CCW Weekend Open Thread

Posted: March 27, 2010 in CCW Nation, CCW Open Thread

Man, you bad dudes really destroyed the last open thread, huh? 342 comments and counting. I am a little blown away by the amount of comments on the blog as of late…and that’s a very good thing. Please keep it up and continue to have fun on here. I’ll hopefully have some capsule snippet reviews up for you all eventually.

Also, due to the amount of traffic we have getting on the blog lately (and me losing my shit earlier in the week) Elliott and I think it would be best if I handled the comments and questions on the blog while he handles those things over on the youtube channel. So, you may not see me commenting as much over there anymore which is fine by me. I’m happier “slumming it” over on the blog with you guys and gals anyway.

  1. cballsack says:

What better way to start off a new thread than with a mention of the movie that I know EVERYONE is anticipating this summer: Batman XXX.

    • Venom829 says:

Sorry, cballsack, that didn’t do it for me. This is Friday night, and tomorrow night is the best night of the weekend, Saturday. So I’ll try to gt in the Saturfay Night spirit with this:

      • cballsack says:

Yeah, but it’s a real porno that’s coming out, not just some Youtube skit.

I’m pretty sure I’ll enjoy it more than Dark Knight. Gods, that movie is soooo overrated.

        • tomstewdevine says:

cballsack, what are some of your favorite movies? I feel like you have a really high standard when it comes to movies. I would love to hear what you are comparing these movies to.

          • cballsack says:

Are we talking superhero movies or just movies in general?

I didn’t hate the Dark Knight. I just thought it was alright, like the way the Ang Lee’s Hulk was alright (which I actually like more upon repeated viewings, but that’s another story). If you’re gonna take the approach that this is a realistic look at the superhero genre, then don’t include ridiculous scenes like in the beginning, with the Joker crashing a bus into the middle of a bank in broad daylight, which didn’t draw a crowd or summon the cops either, while the bank manager started shooting off his gun and sounding like the worst cliched tough guy in cinema.

Ledger was mostly alright, but his performance at times reminded me of a cross between Stuart Smalley, the character that Al Franken played on SNL, and Hannibal Lecter. I remember thinking that while watching the movie, and then I saw a reviewer make the precise same cross comparison in New York Magazine (which I found funny).

The fight scenes were horrible. I really hate those rapid edit cuts. And the scenes with Batman looking through his eye-radar thingie was just too much after awhile. Bats spent way more time fighting police dogs in the movie than the Joker or Two Face. And that fight with Two Face… was that a joke? Watch it again. Batman tackles him from off-screen, like he just comes flying out of nowhere. It looked so dumb, like a college film. And that was it, the entire fight. That had to be the dopiest battle of any superhero movie. Like ever.

And let’s not even discuss Christian Bale’s voice.

            • tomstewdevine says:

No I see where your saying the dark knight is overrated for sure, I liked it, but I’m pretty easy to please. I would actually like to hear the films you do like though. The ones that you hold in the highest regard.

            • That Bat-Voice was fucking laughable in The Dark Knight. It was just too much. I remember Avi and I snickering in the theater whenever Bats would talk.

              • cballsack says:

What makes it so ironic is that Bale is an awesome Bruce Wayne. But as Batman he’s a joke.

                • SMARTASS8 says:

For awhile Bale was one of my favorite actors but after his over-the-top Batman in The Dark Knight and his bland performance in Terminator:Salvation(the equally bland Sam Worthington had more charisma in that movie than Bale), I don’t know if I can still say that. He needs another American Psycho to bump his acting creds.

                  • cballsack says:

I would have loved a scene in Batman where he turns to Alfred and says that he needs to return some videotapes.

              • Morlock50 says:

I’m not wearing hockey pants! GRRRR!

Actually, I saw that movie 4 times and I swear they altered his voice in the later viewings because it didn’t sound quite as stupid to my ears.

          • Morlock50 says:

The Dark Knight sucked compared to Citizen Kane πŸ™‚

        • I liked The Dark Knight for what it was but, yes, it IS overrated. Elliott and I talked about that a while ago on an old video.

          • SMARTASS8 says:

What almost ruined the movie for me was James Gordon Jr’s bad acting at the movie’s end which prompts the lame speech his father gives. The other scene that bothered me was the group of criminals on the boat who turned out to be heroes. Wayyy too precious for me. I also felt Eckhart’s Two-Face was just as good if not better than Ledger’s Joker(if Ledger deserved an Oscar nod then so did Eckhart). Don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie, but I found it overrated and not nearly as perfect as some people felt. The sad thing is that it still ended up in my Top 10 list for superhero movies since I had bigger problems with so many other films in that genre.

            • cballsack says:

I agree completely about Eckhart. You would think he wasn’t even in the movie. His performance was rock solid, yet he barely registers a mention when people discuss the film. It’s always how great Ledger was.

            • cballsack says:

And I agree about the criminal boat turning into heroes. I mean, come on, that was Zeus tossing away the detonator.

            • I have a feeling the Eckhart will be forever underrated no matter what he does. He is a great actor in my eyes.

            • Venom829 says:

I actually liked that speech, it was a good way to end of a such a glorious movies. At least that’s my thought.

          • Edward2962 says:

Hi.I don’t know if you guys have seen this interview, but it’s kinda interesting. In it Steve Englehart basically claims that The Dark Knight movie ripped off plot points from a Batman story he wrote called Dark Detective 2. check it out

    • phil says:

It keeps giving me an error occurred. geez!
Anybody see Sex Trek? Best adult cinema parody ever!!
On an unrelated topic; is everyone ready for the James Bond spin-off: I’m Pussy,Pussy Galore in surround sound…….and feel, get the popcorn 8

    • generaldark says:

omg nikki rhodes is going to be in it?? i love her!!!….i mean…yea thats cool i geuss…

    • Deemar says:

      As the BLACK THUNDER!!!

  2. tomstewdevine says:

I just got back from a show, the band is called Solution. Check them out, it was great. But to comics I finally got a chance to read the new Uncanny X-Men, I really glad that Kitty’s back, but this Magneto, I don’t know if I like the way Fraction is portraying him.

    • I have that issue sitting in my stack of unread books right now. Hopefully I’ll get to it tomorrow.

      • SMARTASS8 says:

Other than a few muties, I’ve never been a big X-Men fan. Since I’ve been a big Kitty Pride fan since her mini with Wolverine in the 80’s, I’m curious as to how Fraction’s X-Men is. I used to hear that it paled in comparison to his Iron Man(sort of how Brubaker’s X-Men was said to pale in comparison to his Cap), but has it gotten better?

        • tomstewdevine says:

I wouldn’t say its gotten better, it still not to the level of greatness that Iron-man is. But I’m a life long x-men fan and it is the only book that I will pick up regardless of who the creators are. So I have seen many low’s in the book, right now it’s just stuck on a mediocre run.

        • Deemar says:

I’ve avoided the X-men since Messiah Complex, now Kitty is back I’m gonna check out a few issues or wait for a review

        • Morlock50 says:

          Survey says….No.

  3. tomstewdevine says:

I just got mine finished today, my favorite book of the week was Scalped, Aaron just continues to shine.

  4. Bobcat1489 says:

  5. cballsack says:

If you want a good laugh…

  6. cballsack says:

    And here is part two.

  7. phil says:

Here’s some questions/theories I want to toss at you guye ann gals and let me know what your take is.
On BlackestNight: Thus far all the heavy hitters, b, c, and d listers of the formerly living have had speaking parts but when Bats shows, he’s mute?
My take is.. either that was not Batman, but MartianManhunter just messin’ with their heads, or that was Batman, but Neckron silenced him because he didn’t want it found out that, that was actually the Earth 2 Batman that was summoned.

    • Luiz de Mello says:

Considering that the Black Rings ‘wear’ the dead bodies and they (apparently) follow the will of Nekron, it is probably that Nekron was controlling that particular ring directly so he could get the effect that he desired.

      • tomstewdevine says:

I guess my take was Johns didn’t want Batman to be a main character in the series. So he left bats as the strong silent type. But I like these other predictions, I didn’t look at it by that perspective.

    • AvS says:

Phil, I’m pretty sure they’ve already cleared up whether that was the skeleton of Bruce Wayne or not in ‘Batman and Robin’ #’s 7-9.

  8. phil says:

    Questions/theories pt2
Do you think that Batman (bruce) caan be folde back into his own continuity, seemlessly? If we’re to believe that Bats died, then how does Bruce rsconsile what has happened to him? He’s always been a man of reason, of logic of science. In the pages of Batman or Detective, I can’t envision Batman having flashbacks about Darkseid. Can you?

    • Rob F says:

I know it’s an old example but he has to figure if Oliver Queen can come back, he’s probably got a decent shot.

      • phil says:

Be that as it may, the two main Bat titles, be it by intention or be it by happenstance were always grounded in reality ( Okay , maybe a psuedo heightened reality… Creeper Killer Croc Manbat etc…)
        Batman but still
Batman has always been able to reason out things so that they made sense to him. He could always, well almost always explain people off using the laws of physics. Heck, I don’t even think he thinks Deadman is dead. Batman probably has him pegged as someone whose tapped into a different vibrational reality that can occasionally delve into his reality.
If we see future issues of Batman where he’s confiding to Dick and Barbara about his time being dead or even in some sort of limbo, that will be taking Batman in some direction that will make the Spiderclone saga seem like the good ol’ days.

    • Deemar says:

Well I figure it’s essentially a time travel story for Bruce so aside from Darkseid’s involvement it fits right in with typical superhero stories.

  9. phil says:

    Questions and theoris part2b
On the other hand, at the end of final crisis when Bats and Darkseid take each other out, what if that was a dead body but not Batman’s. What if it was one of those Manhunter dopplegangers that had its memory buried so deep he thought he was Batman. No psychic would know because there would be nothing to trigger their senses, mystics would not know because there would be nothing to trigger their suspicions. The only problem their is you know somebody would cry (skrull ripoff)
    Any thoughts?

  10. generaldark says:

can anybody else believe we have a user named “cballsack” on here??? 0_0

  11. Dan Griffin says:

Anybody watch Batman: Brave and the Bold last night?

Awesome Episode because Kevin Conroy voiced The Batman of Zuh en Arrh, and Clancy Brown Voiced Rohtul (Zuh en Arrh’s Lex Luthor), and correct if i’m wrong but i do believe that the woman that voiced the Zuh en Arrh Lois Lane character was the same that voice Lois in Superman: TAS.

Also the episode had a great 1950’s sci-Fi feel too it. One of my favorite episodes now.

    • generaldark says:

batman zur en arrh was on there??/ i must watch it!!!

      • tomstewdevine says:

The super-batman of planet x, I will watch anything batman if Kevin Conroy is doing the voice. He is hands down the best batman voice ever, they should have dubbed his voice over Christian Bale’s.

  12. vegedge says:

why dont we have a forum on here. you could have a whol seperate section for questions, news, random threads. even by company. like cbr minus all the lame ads and unbiased.

Just curious. In the past year I’ve evolved into a rugby nut job. Does anyone know of any comics depicting the sport? I’m trying to find some to scan and get some backgrounds and such.

  14. vegedge says:

i love curling so i really would find it funny.

  15. Smallmaniac says:

Anyone like Free Comic Book Day? I have no job and unemployment=no comics, so I’m looking forward to it. Especially the Mouse Guard book.

    • tomstewdevine says:

I love it, my local shop, Rainbow Comics in Sioux Falls SD, has huge discounts on everything that day like 75% off all back stock, I usually save up and drop like $100 that day.

    • phil says:

So far I have not missed a free comic book day. In fact when I time it right, I try to make it to 2 stores
Comic books and Jones Soda, can’t beat the combination.
Besides your weekend is not complete until you’ve had a soda made to taste like potatoes and gravy. Now thats a good time!!

  16. Mike F says:

I’m currently torn as to whether I should buy Ken’s theme from iTunes or Ryu’s theme. Both are so epic and are preparing for the upcoming “expansion” like sequel to SF 4.

US Politician: β€œAnime is Why Two Nukes Wasn’t Enough”

    • Mike F says:

Ugh. I’m not surprised by this. People who are new to anime, come into it and generally feel offended by its cute-ness or its graphic/mature scenes and don’t bother to understand that a lot of it is really well written and takes a lot of hard workers to make.

I’m not the BIGGEST anime fan really I only dig cyberpunk themes (Ghost in the shell, Akira, Bubblegum Crisis, Evangelion, Lain and Gantz and Code Geass are good) but I still dont think that’s a smart thing to say. Even for a retarded high schooler punk, your just asking for trouble. Anime fans are some of the most committed devoted fans and I would never wanna offend them. (Plus I am one πŸ˜‰

      • Mike F says:

*when I say ‘retarded high schooler punk’ i mean the kids in my high school who offened & mocked me cause I liked anime. to hear a politician say it seems way more wrong tho, he’s a rep for our country and after bombing japan really, the last thing we should do is insult them like that.

        I deff wouldn’t vote for this douche-bag.

    • AvS says:

That guy is pretty classy. I heard this guy wanted to change the NH State Motto to ‘Live Free or Anime.’ True Story.

    • tomstewdevine says:

It is sickening to think about how many shitty people are elected officials.

    • Morlock50 says:

This guy sounds like a real asshole.

    • Smallmaniac says:

This just shows people refuse to accept that the greatest terrorist attack in U.S. history was when we bombed Japan. Ignorance is bliss I guess. And it also produces some awful comments.

  19. Luiz de Mello says:

You people are too negative, here is something to cheer you up. It works for me.

  20. ullar says:

So what are you guys’ thoughts on this weeks comics? I really liked Mighty Avengers, Secret Warriors, T-bolts, ASM and Cap. I also liked Nemesis, not because it was good but because every once in a while I like watching things go insanely over the top. I liked Kick-Ass for the same reason.

    • tomstewdevine says:

I gave up on Secret Warriors after I read like 8 issues, and still nothing had happened, the plot was moving so slow. Has that books pace sped up at all? Mighty Avengers I read But didn’t enjoy. As for the rest, Thunderbolts it’s the only good book that’s tied into Siege, I just finished the rhino vs rhino ASM and that issue was damn near perfect in my book. Captain America was good as always, I really do appreciate the backup story, at least I don’t feel completely ripped off for paying 3.99.

      • Mike F says:

Its funny you said that about Secret Warriors. Each month it goes up and down for me. Like 13 was really good and ended really cool for me, but then this months was a bit slower but had a cool ending I guess. I kept saying “if next months isn’t a step up I’ll drop it” but I never do cause I think oh well if it was bad this month next month will be good.

Hickman is really astonishing with FF. So, I feel like I should just push thru the slow parts of Secret Warriors. I love Nick Fury too so I wanna keep up the stories.

        • tomstewdevine says:

Ya, FF just continues to be so much fun. Hickman is tearing that series apart, it’s great. But I don’t know how to feel about Nick Fury. He’s sometimes just to bad-ass for his own good. Once people start telling me it’s great, then I will start picking Secret Warriors up again.

          • What a coincidence. I just finished writing a quick review for Secret Warriors along with some other books. I’ll have those reviews up on here within the hour.

          • Deemar says:

I hope Hickman has a nice long run on FF, his SHIELD series looks to be epic

            • Mike F says:

The new coming SHIELD series really has a lot to live up to for me. I mean DaVinci in shield? I always LOL when ever I read that on the Marvel set. But, Hickman is a good writer so I’m gonna grab this one. I just really hope he can make it work. I really can’t picture it…

              • ullar says:

FF has been amazing and SHIELD will be epic. As for Secret Warriors, I think it’s every bit as good as FF but the problem is in how it is delivered. The book is formatted like a novel where we have a large cast of characters and keep jumping between them and various plot lines. Reading it in 22 page chunks one month at a time makes it seem slow but reading 3 or 4 issues in a row makes it so much better.

  21. Mike F says:

I think we reached the limit on that thread section. So I thought I’d start fresh and say FF13 really is driving me crazy. I’m actually playing this one on xbox 360. But, not for long. I recently sold my 360 to my friend to get my PS3 and I’ve only played a few games for PS3 so far. Metal Gear 4 was a must in my book. Yakuza and I got Heavy Rain just haven’t invested the time in it. I just played a bit and it already felt really fun.

But yeah FF13, the plot feels so complex. I mean I love a detailed storyline but I feel like I have to do homework when I’m not playing just to prepare myself. Plus the music is not for me. Without Nobuo, its just a downgrade. But, the graphics are so great, and the character designs are stunning as well.

  22. Ironmuskrat says:

Poor nerds, they had no idea what they were in for..

  23. phil says:

Hey its the week-end everybody, and over in the D. Its 7:44 as I’m typing and not yet at 200….. what gives?

  24. Rob F says:

Ok so here’s something that bothered me. So I was reading an article about Magneto online and it listed him as a Max Eisenhardt. What?!? For the first 20 or so years of my life I’v known the Master of Magnetism as Eric Lensherr. I go on to read that the whole business about ‘Max’ was revealed in 08. Does anyone else get tired of all the ‘every thing you thought you knew about your favorite characters wasn’t true’? I’m all for telling new and compelling stories but between this and the whole story with Vulcan the new writers are making me think that it’s not worth picking up new stories when they change all the old stuff.

  25. BAMMMFFF!!!!

    Biggest Fan Ever?

  27. Where the Hell is Smartass8!!!!!?????? I wrote capsule reviews for him tonight!!!

  28. I’m watching “From Dusk Till Dawn” on cable right now. I remember seeing this in the theater with my buddy Randy. What a great fucking movie.

    • tomstewdevine says:

Yes that movie is excellent. I’m watching Blade Runner on VHS, always a classic.

      • Dude, I watched that movie on Blu-ray a month ago and it was like watching it again for the first time. Blade Runner is in my Top 5 favorite movies of all time.

        • tomstewdevine says:

          Nice, I need a blu-ray.

        • Mike F says:

Blade Runner – definitely a great among Cyberpunk films, but Harrison’s narration is really poor. I always feel like he never practiced – just went in the studio and read the lines.

          • AvS says:

If you check out the director’s cut you can enjoy the film without the narration.

          • That’s exactly what Ford did. You should really check out the Final Cut box set that came out. There is a 3 hour documentry on there with hours of bonus features. It’s really quite amazing the amount of stuff they put into it.

            • AvS says:

Jose, have you been keeping up with BOOM’s ‘Electric Sheep’? Anything to write home about? I got the first four, read #’s 1 and 2, still have #’s 3,4 to read in fact. But I wasn’t that into it so I stopped getting it monthly.

              • Ya, I stopped buying it too after a few issues. I’ve already read the book so I just felt like I could just read it again instead paying money to read the comic adaptaion. I do like the look and format of the comic though.

    • cballsack says:

Salma Hayek is a goddess in that movie. It doesn’t get any hotter.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

Unfortunately From Dusk Til Dawn is one of those movies given crappy sequels that hurt the movie’s greatness(Darkman, Matrix, Look Who’s Talking…um…forget that last one LOL!)

  29. Chris says:

Kick-Ass has 95% of Rotten Tomatoes! I have some non-comic reading friends who want to see it and are trying to drag me along. They seem to think that I’d enjoy it because “they read its based on a comic”. If I end up going I will report back to you guys!

  30. Edward2962 says:

This is a different topic, but has anyone seen a movie called “Overnight”? It’s a documentary on Troy Duffy the guy who made Boondock Saints. The reason I want to see it is I rented Boondocks 2 (yeah, yeah,I was only $1 cut me some slack) and on the special features, Duffy seems to have the biggest ego about his films. He says something like,”Most sequels in Hollywood suck,we waited cuz we didn’t want to let the fans down.” And it’s like dude, have you watched the movie you just made?
Anyway,I guess the doc is about the filming of Boondocks 1 and how he ends up alienating everyone?

    • tomstewdevine says:

Oh I’ve seen it. If you have any respect for Troy Duffy you won’t after watching this film. He could have been very successful, but he blows it all by being a stubborn dick. I’m pretty sure he was all coked out during the entire documentary. But the best part is Boondock Saints made like $50,000,000 in video sales, but because Duffy’s an idiot, he signed a contract where he wasn’t entitled to any of the home video sales.

      • Edward2962 says:

That’s what I read. That it was going to be a Miramax film and some big names were originally attached, but because he pissed off so many ppl,he was forced to sign a crappy contract just to get Boondocks 1 made.

    • Rob F says:

I really enjoy both movies but yeah Duffy is an ego maniac.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

I came late to the whole Boondocks thing. I had heard of it but never saw it. The first movie I saw was the second one at the theaters last year and it sucked. For some reason I still went and saw the first one when they had it at the theaters for 1 night a couple weeks ago. It was a guilty pleasure that was practically ruined by the last 15 minutes(another stupid movie ending speech, a relationship revelation that wasn’t very clear unless you saw the sequel first, and an excuse to have Willem Dafoe in drag.

I haven’t seen Overnight but I heard about it on Ebert & Roeper. While I’m sure Duffy did have a problem with his ego, every single crew member from the first movie came back for the sequel. He couldn’t be 100% bad with that kind of loyalty. I have XM radio in my car(it was in the car when I bought it and I kept the subscription going) and on it there’s a radio show called Ron & Fez. Ron (Bennington) is an ex-stand-up comedian and a cross between a shock jock and a legit radio host. He has his own little show on the side for XM/Sirius where he interviews celebrities one-on-one. In one interview he interviews the 2 “Saints”, Billy Connolly, and Troy Duffy. It’s available here if you scroll down to the 3rd row from the bottom…

  31. Mr.Wrestling says:

    Anybody here watch WrestleMania tonight?

  32. SMARTASS8 says:

Shogun Warriors was a little before my time(I only remember it for the Marvel Comic in the $0.50 boxes) but there’s talk of a movie on AintItCool. I know some of you guys here like Japanese culture so I thought you might like to see the little teaser they’ve worked on.

I think it looks cool as hell!!!

    • littlekingryan* says:

I have absolutely no knowledge of the source material, but that teaser looks just plain awesome. And building the robots as practical full-scale models? Crazy enough to be a genius move.

        • littlekingryan* says:

Wow, looks like Voltron, basically. Gotta love that snappy tune.

        • SMARTASS8 says:

Jose, you seem really knowledgeable when it comes to anime. Is Gaiking any good? Also, have you ever seen Machine Robo(the basis for a lot of the Gobots toys), Lupin III(I remember playing a Dragon’s Lair style game of it at Enchanted Castle as a kid), or Golgo 13(I loved the 8-bit Nintendo game as a kid since they alluded to your character having sex with some chick. LOL!)? I’m not averse to anime, but since I never know where to start I’ve only seen the usual fare(Akira, Fist Of The North Star, Ninja Scroll, Voltron, Ghost In The Shell, Tranzor Z and Vampire Hunter D).

          • I haven’t seen too much of Gaiking so I can’t really comment on the quality of the show. The only reason I know of it is because I like the some other series that the creator, Go Nagai, did like Tranzor Z and Cutey Honey. I have seen Lupin III and like it as well as seeing one of the old Golgo 13 movies.

I really kind of have gotten out of anime in the last few years because there hasn’t been too much that has caught my interest. I was really into it from the mid eighties and all through the 90’s so that’s where most of my knowledge lies. I almost know more about older anime than I do about older comics.

There is so much anime that where to start all depends on what you’re interested in. I like a lot of the old anime from the 60’s and 70’s for their designs and most of the newer stuff for the stories.

Some of my favorites include Paranoia Agent, Gunbuster,His and Her Circumstances, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, Macross, Macross Plus, Boogiepop Phantom, Megazone 23, Evangelion, FLCL, Vision of Escaflowne and Project A-Ko. I seriously can go on for hours about all the anime that I have. In some ways it really is quite ridiculous/sad how much a have. I have seen all the ones you have mentioned though.
