The New Universe was not so hot,but here’s something cool from the 80’s Now lemme tell ya ’bout when we had these things called cassette tapes…

    • Venom829 says:

I was little boy when we had those things 🙂

    • AvS says:

      Caaassseeete… taaaaapes?

    • IronMuskrat says:

Man back in the day, making a good mixed tape could make or break your popularity in school. It was an art form to get just the right songs and put them on tape in one piece without it sounding like shit.

Oh, and that chick from Bow Wow Wow was hot as hell back in the 80’s, I remember there was a big stink however when people found out she was only like 15 or 16.

      IM

      • Locusmortis says:

yes and she was photographed in the nude on their first album cover. The late Malcolm Mclaren was the groups manager.

        • SMARTASS8 says:

I don’t know anything about Bow Wow Wow but, after Googling about it, I now feel dirty that practically every picture involves a half nude underage girl. How did they get away with that without getting in trouble for kiddie porn? Although, for some reason, album covers by Blind Faith & The Scorpions featured totally nude underage kids as well and none of them were put in jail.

    • kurumais says:

i had such a crush on her back in 80s !!!!! they were no noubt about 15 to 20 years to early

CLOSE YOUR EYES AND THINK OF ENGLAND!!!

  3. Free Comic Book Day is today!

  4. Mike F says:

    Can this thread reach 500?

  5. AvS says:

    Put this right… here:

  6. phil says:

Batman and Robin dopplegangers on the fan aet page.

    • phil says:

no one has an opinion on the Thor pic?

      • generaldark says:

i saw that last night and it actually got me excited a little. Thor is the marvel movie i rather see then iron man or cap. the suit looks nice, i just wish he wore the helmet too.

        • phil says:

I’m certainly no Thor fan, but if a picture can get me geeked about seeing a movie…thats the picture!

now for a photo of Antman 🙂

          • generaldark says:

meeeeeh….antman i dont know. i rather see the atom. but even then. it would be interesting to see a shrinking super hero on screen.

          • kurumais says:

i like the hair and beard i wish the suit looked more like armor then a costume but doesnt look too bad the cape looks perfect thats what i was worried about the most if it would look silly

          • Edward2962 says:

Antman! There’s another potentially interesting film stuck in development hell.I think they were going to use both Scott Lang and Hank Pym?

      • Venom829 says:

Hey, their going for the Copiel redesign, I like it. 🙂

        • SMARTASS8 says:

I could be wrong, but I think that’s why they re-designed Thor’s costume to begin with; to make something they feel would work better for a movie. I also wouldn’t be surprised if we get a “pinecone Cap” design for Chris Evans. Either Marvel is taking tips from Millar or Marvel is where Millar learned that movies are wayyyy more important that the comics they’re based on.

  7. Jeremy says:

I recently read Alan Moore’s run on Supreme and was a little disappointed to find it didn’t have a real conclusion. I know it’s old new but I figured Id just say that and see where it goes.

    • Edward2962 says:

I believe he also wrote a few issues of Youngblood that were never finished.I think it may have had to do with Rob liefield’s financial backers pulling out of his company.

      • Locusmortis says:

Did you read Supreme:Returns as well? The Kirby tribute issue by Moore and Veitch was one of the best single issue books I’ve ever read. I think it got nominated for an eisner a few years ago as well.

        • Edward2962 says:

I saw that.I thought it was brilliant.

          • kurumais says:

i read some supreme back when it was new i thought the premise was interesting but dropped it pretty quickly. then picked it up when alan moore started doing it and it was superman plain and simple and said to myself if i want to read superman ill just read superman not waste time with a clone
            so i dropped that too

            • Locusmortis says:

Its Superman written by Alan Moore, and it was better than 95% of Superman stuff written since Man of Steel.

              • Jeremy says:

It’s basically Alan Moore wanting to write DC characters, but not wanting to go back to DC

                • Locusmortis says:

which is what ABC was meant to be in some ways…until Ironically Wildstorm got bought by DC

    • SMARTASS8 says:

      Supreme is a Sentry ripoff.

  8. TheGateJester says:

Thought ya’ll would like to see this here trailer.

    • kurumais says:

since when did jonah have magical powers?

      ill be seeing it

      • tomstewdevine says:

He always has, hence the name “Hex”, He doesn’t use them in most comics but he always has had them.

        • generaldark says:

WOW i want to see this now, mind you i wish megan fox wasnt in it but i rather see this then iron man 2….

          • Venom829 says:

O, I’d rather prefer Iron Man 2 than this. Megan Fox=Bad Movie

          • tomstewdevine says:

General, come on, this looks half as good as Iron Man 2.

            • generaldark says:

NO, johna hex :P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P i will not have this insubordination. *drops you in pit with sharks with freaking lazer beams attached to there head* hmm ebedently my cycloptic colouge informs that cant be done 😦

        • SMARTASS8 says:

Are you sure about Hex always having powers? I could be wrong since I haven’t read every comic he’s ever appeared in, but, unless you’re just referring to the Vertigo version of him(I never read those minis), I don’t remember him ever having magical powers. If he did, why couldn’t he fix his face?

    • Stamps says:

I really want to see it. I’m going to have to shield my eyes from Megan Fox’s toe thumbs during the movie though.

  9. Jeremy says:

Anybody reading the Doctor Who series by Tony Lee. I like it because it really captures the feeling of the David Tennant series.

  10. Smallmaniac says:

I think I’m going to miss Free Comic Book Day. I won’t make it to my local shop until noon.

  11. generaldark says:

  12. kurumais says:

has anyone been reading the NOMAD back up series in cap? i could be wrong (and i usually am ) but did sean mckeever just go YURI with her and aracna?

i would love to hear peoples thoughts on this strip as a whole it seems to me to an ok but unspectacular all ages comic and its paired with brubaker’s more mature storytelling approach cap series. does anyone think that its a good match? why does tom breevoort and lauren sankovitch think it is?

    • TheMSpot says:

Becaue Breevoort is a fucking idiot.
It is suck a wierd contrast between the Nomad back-up and main Cap story.
I don’t see how this is going to relate to the main Cap story, at least it isn’t wiki padding.
I think their hoping that those that read Cap will read Mckeever’s young allies. I probably won’t but will see.

      • Locusmortis says:

I gave up buying Cap when it went to 3.99 but I have read a couple of the nomad backups and I haven’t been impressed. Its light but not funny, its neither one thing nor the other, it dosen’t serve as a good advert for Young Allies.

      • Luiz de Mello says:

“Becaue Breevoort is a fucking idiot.”

That is an unfair statement, you’re insulting one part more than it deserves to be insulted. And by ‘that part’ I don’t mean Tom B.

        • kurumais says:

          lol thats cold luiz

          • Luiz de Mello says:

What, I am just being honest, while he keeps saying the stuff he says, doing ‘editorial job’ as he does, and behaving like a jerk, to me he will always be lower than an idiot 😛

        • TheMSpot says:

Anytime I hear Breevoort’s name that thought pops into my head only because he was the one that greenlit Reborn and mishandled that whole mini and threw Brubaker under the bus because of it. Now it seems like Brubaker has not fully recovered from that since. The last couple of issues were OK and had some of the things that I like in Brubaker’s writing that I liked from Criminal, but there no where near Criminal level or pre Cap #601.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

You know you’ve been reading too much Manga when you speak English but use a Japanese term to describe a lesbian. LOL!

I was never the biggest McKeever fan, but his going over to DC has made him unreadable. I tried to read his Nomad mini(I don’t know why since I hate Marvel & was never fond of Liefeld’s female Bucky) but I couldn’t make it past the first issue.

  13. kurumais says:

why do i get the feeling E’s car kept getting dirty that day

    http://www.geekologie.com/2010/04/everything_thats_right_in_the.php

  14. Venom829 says:

I would like to hear Elliot and Jose’s thoughts on Joey Q. writing Spider-Man…again? I have a bad feeling about, and I don’t think I need to explain why.

  15. Pobra says:

Hey Jose, I picked up the new Tegan and Sara today. So there will be no need for bloodshed 😛

  16. alatriste says:

I had to view the last three installments of the CCW video channel in one sitting (not that it is a bad thing) and seeing that you mention the Golden Loeb, and the most likely winner so far, I think you should issue some other awards, like for example: The Golden Liefeld, to the artist that is more inexplicably popular despite the fact that his art sucks, the Joe Mad award to the most incosistent (or consistently late) artist of the year, and the Golden Simmons for the most blatant rip off. Oh, sorry, “homage”.

    • Venom829 says:

Joe Mad and the Golden Summers can be both named after Mark Millar when you think about it.

    • Luiz de Mello says:

I almost feel like suggesting adding the Golden Bendis to your list for the writer who has the most boring pointless long dialogues combined with the worst/most numerous plot devices in a single history, but I think that for years to come Bendis would himself win that one multiple times a year, so quite pointless.

    • Deemar says:

The Chuck Austen award for most mentally ill writer

      • Venom829 says:

Another award that could be based on Mark Millar! 😛

      • SMARTASS8 says:

Chuck Austen still wrote better dialogue & soap opera type drama than Bendis imho. He wasn’t a great writer, but he wasn’t totally talentless.

        • Deemar says:

          Austen’s problem,he didn’t have a filter of self-edit button.

          • SMARTASS8 says:

From what I understand, that goes for his writing as well as his online interaction with fans. Although, considering a fanboy once wrote that he hoped Austen died in a fire(probably the worst thing I’ve ever read online involving an upset fan and a comic writer/artist), maybe he had a point in getting snarky & eventually leaving the industry.

            • You think if someone said the same thing to Bendis maybe he would leave the industry too? Or is that just wishful thinking?

              J.

              • SMARTASS8 says:

I wish it were that easy. I think for Bendis to leave the industry, you’d probably need an exorcism. Either that, or a doctor who specializes in removing tumors.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

Why can’t there be an inept comic book talent with the last name Showers?

  17. Locusmortis says:

    Good who tonight

  18. vegedge says:

just saw ironman 2 on a torrent… i think its kinda a letdown. was not expecting much but man, blackwidows acting is kinda bad, and the villain whiplash is really out there and doesnt fit at all.

i know finding a ironman villain is hard that would work in a movie. (probally as bad as a superman one) but still. awkward film all around.

now the new doctor who. that was great.

    • Venom829 says:

Ah, I want it to be good 😦

      • generaldark says:

        n00b question, whats a torrent?

        • Venom829 says:

A type of computer extension where you can track files, and download them such as moves, music, comics, etc.

          • generaldark says:

ah, well if its true then it confirmed my suspicionse that this movie will be bad, ah the thought of pissed of fan bois 😀

            • vegedge says:

dont base you seeing it on my word. i didnt like parts of the first one either.

it just was not what i expected. i was hoping for itto grow into more of a comic book film and less just action and star cameos.

nick fury is strange and not a badass just kind of a dick.
seems like they took away his espinoage secret goverment vibe

              • generaldark says:

well of all the charecters in the movie, nick fury is a pretty big disapointment.

                • SMARTASS8 says:

That’s because it’s Ultimate Nick Fury. I love Sam Jackson but my Nick Fury is the bad ass good guy from 616(pre-Bendis of course). The Ultimate Nick Fury is a fucking scumbag who makes Henry Peter Gyrich look like a respectable government agent.

                • Deemar says:

Not for me I am a admitted Sam Jackson fanatic, but I think he’ll be fun.

Other than maybe Bruce Willis or Clint Eastwood I can’t see any other actor being able to command respect and presence of personality to stand with a bunch of Superheroes in a movie.

    • aidan mc irish says:

definatly loving the new matt smith series hey jose when are you starting up the doctor who thread we need to discuss what happened to the angels and what he doctor said about the cracks in time

    • Deemar says:

      Stealing is wrong friend….

      …so got a link

      heh

  19. vegedge says:

free comicbook day. i got my atomic robo, tick, and that hellboy/bprd issue from 2007(saved money on ebay!)

my shop also gave out other books so i got solomonkane and spiderman 600 for free. weird but awesome!

  20. aidan mc irish says:

personally i can’t wait to read matt fraction’s thor i didn’t read his thor one shots but i heard they where amazing i guess this free comic book is a jumping on point for any people who don’t know that much about thor or iron man and are getting into them because of the movies.

    • littlekingryan* says:

His minis were good. I’m not weighing in on the FCBD issue because my fucking comic shop didn’t have any. Yes, I’m a little disappointed. Did someone say torrent?

    • Mike F says:

I’d be more enthusiastic if fucking Marvel didn’t shove him to the curb because Gillen was doing so successful with the title. Its almost like the Conan/Leno thing. One guy SHOULD be there and was told to be there and then they realize “oh Gillen’s doing well, let’s let him stay even tho we already told Matt to come…”

  21. Morlock50 says:

Hope everyone got a good stash on FCBD. Got the latest Walking Dead (you guys got any opinions on this book?) and Invincible #1 reprint and #71, which I haven’t read yet. I picked up Incorruptible/Irredemable as an afterthought, and it’s was a damn good read. Very interesting premise.

    • littlekingryan* says:

Walking Dead is one of the most consistently good books on the market. Without being spoilerish, you have to wonder how long the present circumstances in that book will last. Like Invincible, it actually creates real suspense, instead of merely taking a passing glance at it. Support creator-owned books!

  22. Mike F says:

Predictions: Wolverine kills Matt Murdoch in the upcoming SHADOW-LAND event and then Foggy takes up the role of Daredevil.

  23. Deemar says:

Damn missed a whole thread convo

  24. Venom829 says:

Hey everybody, here’s a preview of Secret Avengers, yes, a NON-BENDIS AVENGERS COMIC:

    http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=5060

    • aidan mc irish says:

i’m not a big fan of brubaker because he has a hard on for steve rogers but this line up definately looks the best

  25. mbell028 says:

Drinking a cold beer and watching Cloverfield how could my night be any better. Forgot how AWESOME this movie is. HOw does everyone else feel about it.

    • I really liked it. Thought it was very well done.

I myself am drinking beer and watching the this week’s episodes of Fringe, Supernatural and Doctor Who.

      J.

      • Locusmortis says:

Cloverfield is great if you want a headache.

The whole shakey-cam thing is way overdone and the shifting back and forth pov shots are fair annoying.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

I didn’t hate it as much as some, but overall it was a disappointment. The hot girl dies, the funny guy is behind the camera the whole time(I’m a big fan of T.J. Miller), a lot of gaps in logic(the amount of time it takes to get to the girl’s apartment should have taken a lot longer; you’re in danger and out of breath but you keep filming?) and the creature’s design rivaled Bay’s Transformers for cgi shit. IMHO, of course. 8)

  26. mbell028 says:

very cool I’ve been meaning to watch Fringe I guess I was banking on it coming to instant Netflix. I’m on season 3 of Buffy thanks to that. Hey jose have you ever read Crossed by Garth Ennis. I just finished reading it the other day. It was a solid book it had some pretty gruesome scenes almost a little too far, but I feel like it helped explain the extremity of the nature of the Crossed. When I was reading it, it reminded me of you and elliots review of Ultimate Avengers. The violence was pretty shocking, but it actually had emotional depth. If you haven’t read it I definately recommend it.

    • The hard cover collection just came out this week. I’ll check it out when I get a chance. Thanks.

      J.

      • Locusmortis says:

I have zero interest in Crossed, its just shock for shocks sake in my opinion.

If you want to read an Ennis comic thats actually well written, then read Battlefields, its one of the best books out there at the moment.

        • mbell028 says:

I’ll respectfully disagree that the violence is strictly for shock and awe(although I think it is part of it, but more to get the audiences attention), but I have heard Battlefield is really good I will check it out.
          Thanks,
          Matt

  27. SMARTASS8 says:

I saw The Losers yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I don’t know why it isn’t having much box office success. It’s PG-13(R rated movies usually lose a lot of money from potential underage ticket buyers), has a very charismatic cast(Chris Evan steals all his scenes but proves to me he’s all wrong for Captain America), some pretty cool action scenes, and a villain who chews his way through the scenery(I’m surprised it was Jason Patric since he’s always been so bland in other movies I’ve seen him in). All I can think is that it’s not connecting with movie audiences because it’s not a known property, none of the cast are really household names, it looks too similar to the more well known A-Team, and I’m not the only one who thinks Zoe Saldana is all skin & bones(and neck). Oh well. Since I’m not sure I want to see Kick Ass & Iron Man 2 and Jonah Hex looks like ass, at least one good comic book movie came out this year imho.

    • That is very good to hear. I’m going to try to see this movie during the week.

      J.

    • aidan mc irish says:

yeah kick ass was good you should go see it before it drops off the face of the earth also jonah hex does look but i don’t know it’s so hard to make a good western as will smith’s wild wild west can tell you also am going to see iron man 2 tomorrow it looks awesome.

  28. Luiz de Mello says:

There is this ‘Sentry’ pic on CBR and man it makes me laugh http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/4278/majinboob.jpg and I do think Bendis’ Sentry is pretty much like that 😛

    • SMARTASS8 says:

Man do I miss Cracked Magazine! In its heyday, when it had John Severin, Don Martin, and Daniel Clowes, I liked it better than Mad.

Also, from that list, Lois looked hotter when she was black. I’m just sayin’.

    • phil says:

Being naive at that time, I actually liked Tyroc. I remember him being powers-wise like a cross between Banshee and BlackBolt. He had that sonic scream, whose sound could manifest into solid objects if I’m remembering correctly. I must have blocked out the reprehensible backstory or paid it no nevermind at the time

And man, Mike Grell’s rationalle 4 why he designed Tyrocs’ costume that way (sure it was in protest, but still)

Well…the things you see with fresh eyes, huh? I remember diggin’ Tarzan, also, but I won’t even go into that.

    • kurumais says:

      cracked always has great lists

my boy falcon made number 1 damn but i always hated that snap wilson stuff
chrisopher priest started using it again on his cap and falcon series but we never got to know where he was going to take it they cancelled it still makes me sad loved that run

  29. Ex Machina is pronounced ” ex mach-ee-nah” not “ex ma-sheen-ah”.

    That is all.

    J.

    • Deemar says:

Yeah Ex Ma-Sheen-ah is Charlie Sheen’s Ex wife

    • SMARTASS8 says:

I somehow got it in my head as a little kid that the H in Thor was silent. I passed on this incorrect info to my friends. I also pronounced Avengers as av-n-gers. It’s hard to believe I was at the head of my class all throughout grade school when I thought stupid shit like this.

  30. vegedge says:

    anyone reading SOLOMON KANE?

i got the first mini and now the deaths riders is out? was wondering if its good or not.

    i need more horror comics.

  31. Mike F says:

The trailer to Inception looks so ridiculous. Its just Han Zimmer hitting a drum ever five seconds. Man, what a joke.

  32. TheMSpot says:

Anyone see the preview of Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine #1, it looks interesting. (it’s Jason Aaron) But anyone else think that Spidey looks a little like Alan Moore for some reason.

  33. Dre says:

Hello, there. Would it be wrong to tell you all I just saw Iron Man 2 and thought it was just meh. This wasn’t bad, but the first difinitely outshines it more ways than one.

  34. kurumais says:

i hadnt been to the shop in a few months just got a HUGE stack of books
man it sucks to be cheshire this year

  35. SMARTASS8 says:

I just saw “How To Train Your Dragon” and much to my surprise, I fucking loved it!!! I’ve always been more of a Pixar guy. In fact, I’ve even enjoyed the few cgi animated movies from Blue Sky/20th Century Fox than what Dreamworks has given us. I’ve always found Dreamworks movies to be all pop culture references with little in terms of humor and about as much of a sincere heart as a “very special episode” of an 80’s sitcom. After “Kung-Fu Panda” & “Dragon”, I now feel Dreamworks has the potential to be as good as Pixar. This movie had cooler creature designs & breathtaking dragon flying scenes than “Avatar”, badass Vikings that made me even less excited for “Thor” than I already was(if there is any accuracy to their wardrobe in this movie, Kirby’s Thor costume looked more genuine than the medieval armor Coipel gave him), and Craig Ferguson as a 1-armed, 1-legged Viking blacksmith. I hope this movie continues its legs and doesn’t fade away with the latest Platinum Dunes “opus”(to be honest, I haven’t seen the latest “Nightmare On Elm Street” but I’ve seen the rest of their crappy theatrical movies) and “Iron Man 2:ScarJo Can’t Act”.

  36. mbell028 says:

what did everyone think of the Iron Man and Thor book on Free Comic book day? I honestly thought it was okay I thought the art was pretty mediocre and the story was pretty solid, but not great. I thought last years avengers story was a lot better.

I was impressed with the War of the Superman book was pretty good. I haven’t been reading Superman or the World of Krypton books, but this book helped me catch up on what was going on and what to expect for the mini-series. The fact that it’s only 4 issues makes me curious to check it out especially since I plan on reading Superman during JMS’s run. I’m hesitant to pick it up because I haven’t heard anything good about any of James Robinson’s current books. I may just pick of the first issue just to see how it is.

  37. littlekingryan* says:

I thought the Iron Man/Thor book was pretty good. Romita struggles a bit with the new Iron Man armor, but a nice, solid little story with great art and those gorgeous watercolor-like Dean White colors. It was good, self-contained, and obviously aimed at getting a few new readers into comic shops after leaving the movie theaters this summer (or whenever Thor comes out). I wish I had a hard copy. Last year’s Marvel offering was great, too, and probably the only full-length book Jim Cheung has done in two years. I prefer it to this year’s Free Comic Day comic by a small margin. Alas, I couldn’t get a hard copy of it, either. I thought DC’s comic was inferior to Marvel two years running. Shorter, not as satisfying, and more obviously an advertisement for a current event.
