So…I know I promised you guys some reviews today but that didn’t quite happen. Truth be told…I have had, I guess, what is considered ‘writer’s block’ for about a month or so now(so far). I can only assume that that is what it is since I really don’t consider myself a writer of any sort and therefore have never really gone through it. It’s either that or I am becoming overly critical of the reviews I have attempted to write. Needless to say I have nothing to post as of yet. The more pressure I seem to put on myself to write the reviews the worse they seem to be…in my opinion anyway. All I can ask is that you please be patient with my writing ineptitude for the time being. I hope this whole thing clears up sooner rather than later.
Don’t worry about writing any reviews. Just as long as you chime in on whether you liked, disliked, or didn’t even read the comics that are discussed here is plenty good.
As long as I’m on the subject of reviews, did anyone read the Titans Special from last Wednesday? I was hoping for the best(I know they’re not Titans, but I love Deathstroke) but it was worse than I could have imagined.
SPOILERS
Not only did they kill one of the few replacement heroes I liked(Ryan Choi), they made Osirus & Tattooed Man evil. I’m not real familiar with Tattooed Man(I know he had a Final Crisis Aftermath mini and I think he’s the second person to go by that name after the Silver Age Green Lantern villain) but I liked Osirus. This was shit that I always complain about Marvel for. Killing off characters for no real reason and poor characterizations of others.
I haven’t read that issue but that is why I stopped buying Teen Titans. Every other issue someone was dieing and I was fucking getting sick of it. And don’t even get me started on the Titans title. Those titles have been cancer for the last 2 years.
The bad thing is that neither of the “big 2” is good at “maximizing their assets”. They either don’t use them enough or they overuse them. Speaking of that, which franchise is currently being ruined the most with an overabundant number of titles? X-Men/mutant books, Avengers books, Batman Family books, or Green Hornet & Kato books?
Speaking of E ruining things, we were supposed to do more tapings today to review Siege, Birds of Prey and a few other books. He decided to call me at work at tell me he had to cancel. I wasn’t surprised.
Why? I am going to go ahead and guess it’s because he’s a douche. Either that or he had to attend a graduation party for someone in his family. Him being a douche is more likely though.
You should use Avi to replace Elliott anytime he cancels. Although, since Elliott plays the ringleader part so well, the show probably wouldn’t be the same without him(not that you’re a circus act Jose, just that Elliott is sort of the unofficial leader of CCW since he talks the most).
I have to say, Elliott is a good sport. If I was trashed as much as he is online, I’d be telling everyone to go fuck themselves and/or threatening them with acts of violence.
Well, one of the guys responsible for a lot of the Teen Titans bloodshed is Marvel’s problem now. I was actually looking forward to McKeever coming over to DC. It wasn’t much later that I was wishing he’d leave.
Yeah, I know some times I wonder whether I should change the title of my posts on my blog from random thoughts to brain farts, but thats the power of the internet or at least thats where the edit button comes in. Anyway, if you can’t write it down you always have the Youtube video to express how you feel about a book.
Am I the only one who finds it funny after marvel said there would be no more events after siege? But now marvel is coming out with Shadowland in july.
Didn’t they do something like this back in the early 90’s? They split the company into 3-4 different offices/umbrellas? You had the Spidey books,The X-books,”marvel heroes” books, etc? Then I remember when Joe took over he said they were going to limit the X and Spidey books to just a couple of titles each. The more things change…
No. I think Edward was talking about in the 90’s when Defalco was driving the company to bankruptcy. The books were under different offices/ editors and their wasn’t an EIC for a few years till they gave they job to Harras.
I finally saw Iron Man 2 and it was about what I expected. It wasn’t bad(I’d probably recommend it) but not nearly as good as the first movie.
* Scarlett Johansson, besides being less attractive imo than Gwyneth Paltrow, simply can’t act. Her stunt double did a good job in this movie but considering this film was full of big personalities like Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Sam Rockwell, and even Gary Shandling, she came off as bland as wood. I really wish the original casting for Black Widow, Emily Blunt, was used. Hell, they could have even used a real Russian actress who’s used to action movies like Olga Kurylenko(Hitman, Max Payne, Quantum Of Solace).
* Mickey Rourke, while not having many scenes to begin with, just didn’t do it for me. He didn’t have the onscreen presence Jeff Bridges had in the first movie and he was also so grimy looking, I felt he would have been better off playing D-Man/Demolition Man. I also didn’t understand why they merged Crimson Dynamo with Whiplash for the movie. I figured it was because they didn’t want to use another villain in a metal suit again, but he still got into one for the final battle. Iron Man doesn’t have enough decent villains that they can waste 2 for just one character.
* Don Cheadle is a great actor but besides not looking the part of Rhodey(he’s too short & nerdy looking), he didn’t have the charisma of Terrence Howard nor that actor’s chemistry with Downey. In fact, Cheadle came off like he was either acting in a different movie or didn’t want to be there in the first place.
* While I wish we weren’t given any reminders of the, imho, crappy Ultimate Universe, Samuel L. Jackson really perked me up when I started getting a little restless while watching the movie. While he’s more Richard Roundtree than the original Nick Fury’s John Wayne, he definitely is more similar to the 616 Fury than the Ultimate one.
* Sam Rockwell & Gary Shandling(who I originally felt was out of place in this movie based on the trailers) were great. They were funny as well as the type of guys you loved to hate.
* I really loved that the always dependable Jon Favreau gave himself some more lines than he had in the original movie. He’s great as Happy Hogan.
* Downey & Paltrow worked well together again. While their snappy repartee teetered on sounding like bitter divorcees at times, their natural chemistry won out in the end.
All in all a pretty good movie(why is “pretty” a nice compliment unless it’s followed by the word “good”?), but it just makes me wish producers worked harder on casting the right actor for the role instead of basing their decisions solely on an actor’s looks(the guy playing Thor, Johansson), their name(Don Cheadle), or their current industry buzz(Rourke).
I agree with most of your points. I still feel Shandling and Rockwell were out of place in the movie, but apparently I’m the only one who thinks that way. Like I said, they were both just a tad too hammy for my liking.
In fairness to Scarlett Johansson, she didn’t have much of a part. You could easily have deleted Black Widow from the movie and you wouldn’t have to alter the story that much.
I probably would have thought Shandling & Rockwell were a little out of place if it wasn’t for Downey already chewing all the scenery with his sleezy stand-up comedian act going on in both movies.
Back to comics,I read Siege 4. (SPOILER)There’s a point where the Avengers get souped up powers but all we see of this is Cap trowing his Shield at Void a couple of times and Thor’s hammer.I guessing the actual fight took place in one of the tie-ins I refused to by?
I’m seeing that this weekend. I got my Mom into the books(I bought the first one for her for Christmas) and she’s so upset that, since the author is dead, there aren’t going to be any more after the 3rd book.
As in the last Open Thread I will call BULLSHIT on this. Fucking Jepf Loeb and his fucking shitty comics. They are killing the industry…and my sanity. This makes no sense!!! Ross was killed buy Rulk. Rulk and Ross have been seen in the same panel together multiple times.
I was flipping channels in my car today and they mentioned it on Howard Stern. I think the only reason he even got those jobs at Marvel is due to the fact that he’s a friend of Stern’s and JoeyQ is a Stern fan.
Super Castlevania IV was the fucking shit though. Had one of the BEST video game soundtracks EVAR!!!!!! One of the very few games I downloaded to my Wii. I also downloaded two Turbographix 16 games. If you can guess what they are I will send you a prize. 🙂
Also, yeah as time went by a few good Castlevania games came and went but after that bullshit 64 one, man they started to really suck… That Playstation one however was really great. Probably the last good one.
As big gamers as you guys are, you’ll probably laugh at this. I think the first PS Castlevania was the last video game, or at least one of them, that I played all the way through. Why the hell hasn’t there been a Castlevania movie yet? Actually, if you look at most movies based on video games & toylines, maybe that’s a good thing.
There’s a LOT of good games like that Casthlevania one that would be so fun to watch as movies, but the sad part is the movie makers have different visions from the game makers… so the translation gets fucked up and bam, a failure is released.
I know, but I really don’t think this could qualify. I mean, she really has done SO much work that sometimes you hear a song and it just sticks in your head subconsciously.. or something… anything! damn it I loved her music so much! 😦
I completely agree with you. There is soooo much music in the world that at certain times there are coincidences like these. I truly believe that. Kanno is a music Goddess. She can not be faulted.
She’s written as many songs as Bendis has comics. She’s written enough Original songs, that if she wrote a handful that sounded borrowed, then its not a huge deal, she proved she can write her own music. And besides some of those samples weren’t that close really… I agree too, there are only so many chords you can make on a guitar before it sounds like its been done before. I can only imagine music 30 years from now when everything really has been done..
That was a great issue. That series continues to impress me with every issue up to and including the one that was released this week. The title is just amazing.
It was masterful how it blended in the life of Kipling and the subplots from the series at large. I’d have to say I think it’s one of the best comics on the market.
If any of you are fans of good sci-fi and/or genre television in general and haven’t been watching Fringe you are really, really missing out. I just finished watching yesterday’s episode and it was awesome.
God was she hot back then. Poor Debbie Harry, getting old is a bitch.
When they released those old Muppet Shows on DVD, a guy I know mentioned this one clip(around 2:40) to me. Probably the closest The Muppet Show ever got to a burlesque number.
So I read in Entertainment Weekly that there is going to be a new Muppet’s Movie with Jason Segel starring. I always loved the Muppets, so I will hope that this movie won’t be atrocious.
Boy those Japanese love robots of any kind. I’ve seen that commercial before but I just noticed that it seemed to have music from City Slickers playing in the background.
That’s the funny thing about Japanese commercials, you can never tell what they are about. And the doubt Nike Cage knows what it is about either, just as long as the check clears.
Filming on Transformers 3 begins this tuesday according to Yahoo. Yahoo also interviewed Shia Labeouf where he said that Revenge of the Fallen got way too big (too many robots, things blowing up, etc..) and lost the human element through out the movie. That in part 3 they plan to make it the best of the trilogy and the best movie ever made period. I’m not sure if that is possible when having Michael Bay directing. That’s just my opinion. Labeouf also stated that there are going to be lots of deaths, human deaths. If any one dies i hope its this stupid ass bitch (Sam’s Mom) Seriously! she was one of the worst parts of the movie along with those twin robots who were typical sterotypes.
What are you guys hoping for in the third installment??
Me 1. More Megan Fox, 2. Death list: the Mom, the new latino kid, Twin Robots, and John Turtorro’s character. 3. Unicron.
I love how the easily offended movie goers cried that the robot twins were unfair to black people. Considering the “twins” weren’t given the same color as a black person’s skin and I’ve heard plenty of white kids talk that way, the liberal defenders seem more racist than Michael Bay by implying that ignorant sounding robots must have been based on black people. That’d be like saying the robot that was humping Megan Fox’s leg was unfair to Italians.
We already had this discussion on the youtube boards back when the movie came out. I don’t think I want to go through that all over again. I would rather we just not talk about Michael Bay ever.
After just watching/reading for the first time your discussion about TF2 on YouTube, I have to say that as much shit as you get, Jose, for being so negative, I might be even worse. Not only did I think the first TF movie was about as bad as the second one(Prime is a great leader but starts bouncing around “Spike’s” yard/flower garden like an ADD addled teen with a meth addiction; “Spike” starts making out with Megan Fox while lying on top of Bumblebee, his new best friend? Is he into orgies?), but I also disliked Drag Me To Hell & Star Trek.
Yeah, that’s what a franchise about giant transforming robots needs, a human element. (big ass motherfucking eye roll)
Even though as a kid growing up in the 80’s I was way more into G.I. Joe, Masters Of The Universe, Star Wars, Secret Wars, and Super Powers, I did like Transformers. All of that “like” was killed off with Michael Bay’s 2 cinematic abortions. I seriously don’t care what they do with the third movie. It would have to star the resurrected Jesus Christ before it could make up for the previous 2. Too bad Hasbro bought up Tonka years ago and currently owns the rights to the Gobots as well. Maybe a director who wasn’t a middleaged manchild with the vision & skills of an amateur pornographer could make a good transforming robot movie.
I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark
When he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
And that’s an awful lot girl
And now, now you’ve gone away
And all I’m trying to say is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you
I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He’s way better than Ben Affleck
And now all I can think about is your smile
and that shitty movie too
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you
Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you
Now all you need to do is mix that up with some drum and bass and you’ll have yourself a #1 dance hit. Think of all the sweet royalties you’ll get from NOW That’s What I Call Music 153. Though those lyrics do sound oddly familiar.
That was my point too, Transformers was about robots shooting lasers at each other. If that isn’t entertaining enough to carry a Transformers movie I don’t want to see it…
IDK i don’t agree with you there. Transformers isn’t just about robots and lasers. It’s about a teenage HUMAN BOY who purchased his first car and it turned out to be an alien that transforms and helps the boy save the world. And gets Megan Fox at the end!!! LOL Just like Iron Man isn’t just about an Armored Suit with Lasers. Its about a (HU)MAN who has a second chance to make a difference and takes up the armored suit to rid the world of weapons. The HUMAN element is why we go to the movies. this is the reason why our favorite movies are our favorite movies. It’s because we can relate to them. This is what i consider the Human Element.
been reading spoilers for the end of seige and the sentry dieing.
i swear to god. if the sentry returns mixed with the symbiot carnage(who he threw into the sun in NA) i am gonna finally blow up bendis’ bald fucking mansion.
haha lol but hopefully bendis is gonna bring his a game for writing the regular avengers again no dark or mighty and for some reasom they still need to have a new avengers team which is essentialy luke cage and friends but this time with the thing
Supposedly Bendis grew up as a Marvel Zombie and has always loved the Marvel Universe & its characters. Does Bendis have Stan Lee’s bad memory or is he just a liar like JoeyQ(who will often talk of his love for Marvel’s characters growing up even though interviews prior to his appointment to EIC say otherwise)? Reading his comics makes it seem like he’s never read one Marvel Comic before and is unable to use Wikipedia or the Marvel Handbooks to rectify that.
I wonder if all of the complaints about Bendis online are just that, a few online complainers who dislike his work, or if Marvel continuing to put him in charge of the Avengers(not only is he still writing New Avengers but now the latest Avengers flagship book as well), in spite of so many online protests for a change in direction, will lead to a drop in sales from fans who have finally had enough? I know the Marvel hype machine and the weak minded Zombies will lead to so good number initially, but will it last? I was looking at Embedded the other day, and despite it being only 22 pages of story, it was $3.99 since it was connected to the latest Avengers crossover. What happened to Marvel, after DC received praise for the backups in their $3.99 books, saying they were planning on doing backups all along. Except for that shitty McKeever story featuring Liefeld’s Bucky, there still haven’t been any. This is the only comic company that continues to lie to its customers and is still rewarded for it. It is just fucking insane.
Damn! I just made a comment to Mike F the other day about how he’s going to have a stroke if he keeps calling for Geoff Johns’ head every time one of his books comes out and here I start a post by posing a question for debate that leads into me ranting & raving about how unprofessional I feel Marvel is. I really need to take my own advice. LOL! No wonder my doctor has me on high blood pressure medecine.
It may not be as “cool” years later as some still feel G.I. Joe & Transformers are, but Masters Of The Universe will always be my favorite toyline and one of my favorite franchises of all time. As a matter of fact, I’m dressed as She-Ra right now.
I couldn’t agree with you more! Not only was He-Man the first cartoon allowed to be made based on a toy(stupid parents groups), even the D-list toylines(Max Steele & Roboforce, Sectaurs) have greater mythologies & creativity to them than what kids today have. To be honest, I’m not sure kids even play with toys anymore. It seems like most toys are bought by either guys in their late 20’s to early 30’s or by Ebay scalpers.
I didn’t have any Visionaries but I remember them. I still see people bringing them up every once in awhile. If Battle Beasts is getting a relaunch, I’m sure these guys could one day as well. We’ve had various relaunches for MOTU, G.I. Joe, and Transformers over the years, but I’m still waiting for M.A.S.K., C.O.P.S., Thundercats, and Silverhawks.
Has anyone ever read the Archie Comics miniseries from the 80’s called ManTech? It was based on an unsuccessful Centurians ripoff toyline(or maybe Centurians ripped them off?) but the comic, if I remember correctly, dealt with some pretty heavy stuff. Like Robocop, these were guys who were stuck in cyborg bodies but still had memories of their human lives.
I loved Gobots as a kid too! Transformers had the better mythology & cartoon, but I probably had more Gobots since I could carry a bunch of them around with me in a shoebox.
It seems that besides the great American made toylines/cartoons, we even had better Japanese imports as well(that seems to be all American kids even have these days). While I’m happy Pokemon was created since it made Nintendo so much money they didn’t have to go to software only like Sega, I’ll take Voltron, Tranzor Z, Robotech, and Spectreman over Pikachu any day.
I wish more people watched the Masters Of The Universe revamp that was done. It really brought the Eternian mythology alive and did it so well. Here was a great example, where He-Man learns from where his powers originate. The entire episode is on Youtube and it’s hi-def.
I saw every episode of it. It was probably the only cartoon I made sure I didn’t miss an episode of since I used to get up for Saturday Morning Cartoons(something else kids of today don’t have). I liked that they had strong continuity with a continuing storyline, but I still prefer the Filmation version. I didn’t like most of the redesigns(Sorceress, Battle Cat, He-Man’s sword, Zodac) and I hated that He-Man was a glorified sidekick on his on show with no personality at all & Battle Cat was just a furry vehicle. At least it was better than the New Adventures Of He-Man(the one where he was in space). I was too old at the time to collect the toys and I couldn’t make it past more than a few minutes of the cartoon.
Well, I actually did like the redesigns. Battlecat just becoming a “furry vehicle” was a little disappointing, but it was made up for by not making Orko nearly as annoying as he was in the Filmation version. And what could you have against Zodac’s revamp? All they did was make him black and add a few tattoos. He still essentially looked the same.
Personally, this is my favorite American cartoon series that was ever done and, to this day, it burns me up that they didn’t get renewed for another season. Hordak was to become the main villain and She-Ra was to be introduced. The reason why King Grayskull was so large was because his power was divided equally between He-Man and She-Ra.
I didn’t like Zodak because I’m a racist. I’m kidding. I just liked that Zodac, the original guy, was a spaceman while Zodak was some antisocial mystic armed with a bo and painted with tribal tattoos. “Spaceman” always beats “mystic” in my book. The Filmation Orko is one of my favorite characters from that show as juvenile as he was. He seemed like a little kid with a voice to match. I don’t feel the new Orko was that different than the old one other than having an amulet instead of an “O” on his shirt as well as having a grating voice like a shemale.
King Grayskull was OK, but he was too similar looking to He-Man. He basically took the place of He-Ro, a character from Eternia’s past as well but one who had different powers & a more distinct look. They were going to bring him in towards the end of MOTU’s original 80’s toyline but it was canceled before he was made…
You’re complaining about a character looking too similar? At least the revamped show went out of their way to make Adam and He-Man look distinctly different. Even as a kid, I could never understand how we were supposed to accept how Adam and He-Man looked EXACTLY the same and yet nobody caught on to his secret identity. Hell, even Superman used a pair of eyeglasses.
I can understand your point about Zodac. It’s a fair one. But I still loved his new incarnation. The new Zodac was pretty badass. He didn’t do very much in the original show.
They didn’t look exactly the same. He-Man was a half-naked straight man with a spray on tan. Adam, on the other hand, was pale & “fabulous”!
I’ll give you that Prince Adam had a more distinct personality than He-Man on the 2002 MYP cartoon(or should I say that, unlike the 2002 He-Man, he actually had a personality), but I prefer the Clark Kent/Superman style of Filmation’s rather than the Billy Batson/Captain Marvel style of the MYP cartoon.
Going into Toys R Us now a days is just fucking depressing. What the hell happened to all the good toys? No wonder kids are doing meth and having sex. Their toys suck!
Yeah and add in the Hannah Montana and that douchie Jonas brothers show that they’re watching and by the time we get old are in charge of everything the planet is simply doomed.
Your analysis misses the complete overlap, i.e. the meth doing, sex having, playstation playing and mcdonalds eating kids these days. A large portion of which, studies have shown, perform all these activities all at the same time.
Alan’s stories were great. In a way, that run was a precursor to Watchmen in the sense that he took a pretty corny archetype and did a darker take on it.Not just in the violence but also in examining the psychology of the characters.
Yeah I really did like the story and am probably gonna pick up issue 1 when I get the chance. Too bad Marvel is probably gonna fuck up Marvelman by making a new ongoing Written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Greg Land. The only way Marvel could possibly make a good Marvelman comic is if they get Neil Gaiman to complete his unfinished Silver Age and Dark Age storylines.
i got the first ten for 5 bucks at a con. and now i cant find a single issue past ten without it being like 10-15 bucks.
marvel is gonna reprint all the miracleman soon. the 50’s stuff first.
i am pissed marvel bought it all. its cool to be re released but i dont want them owning any more things i like.
one day i am gonna save up enough money and buy the rights away from them of something that marvel fails at writing good. like daredevil or squirell girl
I’m not sure if the rights thing with Miracleman is 100% cut & dry. McFarlane still thinks he owns some and Hasbro was going to release a Miracleman toy for their Marvel Universe line but canceled it. I wonder if that was due to the rights still being up in the air. I think the 50’s stuff, the stuff most people don’t even want, is all they can defintely reprint right now. Now that Marvel has a Captain Marvel ripoff(to go along with their own Captain Marvel where Rick Jones was basically Billy Batson), maybe they’ll buy the rights to Supreme so they can have a Superman ripoff.
Then they’d have a whole set! They already have Wonder Woman (Zarda,Princess Power) and a couple Batmans (Moon Knight, two versions of Nighthawk). I think the 60’s X-Men and Doom Patrol literally debuted within a month of each other, so the jury still out about who rip off who on that one…
I’d also compare Swamp Thing & Man-Thing(their first appearances were only months apart), but that would be, imo, like comparing Superman & Bendis’ work on Sentry.
I listened to Bendis talk about the Sentry on Word Balloon and he said this was always the plan for the Sentry.I think he was trying to repeat the Wanda/House of M storyline.Powerful yet sad and hero goes out of control, ends in tragedy. But this one backfired cause NO ONE LIKED HIS DEPICTION OF SENTRY.All the kids are like,”Sentry’s dead,GOOD!”
I just saw IM2.Was it a masterpiece? Of course not. Was it a fun summer movie? Well, yeah! But thing I want to bring up is this…I thought it was ironic to hear the Clash in the background of a couple of scenes THEN I saw Tom Morello’s name in the credits!Tom Morello is the former guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and a pretty left-wing guy! He’s done all kinds of protests and what nots for liberal causes, how’s HE working for a movie about a billionaire who makes weapons for the US military?!
You’re right and I don’t have a huge problem with the movie.I just think it’s ironic that an artist whose image is partly his left-wing politics (I’ve seen pictures where Tom has a cap saying “commie” on) would lend his name to this project. I’d be just as surprised if Rush Limbaugh came out and said he was a big Public Enemy fan. Bass! How low can you go!(smiley face)
Dude,Guitar Hero is totally controlled by the Illuminati, and not that Bendis thing from a few years ago,the REAL one.Just check out the symbols on the logo!
hey did you know kiss stands for knights in satans services….
this is just more people reading into bullshit. these auto tune junkies are not secretly occult masters. they are trying to be abnormal because thats in right now. or they watched national treasure to many times. one time is to many times.
Ah, I see what you’re trying to do there. You’re trying to trick me into saying which side I stand with. Clever, but it won’t work; the time is not right yet.
*swoops his cape over his face and dashes into 7-11 to get a slurpee*
I’ve tried to go to watch it like 3 times, but every time I try to go see it some stuff I have right then comes up. I’ve got to go see it this week, it’s just getting ridiculous at this point.
Jose, do you plan to address the flood of Shadowland news and teasers and minis and one-shots nand so forth Marvels been released over the past couple weeks in upcoming segments? I’d love to hear your thoughst on it and what tie-ins, if any, you plan to get. That is, of course, assuming you’re interested Shadowland itself.
I think the idea to replace a bunch of heroes with minorities was DC trying to add some color(like the real world has) to their universe. I think their killing the characters is probably nothing more than cleaning house of “unpopular” characters and/or using death as a shortcut to drama. Maybe there is something to it, but I doubt it. The current Blue Beetle is still around even though there are a great deal of Ted Kord fans out there and even though Ronnie Raymond came back to life, Jason Rusch is still a part of Firestorm.
BleedingCool’s Rich Johnston responding to yesterday’s “New Apartheid Of DC Comics” article…
RaceWatch: Last night’s post by Ryan Mullenix has certainly caused a little comment across the net. It might be worth pointing out the examples he used do indeed stretch across a period of time, stretch the idea of racial identity to breaking point (I still have difficultly understanding that some people have a different idea of Caucasian than I do – it’s not a synonym for White – and especially when people start to throw Spanish/Irish/Italian heritage into the pot). And you know, John Stewart. And most definitely there doesn’t seem to be any racial motivation in the return of character identities to their previous occupants in the DC universe.
But what there has been is a practical effect. One that should have been considered and possibly countered by the powers-that-be when taking such line-wide actions. And considering that they’ve got Milestone integrated into the DC Universe right now, it’s not as if DC haven’t got a plethora of diversely genetic superhero comic book characters just waiting to be used. Far more than Marvel in fact – yet Marvel seem to have a great frontline diversity that DC do right now.
Even if that includes skateboarders, African princes and people saying “Sweet Christmas”.
Jose, I gotta say that I loved hearing you give praise to the Metal Gear franchise in one of your vids. Metal Gear Solid for the PS was special to me for a couple of reasons. 1) It was my first “M” rated game. 2) It was AMAZING! 3 is probably my favorite…that ending had me in tears.
I could go all day talking about Metal Gear and never tire of praising it. The ending of Snake Eater is probably my favorite ending to a video game ever.
SPOILERS AHEAD
J.
p.s.
Ya, I cried too. Still do whenever I go back and replay it.
I know what you mean. Video games make me cry too. That scene where Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man come together and kiss after the second level always brings a tear to my eye.
Two comic books have made me misty-eyed. One was the issue of ASM where Gwen Stacy dies. And it’s not her death scene that does it. It’s the last page where Peter Parker is telling MJ to just leave him alone and she’s about to open the door and leave, but doesn’t. The other comic was the issue of Spectacular Spider-Man in which Harry Osborn dies.
And one book has made me misty-eyed: Last Exit To Brooklyn, specifically the scene where Tralala is gang-raped toward the end. It’s pretty brutal.
OK, just finished watching Defendor. It wasn’t a great movie but it was definitely good. At least worth a rental if nothing else. And I stand by my previous comment about it being better than Kick Ass. This flick is pretty much what Kick Ass was promised to us as. Plus this movie had way more “heart” than Kick Ass. Sorry, Kick Ass lovers but it’s the god damn truth. Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings were great in it. You could do a lot worse than this flick that is for sure.
Also, Metric does the ending credits song which wins it even more points.
It kills me that all of these movies that look so good like “Special” & “Defendor” go direct to video while “The Tooth Fairy” & “The Back Up Plan” get wide theatrical releases.
agreed, i feel both of those movies had a way better chance of commercial success than any movie that has Jennifer Lopez in it but alas the movie companies aren’t willing to take a risk most the time
i sat behind mark millar at shutter island. after he wrote down the plot and every thing original about the concept of that movie in a notebook, he shouted “GOT IT!” and ran out as fast as he could.
I loved Shutter Island. If I didn’t walk out of Gangs Of New York, I doubt I’ll ever walk out of a Scorsese movie. Millar probably didn’t understand the plot or couldn’t understand the dialogue due it not containing the words “fuck” & “cunt” every 2 seconds.
Saying he walked out of a popular movie at the time makes him look really fucking cool to all of his fans who wish they could lick his taint 24/7. Can you blame him?
Actually, I can. A grown man who has millions in the bank and still goes out of his way to ingratiate himself to a bunch of mouthbreathers with awful taste and limited reading comprehension is just pathetic. Unless some of those people were attractive female comic fans(those are like white buffalos), I would never forego my pride and do something like that.
I know it didn’t get a wide release, but did that movie get any theatrical release at all? I wanted to see it but I never saw any mention of it at the theaters in the western suburbs. Since I haven’t rented anything for years, don’t want to get into Netflix, and am not big about watching movies on my computer, pretty much the only movies I watch are at the theater. Although, with all the fucking kids who can’t stop texting for 2 seconds(the worst case of texting I ever saw was during Kick Ass. Go figure) or whole families talking during flicks(I sat next to a family that literally took up 2 rows during a showing of “Orphan” and they wouldn’t stop talkinng to each other the whole fucking movie, I might just have to reconsider my movie going habits.
I am now watching Uncertainty starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Look’s like it’s “What if Sliding Doors had action in it?” with an artsy feel to it. Just started it though so no real opinion yet.
Isn’t he going to be in Christopher Nolan’s Inception? Didn’t you say awhile back he would probably be good playing a character in another Nolan film series where at present that role is vacant if you get my meaning. 🙂
I saw that Sean Murphy Deviant Art link, cool stuff, what he’s doing now is good stuff, but I believe whatever mainstream work (outside of Vertigo) either DC or Marvel hopefully DC will probably put him over the top. It’s great to be on the ground floor and see a artist break in to the industry like he’s doing now though.
I agree. It will be interesting to see what title he works on after Joe The Barbarian. I wonder if he will just stick with creator owned books for the time being.
Good Question, If he does go the route of just sticking with creator owned books then I would like to see what he could do with a writer like Brian K. Vaughan.
You ordered BioMega? Oh nice, let us know if its worth picking up. I read online that its a short run (only 6 volumes) so I’m debating if I wanna get it now…
Anybody read the Titans: Villains for Hire one shot that came out this week? Not only did it cost $4.99 but it was one of the WORST comics I have ever read. I’m talking huge “Horsehit” levels usually revesrved for Marvel Comics. DC really should feel ashamed of themselves on this one. The only people who would defend this comic are most likely the same people who would defend Dark Avengers.
Really? That’s a shock value offing if ever. CBR’s review said it was one of the worst comics ever as well, and for THOSE guys to say something sucked it has to be fuckin’ toliet paper.
I warned you! That special pissed me off & disgusted me to no end. Not only did I like Ryan Choi, I was initially happy to see Osiris back only to see that he’s now the new Superboy Prime. At least this proves that even though I’m not as down on Geoff Johns as a lot of you guys are, I’m not the DC equivalent of a Marvel Zombie. While Johns & others went out of their way to say Brightest Day was a storyline and not any indication that the DCU was going to be a bright & happy place, I wish they could go a few months without killing anyone. Retire them, put them in a coma, or throw them into the Phantom Zone, but stop killing people. It used to be superhero comics were a nice escape from reality but with Marvel & all of their cold blooded killing “heroes” and DC with their non-stop parade of gruesome death scenes that would give Eli Roth a hard-on, I sometimes feel, after reading my latest comics, that I need to hear details about recent Muslim terrorist acts just to brighten my spirits.
Just heard that Ronnie James Dio passed away this morning, absolutely broken up over it, there aren’t many people who I would have classed as a hero of mine. RIP Ronnie Dio.
One other thing about Dio and the 80’s..he was popular during that 15 min gap when you could be an unattractive guy playing hard rock and still get your video played on MTV (i.e. Twisted Sister,Quiet Riot,Judas Priest). By 85-86 that was over.If you didn’t look like a male model (i.e.Def Lep,Poison,Winger) you were S.O.L.
Thing is I was a school kid and I wasn’t even much of a metal fan then, but I realized TV and Hollywood was a superficial and cruel place.
Yeah, you’re right. Especially with Metallica. They put out what, four releases before they did video? The first was for One from Justice for All,am I correct?
But even back in the day,the “TV” was more important than the “M”.I think I read recently, that MTV 1 has officially stopped referring to that channel as “music” tv.I read that in the paper and thought, “they having been about showing videos for like over ten years.”
I can only really comment about MTV Europe but they stopped showing videos around 97/98. Shows like Party Zone, Headbangers Ball, Ray Cokes Most Wanted were cancelled plus most of the older (and hotter) VJ’s like Kristiane Backer and Marijne van der Vlugt were fired.
That’s pretty close to how it went in the States. Let’s face it,MTV was ALWAYS a corporate entity, but the mid-90’s was the last time you could pretend it was fun.
My biggest fantasy as a teen was that if this song somehow made it into their rotation.
That’s why God created multi-tasking. Play the video in one window while doing something in another one. You don’t park your car to listen to the radio do you?
I usually don’t. I mean even if I was doing a ton of other fun things while this video played it would of still put me to sleep. Its not so much that I was bored at the moment, its the fact that this was such utter nonsense, it almost made me laugh.
Unless your pants are down around your ankles, there are always more “fun things” to do than waste time on a computer. I say this as I’m coing up to the 90 minute mark of time spent on my laptop tonight(for the record, fully clothed). Again, I should practice what I preach.
What I find funny is that he mentions “Wacky Races”, a cartoon that premiered in 1968, as one of his favorites. He was 17 years old at the time. Maybe OxyContin wasn’t the first time he ever used drugs.
Those kids in the video looked like they were starring in a black & white prequel to “Last House On The Left”.
I wonder what Fredric Wertham would think about The New Teen Titans:The Judas Contract, Siege #2, Identity Crisis #1, or any comic featuring Bullseye, Black Adam, Lobo, or Superboy Prime.
Alright guys and gals next Wednesday, when you’re picking up your new comics you MUST go and at least read House of Mystery #25, It if fucking awesome. There are five different writers doing a comic unlike I have ever read. Anyone who liked Sandman or likes Fables has GOT to pick this up.
Another book I read tonight was Red Robin #12, it really wraps up the first 11 issues nicely, and gives you the exact reason that Tim thought Bruce was still alive. I was ready to drop this book after this issue, but now I might stay on board.
Were you ever a fan of it Jose? I hear a lot of people say it had a great first season, but other than 2 or 3 “good” episodes, I wouldn’t even say that. I bailed after the second or third episode of the 2nd season. It couldn’t hold my attention and I started feeling creepy that Hayden Panettiere was the only reason I was still watching.
I watched all of the first 3 seasons and some of the fourth. I was never a fan and really fucking hated that show. I watched it because it was a beautiful train wreck.
Agreed. It was a piece of crap show. I quit during the first season. Total snoozer.
I find it difficult to watch shows with “beautiful people,” where everyone is in perfect shape and looks like a supermodel. That alone put me off the show. Plus it was just extremely slow.
I found the first 3/4 of season one to be pretty interesting. What drove me crazy was you saw them start changing things around to accommodate the popularity of show at the time. Certain characters who you knew were suppose to die, didn’t because of their popularity. That left the next season to deal with three very powerful heroes and villains that way outclassed the majority of the more mundane superheroes. That lead to some rather poor writing choices to depower them or do things to keep them out of the picture. Add that to a badly handled time travel storyline that was simply abandoned(along with a supporting cast member)and a shortened season from the writers strike and I was done with that show after season two.
It also drove be crazy when Tim Kring insisted he had never read comic books before starting to write Heroes. It was obvious to me and a many other people how derivative of the X-Men the show had become, Kring trying to say, nah, I am not copying off anyone, I don’t even read comics, what a pile of complete bullshit that was.
Anyone see the news about Shia Lebouf? First he apologized for the piece of crap that Transformers 2 was, and now he’s apologizing for Indiana Jones as well.
He has talent, but he just needs to work on his drinking & driving and picking shitty movie scripts. While flawed, I don’t think Indiana Jones 4 was worthy of an apology. Imo, it wasn’t as bad as The Phantom Menace. It’s definitely the weakest of the series, but I would still watch it again.
This may have come up around the time of “Planet Hulk” but, considering the idea of Hulk in sandals was supposedly JoeyQ’s idea, I wonder if he ever saw this?
I remember seeing ads for this storyline, but I never read it.
I read that Superman storyline when it came out. First time I was introduced to Mongul (the Action annual is his first post-crisis appearance, apparently). I remember enjoying it, but I was just a punk kid and I haven’t read it since then. Every time I see an off-Earth Superman story I think of those covers though.
He was on a radio show awhile back promoting it, but I forgot all about it. While not the gifted physical comedian that his father was(who I’m currently watching on TVLand), I’ve liked Jason Ritter for awhile. The embarrassing thing is the only time I’ve seen him is on TV chick shows(Joan Of Arcadia, The Class, Parenthood).
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to watch that. If it wasn’t bad enough that Fred Durst was directing it, it stars Jesse Eisenberg, one third of Hollywood’s sullen, emotionless “zombie” teens(along with Michael Cera & Kristen Stewart). I’ve seen enough of those 3 assholes to last a lifetime.
There was also “The Child Within,” which was a sort-of sequel to Kraven’s Last Hunt that appeared in the pages of Spectacular Spider-Man. Another great Spidey storyline that doesn’t get mentioned very much.
I don’t know if people care about this, but the Little Orphan Annie comic strip that ran in newspapers has been canceled. Thing ran for 86 years! I used to read it as a kid.
J.
J.
J.
Yeah having Marvin eating by the fucking Wonder pup?!
How depressing is that book
Answer: Very.
J.
You should do a rant about Teen Titans
That book is so rancid now and it shouldn’t be, it should be one of DC’s flagship titles.
Titans is a prime example of why DC lags behind Marvel, they don’t maximize the assets they have.
Well, in the other hand, Marvel does maximize the assets they have, assets like Bendis, Millar & Loeb exposition. It sells, but it stinks.
He said “assets” not asses.
(ba-dump bump)
The bad thing is that neither of the “big 2” is good at “maximizing their assets”. They either don’t use them enough or they overuse them. Speaking of that, which franchise is currently being ruined the most with an overabundant number of titles? X-Men/mutant books, Avengers books, Batman Family books, or Green Hornet & Kato books?
If Elliott ever posts Last Rants from a couple of weeks ago you will see me get into the whole Green Hornet thing.
J.
Fuckin E. always screwing things up.
Speaking of E ruining things, we were supposed to do more tapings today to review Siege, Birds of Prey and a few other books. He decided to call me at work at tell me he had to cancel. I wasn’t surprised.
J.
Dammit. oh Elliot, WHY!
I need my CCW-TV fix.
Why? I am going to go ahead and guess it’s because he’s a douche. Either that or he had to attend a graduation party for someone in his family. Him being a douche is more likely though.
J.
weak
You should use Avi to replace Elliott anytime he cancels. Although, since Elliott plays the ringleader part so well, the show probably wouldn’t be the same without him(not that you’re a circus act Jose, just that Elliott is sort of the unofficial leader of CCW since he talks the most).
Well, Elliott is the one with the camera and the one who edits our vids. If it weren’t for that I would have kicked him to the curb long ago. 🙂
J.
I 2nd that
I have to say, Elliott is a good sport. If I was trashed as much as he is online, I’d be telling everyone to go fuck themselves and/or threatening them with acts of violence.
E is the fearless leader
How long before we find out Gleek was the monkey responsible for spreading the aids virus?
Well, one of the guys responsible for a lot of the Teen Titans bloodshed is Marvel’s problem now. I was actually looking forward to McKeever coming over to DC. It wasn’t much later that I was wishing he’d leave.
Ya, his shit was a train wreck.
J.
No prob J we gots yo’ back Homie!
Writer’s block is a pain.
That never stopped Bendis.
I do not want to become the next Bendis. That is Geoff Johns’ job.
J.
“…Lo it shall be foretold, that in the time of Acheron a man child will be born!”
“…He will bring Doom upon the land and the seas will boil. For the MELENDEZIAN will smite thine JOHNS.”
It tis an AGE of HIGH ADVENTURE!
Hah!
Which is why I think he is secretly a date raper
Yeah, I know some times I wonder whether I should change the title of my posts on my blog from random thoughts to brain farts, but thats the power of the internet or at least thats where the edit button comes in. Anyway, if you can’t write it down you always have the Youtube video to express how you feel about a book.
Whatever you, however you’re feeling, just never forget: Don’t Panic
Writer’s block happens all the time, I then to get it when I pay bills =)
Just don’t go all Jack Nicholson on us Jose =)
Am I the only one who finds it funny after marvel said there would be no more events after siege? But now marvel is coming out with Shadowland in july.
No..they said no more company wide Events, just several “micro-events” within each family of books.
Translation; Marvel is gonna milk us on multiple fronts
Didn’t they do something like this back in the early 90’s? They split the company into 3-4 different offices/umbrellas? You had the Spidey books,The X-books,”marvel heroes” books, etc? Then I remember when Joe took over he said they were going to limit the X and Spidey books to just a couple of titles each. The more things change…
Yeah, when Joey “asshat” Quesade first got to Marvel he split the books up into “families”
No. I think Edward was talking about in the 90’s when Defalco was driving the company to bankruptcy. The books were under different offices/ editors and their wasn’t an EIC for a few years till they gave they job to Harras.
At least diggle is writing it so it stands a chance of being good
I finally saw Iron Man 2 and it was about what I expected.
I’m just going to be lazy on this one and reply by posting a link to what I thought.
http://themspot1313.wordpress.com/2010/05/12/iron-man-2-randon-thought/
I agree with most of your points. I still feel Shandling and Rockwell were out of place in the movie, but apparently I’m the only one who thinks that way. Like I said, they were both just a tad too hammy for my liking.
In fairness to Scarlett Johansson, she didn’t have much of a part. You could easily have deleted Black Widow from the movie and you wouldn’t have to alter the story that much.
I probably would have thought Shandling & Rockwell were a little out of place if it wasn’t for Downey already chewing all the scenery with his sleezy stand-up comedian act going on in both movies.
exaclty. In the first movie RDJ chewed up like 15 min improving with the stupid robot arm.
Hey…I saw this movie recently. Check out my amateur review http://edward2962-welluh.blogspot.com
Then go see it before Hollywood wrecks it.
I have heard many, MANY good things about this film. I do want to check it out soon.
J.
The girl with the dragon tattoo is pure fiction, Scandinavia doesn’t have crime, it’s a land of innocents
🙂
LOEB FLASH!
This just in:
GAMMA POWERED MAGUFFIN known as RULK, is GEN. ROSS
Loeb must be broken…I will break him
END LOEB FLASH you may now drink the Kool-Aid
As in the last Open Thread I will call BULLSHIT on this. Fucking Jepf Loeb and his fucking shitty comics. They are killing the industry…and my sanity. This makes no sense!!! Ross was killed buy Rulk. Rulk and Ross have been seen in the same panel together multiple times.
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
J.
Three words
Life
Model
Decoys
I so hate Loeb
We gotta have another Golden Loeb Awards!
Life Model Decoys. More like Lick My Dick!!!! Fucking Loeb.
J.
Does that mean you don’t like Hulk Captain America, Hulk Spiderman, and Hulk Thor? Because those are pretty deep and cerebral characters.
Jose’s first and last day as a Marvel editor…
NICK FURY: He didn’t die but he cost S.H.I.E.L.D.* another L.M.D.**!!!
*Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate
**Lick My Dick
Spoiler, next time? Maybe?
We spoiled this in the last thread. It’s been 3 days. Tough titty said the kitty. Just saying.
J.
Yeah, and I skipped over it in the last thread because you had a spoiler warning. Just saying.
This is for you ballsack…and is from the bottom of my cold, dead heart.
J.
Speaking of Cher, did you hear that Ron Zimmerman, the guy who introduced us to the newly gay Rawhide Kid, is dating her?
J.
I was flipping channels in my car today and they mentioned it on Howard Stern. I think the only reason he even got those jobs at Marvel is due to the fact that he’s a friend of Stern’s and JoeyQ is a Stern fan.
but the milks still good
Holy shit! I think I know what the next CCW ongoing after Bat-mang is gonna be!
Mannnnnnnnnn i really wish guys like Castlevaniaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, as of 2010, the world has run out of good shit.
Well Mikey theres always women, they make the world go round
My girlfriend laughs at my love of comics/games/anime/sci-fi flicks… but yeah she rocks ^_^
Hey that is all that matters
Super Castlevania IV was the fucking shit though. Had one of the BEST video game soundtracks EVAR!!!!!! One of the very few games I downloaded to my Wii. I also downloaded two Turbographix 16 games. If you can guess what they are I will send you a prize. 🙂
J.
Ninja Spirit, andddd Raiden?
Also, yeah as time went by a few good Castlevania games came and went but after that bullshit 64 one, man they started to really suck… That Playstation one however was really great. Probably the last good one.
Nope…Blazing Lasers and Devil’s Crush. Close though. 😛
I just replayed Symphony of the Night a couple of months ago. I think it was he last good one too.
J.
Yeah that really was so much fun. A huge step up for PS games..
But man, Castlavania COULD make a great movie…
Splatterhouse and Bonk?
This video just ruined my life. I refuse to believe it……
Ut-oh.
Wow.
J.
J.
I just read The Unwritten #5 (been catching up on my reading) and man, oh, man! That was one of the best comic books I’ve read in a long while.
Was that the Whale issue?
J.
Yes sir. Rudyard Kipling’s rise and fall.
That was a great issue. That series continues to impress me with every issue up to and including the one that was released this week. The title is just amazing.
J.
It was masterful how it blended in the life of Kipling and the subplots from the series at large. I’d have to say I think it’s one of the best comics on the market.
I think I have to agree with you on that.
J.
Now if only the Umbrella Academy would come back with a volume 3, I could die a pleased pauper.
I do believe that volume 3 is due to begin sometime before the end of the year. Fingers crossed.
J.
Sweet!
The first two volumes were brillant. Who would have thought that the My Chemical Romance guy could write.
“Who would have thought that the My Chemical Romance guy could write?”
Not me. I am just as surprised as you are. But it’s damn good, isn’t it?
J.
It’s great. Plus, Gabriel Ba’s art elevates anything! That dude is kicking ass.
I agree as well. the series never fails to impress me. So far issue 11 has been my favorite.
Just picked up the first trade of The Unwritten yesterday, really excited to read it after hearing so many good things.
Also has anybody ever read the Nobody by Jeff Lemire?
I didn’t know a Unwritten trade had come out yet. Good to know
I have read it, It isn’t as good as Essex County or Sweet Tooth, but it is still Lemire doing awesome work with a small town feel.
As for unwritten, I love that book.
If any of you are fans of good sci-fi and/or genre television in general and haven’t been watching Fringe you are really, really missing out. I just finished watching yesterday’s episode and it was awesome.
J.
I haven’t watched it yet but I will be watching the new Doctor Who and Fringe tonight.
J.
J.
Is that Robocop ad real? The one I posted is just a great looking “fake” 80’s toy ad for one of the new characters in Toy Story 3.
Oh, it is real my friend. Just like this one.
J.
Boy those Japanese love robots of any kind. I’ve seen that commercial before but I just noticed that it seemed to have music from City Slickers playing in the background.
Who knew RoboCop was into fried chicken! Hah!
They are selling acid flashbacks right?
Cause I’m almost fresh out.
That’s the funny thing about Japanese commercials, you can never tell what they are about. And the doubt Nike Cage knows what it is about either, just as long as the check clears.
Rather than feel embarassed for him, those commercials make me like Cage even more. LOL!
WTF is wrong with Nic Cage!?
Seriously…
lol that is a very good question.
this looks awsome! even better then the dark knight.
Perhaps not better than TDK (too soon to tell, obviously), but it looks very damn good nonetheless.
You should compare the movie posters the are should be in swipe file on bleedingcool.
3. Unicron.
The twin robots are not going to be in the next movie. They announced that already.
J.
Or maybe they’ll be different twins.
http://www.leftlanenews.com/chevrolet-spark-transformers-3.html
J.
I won’t speak of “him” or his “movies” again.
He he…thanks.
J.
J.
Best lyrics ever
That was my point too, Transformers was about robots shooting lasers at each other. If that isn’t entertaining enough to carry a Transformers movie I don’t want to see it…
I wasn’t trying to mock you Rob F. Sorry if I made it seem that way.
No not at all, I was agreeing with your point that adding a human element to Transformers is crap. They are robots for crying out loud.
This is what i consider the Human Element.
been reading spoilers for the end of seige and the sentry dieing.
i swear to god. if the sentry returns mixed with the symbiot carnage(who he threw into the sun in NA) i am gonna finally blow up bendis’ bald fucking mansion.
i could totally see them do this to.
what is it with people being thrown into the sun now days??
Whoa, vegedge…I didn’t even think about that. That is SO going to happen and when it does I will blame you. 🙂
J.
i hope tommy bre or joey quasada see this.
posting on comic message boards, its how i am gonna break into the biz.
then Im gonna poison the fuck out of the punch at the next avengers brain storm.
Meanwhile, Ares dismembered corpse is still rotting somewhere in the wreckage of Asgard. =)
haha lol but hopefully bendis is gonna bring his a game for writing the regular avengers again no dark or mighty and for some reasom they still need to have a new avengers team which is essentialy luke cage and friends but this time with the thing
Winnie Cooper still has it.

She is still a hottie, but I guess being a math nerd doesn’t pay like it use to if she is posing for Maxium after all of these years..
oh yeah i remember when i was asked to do my maxim cover shoot but i wouldn’t do it because there was too much politics involved.
…and the dark lords of Kuublah Khan descend upon the forces of Geoff…
I think I’m gonna do a Conan style Epic about the fall of Geoff Johns!
Yes Smarty we all need too chill
I loved Kuublah Khan as a kid! He sprayed water out of his mouth.
Hah!
I had that also, good times…
What’s the dude with the long neck?
Mekaneck!
It may not be as “cool” years later as some still feel G.I. Joe & Transformers are, but Masters Of The Universe will always be my favorite toyline and one of my favorite franchises of all time. As a matter of fact, I’m dressed as She-Ra right now.
I heart this rant. 🙂
J.
Which one? I’ve switched subjects with each post. LOL!
The long Marvel one.
J.
We should do a thread one day called “Scrantz”
Where we all get too rant about random stuff
I think when we grew up was the golden age of toys!
Damn I remember that!
Yeah kids today are missing out, what they got Pokemon?
Even Go-Bots was cool
I liked these.
J.
The 80s Ruled!
Tranzor Z and Spectreman
Two underrated shows, I kinda want a movie based on them
I wish more people watched the Masters Of The Universe revamp that was done.
J.
The downfall started with the BRATZ dolls and Pokemon.
Bratz made lil’girls vapid whores and Pokemon made lil’boys into drug fiends!
All Yu-Gi-Oh had to do was come in and land the death blow
Yeah and add in the Hannah Montana and that douchie Jonas brothers show that they’re watching and by the time we get old are in charge of everything the planet is simply doomed.
It suuuure is.
J.
dude, pokemon is sweet, no lie, im being 100% sincere.
literally all a woman has to do for me to want to marry her is have a passing knowledge of pokemon or comics.
I had a girl ask me one time if “I wanted to stick my Raichu in her Squirtle” and I immediately fell in love with her.
J.
all the good ones are gay, taken, or 12.
You have got to be kidding me Manconda, Fucking Hilarious.
ha ha ha ha that’s so funny. best line I’ve heard today.
Only half the kids are doing meth and having sex. The other half is playing on their Playstation and eating McDonalds.
Your analysis misses the complete overlap, i.e. the meth doing, sex having, playstation playing and mcdonalds eating kids these days. A large portion of which, studies have shown, perform all these activities all at the same time.
I am glad that you pointed out that fact because I was just about to and it now saves me the time of typing out that comment.
J.
Has anyone ever read Miracleman? I picked issues 2 and 3 and I thought they were Awesome.
Do you mean the 80’s Alan Moore story or the new thing Marvel’s coming out with?
the alan moore ones.
Yes indeed, but F*ck the Sentry ‘cuz whatever know FEAR BURNS AT THE MAN-THINGS TOUCH!!!
Sentry’s a puss.Actually, I got something to add about that..
But as far as the rest of Steve Gerber’s story goes…
I listened to Bendis talk about the Sentry on Word Balloon and he said this was always the plan for the Sentry.I think he was trying to repeat the Wanda/House of M storyline.Powerful yet sad and hero goes out of control, ends in tragedy. But this one backfired cause NO ONE LIKED HIS DEPICTION OF SENTRY.All the kids are like,”Sentry’s dead,GOOD!”
According to Alan Moore he says its okay for Marvel to reprint his MarvelMan stories as long as Marvel doesent put Alan Moore’s name in promotion.
Heres the story
http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2009/09/alan-moore-gives-blessing-to-miracleman-reprints/
Isn’t the whole point that Tony Stark is no longer making weapons for the military? After all, he “privatized world peace.”
Didn’t Morello also lend his name and likeness to Guitar Hero, the largest US military psych-ops in history?
Dude,Guitar Hero is totally controlled by the Illuminati, and not that Bendis thing from a few years ago,the REAL one.Just check out the symbols on the logo!
If you’re interested in seeing Illuminati influence in pop culture, check out this site. http://vigilantcitizen.com/
You’ll never look at Jay-Z, Madonna, Beyonce, or Lady Gaga the same way again.
I’d prefer not to have to look at Jay-Z, Madonna, Beyonce, or Lady Gaga ever again.
Ok, maybe Beyonce, but fuck the others.
hey did you know kiss stands for knights in satans services….
this is just more people reading into bullshit. these auto tune junkies are not secretly occult masters. they are trying to be abnormal because thats in right now. or they watched national treasure to many times. one time is to many times.
You’ve passed the test. Welcome to the Illuminati®.
Thursday’s is spaghetti dinner night, bring your own fork.
Dude, don’t be so naive. That’s just what the Illuminati creators of Rock Band want you to believe.
Rock Band will crush Guitar Hero in the coming revolution!
J.
Ya, I’ll try. Maybe I’ll write something on it next week when I get time.
J.
Very interesting read.

J.
Somewhere David Duke is smiling…
and Jesse James’ mistress
I love this David Duke fill-in the blank game. OK, let me give it a shot… with a dildo on fire up his butt.
But the “new” face of Firestrom is white. Just saying.
J.
They could always make Lois Lane black again.
I already said this in the last Open Thread that someone posted that cover in, but Lois looks hotter black.
she was smokin as a sister
Of course it’s white. Isn’t black face a bad thing?
“Thank you ladies & gentlemen, I’m here all week!”
Hmmm…interesting.
J.

It’s pretty brutal.
i got the end of Y the last man, and when i read the last concrete trade.
also whenever i go to a shop on wednsdays and see the red hulk.
Boring, tired jokes bring a tear to my eye. Is that you Dane Cook?
J.
Call me ugly, insult my mother, give me herpes, and set my house on fire… I could take any of that. But don’t call me Dane Cook. That’s pretty low.
He he…you’re right. That was pretty uncalled for. My apologies.
J.
I’m watching Protector right now and it is already better than that piece of shit Kick Ass because Kat Dennings is in it.
J.
Is that like Defendor?
Fuck…that’s what I meant. I am watching Defendor. I should probably stop drinking already. My bad.
Protector is a Tony Jaa flick.
J.
I know a lot of people who think she’s ugly but I find something so sexy about her.
I agree with this 100%. Also, a lot of people are fucking idiots.
J.
I thinks it’s something like one fourth of all Americans are retarded.
“thinks” brain fart 🙂
Ugly? I wouldn’t put her in my top ten list of hotties, but she’s definitely a good looking dame.
I just love that she’s all natural curves(even her lips) without venturing into “Precious” territory.
Her lips belong on a much bigger head. Or a Koi Carp
look, i wouldnt throw her out of bed, but i wouldnt cross the street for her either. she always looks kinda moist to me. clammy even.
What does this even mean?
J.
she looks like a fish. and probably smells like one too 😛
I LOVE PROTECTOR! My fav Tony Jaa movie 🙂
Did anyone see Robin Hood?
Not yet. Will try to next week.
haven’t seen it but everyone i know who has has said it’s either shitty or just meh
I’m going to make an effort to see it this week.
Iron man apparently beat it in sales this weekend at the box office. I don’t know I may see it, but nothing about the trailer wows me or anything.
J.
Agreed
Another super hero movie much better than kick ass
I almost forgot about that.
It kills me that all of these movies that look so good like “Special” & “Defendor” go direct to video while “The Tooth Fairy” & “The Back Up Plan” get wide theatrical releases.
agreed, i feel both of those movies had a way better chance of commercial success than any movie that has Jennifer Lopez in it but alas the movie companies aren’t willing to take a risk most the time
Millar said on his forum boards he walked out of Shutter Island, so clearly he has bad taste in movies.
Yeah I’ll check this out after I finish my epic long sega/playstation (aka games of the 90’s) marathon!
I still need to finish Symphony of the Nite and then its on to Street Fighter 2, The Punisher/Nick Fury game and Splatterhouse..
millar has the ability to walk upright?
i sat behind mark millar at shutter island. after he wrote down the plot and every thing original about the concept of that movie in a notebook, he shouted “GOT IT!” and ran out as fast as he could.
J.
He he…touché my good man.
J.
That’s my next buy
Woody Harrelson has been knocking out some great movies lately.
If you guys say it’s worth viewing it’s a done deal
I liked this movie too. Woody’s on a roll.
I am now watching Uncertainty starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Look’s like it’s “What if Sliding Doors had action in it?” with an artsy feel to it. Just started it though so no real opinion yet.
J.
Isn’t he going to be in Christopher Nolan’s Inception? Didn’t you say awhile back he would probably be good playing a character in another Nolan film series where at present that role is vacant if you get my meaning. 🙂
Yes he is and yes I did. 🙂
J.
Interesting
Indeed it is.
J.
No CCW chat this weekend?
or did i miss it earlier today?
No you didn’t miss it. Maybe tomorrow.
J.
J.
Good Question, If he does go the route of just sticking with creator owned books then I would like to see what he could do with a writer like Brian K. Vaughan.
Now that Lost is done I really hope Vaughn does some more comic work. Him and Murphy working together would be awesome.
J.
Indeed it is. hehe
doctor who thread this week?!
lat week i understand vampires of venice sucked. but amy’s choice was pretty awesome.
Ya, sorry. I didn’t have time to put one together and I’m on my way to work now. I’ll put one up next week for sure.
J.
have you been watching the last two?
some night of the living dead stuff going on in the last one
Ya, I’m all caught up. Watched Amy’s Choice last night. I liked it.
J.
So I had a dream last nite I was at the store and I was about to buy the Manga Biomega and some dude came up and hijacked every copy….
Damn… my life is so empty >>
Well, at least it was just a dream. That is pretty much what it like for me everyday in reality.
J.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomega_%28manga%29
still, I saw vol 2 at my manga store yesterday, looks sick..
We carry that here. Vol 2 just came out this week. I think that that is the same artist who did the Wolverine: Snikt mini a while ago.
J.
I’ve just ordered volume 1 from Amazon along with the first 2 volumes ov Gantz, I’ll let you know what I think.
Cool. I think the new volume of Gantz comes out this week. I’m looking forward to that.
J.
ALSO new 20th Century Boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!
J.
Did something happen to the Atom?
SPOILERS
The Ryan Choi Atom got killed. There were so many other reasons though why that comic was terrible.
Brightest Day my ass. Looks like it’s business as usual in the Titan books.
J.
Really? That’s a shock value offing if ever. CBR’s review said it was one of the worst comics ever as well, and for THOSE guys to say something sucked it has to be fuckin’ toliet paper.
Wow. CBR hated it too? I’ll have to check that out later.
Shock avlue offings are mandatory in Teen Titans and Titans every few months.
J.
DC should just cancel Teen Titans and wait till a creator actually has a good idea for them. Titans should go as well, that is like a “non-team”.
Brilliant, I won’t get that comic until about 3 weeks from now. Oh the anticipation!
yes, yes they should. It seems like its been running on fumes for a while. I dropped it a long time ago.
Who the hell would want to be in the Teen Titans? Doesn’t a team member die in every other issue?
Child Services should get involved in the well being of those youngsters.
I just saw that on another website about 10 minutes ago. It sucks. poor thing, cancer is a bitch and a half.
This was my favorite of his. The 80’s awesomeness of this video is unprecedented 🙂
People like Dio, Maiden, Metallica could sell records by word of mouth because of their quality. MTV has never really been about music.
I meant to say “they HAVEN’T been about showing videos”…
I can only really comment about MTV Europe but they stopped showing videos around 97/98. Shows like Party Zone, Headbangers Ball, Ray Cokes Most Wanted were cancelled plus most of the older (and hotter) VJ’s like Kristiane Backer and Marijne van der Vlugt were fired.
That’s pretty close to how it went in the States. Let’s face it,MTV was ALWAYS a corporate entity, but the mid-90’s was the last time you could pretend it was fun.
My biggest fantasy as a teen was that if this song somehow made it into their rotation.
Ride the tiger you can see his stripes but you know there clean!
-Hell is having one crazy party tonight. RIP DIO
Wow,I’m kinda shocked about Ronnie only ‘cuz the last thing I heard his cancer was in remission. We lost Lena Horne this week too. RIP both.
Not to mention Frank Frazetta on Monday.
J.
Rest in Peace beautiful Lena
3 icons gone in one week
Don’t know if any of you Doctor Who fans have seen this so I will just leave it here and slowly walk away.

J.
Yes she does.
301…man, I always wanted to do that somewhere 🙂
Nice, that means I was the EPIC 300
And yet you did not say: This….is……..SPARTA!!!!
That’s probably a good thing. Besides being, imo, a bad movie, “300” brought us Gerard Butler and led Frank Miller to direct The Spirit.
I loved 300.
One persons’ feast is anoter ones’ famine, I guess.
Didn’t see the Spirit, but I know what you mean.
This is 5 minutes of my life I’ll never get back…
That’s why God created multi-tasking.
Wow, he acts like someone just accused him of murder. GOD FORBID A COMIC BOOK!
Limbaugh grew up in the 50’s, there’s a good chance he thinks someone just did accuse him of murder.
In fact, Wertham died shortly after the release of Scanners; he didn’t stand a chance.
Hrrrrrmmmmmm…I have used this clip many times in the past. I don’t know if I like you using it or not.
J.
Fair use or should I continue?
J.
Finally, NBC canceled the abysmal Heroes.
Yes, finally, the last nail in the coffin to the abortion Jeph Loeb helped raise. Good riddance.
J.
J.
Agreed. It was a piece of crap show. I quit during the first season. Total snoozer.
I find it difficult to watch shows with “beautiful people,” where everyone is in perfect shape and looks like a supermodel. That alone put me off the show. Plus it was just extremely slow.
Agree 100%.
Plus, I felt like it was X-Men without anything that makes the X-Men interesting.
Ding Dong the witch is dead….
Anyone see the news about Shia Lebouf? First he apologized for the piece of crap that Transformers 2 was, and now he’s apologizing for Indiana Jones as well.
http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/05/16/shia-labeouf-on-indiana-jones-4-i-dropped-the-ball-on-the-legacy/
Never thought I’d say this, but I suddenly have newfound respect for Lebouf.
Oh no, it was most definitely deserving of an apology. I wish Spielberg would follow suit.
Holy shit! A new episode of CCW TV. You’re welcome fellow insomniacs.
J.
This may have come up around the time of “Planet Hulk” but, considering the idea of Hulk in sandals was supposedly JoeyQ’s idea, I wonder if he ever saw this?
I remember seeing ads for this storyline, but I never read it.
Sandal use is a total Dead Sea Scrolls rip off.
I just finished watching this flick, it was actually really good. Jason Ritter is great.
I featured this on a Indie Flick Friday post a while ago. I really liked this movie.
J.
I’d recommend him in Good Dick and The Education of Charlie Banks.
Joe Quesada, if you believe that the marriage doesn’t allow for solid Spider-Man stories…look at Kraven’s Last Hunt.
Thought you’d like that Jose.
I used to read it as a kid.
http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/05/13/2010-05-13_little_orphan_gonnie_from_the_daily_news.html
And Jose & I are gay for liking Josie And The Pussycats? LOL!
Hey, I liked it too. But top five greatest comic book movie of all time? That’s where we part ways.
I’m just fucking with you. If it still ran in the Chicago Tribune, I’m sure I’d check out Annie.
I didn’t watch it yet, but I heard that Judy Greer was on another CBS Monday Night sitcom tonight; “How I Met Your Mother”.
WHAT!? Now I have to watch yet another terrible CBS “comedy”. Sigh. The things I do to get my Judy Greer fix.
Thanks for the heads up btw.
J.
If she shows up on Two And A Half Men and that David Spade show, I’m not going to even tell you. I can’t watch those 2 at all.
She was already on a couple of episodes of 2 and a half men.
J.
I actually forgot about that, but I’m surprised that you know that. Please don’t tell me you’re a fan of that show.
I have never watched that show and never will. I only know that because I was just on her IMDB page.
J.
