it’s nice to know that it hasn’t changed much from its heyday.
Well, like a lot of us in our mid twenty’s, my first comic was a ghost rider/wolverine issue where if you flipped it over after you were done with wolverine, you could read a separate ghost rider story. I wish I could say it was something else, but when i was 8 years old there was nothing cooler. I still have the comic too, and read it whenever I need a good laugh.
My first comic book was Captain America – Sentinel of Liberty #7. I was 8 and had the chicken pox and got shipped to the middle of nowhere in eastern Kentucky so I wouldn’t get my newborn sister sick. It was the only reading material the drugstore in my grandmother’s town had…best $1.99 I ever spent. I’ve got a copy framed.
My first comic was either the beano or Sonic, 2bh before this year I kind of just bought the trades of stories I wanted to read but then I watch CCW and started with the monthlys. first actual monthly was Batman, when Dick took over. My first comic was a Two-Face & Riddler trade when Batman Forever came out, loved Eye of the Beholder best Two Face origin ever.
My first book was the Invaders from the seventies… don’t remember the number, but it was the one where Union Jack II is introduced. Man, Frank Robbins could draw fight scenes like nobodys business. A lost art, I tell you.
Unfortunately he also drew the ugliest people ever. Everyone looked gaunt and malnourished. He also drew evryonne fighting as if they were practising for a ballet. That’s an artform that can stay lost, but hey…thats just me.

My first was Crisis #8 off the rack at a 7-11. I would read it over and over again; I had no idea what was going on but I loved it. It took me a few years to finally get and read all of Crisis and put the pieces together. But I still have that first issue all tattered to hell.
Having read Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men, I was surprised to hear that Kitty Pryde is coming back today in Uncanny Xmen, which I don’t read. Should Fraction be bringing her back or should that have been left to Whedon? And is Fraction’s writing any good on Uncanny?
Ultimately it comes down to how it’s done. As I’ve said before, I think Fraction’s run on Uncanny has been meh at best (nothing compared to is Iron Man). Maybe he will make it work, maybe he won’t…we’ll just have to see.
As to whole, shouldn’t Whedon have a say…I find his fascination with Kitty to be almost creepy. Everyone has favorite characters and all that but the way he talked about her bothered me.

One other point; the x-franchise is so fucked at this point that I’m not sure any writer would be able to write that book well. So I have to cut Fraction a little slack there.
Unlike most people I didn’t find Astonishing X-Men as ground breaking as everybody else. Though I like some of Whedon’s stuff like Firefly, I think his work in comics as been sub-par, I have read a couple of issues of Buffy and Angel and didn’t see what was so special. So what I am saying is Sprite is one of everybody’s favorite characters and I can’t wait to see what Fraction has up his sleeve. I just want a issue of Kitty and Cypher doing some crazy computer hacking, that would be sick.
IDW is launching a new Jurassic Park Five Issue Mini-series in June. It will be Written by Bob Schreck, with art from Nate van Dyke. Covers from Frank Miller, Tom Yeates while Art Adams, Paul Pope, Bernie Wrightson are doing Variant covers.
They are also reprinting the Topps Jurassic Park comics in Trade Paperback collection.
For some reason a Jurassic Park comic has me more excited than other licenses from my youth like Ghostbusters or G.I. Joe. Even if their main book for a license stinks, I love how IDW goes out of their way to reprint most, if not all, of a franchise’s previous comic book appearances. It’s weird how DC and especially Marvel did so many movie adaptations and cartoon/toy based comic series in the 70’s & 80’s but rarely do so anymore. These days it’s all about Dark Horse, IDW, Dynamite, and Boom.
That is just not my thing, I STRONGLY prefer the movies. When I saw Frank Millar was doing the cover, I laughed. Speeking of Jurassic Park, how ’bout that 4th movie they’ve been saying was coming out for the last 5 yrs?

“As much as I didn’t want to like 505 since it’s a filler and all, I did. In additon to a decent enough story revealing for the first time that are leaders of the Hand spread out across the world each conrtlling a different continuent and should have had more focus on Matts mission to unit said hand leaders rather than focus on the impudence of Bakuto and the other members attempt to “reieve” him of his position, but substitute artist managed to provide some stunning artisty that didn’t have me miss de la Torre as much as I thought would. This fill in artist, though, Chechetto,is no where near de la Torre’s calaliber, tobe sure, but damn if his here wasn’t stunning at times. There’s cause for me to pick up the second issue but the knowing that this’ll in all likelihood be meaningless in the greater picture of things still irks me a bit.
Apropos the release of the present arc, (a THREE ISSUE arc, as you’ve poiointed out), it’ll take FIVE MONTHS to see conclusion. It’s ridiculous. The final issue was actually just solicited in the Marvel June previews earlier this week. Sales on the title have been taking a steady but noticeable dip for a few months now. Having the title ship so infrequently certianly won’t help those sales. Marvel probably of the mind that Shadowland will garner interest in DD thus help sales on the book when it returns – assuming it goes on hiatus for Shadowland, of course. In May, though, in lieu of issue 507, there will be a one-shot titled “Cage Match” set to look back at the history between DD and Luke Cage, for as the solict says “Shadowland will tear them apart”, or something to that effect. I think I might pass.”

I think the art was a huge step down. I’m not into the story. Who is Anthony Johnson, he is taking over this title with 508. I’m sick of ninjas in DD. I don’t want to read about Matt Murdock emperor of the Hand. I’m out.
Antony Johston is creator of a idie comic titled Wasteland. If I’m correst, it’s a well recieved post apocalyptic future kind of thing. There’s very little I can gree with you there, djsweet, but when it comes to the art there was indeed a dip but not nearly as bad as it could have been. At least they made a concious effort here to keep the tone consisted whereas The List one-shot it was an aberrantly garish disaster for a supposedly noir title.
Issue 508 will only see Joshstons stint as co-creator continue for another arc, not necessarily have him replace Diggle as head creator. And – hopefully – by then de le Torre will be back in full. If having a sub in for art duties is to give him lead time or rest from the previous arc, I think he has his fill of both. Time to get back to work!

Well, I grew up with an unmarried Peter Parker, so I always thought the marriage was a mistake… and I think the same about Lois and Clark as well. I had no problem with breaking up the marriage, but how it was done could not have been more moronic.
writers seem to have trouble with married characters across the board if you look at tv besides sitcoms shows tend to break couples up as soon as they get them together
I’m pretty comfortable with a married Superman, he’s always been the “Big Brother/Fatherly protector” add in his mid-west up bringing and apple pie appeal Supes outta all of the superheroes would get married.
Hell he even has the cute dog all he needs is the white picket fence and two 1/2 kids
I like Lois and Clark married. I think it needs a good writer though. Lois doesn’t need to just be “Superman’s wife”. She can have much more of a story in the books.
It’s not because that they broke the marriage up that upsets me now, it’s that they broke it up because he’s so damn lazy and doesn’t want him and his writers to have to put any effort into a story that is already existing. It seems insulting to readers who invested time and money into it, it also shows just how much craftsmanship and pride he puts into his work and expects out of others under him.
You feel the same about Lois and Clark, I don’t know man, I don’t really like Superman without Lois.

Superman and Lois Lane are inseparable. Thankfully DC actually respects their most popular character.
I’m not saying Lois shouldn’t be there in Clark’s life, but married? That’s a whole other ballgame. Superman went, what… 50, 60 years without getting married, and then one editorial decision at DC has to change that. Now we’ll never be treated to another Lori Lemaris type of story, or the hint of romance between him and Wonder Woman that Byrne used to tease us with during his run.
Creative teams shouldn’t mess with characters too much. Giving Reed and Sue Richards another kid is fine. They’re a family. It doesn’t change the dynamic of the book. But part of the fun of Superman was that Lois never knew Clark’s identity. It changed everything when she found out, and later, when they got married. And now when you have a storyline like the one that’s happening now where Superman is off somewhere else doing his thing, it’s completely awkward that he left Lois behind so easily.
If Lois couldn’t make out Clarks identity then she’s a retard and a shit reporter. Fine if you don’t want them married but Lois spending so much time with him not realising that Clark is Superman is ludicrous beyond belief.

I’m not married myself, but I have no problems with heroes being married. I epsecially don’t have a problem with Superman being married. Not only has Lois been written as his love interest for over 70 years, I don’t want DC to turn Clark into a manwhore like Marvel has done with Peter Parker. The only other possible loves for Clark are a mermaid and his childhood sweetheart. I’d actually prefer Gwen Stacy over MJ for Peter but she was dead before I was born.

I have no problem with suspension of disbelief, Pet Avengers would hardly be one of my favourite titles if I was reliant on hyper-realism however, there is suspension of disbelief and then there is just plain ridiculous.

I think it depends on the title to what degree you suspend belief when reading it. “Chew” and “X-Men Noir” have separate standards of whats appropriate realism-wise to me.

a big fan of Silver Age JLA and Superman stories. But with
characters like Superman and Batman, there are going to be alot
of ideas added to the overall mythos, and some are going to be

with the superdog. But Lois not being able to recognize Clark
Kent is not an idea that stands the test of time.
How many people think Wonder Woman should have the invisible
plane in the currrent series? With an invisible interior and
invisible controls, so you can still see her squating in mid-air?
What was charming in the 60’s is a dumb idea today.
Wonder Woman’s jet was a prop, and a silly one at that. Just like Spider-Man with his Spidey-mobile. And we can toss in Robin’s green panties and bare legs while we’re at it. You’re right in that some things just don’t fly today.
But the thing with Lois never knowing who Clark’s true identity was an integral part of the storyline. It was so ironic that one of the best reporters on the planet couldn’t figure it out. But that’s just one of those conventions you have to accept with comic books. Yes, in real life, everyone should be able to figure out who Clark Kent is, not just Lois. A pair of glasses and hiding the hair curl? Perry and Jimmy should get it too. Just like everyone should get that Batman could only be Bruce Wayne, with his identical height and build. Whom else could afford those “wonderful toys,” as Joker said in the Burton movie? Just like everyone should get that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, who just happens to be around to take every picture of Spidey in action.
These are conventions that we totally accept and are fine with as kids. And you want to keep those same conventions around for the next generation to enjoy.
With Superman it’s different. I don’t want him dating Wonder Woman or anything silly like that. He has always been a one woman guy. It’s always been Lois and Clark, and that’s an important part of the mythos. When written right, the Superman story is also a great love story. I don’t think tossing the marriage out would make writing Superman any easier. Lois Lane is Superman’s humanity. Why should Superman lie to the woman he loves? It never protected her, she got into just as much trouble when she didn’t know who he was.
That said, I don’t think the movies should ever go there. Classic Superman is what works best on screen, not the bastardization that Bryan Singer envisioned.
How you feel about the movies is how I feel about the comics. So there ya go.
Once you marry off Superman & Lois, at what point do they start having kids? The wedding issue took place… what… 12 years ago? At some point it’s gonna feel weird that they’ve been married as long as they have and there’s no children. So now we’re headed into Singer territory. I hated it on the screen and I’d hate it even more in the comics. They’re just further changing the character.

I do agree with you on the no kids thing, and it wouldn’t kill me if they weren’t married. I just don’t mind it is all. I think the Super books should focus a little more on Clark’s life as well as Superman’s adventures.

Well, Dan Slott has done this but with others stories its more focused on the villains than Spidey, if they focused on Spidey it would kind of strengthen the argument, not tha much but it was still give some validity.
But all in all I stick wiv my idea as better because even when Spidey is with other people it feels wrong, whereas if he’d seperated from MJ and done that it would have felt that way but we would have been going through wot Peter was going through as well.

I think what it really shows is how whiney comic book creators are today. If the slightest thing about a character bothers them, they remove it as quickly as possible. When I’m writing I enjoy working with constraints because it shows that I can handle a challenge and not just write whatever I want. Joey Q. seems to have forgotten that the best writers can flourish with the ingredients given to them.

The Fantastic Four are a family. That’s part of their identity. Spidey was never supposed to get the hot girl. Peter Parker is basically Charlie Brown with super powers. Charlie Brown never kicks the football. Peter always has the worst luck. When they married him, they totally f’d with his basic identity. I never liked the marriage, and that’s what partly why I ended up giving up Spider-Man.
You can’t have a character around for almost 50 years and have no character progression. If the character dosen’t grow then really, whats the fucking point of publishing it?, just to repeat the same tropes over and over?, Spidey fights villain, spidey gets ass kicked, spidey wins, peter parker gets a crush on a girl, petey gets rejected….and on and on and on…what is the point of that? Is it just comfort reading, is it just nostalgia after a lost childhood? that seems like a hollow empty shell of a character to me.
And yet Bruce Wayne is exactly the same. No complaints about him?
I’m a huge DC guy but Bruce is one of my least favorite JLA members. He may not get much in terms of character progression but he occasionally gets a personality transplant.
Indeed, most of the time Bruce has the personality of a potted plant.
Even though I know that it’s temporary, this is why I like the idea of Dick acting as Batman for awhile. He’s got a personality and is likable. DC was supposedly going to make Bruce a little more likable after Infinite Crisis but after awhile it was clear that not all writers got the message.
This idea is for everyone on here who has Facebook or considering it. Who here thinks it would be awesome if E and J started a Facebook C.C.W. T.V. fan page?! 😛

I liked First Wave, alright it was nothing special but maybe could get better as it goes. Now I think it’s odd that The Marvel Project is almost done and it basically doing the same thing with the Marvel U(odd how that always works that way). So I say if you like Azzarello pick it up, it may not be 100 Bullets but it could be the start of something more.
Azzarello…..I’m still thinking of that terrible Superman story he wrote whenever I see his name.
I liked the first issue a lot more than the Bats/Doc Savage one-shot that came out a few months ago.

Yes much better, I thought that one-shot was garbage, but when I saw First Wave in color compared to all the previews that were black and white, it had a different feel then what i was expecting.
I just finished reading the first TPB of Ultimate Spider-Man from 10 yrs ago. Man, where did that Bendis go? If he wrote Avengers books like he did this, I probably be buyin’ them. Good reading expierence I must say.
I love Powers. I adore Powers. I think that’s far and away Bendis’s best work. Goldfish was pretty good. His work on Ultimate Spider-Man is alright, but what annoys me no end is his need to reveal Spidey’s identity in seemingly every issue. The dude clearly hates secret identities.
His Avengers stuff annoys me no end. How I long for the days of Roger Stern.
No kiddding. I loved his early stuff on New Avengers. But after Civil War, the book tanked in quality.
Just read Nemesis… gotta say, I’m starting to agree with Jose. McNiven’s art was supremely lacking. What the hell happened, it wasn’t even as good as OML, the preview pages were the best looking pages in the book. It did remind me a lot of Leinel Yu, but not as good. I don’t know if it was the coloring, but his style looked a lot different. And the story did nothing for me. Boo Nemesis.

By Great Achilles heel, I hope McNiv has’nt gone all experimentally. Gorilla Grodd knows I preferred Sienkiewicz when he was aping Adams. I swear if Mc’s taken a “hey ma, look no hands approach I’m gonna get some hair growth product just so I can pull my hair out!
McNiven has always been a run of the mill artist but some people are impressed by the detail he throws in (when he can be bothered) but he certainly is no Geoff Darrow thats for sure.
Its no surprise that Millar likes Mcniven, because they are quite similar, style over substance all the way.
Well, Geof is pretty much in a category by himself. I will say this tho, some folks run of the mill is other folks right on target.

I’m happy I’m not alone in thinking McNiven is just a “run of the mill” artist. All of his characters appear so stiff and they keep looking up at weird angles like they’re posing for a MySpace picture. All the acclaim he got for Civil War was lost on me(although I thought the book was poorly written as well and some people feel it’s award worthy).
Gotta disagree McNiven is top notch, don’t let him alining himself with Millar cloud your opinion of the guy.
I’d take him over a Khoi Pham or Mike McKone anyday
No it’s not Millar. I just don’t like McNiven’s art. I hate the writing of Bendis & Loeb but I still love the art of Coipel and McGuinness.

Even though I usually like JRJr’s work(although his dad is a million times better imo), I can understand someone not liking his work. It’s overly stylized and doesn’t work on every type of book.

The art was just pretty boring to me, which made the already pathetic story even MORE boring, I don’t know I may get the next issue just to see if it picks up at all.
I don’t believe they inked McNiven’s pencils. That was the problem I had with the art, and it will probably stay like that 😦

So how do we feel about the casting of Angela “I should have been Storm” Bassett as Amanda Waller in the Green Lantern movie? It seems that even though they’re casting older women for the role(Pam Grier plays her on Smallville), Warner Bros is still too nervous to cast an obese woman. They keep going with Milfs instead of someone who looks like Monique or Nell Carter(RIP). I’m also surprised she’s going to be in the movie since she has more to do with Suicide Squad than GL. I’d say maybe WB is going to attempt to have her start the JLA Initiative at the end of this movie ala Nick Fury in Iron Man, but Christopher Nolan has already said he doesn’t want Batman or Superman crossing over with other DCU movies.
Pam Grier just aint what she used to be, shes a bigger lady now. I still watch smallville and thought that was a good casting move, now Angela bassett is not, I cant see her being as powerful Waller needs to be.
That just means there’s more to love! I do like my Foxy Brown 🙂

I hate Oprah so much that not only am I counting the days until she leaves my city, I get physically ill when I think of the way everyone acts like she’s the female Jesus. She’s a lucky broad who stole Phil Donahue’s shtick, hired the right business manager, realized how dumb & easily led daytime TV viewers & celebrities are, and puts the “O” in narcissism.
I’m not a fan, but she’s at least done some good charity work, wouldn’t you say?

Even though Batman Begins is one of my favorite superhero movies and Michael Caine as Alfred & Gary Oldman as James Gordon were perfect casting, I will have no problem if Batman is rebooted and/or put into someone else’s hands. Just as long as it isn’t Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher again.
I think a JLA film would be the biggest clusterfuck ever. Too many characters in costumes and too many backstories to try and manage. Just do solo franchises.
That’s why you make solo movies first and later a JLA movie. That’s what Marvel is doing.
But with Marvel, their characters were created to be in a shared universe so it works. DC’s weren’t. They were just the most popular characters in the house and eventually became a shared universe.
Fact is, Superman and Batman do not go that well together. We may like seeing it since we love the characters, but in story terms, they just don’t. When you have a guy like Superman and a lady like Wonder Woman, all the other characters seem useless. Which is why they are de-powered and bastardized (Superman on JLU).
I just can’t see a live action movie with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, and Aquaman together not being the silliest thing ever.
We’ll just have to agree to disagree. 8) While DC’s heroes may not have always been a part of one universe, they’ve been together longer than they’ve been apart. I also feel Marvel has enough of their own versions of DC characters that would make them having a shared universe seem just as silly if you wanted to look at it that way. Isn’t Thor, Moon Knight, Hercules, Nova, Quicksilver, and Namor together just as bad as the DCU characters you listed?
I would have loved to see a Ridley Scott Batman film. I’m talking Alien/Blade Runner Ridley Scott, not A Good Year Ridley Scott. David Fincher also comes to mind as someone who has the dark visual aesthetic and experience with effects to pull it off….any other directors come to mind?
I wouldn’t mind seeing a Luc Besson Batman. I think “Blade Runner” Ridley would blow my mind. Would have loved to have seen that. Good call.

CCW is like a refuge from the insanity of the “real world”. I first started coming here since it is one of the only places online that calls Marvel on their shit instead of acting like they can do no wrong. The Dark Knight and Spiderman 2 are just great films in general. Iron Man takes the cake as best comic adapted superhero film though.
Robert Downey Jr. was just a pitch perfect Tony Stark. The story was great. Pepper Potts was realized as a character and it was just wicked enjoyable from start to finish.
