One of the writers talks about him spontaneously adding the lines at a read-through. It’s the part about “all these moments will be lost in time, like…tears in rain.” I guess they liked it enough to keep it for the final movie. I highly recommend watching the Dangerous Days documentary they produced for the re-tweaked director’s cut they released a few years ago. Geek nirvana.
One of the greatest Sci-fi movie of all time, but which version do you perfect Jose, The Harrison Ford voice over or the latest director’s cut with no voice over?
So today I read the comic book adaptation of Shutter Island. I enjoyed it so much more than the movie. It actually went to the trouble of explaining things, unlike the film which left me scratching my head.
I also got started on the Scott Pilgrim series. Read the first book. Good stuff.
There’s a Shutter Island comic adaptation? I read the novel before I saw the film, so I knew everything going in, and was pretty pleased by how faithful it was. The only major difference was one line at the end which casts a new light on the Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis character. But I didn’t find it confusing at all.
Try to put yourself in the head who never read the novel. I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on in Shutter Island the movie, although I did figure out the “twist” ending pretty early on. But the movie never bothered to explain stuff like what the “law of 4” was. The graphic novel explained it pretty well. I remember when the movie ended, I turned to my date and said, “Wait, what the fuck was the law of 4???” I was pretty livid.
I’m curious about the novel. In the graphic novel, they didn’t have any flashbacks to Teddy’s service in Germany. Was that in the novel? I felt those scenes in the movie were so pointless and only served to confuse me more.
I did like Teddy’s last line to Chuck. That was better than the graphic novel’s. But that’s about the only nice thing I’ll say about the movie.
I saw the film without reading the novel and loved it. It was a nice break from most Hollywood-run flicks. I don’t think it’s important for everything to be explained to an audience. Sometimes, it’s up to us to figure stuff out.
The WW2 scenes were some of the best, I thought. It gave us more of a depth to what Teddy would do and to his code of morals.
I read the novel recently too and was pleased with how faithful it was.
Woo!Wha’re you retarded? The goddammed Batman is back in the muthafreakin’ house! But seriously,I’m somewhat willing to give him another chance.Even the Rolling Stones had their Emotional Rescue.I just hope Frank has an editor that’s not afraid to reign him in a bit. Neal Adams is a comics legend, but I’m not sure if today’s fans appreciate him.
Yeah, and She’s So Cold is kinda nifty too.But compared to Some Girls and Tattoo You ER was sorta meh.I will concede though,I haven’t listened to the whole album all the thru since the early 90’s. Mick’s solo stuff? Well, er,um…
I will check out Adams Odyssey, but I feel that ASBAR really sucked so bad that I don’t think Miller can make up for it, but I will give it a flip-thru.
Ummm…Morlock, that book isn’t going to start coming out until February 2011. I read that news yesterday and thought to myself “If it’s not coming out till next year WHY the hell even bother?”
I love the way ‘Rambo’ keeps finding RPG rockets lying around on the ground!
I am sort of partial to this version Superman, he just sort of walks around looking like he needs a nap, slapping the shit out of everyone who gets in his way.
So the other day I was going thru some Marvel Boxes I have, and I came across one of my all time favorite Hulk comics. The pinnacle of Epicness. I am talking about “Hulk: Future Imperfect”
I felt so good to look back at a piece of work where the artists spent hours drawing, putting their effort into the comic. And all those over-the-top lines fit in so well. I really have such love for that comic. Altho- I hated the replacement of the F word. They could of just censored it BUT I don’t wanna argue with what the writer wanted.
Ok so it’s not the greatest Hulk comic but it really is my favorite. A tough one to find these days but should you spot it, read it. Its fun 🙂
Best line from Banner/Hulk ( Somebody was complimenting Banner/Hulk on a job well done or whathavya by saying that he was Amazing ) Banner/Hulks’ response was: Sorry, Spidermans’ amazing, I’m Incredible……… Classic!!!
Greg Rucka Done with DC Comics, he will be leaving the company to focus more on his Queen and Country series, and the Batwoman solo series has been cancelled.
I feel really shitty over this news, Rucka was one of my favorite writers and i hope he doesn’t go over to the dark side. I really watned a Batwoman solo series.
Oh no way. That is horrible news, DC lost one of there best writters. I was looking forward to Batwoman so much this really sucks. Where did you hear this, I would love to read the article.
But at the cost of their best comic of the year? I have a feeling there is more to the story about Batwoman not getting her own book. This isn’t the first time DC has scrapped plans for it.
All too Marvel’s benefit, I think DC just has no idea on how to use their talent.
It’s like you got Bru early and under utilized him, Waid was desperate to write Supes no dice, wasted the Kuberts, let Jason Aaron slide right to Marvel and now Rucka is gone WTF! seriously.
good points dee a buddy of mine were baffled about the kubert dc exclusive we kept saying what exactly did they do at dc? how long were they there and how many issues did they put out?
The thing that kills me is that Williams III was to already be working on the new issues. I would like to know if there is any completed art for Batwoman that we will not see now.
No I didn’t I have only watched you guys for about 3 months, but I have gone back and i watched all the last rants I’m on around 2.13. Thanks for the info.
20th Century Boys is so fucking good. I wish American comics could come close to it’s epicness.I did a review on here for the first volume a few months ago. I am so happy that other people on here are reading it. Seriously.
I know man. Honestly, its important to me because I stumbled across it at my local Manga store. I was walking around and saw it and I thought the cover was cool, and I gave it a chance and can’t tell you how much I loved it. Certain comics have such value in my life, mainly cause they just were so epic that I’d cherish I have them in my life. Akira is the same way with me.
I agree that American comics aren’t anywhere near as close in terms of quality in story. Really. Its the most Remarkable comic I’ve read in a long time.
Sometimes American comics reach that level, but they usually end so quickly there’s not enough time to really enjoy it as much. Where as Japanese comics are so much longer, there’s more time to read it, enjoy it, praise it.
I think All-Star Superman is the only real USA comic to have that level of genuineness and substance with me.
I googled Remote Control to find some pics of Kari and found out the host, Ken Ober, died last year. That’s really sad. I genuinely loved that game show. They had the best quiz categories, like Inside Tina Yothers, in which you had to guess if the object mentioned could fit inside of Tina Yothers. Also, Beat The Bishop, in which you had to solve a math problem before a guy dressed in a bishop outfit finished running around the studio.
hey, what does any think of Matt Smith’s Doctor?
Oh yeah I saw Kick-Ass today, I thought it was an okay film, funny at times but I wouldn’t say best film, was just okay. Kinda mixed on Nicholas Cage but I thought the guy who played kick-ass was good.
Even though I’ve never been a big sci-fi guy(unless you consider Star Wars sci-fi), I’ve always been tempted to give Doctor Who a try since PBS used to air the Tom Baker episodes on the 80’s. I saw the first 3 episodes of the relaunch with Eccleston, liked it, but still haven’t gotten around to watching anymore. What is still a turn off to me is that even though there are so many diehard Who fans, unless you grew up in England in the 60’s, you’ll never be able to see all of the episodes.
Just finished watching Doctor Who. I have to say that I quite enjoyed it. Matt Smith played a decent Doctor and I am already quite fond of Amelia Pond. Karen Gillan has the makings of a great Companion…maybe the best? Only time will tell. This episode got me excited for the rest of the season.
Right now I’m watching the first episode of the 3rd series of Ashes to Ashes. Don’t know what to think about this yet.
Since I’m not real eager to risk viruses by illegally downloading TV shows, I often use SurfTheChannel and SideReel.com if a show isn’t on On Demand or a networks’s website.
fuckety, fuck, FUCK!
I hate this news. I was looking forward to the Batwoman series so much. DC needs to get their shit together. Rucka not staying on with them is nothing but bad for DC, they should know better.
At least Williams seems to still want to do something with Batwoman if they ever get around to it.
Thats gonna be a tough sale, I.M..I mean to this day I have difficulty saying “the Vagina Monologues” and thats a walk in the park compared to this. That said; Lions, really? Of all the species, lions?
I believe this movie was made by British filmmakers. It will be opening in the UK soon but I would be very surprised if this got a U.S. theatrical release.
The film is by Chris Morris of Brass Eye fame who is a satirical genius, one of his main points is that the media is more interested in engendering fear rather than establishing facts. One of the best ways to deal with evil is to find the humour in it
Yeah, I don’t think this will get wide release in the US. I will end up watching it on Netflix instant view movies.
It could be a good flick, I am pretty open minding and it is refreshing to see a movie that is willing to poke fun at extremists like this. I hope the director has his health insurance paid up =)
Noooooooo…fuck. I am very disheartened to hear that since I missed it. I will now have to look for this PPV through “other sources.” Ring of Honor is single handedly keeping the awesomeness of professional wrestling alive in the United States. Danielson better win that WWE NXT bullshit.
One of the few movies I still bother to keep around on DvD. Still kind of makes me mad that John Carpenter was never able to maintain his output of good movies after the 80’s.
I’ve never understood the love for Boba Fett(the Prequels killed what little interest I already had in him), but that looks pretty cool. I gave up on watching that show after watching the 3 episodes merged together for the theatrical release. I might have to give it another chance.
Any thoughts on Shawn Michaels retiring? Myself, I think its time and probably the Takers’ next Its time to cultivate the new, althogh this dufus that they have as champ is not a good start
And Happy Easter….just remember to avoid the brown eggs, they’re not chocalate 🙂
I’d raise my hand and agree with you but… I can’t seem to… also I haven’t been able to eat anything since all the food just seems to seep out into the plane around me, so I’ve been pretty weak and haven’t been able to think clearly for a while… so… I’ve… forgotten… the… question? huh?
So Robinson has two years worth of JLA stories ready to tell? And he’s going to introduce the Justice League of Africa? I’m going to go back to my longboxes and read my 80’s Justice League International issues now. Wake me up when there’s a new writer please.
I’m not sure who’s supposed to be representing whom; I just thought of this scene when I read your comment. I think Robinson is Pee Wee? Or maybe he’s the gang?
You don’t have to worry; I’m really not all that worked up about the creative stylings of Mr. Robinson. I don’t think I’m the first person to write a post here stating “So and So is a terrible fucking writer/artist/editor-in-chief”. Ask people on this blog what their opinion is of Brian Bendis, or Tony Daniels. Sometimes bloggers type in caps or put curse words in their statements. It doesn’t mean that they’re foaming at the mouth or are calling for a writer’s death.
I posted this on my Facebook but last week I bought a Transformer (Mudflap) just to see if I could transform him from a car to a robot and back to a car. It took me about 30 minutes but I was able to do it without breaking it. So, the moral of the story is challenge yourself, you may be surprised and take note Marvel do something different and it may be a success. I just had to work it back to Marvel…Sorry happy Easter
Anyone else find it dumb that Johns is telling the story of Maxwell Lord making the world forget who he is? Ughhhhh like are there any more good ideas ?
Even though I disagree with you about Johns, I really hope you talk about BN #8 in one of the next CCW episodes just so I can hear you rip into it. While I personally feel Marvel, JoeyQ, Brevoort, Alonso, Wacker, Bendis, Loeb, Millar, Way, Waid, David, Fraction, Hudlin, and Stan Lee(I’m just sick of that old coot putting his name on everything these days) can all “suck a fuck”, it’s nice to see new things get trashed. Marvel’s become a dead horse, imo.
Unfortunately E and I couldn’t tape new episodes this week BUT we will talk about Blackest Night next week.
Before Blackest Night came out we ripped into Johns in a couple of episodes and people were livid…which I found quite funny. I have a strong feeling that Johns will be taking a beating in our reviews this year UNLESS he gets his shit together. And,ya, I wasn’t a fan of Blackest Night #8…at all.
Johns is still probably my favorite writer working for the “Big 2”, but he’s far from perfect. I liked Blackest Night #8, but I was getting so bored with the series before it, I couldn’t wait for it to end. I also hated Flash Rebirth, what he did with Captain Boomerang Jr, his Ant-Man/Wasp sex scene during his Avengers run, his constant use of Saw like violence, all of the numerous deaths, and various other things I can’t think of off the top of my head. I have no problem with people hating Johns(or any comic talent for that matter). I do have a problem when that “hate” is based solely on company loyalty or what you read online(you need to actually read the book before deciding if the writer sucks). From the little time I’ve been reading your blog & watching your YouTube show, I know that’s not going to be the case with you or Elliott. You guys may hate things, but it’s based on insightful opinions and not sad attempts to be “cool” or “edgy”.
I am so glad that you see that we aren’t just ripping on thing for the sake of ripping on them Smartass. Just wish more of our viewers were as educated as you guys are here on the blog.
I have been reading almost everything Johns has written since his Avengers run. Trust me when I say I DON’T WANT him to go the Bendis route but I fear this may happen soon. With him now being Creative Director at DC I don’t see things getting better any time soon but I really hope I am wrong.
I really fucking hated it when Wonder Woman killed Lord, so I’m not that upset by it, even though bringing him back is kind of cheap. So I don’t mind retcons as long as they retcon an idea that I think sucked.
I love JLI, I love Max Lord, I wasn’t too fond of them turning him from a sleazy guy into an evil one, and I really didn’t like them killing him. Having said that, the worst thing about that was how Batman & Superman gave Diana the cold shoulder after she did that. Not only did she not have a choice without more innocents dying, didn’t Superman already kill Doomsday and Zod before? Granted, that may have been retconned out of continuity due to Infinite Crisis, I still feel Bruce & Clark would have at least realized Diana didn’t really have a choice.
Wonder Woman is my favorite character of the three because she’s the most complex; also I appreciate the political and social challenges her character has had to deal with that Superman and Batman haven’t. But her complexity and difficulty to define character work against her in the marketplace (most comic readers can easily sum up Sups and Bats and that is one reason why they are more popular–along with possible fanboy sexism).
I don’t hate Batman, but I love it how Marvel Zombies say that they hate the DCU except for Batman since he’s gritty & has a realistic personality like all of the Marvel characters. Not only do I find Wonder Woman & Superman to have more to their personalities than Batman(more so with Wonder Woman), but I find Bruce Wayne to be a stagnant character who is about as rounded as a Rubik’s Cube. He’s all attitude these days. Even after they tried to make him a little lighter after Infinite Crisis, it wasn’t long before they went back to his usual “meh” dialogue.
My favorite version of Batman is definately Denny O’Neil’s in the 70’s in stories like “There’s No Hope in Crime Ally”. Tough, justice-seeking, but compassionate and not too busy to walk an old man home after stopping him from being mugged. There seems to be continued tendency to write Batman as an arrogant asshole and call it character development, unfortunately.
Agreed. Batman should be dark & menacing with criminals but he doesn’t need to act that way with the Justice League(although I still love the “one punch” scene in Giffen’s Justice League).
Yeah, I don’t understand people who hate that WW killed Max Lord. Anyone with a base knowledge of mythology, Greek and Turkish mythology knows Amazons ain’t to be fucked with.
It’s not that she killed someone that bothered me, exactly—although it contradicts with Rucka’s depiction of her as a diplomat— it’s the impulsiveness of the decision that I couldn’t stand. When she faced Medusa a few issues earlier, now that was a situation where she had no choice but to take a life.
Even though I hate that Marvel(thanks in large part to Bendis) has turned most of their heroes into anti-heroes who have as little problem killing as Wolverine, I don’t have a problem with heroes taking a life if the storyline calls for it. Wonder Woman grew up a warrior so what she did to Max made sense. I just didn’t like it since I liked Max Lord(at least Giffen’s Max Lord). While the “Rise & Fall” storyline has been forced and unnecessary, I can get behind Green Arrow killing after what happened. I’m more concerned with the talk from Krul that he’s going to make the new Green Arrow series closer to what Grell did in the 80’s. I liked that book as a kid, but I really don’t want to see Green Arrow go back to being a gritty, “realistic”, urban vigilante(especially in that costume obviously designed after the “Smallville” look).
Ya’know to be honest I look forward to a harder edge Green Arrow. I’ve never understood any superhero who carries a weapon like the bow and arrow and not kill, it is a weapon out of all other weapons that is meant for complete fatality.
Plus it’ll seperate him from Hawkeye who is in the same vein as Ollie, The bow is a hunting weapon I’d rather a character who uses it to it’s fullest expression. Instead of boxing gloves.
Actually, now it will make Ollie just like Clint since the guy who once left his wife after she let her rapist fall to his death is now a ninja killing machine thanks to BM Bendis. (big-ass eye roll)
I just don’t find an uber-liberal like Ollie to be a good fit for the role of a dark & grim vigilante who deals justice with death.
Y’know the whole Cry for Justice bs make me realize that I can’t stand Green Arrow. Not just with Robinson, but I couldn’t stand him with his holier-than-thou attitude towards Green Lantern in the late 60’s as well. I can’t think of a major silver age JLA member that I think is more boring (although I’ll be honest; I never read Grell’s stories, so maybe I’d have a different opinion if I read them).
Oh, I totally agree. One of the reasons I didn’t like her snapping his neck was that it was centered around the Infinite Crisis bullshit. Most Wonder Woman fans have never forgiven Geoff Johns for the way he portrayed Diana in that shitfest; with her “Oh, it’s time to find out who Diana is” whining. The whole thing smelled like editorial mandate. Plus, it doesn’t make any sense in the context of the story. The JLA already knew that Zantanna has been mindwiping villians up to this point; why not knock Lord out and fly him up to the satellite to see if the Z or Dr. Fate can erase his memory of his power, which would have been better than killing him. Even if that didn’t work and the JLA needed to kill him, at least it would have been a group decision that could have been justified to the public. If Wonder Woman is willing to kill here, how has she avoided killing Ares or Circe or Cheetah in previous “seemingly hopless” situations? Surely Cheetah is more of a monster than Max Lord was, or has killed as many people over the years. But the worst thing about it was that it fucked up Wonder Woman’s character; undoing the good ideas that Rucka contributed to the book and making her a harder character for Gail to write. You could visualize Gail struggling between the amazon warrior who’s willing to “Jack Bauer” Cheetah by threatening to cut her tail and the peacemaker who is willing to save the life of her future reanimated corpse.
What ideas in recent comics do you consider original and/or creative? A lot of great comics have come from ideas or cliches that weren’t exactly innovative. Take Batman for instance.
I thought Peter Parker getting bit by a radioactive spider thus gaining the powers of a spider was kinda original… but that wasn’t that recent though, was it?
Stan Lee stole that from “The Fly”. Not really, but you can pretty much tie anything considered “new” and “original” to something that came before. I’ve even heard athiests say that there are alot of stories similar to Jesus’ that are a part of other religions/cultures.
30 Days of night by steven Niles was pretty unique or rather an idea that seemed so obvisous, I’m suprised no one thought of the idea of using real places in the world (Alaska) that go long periods without sunlight.
There are a lot of original ideas in comics, unfortunately they are not in the main stream Marvel or DC books. There are plenty of great original ideas in Vertigo, Boom, Image, Wildstorm, and even Icon books.
Unwritten comes to mind as a book that is unlike any other.
Originality in any creative field is something hard to judge, ’cause it seems that everyone has their personal definition of it (well, everything is like that, but in this case the overlapping areas are often too small to be considered ‘the same meaning’).
Myself, I consider that originality comes in how you tell your story (i.e. how you combine your elements, even if they have each been beaten to death). Imo the idea that some have of some sort of ‘complete’ originality is delusional. We create stories based on our personal experiences, our parameters to judge if what we are making is good are similar works we have experienced and things we already did, so it is bound to display traits of things that have came before.
Has anyone here ever checked out the book Locke and Key? If not its definitely worth checking out. It’s by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son) with art by Gabriel Rodriguez . The first two stories, Welcome to Lovecraft and Head Games, are out right now in trade and the third story, Crown of Shadows, is finishing up in issues right now. It is definitely one of the more original books out there at the moment, so check it out!
I think I’m going to read this. They have the first trade in hardcover at my local library. I’ve been hearing Blair Butler rave about it for a while now in her Fresh Ink segments over at her G4 blog.
Gcnurko1, you shouldn’t let one instance of someone thinking that having an opinion is an excuse for being a dick turn you away from the conversation. Do what I do and respond with a fart joke! Which reminds me I have to go make a fart joke! Anyways, hope you have a good day.
I’m assuming the dick you’re referring to is in reference to me. This is a blog where people have opinions and get passionate about them. But I don’t remember calling anybody on this blog names (like “dick” for example). Unless you’re related to James Robinson; then I humbly apologize for calling one of your family members a bad writer (See sarcasm is allowed, as long as you’re not calling names). Where you this upset when Jose and Smartass were getting “worked up” about Oprah on a previous thread?
I couldn’t care less what you say about Robinson’s writing or what someone else says about Oprah’s back tattoo. (It’s a lovely vista of a Kruger’s cereal isle by the way). I was simply referring to how you choose to relate with someone else on the blog while stating your opinion when they pointed out a certain amount of vitriol. I interpreted your response as particularly dickish, sue me. I’m not trying to split hairs but I did say “being a dick.” I didn’t mean to imply that you are a “dick” here and for all time. On a related note, if it makes you feel any better a lot of my very own family members are “dicks” AND bad writers.
It was a sarcastic response to someone’s sarcastic reponse to a sarcastic comment I made about a comic book writer. Again, I don’t think I said anything that was anymore out of line than what usually goes on here. If I’m really overdoing it, I’m sure Jose or Elliott will let me know. Unless you’re volunteering to police everyone’s comments for being sarcastic. Or you could…I don’t know…allow people to fight their own battles and defend themselves.
I should say instead of “I couldn’t care less what you…”, that your specific opinions on any matters don’t offend me, etc. In fact your opinions are always well thought out. Again I was just talking about interpersonal discourse.
You know, I typed the above response before I read your last post, and I think I got a better understanding of where you’re coming from. Sorry for the snark on the above comment.
You did make a good point about allowing others to fight their own battles. I just felt like giving my two cents mainly cause I’m trying to avoid getting any real work done today.
Oh, and I apologize for the “dick” comment. I should have found a better way to write what I was trying to get across.
But I will not apologize for the d-i-c-k,… you ladies know what I’m talking about! Am I right?!… Ladies?… Hello? … Ladies?…… I’m gonna go eat some more ex-lax.
What is with all the “gay” talk(not that there’s anything wrong with it). First Jose talks about Bendis teasing us with unfinished handjobs and now you guys are talking about dicks. Is this blog being sponsored by Out Magazine? 8)
Are you kidding? My two little comments about the merits of Robinson’s writing are going to chase you away? You’re the one who started in with the venom and the snakebite stuff. You could have just told me you disagree and stated why. This is a far more civilized board than CBR or anything you’re liable to find on the internet. But if you take a shot at someone here, they’re probably going to respond.
Alright everyone, let’s all chillax. Man, I can’t leave you guys alone for half a day. 😛
That was sarcasm by the by. You know Morlock and AvS, if you want someone to blame please blame me. I saw that Robinson link post and I didn’t really do anything about it. I KNEW that someone on here was going to make a joke about it (it could very well have been me doing the joking had I been drinking at the time). Seeing how that guy was a new poster I should have at least given him a warning about posting Robinson stuff. So, my fault.
Hope this doesn’t turn either of you guys (AvS and Morlock) off of posting on the blog. I do enjoy both of your comments very much and you guys add much needed humor and insight on here.
Please go a little easier on the new posters in the future. I don’t really think they know what they are getting into when they post on here. 🙂
I’m looking forward to seeing what Matt Fraction does with Thor: http://littlekingryan.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/11649storystory_full-8419944.jpg. I just read the one-shots he did with Zircher and others (Ages of Thunder, Reign of Blood, Man of War and the God-Size Special, respectively) and I really enjoyed them. Not perfect, but quite good. I liked JMS’ stuff, not so much with Gillen. Definitely looking forward to #611. Pasqual Ferry art doesn’t hurt, either…
I was going to give a try too. I’ve never been a Thor reader but Fraction brought me into Iron Man never having been an Iron Man reader so… I’m hoping it’ll happen again and proud of myself for not (explicitly) making a lightning pun.
Same here. I never read Iron Man before him and I never read Thor before JMS, but I picked it up because of Coipel. I still think the bastardized Norse mythology can sometimes be an odd fit with the rest of the Marvel U, but when it’s kind of put in it’s own bubble or shot through with Shakespearan-type intrigue, it works pretty well. Fraction seemed to embrace the classical roots a bit more in the stuff he’s written so far. I was going to write a lightning pun here, but it’s just too far to go with so little reward.
I also love what Fraction had to say about his collaborator: “If you’ve seen Pasqual’s work, you know what he brings. He eats the cosmic for breakfast and has mind-bending for brunch. Then he skips lunch because he ate breakfast and brunch, and then for dinner, he feasts like a Kosmic Kirby King on Kraziness like he’s got a bad case of Space Bulimia. If I had to choose one guy to draw something bigger than gods, it’d be the big PF, baby.”
Alliteration! Sounds like he’s been reading old Stan Lee…
Very good, sir.
I want my tombstone to have a fantastic lie which makes me seem selfless, worldly, and somehow heroic at the same time. Like Royal Tennenbaum.
“Died while saving his entire family from sharks.”
Raiders is certainly the superior film, but RoboCop is also very fun to watch. Demolition Man, I’m not as hot on. Depends on the kind of mood you’re in.
As a kid, I always used to love the opening scene in Robocop where they execute poor Murphy. So brutal. I think the best line of the series is in part two, however, when they manage to kidnap Robo and the evil drug dealer kid says, “They say he has a brain. I want to see it.” Love that.
My vote goes to Robocop. Comes with extra-sleazy Miguel Ferrer, and the ultra-violent cheese factor of Verhoeven.
Man littleking I didn’t read this before I put raiders in, but you made such a good case for RoboCop I will just have to have a double header tonight. Raiders->RoboCop.
Although I think Raiders is a better film, Temple of Doom is my favorite. Some may call that blasphemy, but I think it moves a little quicker and goes places PG movies don’t go anymore. Tearing out hearts while lowering slaves into a pit of molten lava? Check. I heard the MPAA invented the PG-13 rating for TOD at Spielberg’s behest.
When I was a kid I only watched Temple of Doom, I don’t know why I think it was on cable more, so it holds a special place in my heart. That being said Raiders is my favorite.
I like Temple Of Doom the best as well. It was non-stop action and, considering I usually hate child actors, I even liked Shortround. The future Mrs. Spielberg was also hotter than Karen Allen. I always go Temple > Raiders > Crusade > Skull.
Supposedly it was a mix between Temple & Gremlins that the PG-13 rating came to be. If anythings makes the 70’s & 80’s great is that you had topless chicks and guys ripping hearts out of people in PG movies. Hell, even the early PG-13 movies had some nudity(I think Titanic was the last one). They put more adult things in old school PG movies than they do in modern day PG-13 movies. Damn liberals(or is the religious right to blame for this?)!!!
Although I’m not seeing the pun I am penitent. I swear I was just going for a words of wisdom vibe referring to your win in the great Robocop debates of two-thousand-lickety-naught.
Really? lkr gave such a stirring argument for Robocop I want to watch it right now. Plus I think that Robocop speech got him on the ballot in 49 US states; sorry Tennessee.
J.
One of the most classic quotes ever. This one scene is really my favorite in the entire movie.
Mine too. Interesting to note that Hauer ad-libbed part of that speech. Brilliant.
ad libbed i didnt know that good for him
i met him at a con he was super cool i had no idea what big guy he was
his hands where meat hooks
One of the writers talks about him spontaneously adding the lines at a read-through. It’s the part about “all these moments will be lost in time, like…tears in rain.” I guess they liked it enough to keep it for the final movie. I highly recommend watching the Dangerous Days documentary they produced for the re-tweaked director’s cut they released a few years ago. Geek nirvana.
It’s a poem
One of the greatest Sci-fi movie of all time, but which version do you perfect Jose, The Harrison Ford voice over or the latest director’s cut with no voice over?
No voice over. I hate the voice over. I fucking hate it. 🙂
J.
I wanna start the weekend of with some BANG BANG BANG BANG!!!!
The most disturbing song I ever loved except for One by Metallica
Would this be even more 🙂
She shouldn’t have a problem getting through the airport.
Our a buffet line, BA-ZING! LOL 😛
I read the novel recently too and was pleased with how faithful it was.
my new favorite superhero and possibly the greatest of all time
All I can say is
KILL EACH OTHER. KILL EACH OTHER.
i know isnt that awesome and completely non superhero
btw check you tube for more clips and i think the whole movie might up there
Kill each other!
Lol
Heh..now I’ve gotta find this movie
Coolest hero ever!
Best part is at around the two minute mark, Argoman hops over a low stone wall when the entrance is only a few feet away.
IM
I saw Shutter Island, and I was thinking about Memento. There is no resemblance from the story but the ending has the same effect
So, what does everybody think about the new Batman news:
1) Jim Lee and Frank Miller are completing the ASBAR storyline in 6 issues entitled Dark Knight: Boy Wonder. Starts in July for 6 issues.
2) Neal Adams is writing, drawing, and inking a 12 issue mini called Batman: Odyssey.
1) Unless it has more gorgeous pics of WonderWoman, I can’t wait to miss it!
2)Neal’s a modern master, but at times he can be a bit of a space cadet. So I’m gonna have to wait and see on this one.
Not reading it, been burned by the book.
Batman: Odyssey is a go
Woo!Wha’re you retarded? The goddammed Batman is back in the muthafreakin’ house! But seriously,I’m somewhat willing to give him another chance.Even the Rolling Stones had their Emotional Rescue.I just hope Frank has an editor that’s not afraid to reign him in a bit. Neal Adams is a comics legend, but I’m not sure if today’s fans appreciate him.
Yeah I know what you…. hey wait a minute, whats wrong with Emotional Rescue? That song was jammin’! Go after Mick’s solo stuff 🙂
Yeah, and She’s So Cold is kinda nifty too.But compared to Some Girls and Tattoo You ER was sorta meh.I will concede though,I haven’t listened to the whole album all the thru since the early 90’s. Mick’s solo stuff? Well, er,um…
In the same vein as ER, a song using Micks’ falsetto to the max, c’mon Ed you’re not gonna rain on my parade on this one to , are you 😦
Whoa! Don’t get the wrong idea!I love the Stones! This album is a classic and Miss You always puts me good mood!!
J.
Thanks for posting that. I remember seeing this a while ago but totally forgot about it.
Molto bello!
Spider!
that is nothing but awesome
J.
LMAO Oh man that is hilarious, and how the fuck does he refill that rocket launcher so many times?
The plunger sound effect makes this.
Think I’ve found a new character for CCW RAMPAGE!
Turkey makes some of the best knockoffs! =)
I love the way ‘Rambo’ keeps finding RPG rockets lying around on the ground!
I am sort of partial to this version Superman, he just sort of walks around looking like he needs a nap, slapping the shit out of everyone who gets in his way.
I’m gonna netflix any and everything from Turkey from now on lol
That might put you on a US government watchlist; either one that marks you as a potential terrorist or just a movie watcher with bad taste. LOL!!!
Looks better than “Brand New Day”!
Its fun 🙂
I also have this book, it is fun. Old school Peter David.
Right there with ya’ bud
Although I’m partial too Doc Banner Hulk
Best line from Banner/Hulk ( Somebody was complimenting Banner/Hulk on a job well done or whathavya by saying that he was Amazing ) Banner/Hulks’ response was: Sorry, Spidermans’ amazing, I’m Incredible……… Classic!!!
Haha. The entire book has great lines. My favorite was “Gentlemen, you’ll be pleased to know, the doctor is in.”
ha IDK I know its cheesy but sometimes cheese is good 🙂
Greg Rucka Done with DC Comics, he will be leaving the company to focus more on his Queen and Country series, and the Batwoman solo series has been cancelled.
Where did you hear this, I would love to read the article.
http://blog.newsarama.com/2010/04/02/greg-rucka-done-with-batwoman-and-dc/
thanks
I guess he got fed up of writing shitty Nightwing and Flamebird trash.
any chance its an april fool’s joke?
WTF?
That can’t be right
April Fools right…say it..say it!
That’s what i thought too, but alas, it such bad news that it is true.
Wow, another one bites the dust. That sucks.
Oh for fucks sake…
J.
How could DC screw the pooch on this one, maybe it’s the thing about bringing new blood too DC.
But at the cost of their best comic of the year? I have a feeling there is more to the story about Batwoman not getting her own book. This isn’t the first time DC has scrapped plans for it.
J.
If DC pulls a Marvel you may yet get a Batwoman Comic but things could go so wrong!
Hey it’s happened before, DC let Brubaker, Wacker, Dixon and Waid go without a thought.
I doubt it has anything too do with Batwoman’s sexuality, I hope not.
Imho, Wacker and Waid were good calls. Dixon and Brubaker are hit & miss.
All too Marvel’s benefit, I think DC just has no idea on how to use their talent.
It’s like you got Bru early and under utilized him, Waid was desperate to write Supes no dice, wasted the Kuberts, let Jason Aaron slide right to Marvel and now Rucka is gone WTF! seriously.
I hope Geoff can correct this shit.
good points dee a buddy of mine were baffled about the kubert dc exclusive we kept saying what exactly did they do at dc? how long were they there and how many issues did they put out?
The thing that kills me is that Williams III was to already be working on the new issues. I would like to know if there is any completed art for Batwoman that we will not see now.
J.
Wait is this effective immediately Rucka is gone or maybe they’ll finish up their run.
They are not going to finish the run. He talked about it at his panel at Wondercon. I just put a link to it at the bottom of this page.
J.
It sounds like Rucka wants to work on his own Stuff, He said him and JH are working on something Bladerunner-like.
DC should throw a few smackers at Rucka. They can’t afford to lose Batwoman.
dc will be fine without it one thing the big 2 prove time and time again comic book life goes on no matter what books or characters go by the wayside
any one notice spawn 196 finally came out 4 months late, hopefully todd was telling the truth when he said hed do double shipping soon
Man, I haven’t read Spawn since 96′
I stopped reading at issue 20 myself.
J.
Be thankful you did
Oh get with E sent you something heh
hey spawns better than most marvels stuff at the moment, though is that saying much
It’s like saying feces with peanuts is better than fecal without the nutty goodness, it’s all shit.
I just started Naoki Urasawa’s Monster, and this shit is off the chain. I am lovin it.
It is awesome, isn’t it?
J.
It’s great, it provokes a lot of different emotions, and keeps me wanting more. This is what I want when I’m reading.
Did you see our review of the first volume?
J.
No I didn’t I have only watched you guys for about 3 months, but I have gone back and i watched all the last rants I’m on around 2.13. Thanks for the info.
watched it, great review.
I love anything by Naoki Urasawa. 20th Century Boys is a good comic too.
20th Century Boys is so fucking good. I wish American comics could come close to it’s epicness.I did a review on here for the first volume a few months ago. I am so happy that other people on here are reading it. Seriously.
J.
Did you see the live action movie? any good?
Sometimes American comics reach that level, but they usually end so quickly there’s not enough time to really enjoy it as much. Where as Japanese comics are so much longer, there’s more time to read it, enjoy it, praise it.
I think All-Star Superman is the only real USA comic to have that level of genuineness and substance with me.
Haven’t seen the movies yet but I plan to.
J.
Anyone up for old school Weird Al?
Doesn’t he have a rap album out also? I’ma have too look that up
J.
I miss the old MTV, the Head, the MAXX, Aeon Flux all this stuff.
Now we get Snooki yay us
Don’t forget Remote Control. Love that Kari Wuhrer.
Oh man, Kari Wuhrer…she was on Silders for a bit, right? Crush…
J.
Also, as far as women who I had a crush on from the MTV days nobody ranks higher than Diane Farr from Loveline. Damn…
J.
Wow…that is kinda depressing. I do have very fond memories of that show though. Spent many hours with it while growing up.
J.
hey, what does any think of Matt Smith’s Doctor?
Oh yeah I saw Kick-Ass today, I thought it was an okay film, funny at times but I wouldn’t say best film, was just okay. Kinda mixed on Nicholas Cage but I thought the guy who played kick-ass was good.
I’ll let you know when I watch Doctor Who later tonight.
J.
What is still a turn off to me is that even though there are so many diehard Who fans, unless you grew up in England in the 60’s, you’ll never be able to see all of the episodes.
you don’t seee the black and white ones but from Pertwee you can see most of them.
J.
awww yeah that was good, the last bit had me intrigued like what with the new fella knowing something about Gene Hunt… ooooooo
Despite Matt Smith looking like Patrick Troughton, I felt he was like Jon Pertwees doctor in a way.
surfthechannel.com
best way to watch every episode.
but the older ones while good are nothing compared to the new series’
Since I’m not real eager to risk viruses by illegally downloading TV shows, I often use SurfTheChannel and SideReel.com if a show isn’t on On Demand or a networks’s website.
If anyone here lives in the Chicagoland area and wants to meet up with E and I for some drinks this is where we’ll be from 6 to 9 tonight.
http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/redeye-events/2010/03/get-your-name-on-chicago-theatres-marquee-and-party-with-us.html
J.
If I had a warp drive I’d be there, but have fun fellas
I wish I had know a head of time, I would have scheduled some time off and took a train to Chicago =)
But I have to warn you, once I get a few drinks in me I am no longer the quite, reserved person I normally am on the CCW boards =)
IM
Dude, you think I’m out of control on our vids just wait till I get a couple of drinks in me. That’s when the gloves come off.
J.
As long as you’re not a sobbing drunk. I hate those.
Oh. I do too. Those are the worst. I once dated a girl who was a sobbing drunk. Didn’t last very long.
J.
yeah i just imagines you with a sobbing drunk… quite close to the real thing i reckon lool
Here’s a really great piece on the Greg Rucka panel from Wondercon. Very interesting stuff.

J.
JH Williams III blog post talking about the news:
http://www.jhwilliams3.com/archives/245
fuckety, fuck, FUCK!
I hate this news. I was looking forward to the Batwoman series so much. DC needs to get their shit together. Rucka not staying on with them is nothing but bad for DC, they should know better.
At least Williams seems to still want to do something with Batwoman if they ever get around to it.
*sigh*
Too soon? or will it ever be cool to make a comedy about something like this?
Chaplin approves.
HA!
Thats gonna be a tough sale, I.M..I mean to this day I have difficulty saying “the Vagina Monologues” and thats a walk in the park compared to this. That said; Lions, really? Of all the species, lions?
I would imagine “lion” is being used ironically.
LOL. When the hell is this coming out?
Interesting trailer. I wonder how many American theaters will show this.
I believe this movie was made by British filmmakers. It will be opening in the UK soon but I would be very surprised if this got a U.S. theatrical release.
J.
Four Lions is a play on words, Three Lions is a famous football song/chant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEb0X9NEX0I&feature=related
The film is by Chris Morris of Brass Eye fame who is a satirical genius, one of his main points is that the media is more interested in engendering fear rather than establishing facts. One of the best ways to deal with evil is to find the humour in it
I saw this trailer about a month ago and am very interested in seeing the movie.
J.
Can’t say I can find it amusing personally, but hey who knows could be the Hurtlocker meets Hot Fuzz movie of the year.
Yeah, I don’t think this will get wide release in the US. I will end up watching it on Netflix instant view movies.
It could be a good flick, I am pretty open minding and it is refreshing to see a movie that is willing to poke fun at extremists like this. I hope the director has his health insurance paid up =)
IM
Anyone watching the ROH iPPV The Big Bang tonight?
If not, you really should. Its been a great show thus far, and had quite the surprise that I don’t really want to spoil for anybody
Ah, fuck. That was tonight? I just got back from going to one of Elliott’s blog “get togethers.” Which was kinda shit btw. 😛
I would have much rather have stayed home with some beer and Ring of Honor goodness. Sigh…damn it…
J.
Haha sorry you had to miss it man, it was really good.
Three really outstanding matches and no sound issues like their was with Final Battle
Noooooooo…fuck. I am very disheartened to hear that since I missed it. I will now have to look for this PPV through “other sources.” Ring of Honor is single handedly keeping the awesomeness of professional wrestling alive in the United States. Danielson better win that WWE NXT bullshit.
J.
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/04/02/a-very-good-friday-runaround-indeed/
I seriously want this image on a shirt, it is fucking awesome.
Ah man! that was awesome. Kurt Russell in Big Trouble in Little China is win.
🙂
J.
Long live John Carpenter.
One of the few movies I still bother to keep around on DvD. Still kind of makes me mad that John Carpenter was never able to maintain his output of good movies after the 80’s.
I’ve seen Big Trouble In Little China several times, but never in one sitting. I don’t think I’ve seen it from beginning to end.
I love that movie!!!
That is a cool shirt. It took me a few seconds to recognize that one dude as MacGyver.
I thought it was Dalton from Roadhouse.
Freaking fucking awesome!
Boba Fett will be the main Bad guy for the season finale of Star Wars the Clone Wars.
Here’s the Trailer. (i must say, looks awesome!)
http://www.comicvine.com/news/amazing-star-wars-the-clone-wars-season-2-finale-trailer/140800/
Other than Darth Vader and Chewie, the name Boba Fett was the only thing I liked about Star Wars
I’ve never understood the love for Boba Fett(the Prequels killed what little interest I already had in him), but that looks pretty cool. I gave up on watching that show after watching the 3 episodes merged together for the theatrical release. I might have to give it another chance.
Happy easter, y’all.
Happy Easter to all, and to all a good night!
Guys, we know this all to well, if there’s one thing women aren’t good at, I present:
That is hilarious.
I would laugh, but my wife is sitting right here next to me =D
IM
Not sitting with you in a car.I hope! 🙂
This is great…but watch it with no sound, or you may punch your computer screen.
Haha… that was great!
J.
I know what I’ll be doing at midnight September 10th. 3D no less, I’m pumped.
Though, I’m extremely sad to see that the love of my life Oded Fehr doesn’t appear to be in it.
My wife loves Resident Evil, but hates 3-D =)
OMG am i alone when i say FUCK 3D???
idk I think its good for some movies, defiantly not all though. Resident Evil sounds like a movie that might look pretty cool in 3D.
Agreed Stamps, it will work for some movies, but some just don’t seem to fit, like the new Robin Hood is going to be in 3-D.
I’d raise my hand and agree with you but… I can’t seem to… also I haven’t been able to eat anything since all the food just seems to seep out into the plane around me, so I’ve been pretty weak and haven’t been able to think clearly for a while… so… I’ve… forgotten… the… question? huh?
Hey Dark, you know a lady named 3D also? Is she from Flint? If so, I agree with ya 🙂
i dont get it phil but if there is a girl named that then i dont like her either >:P
wait…. maby i get it now…..
hey all star batman and robin is getting canceled, J, E could yo u do a vid about that?
I don’t think it’s getting cancelled, I think it’s finishing next year.
It’s being renamed Dark Knight: Boy Wonder and will finish 2011.
I think I’m goning to cry 😦
http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles/Greg_Rucka_is_finished_with_Batwoman____and_DC_-_UPDATED
Hey in another 6 minutes its…make that 5 minutes, its Monday…. well, in Michigan anyway.
Man, I’m bored and make that 4 minutes
One of my favorite CBR articles, I thought I would share with you over here. http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=21406
I really liked this article, too. Thanks for the link, M.
James Robinson Wonder Con Panel article
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=25567
So Robinson has two years worth of JLA stories ready to tell? And he’s going to introduce the Justice League of Africa? I’m going to go back to my longboxes and read my 80’s Justice League International issues now. Wake me up when there’s a new writer please.
Wow….
Anymore venom in these responses and I’ll need a snake bite kit and a doctor.
I’m not sure who’s supposed to be representing whom; I just thought of this scene when I read your comment. I think Robinson is Pee Wee? Or maybe he’s the gang?
Sorry, I’ll try to tone down the venom…..
JAMES ROBINSON IS THE WORST FUCKING WRITER AT DC!!!!!!!!!
How’s that? Little more gentle?
Yup, just one man’s opinion. That’s all it is.
So then you should definitely get more worked up about it.
God that so depressing. 2 more years of this shit, urg!!!
Original, creative ones?
This year could mark the beginning of Geoff Johns creative downfall. He IS the next Bendis, Loeb and Millar.
J.
Really didn’t like Blackest Night did ya? LOL!
J.
J.
Dude I don’t think that’s gonna happen, Johns doesn’t strike me as the ego driven type. Unlike Bendis or Loeb etc..
agreed
Jose called it! We’ll see if you’re right this time in 2011 🙂
I’m still digging his Secret Origins. The man can go back to doing Action Comics with Gary Frank anytime he wants. But his Flash:Rebirth was weak.
Superman and Batman are the biggest hypocrites in comics and that’s why Wonder Woman will always be the better character. 😛
J.
Bruce Timm’s Batman is best.
I wholly agree with ya on that! Imo the World’s Finest should be called the World’s Dickiest. And I bet someone would buy that, sadly.
It was manufactured conflict for the trinity and a way of making WW interesting. Didn’t work
Although I do think of the three WW would be the one too take a life to save many, she is a amazon.
That’s why it didn’t bother me at all when she did.
J.
Maybe they’ll turn Lord into a Rod Blagojevich…
J.
Stan Lee stole that from “The Fly”. Not really, but you can pretty much tie anything considered “new” and “original” to something that came before. I’ve even heard athiests say that there are alot of stories similar to Jesus’ that are a part of other religions/cultures.
Good point.

Is that what that scene in BN #8 was? I totally didn’t get it, but I’m sorely lacking in DC knowledge.
Did anyone read The Sword #23? loved it
I did and I DID TOO. Only one more issue left. 😦

Sad to say I dropped the book
This book is great, I collect the trades, you have never seen suspense drawn this good…..ever.
last time i’m coming to this blog…
Sure, I’ll volunteer to police comments for sarcasm.
This comment has been flagged for sarcasm!
Hold the phone… Oprah has a back tatoo?!!?
Yeah, that kinda made me pause too.
Yes, a lovely vista of Mount Rushmore. You heard it here first!
I know the feeling.
You sir are too savvy for the guerrilla marketing:
J.
I think I can this chillax you speak of… Is it anything like this?:
Cause if it is, I’m all over it.
Yes, it is EXACTLY like that. Make sure you bring enough for everyone.
J.
I feel more relaxed already. It’s like magic!
Be sure to keep the plastic on the couch for at least a week after that elixir!
Last time I come to this blog. Until the next time. Which should be in about an hour.
so true
haha
Now I’m feeling guilty for chasing the new guy off. Come back, gcnurko1! It’s okay if you like Robinson.
Ya come on Morlock, Starman was good…….10 years ago.
I think that WAS James Robinson.
J.
Ha!
If I were Pasqual I’d petition to get that quote chiseled on my tombstone!
But then again I plan on using very small font on my tombstone.
Very good, sir.
I want my tombstone to have a fantastic lie which makes me seem selfless, worldly, and somehow heroic at the same time. Like Royal Tennenbaum.
“Died while saving his entire family from sharks.”
I’m going to just put this here for safe keeping.
hey look Starburns is one of the casting guys
Yeah. Dino Stamatopoulos, he was a writer on Mr. Show.
He did Moral Oral too, right?
J.
I think so but I’ve never seen it. Adult swim right?
Man, I can’t decide what movie to watch it’s between Raiders of the Lost Ark, RoboCop, or Demolition Man. Anybody have any input?
This is what I’m saying.
I’m glad I could help. I think. Enjoy the bad stop-motion robot in the boardroom scene.
Oh I will, but right now I to get past the hot college student that wants Dr. Jones and has LOVE YOU wrote on her eyes.
That being said Raiders is my favorite.
nostalgia has colored my judgement
The wise man assumes the throne reluctantly.
Congratulations, you have succumbed to the temptation to pun.
Although I’m not seeing the pun I am penitent. I swear I was just going for a words of wisdom vibe referring to your win in the great Robocop debates of two-thousand-lickety-naught.
LittleKing…throne…seems I’m the guilty one now.
Ah, but it’s my fault either way. I will PUNish myself by PUNching my favorite acuPUNcturist.
Sorry in advance.
Raiders.
Raiders it is.
Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes.
Really? lkr gave such a stirring argument for Robocop I want to watch it right now. Plus I think that Robocop speech got him on the ballot in 49 US states; sorry Tennessee.
He has my vote
Ok, Raiders is done time for some RoboCop.
