CCW Question of the Week

Posted: April 2, 2010 in DC Comics, Question of the Week

This week’s question:

“What titles, if any, are you looking forward to reading from DC’s Brightest Day event?”

Like Ironmuskrat wrote in the last post, I too was quite disappointed in the “conclusion” of Blackest Night (maybe I’ll do a small write up on it in the next couple of days). Now that it is over this seems like as good a time as any to cut down on the DC titles I buy. Having said that, I will be giving the main Brightest Day series a few issues only because I am curious where this is going to go. After getting little to no resolution in Blackest Night the first few issues of Brightest Day “have got some explainin’ to do” and it better do so fast.

As for the other Brightest Day series launching the ONLY one I am looking forward to is Birds of Prey. I was collecting that series for awhile before it got canceled and am now glad to see it returning. I’ll still be picking up Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps mostly because I was doing so long before Blackest Night ever came around but I was close to dropping the regular GL title before Blackest Night so we’ll see what happens there. I have absolutely no interest in the other Brightest Day titles but will probably read them regardless (while at work) just to keep up with things and possibly for reviewing.

  1. vegedge says:

jose, do you read or skim alot of comics while are work that you dont buy?

the flash series looks really good. hopefully better than the last johns flash run. though iliked his mini’s. rogues revenge and BN:flash

poor poor deadman. hope he is a main part of this new brightest day.

    • I do read some comics that I don’t buy at work if I have time. I also skim through a lot of them since I am the one who puts all the new comics out on the racks at the store.

If the Flash comic was about Wally West I would be buying it.

      • Dan Griffin says:

Oh no J, you’re one of those people?

JK, but i think in Flash Rebirth, Wally really outshined Barry. Without Wally Barry would have lost his wife.

Plus Wally was like to barry in that series.

“Barry, stop being such an Emo bitch and kick Zoom’s Ass already.

      • Mike F says:

I totally agree with Jose. If Wally wasn’t fucking demoted, I’d invest my money in that title. But I refuse and will for now on, stop buying Flash Comics.

A shame too, since I love the Flash.

      • vegedge says:

i read some wally stuff and some barry stuff. not sure who i care for more. excited overall though. it has been hinted to be expanded like johns did for green lantern which could be great.(which means the spin off will be better, flash corps. flash family?)

  2. phil says:

B o P simply for the cheesecake factor. Hey, shallowness can be a virtue!

  3. vegedge says:

i actually am pissed about bird of prey. that artist is extremely sexist in his depictions of women like most dc/marvel artists.

we talk on here alot about millar and bendis degrading women with violence and writing them lesser than males. but to make a cake mold for every female in a comic and present them as eyecandy alone for some awful nerd fantasy gets so fucking old.
i always hate it when the teen teams have women drawn like pornstars and they are ment to be 13-18. look at almost every image of starfire since creation. look at the young avengers now, stature/hawkeye are 15 and catching up on mrs marvel real quick…

they wonder why women do not read comics as much as guys. they draw the horrible male expectation of waht a girl should be, and i know from my friends who are girl, alienate female readers. it causes body image issues and overall less respect for the medium of comics all together.

    • Ya, I am not a fan of Ed Benes at all. Hopefully Nicola Scott will come back to this title at some point.

      • kurumais says:

im psyched hawk and dove are on the team my older brotherwas a fan of them so i got to read most of their original run and i think the hawk and dove was the best thing rob lieffeld ever did. going to be interesting to see hawk on the team
btw what happened to female british hawk cousin girl?

    • littlekingryan* says:

Some artists just suck at drawing different body types, especially younger characters. I don’t know how much of it is sexist pandering and how much of it is just artistic ineptitude, to be honest. Look at how hard a time even decent artists like Andy Clarke have making Damian look even close to the right age in Batman and Robin. Ed Benes has always drawn like Jim Lee’s developmentally disabled cousin. I’m not sure he’s really trying to perpetuate any stereotypes.

      • vegedge says:

not being able to draw someone young is no excuse for drawing every female, 12 years old or not with huge boobs on a petite frame.

i am suprised impulse was not drawn like that in Flash rebirth.

    • phil says:

I’m at least 100lbs overweight, have got (man)maries and I’m sportin’ a keg instead of a 6pack, yet I don’t trip with heroes with arms like tree trunks, legs like they’re chiselled from granite and instead of a keg, they’re luggin’ around a 6pack, at least.
      Are you saying, Vege that males are depicted so much more realistically? For all anyone knows…maybe some of the guys are being “pulled” from PLAY{GIRL}

      • vegedge says:

not at all. males are as bad. every single guy is a body builder and its a kinda letdown. the flash series looks alright about but man look at the past flash books i have never seen so many arnold swarzenagers runnning around.

i am not ‘tripping’ i am venting about what i think is a serious problem. everyone is drawn the same and its annoying from an art standpoint . dc must be passing out ‘how to draw the marvel way’ to everyone coming into now.

        • phil says:

Heroes and heroines are about ideals, if they go about looking like Joe and Jane Q Public, whats the point? Normal Man and AverageLady I don’t think are gonna sell.
I pick up Echo which I enjoy quite a bit that has a female lead that is “realistically drawn”, but she’s the exception to the rule for many mainstream comics.
Myself, I want to be able to see from almost any perspective or angle what gender a character is without knowing who that character is or what the story is about.
But hey, we all have different crosses. Yours is the physical potrayal of people, mine is trying to stomach dozens of characters coming back to the land of the living, when they should have remained dead, geez, now I’m tri–uh venting 🙂

          • tomstewdevine says:

You guys all have good points, but when you read just superhero comics thats for the most part all you will get, and I don’t mind, I like to see my girl heroes be hot. I do mind how a lot of artists draw the younger heroes, but thats just bad art, and we have had to deal with that forever. So all I am saying is if you read a verity of comics you probaley won’t have this problem as much becasue it’s not in every book you read.

          • SMARTASS8 says:

I agree with you phil. I was going to post something similar until I read your post.

    • says:

Have you not seen how 15 y/o dress now days?

  4. IronMuskrat says:

Although I don’t see a comic for it, I am very interested by Deadman’s situation. It seems he holds the key to who was resurrected and who wasn’t at the end of Blackest Night.

  5. Chris says:

Birds of Prey!!!(and one more for good luck)! Why can’t J’onn get his own book?

  6. vegedge says:

anyone else notice sinestro is yellow lantern again on that page? his little pink hand wearing the ring.

  7. Smallmaniac says:

I have a question of the day for anyone willing to answer:

Which album would you buy: She and Him’s Volume Two OR Beach House’s Teen Dream?

  8. Venom829 says:

Everyone except Teen Titans, and Justice League.

  9. Bboyce109 says:

    Brightest Day
    The Flash
Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps
    Titans: Villains For Hire

I am thinking of getting Justice League: Generation Lost just to see what Maxwell Lord is up to now that hes back. I do have a question though, is Birds of Prey a good series. When i saw that they were bringing back the series for Brightest Day i didn’t think much about it. Is it that good of a read or should i pass it?

  10. Like Jose I will give the first few issues of Brightest Day a try and see how I like. Either way is fine with me. I will probably continue buying GL. I may or may not drop GLC after Tomasi and Gleason leave. Don’t get me wrong I think Bedard is an excellent writer, but I’m not a fan of Syaf’s art.

  11. cballsack says:

It pleases me to see Aquaman squarely in the center of the cover. He’s cool. Does he still have that magic water hand or did they give him his real hand back? I stopped reading when they gave him the water hand. That was so dopey.

  12. Rob F says:

Am I the only one who read the name Maxwell Lord and was like ‘really? we’re supposed to care about him again?’

  13. mbell028 says:

def will continue to read GL and GLC (although I will cancel once Tomasi leaves) I’m really not sure if I’m going to buy Brightest Day I’m really curious about it and I think it’ll be good, but I’m not happy that it will be bi-weekly. Granted the story will not drag nearly as long as most events for this reason, but I believe brighest day is 24 issues and thats a lot of money to invest in a single book of an event.

  14. Luiz de Mello says:

I saw that Osiris got resurrected too, and with that ‘They’ve been resurrected – For a Reason’ I have to ask, is there anything confirmed involving the Marvel Family?

Anyway, after seeing the aforementioned teaser, did anyone else remember of Yogurt from Spaceballs “God willing we’ll all meet again in Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money”?

  15. Liquid R says:

Looking forward to GL,GLC,and Birds of Pray, I missed the best female team comic out there, and I was glad DC gave the green light to come back. And maybe like to see why they resurrected everyone, and why there is two bad flashs and what was the point in bring back black adam junior.

  16. heckimlistening says:

I kinda am inclined to check out the Flash series. I wish it was Wally and I wish it wasn’t spinning out of Blackest Night, but I most likely will pick the first ish up.

  17. Edward2962 says:

I’m actually kinda curious as to what they’re going to do with Hawkman and Hawkwoman.Didn’t Jim Starlin do some story that suggested that the John’s origin was false or something?

    • heckimlistening says:

May the gods help him if he did. No one fucks with Geoff Johns, he’ll kill every character you ever loved.

  18. tomstewdevine says:

I will get brightest day, GL, GLC. None of the others really peek my interest.

  19. Deemar says:

    Damn missed a good thread

  20. SMARTASS8 says:

I’m actually looking forward to all of them but the 2 Green Lantern books(I still love Hal & The Corp but I’m a little burnt out on them).

    * Brightest Day (I LOVE J’onn, what Johns has done with Mera, and basically every other character in that picture)

    * Birds Of Prey (I loved what Gail did on the previous series, Benes is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I’m a huge fan of the second generation of Hawk & Dove)

    * Flash (I grew up with Wally but I’m really happy the “Father Of The Silver Age” is back. I basically like the whole Flash family except for Bart)

    * Justice League Generation Lost (JLI was my introduction to the Justice League outside of Super Friends. One of my favorite books of all time. Now BRING back Ted Kord)

    * Titans (Even though my first time reading about Deathstroke was in his solo book that tried to make this pedophile an anti-hero, I love him as a bad guy)

  21. Will.S says:

I’ll be picking up Brightest Day, Green Lantern, and Green Lantern Corps but I buy those GL books anyway.

I would have bought the Flash if it wasn’t all centered on Barry Allen and had more Wally so I don’t think I’ll be buying that book. I’m not really interested in Birds of Prey or another fucking of the ass of the Titans books.

  22. DidioForever says:

    I’m most excited for Flash#1

I got into DC proper (as in, not just Batman comics) around the time of Final Crisis (hence my username!), so as a newish reader I’m not pissed about the Barry/Wally thing like most people here are.

What I will say is that I’ve gone back and read most of GJ’s run on Wally-era Flash and I loved it; It’s just made me excited for GJ on Flash, period.

I know it’s tough seperating your personal history with a character from what you’d actually read the same title for…I’m trying to imagine what it would be like for me… Say if they’d kept Ben Reilly as Spiderman all these years only to put him on the sideline for a new Peter Parker relaunch?

But I do personally think that people like to apply way too much meaning to Barry’s death, when really it was THE first ‘event death’, the first of many to come, and probably about as necessary to storytelling as having Wasp getting blown up in Secret Invasion.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

I agree with you DidioForever about Barry’s death. Forgetting the fact that it’s a death in a comic where the same characters have been featured in stories for several decades(a death and resurrection has happened for more characters than not), if his death was that great, he would have saved all of the Earths that died during Crisis.

It’s also a good thing that everyone didn’t flee the Flash relaunch in the 80’s when Wally took over for Barry or those of you who refuse to buy the book due to the loss of Wally would have nothing to miss.

      • DidioForever says:

Exactly; Barry’s return was just a way of injecting new life into the FLASH comic, just as killing him off was supposed to be back then… At least now we’re allowed both!

As with GL, people will be buying Flash comics again, surely that’s a win-win for fans of the series? The more people who buy Flash#1 and onwards, the better chance Wally will have of getting his own title to run alongside it anyways.

        • Rob F says:

I guess my one problem with that is that DC tends to reuse the character names like Flash and Green Lantern…so if Wally would get his own book would he be called Flash or Kid Flash? I certainly don’t think he can be called Kid Flash again…

          • SMARTASS8 says:

I agree that it’s kind of lame that there are 3 Flashes & 1 Kid Flash running around the DCU and who knows how many Green Lanterns on Earth, but I still prefer that over killing off characters just so their replacement seems more important or ruining an established character with a new costume, name, or power ala Guy Gardner: Warrior.

            • cballsack says:

At least the Green Lanterns are part of a corps. The Flash thing is just ridiculous. There was no reason to bring back Barry. It’s such a gimmick. I blame Mark Waid and Geoff Johns for ruining Wally’s character. Yeah, their stories were fun, but they also made Wally too serious and boring. Marrying him off was a mistake.

              • SMARTASS8 says:

Bringing Barry back isn’t a gimmick since a lot of fans aren’t happy about it. He was brought back because Didio and Johns liked the character and wanted to see him used in the DCU again.

  23. generaldark says:

im mainly excited for the GL white light story line

  24. Matthew Guy says:

I will give Brightest Day 3 issues 0-2.
Flash #1 on a try a wait & see approach after Flash Late Birth.
The only series that has my money & interest is Birds of Prey vol. 2.
