  1. cballsack says:

Whoa, I had no idea there were so many Green Hornet books. That’s kinda crazy.

  2. generaldark says:

im kind of excited to get my comics tommorow. i usually alwaise have a hard time sleeping on teusdays. thanks for giving me something to settle down to πŸ™‚ now i got to try to sleep for tommorow πŸ˜€

  3. kurumais says:

what exactly did pat lee do that was great that made him a big name? i am not an x fan and i wasnt an early image fan wasnt he one of those guys?

    thanks

  4. Insideman says:

Guys, new to the blog (I’ve been lurking for about a week or so) but I’ve been watching your videos ever since they started showing on Dreamland Comics website.

Love to listen to you guys discuss stuff WHILE I am making my weekly order. I literally go, “Uh, maybe I won’t get that.” Or I think, “Hey, maybe I WILL get that!” I buy a TON of trades every week– with a few comics here and there.

Anyway, this was a tough subject for this vid discussion. But a BIG BALLS award to both of you. Glad you wanted to bring it up, Jose. I think Pat Lee is SCUM. Big ups for Elliott staying in the frame for the whole discussion too… Especially as you kept nailing it, Jose.

You also couldn’t be more right about the Green Hornet deluge. I do think I read (Bleeding Cool I think) that Dynamite was making good on the Dabel Bros. back pay owed to creators and the like. (Would love to see a final tally on that to see if that claim really holds true.)

Hell, Avatar is letting Brian Pulido do yet another Lady Death. Another Great American Comeback Story.

Like I said, Big Fan. Keep it up!

    • Welcome to the blog Insideman. And thanks for the kind words.

      Cheers.

      J.

      • Locusmortis says:

Heh, Dynamite just bought the rest of the Chaos comics characters.

I used to like Dynamite when they had the Battlestar Galactica franchise and Mike Oeming was writing the Red Sonja ongoing. Some of their recent announcements are pretty shady though.

  5. IronMuskrat says:

Usually when you see an industry bringing back the same people over and over again, despite the fact they have shown themselves to be of less than stellar character, it’s a sign of stagnation in the industry and companies playing it safe.

Dynamite is trying to grow their company and one way to do that quickly is bringing in known talent like Pat Lee, sure the guy is shady little shit, that has screwed over people in the past, but he does have an established body of work and Dynamite knows he can jump right in and produce a certain level of work right from the start with little upkeep.

It’s the same thing as NFL teams that seem to hire the same old, tired coaches that never seem to produce winning teams, but they are easy picks because they do know how to run a pro team with a certain level of professional effectiveness. An old timer that can keep a team rolling along until hopefully someone better comes along at some point.

Same deal with Dynamite, Pat Lee long term probably won’t work out for them, but short term he will get a couple of books out there for Dynamite until they can bring up some younger talent.

    IM

  6. So we get a dozen fucking Green Hornet books, even Kato has TWO series. Yet, poor Tonto still can’t get his own title.. Shame, shame, shame.

  7. Insideman says:

A Tonto book would kick ass… As long as they could go the entire series without RAPING a woman.

  8. Insideman says:

IronMuskrat, I get where you are coming from completely.

Using your NFL analogy, two words will sum up the Pat Lee hiring for me:

    “Michael Vick”.

  9. Deemar says:

I wanna comment on Dynamite, but outta respect for E, I’m keeping my mouth shut on this one.

  10. Insideman says:

My comments are meant as no disrespect for Dynamite. I just totally agree with Jose on this.

To beat the cliche, you can only lay down with so many dogs before you get up with fleas.

Dynamite is a perfectly fine comic company– better than lots. They are just treading a fine line here. Remains to be seen if Jose’s opinion on the new Pat Lee series will be the norm… Or if Lee timed his “overseas hiatus” just perfectly– and 5 years was enough time to make the average reader either forgive, forget or not give a shit.

  11. SMARTASS8 says:

I’m running out of companies I can buy from.

    * Marvel: It started because I thought they were ruining the Universe I grew up loving but I kept giving them “second chances”. After seeing & hearing so many vile, unprofessional, and just down right mean things that JoeyQ & Tom Brevoort have done & said, Marvel isn’t getting a penny of my money until those motherfuckers quit or, hopefully, are fired. I hope Disney cleans house & soon.

    * Wizard: Their magazines have been shit for years, but their dirty dealings with their employees, their customers, and convention competition have left me refusing to buy their rags even for bathroom reading.

    * Dynamite: I haven’t been a fan of most of their products that I’ve read, find the fact that they put out more variants than IDW, Marvel, & DC combined sickening, and have felt some of Nick Barrucci’s comments & dealings to be quite sleazy & underhanded(especially the way he publicly dealt with Moonstone & The Phantom license). That has kept me away from their company for the most part. I bought the first issues Of Wagner’s Green Hornet(great) and Smith’s Green Hornet(OK) but refuse to buy anymore after I heard about their hiring of Pat Lee on BleedingCool.

    * Boom: I just find Mark Waid to be an asshole who I don’t want to give any of my money to. It doesn’t hurt that I haven’t been a fan of any book of his that I’ve read in the past.

For now, I guess DC, Dark Horse, IDW, Image, Archie, and whatever other tiny companies are out there will have to do.

    • Mike F says:

      Buy Manga Smartass.

You’ll rarely be disappointed if you go with legendary writers like Hiroya Oku, Naoki Urasawa, Yukito Kishiro, Katsuhiro Otomo, Oh! Great (aka: Ōgure Ito ), CLAMP, and Tsugumi Ohba πŸ™‚

      • SMARTASS8 says:

I’ve read some of it over the years, but I’d prefer to read something that was written in my language and based on my culture. Not becuase I’m some American elitist(I’d have no problem living in Canada or England) but often things are either lost in the translation or you need to know a lot about a culture in order to pick up on “inside” jokes. I’m a little nervous learning more about a culture where used panties are sold in vending machines, tenticle & rape porn is OK but gentalia has to be censored, and any woman riding a train is seconds away from being molested.

        • I liked BOOM’s adaptation of “Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep”. But I don’t really like most of their stuff.

I wrote a review of Irredeemable #1, and they didn’t like it too much. I actually got an e-mail from a PR.

          • If you ever get a chance read “Dingo”. I really, really liked that book.

            J.

            • I’ll check it out. Actually, I didn’t mind Nola. I thought that was okay but I only read the first two issues.

              • I read all of Nola and thought that was good too. If the CCW Awards were held today I would nominate Dingo for best mini-series of the year….but the year still has a long way to go so whether or not that changes we will see.

                J.

            • SMARTASS8 says:

You mentioned Dingo to me one other time. What is it about? I’m assuming it isn’t about a wild dog in Australia.

              • He he..no. It’s kind of a modern take on Greek mythology. We reviewed the first issue on CCW TV. And here, just so you don;t have to go looking for it:

                J.

                • SMARTASS8 says:

Sounds cool! I won’t budge on my Marvel, Dynamite, and Wizard bannings, but since my reason for not buying Boom comics is just a childish dislike for Waid, I might check this book out next week. Like Elliott, I’m a huge animal lover.

Btw, did Elliott say he works at an animal shelter? I figured he was a full time writer. Since I’m one of the many laid off people in this country(I’m a downsized manager for that damn water you sometimes drink in you videos Jose. LOL!), I’ve been looking into working with animals(either as a career or at least volunteer).

                  • Elliott is not in fact a full time writer. He works at times with animals and most times with underprivileged youth.

I myself was a downsized manager at a comic shop I worked at for over 10 years Smartass. I know the feeling unfortunately.

                    J.

                    • SMARTASS8 says:

Damn! Elliott seems like a saint. Not only is he helping out animals & kids, he’s working for those bastards at Dynamite without saying one negative word. LOL!

I think my college degree was a waste of money. Not only does it seem I’m either overqualified or underqualified for most things out there, I really hated my previous line of work. With my low tolerance for bullshit, I’m not exactly built for sales. I’m thinking I might get back into retail(I worked at Jewel for almost 9 years during high school & college).

If you don’t mind me asking, how long have you worked at Dreamland? I just thought when you mentioned that you’ve worked as a comic retailer for almost 20 years, it was all at Dreamland.

                    • I used to work for Dreamland’s owner’s for about a year or so before I went to work for their competition (which then lasted over 10 years). After I was let go they were nice enough to let me come back and help them out.

Out of my 17+ years in the retail industry I have worked for Dreamland 4 of them.

                      J.

  12. mitiators says:

Thanks for the heads up on Pat Lee. I had no idea. Jokers like that (and Nick Simmons) need to be called on shit like that. That’s why I watch your show. I get real information. And cussing.

  13. Iqy says:

Wow, I’m only got intrested in the going ons in the comic book industry 2 years ago and I’m really shocked at the amount of shady people in the industry past and present. The only reason I think they would get pat lee is any publicity is good publicity.
Also I wonder there aren’t many young writers, people call few up and coming writers and then I find out 40 or so.

    • Locusmortis says:

From Donenfeld and Leibowitz at National/DC and Martin Goodman at Timely/Marvel right up to Pat Lee at Dreamwave and Mark Alessi of Crossgen the comics industry has always been full of shysters and shady types πŸ˜‰

  14. Mike F says:

    Best video yet guys.

Most profound rage I’ve seen thus far.

  15. haha classic guys it would have been hilarious if elliot got fired because of you then again no more show if it happened

  16. Green Griffin says:

I see the artist for GH: Year becoming the next Michael Lark and getting picked up by Marvel but man i would love to see him draw a batman story.

and Yes Gh: Year One is the best GH book at the moment, GH Strikes wasn’t bad either, good art.

  17. Insideman says:

Jose must be borderline prophetic… Now Dynamite has apparently bought the rights to all the old Chaos Comic characters (except Lady Death).

It’s the “SCREW YOU” 90’s all over again.

I thought the Michael Vick comparison was apt because 1) it continued the NFL analogy and 2) Vick is virtually a worldwide pariah– yet the Eagles have no qualms about gainfully employing the bastard in hopes of winning more games.

In that sense, it is no different than the supposed economic impetus behind Dynamite’s employing a bastard like Pat Lee to draw anything… but a warm bath.

  18. vegedge says:

now elliot needs to let us know if his editors every yelled at him about this

  19. Locusmortis says:

Just read Titans: Villains for Hire “Special”, that was one of the most offensive comics I’ve read in a long long time. Shame on you DC

    • Heh…then you will probably like the review we did for it. It was so offensive to us we based Last Rants around it.

      J.

      • SMARTASS8 says:

Was it just the brutal killing of Ryan Choi or did you like his book by Gail Simone as well? I wouldn’t have liked this special to begin with, but I disliked it even more since I happened to like Ryan Choi. I don’t understand why he couldn’t either go by a different name or join Ray Palmer’s supporting cast(I’m sure they’ll give Palmer a shot again as a mini or ongoing series if Lemire’s 1-shot sells well.

        • I liked the Ryan Choi Atom book. My problem with this Titans Special is that it was so offensive on so many levels. The only REASON this special existed was to kill Choi…for $5. That’s it. This sounds like a Marvel tactic and DC should be fucking ashamed of themselves for publishing this comic.

Every week I am finding myself disliking DC more and more. It’s shit like this that will make me stop buying any of their comics…not to mention their newly announced price increases.

          J.

          • SMARTASS8 says:

            Did you see this?

            http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=26207

What disgusts me is that DC thought people would enjoy this book so much, they made it a special as opposed to just a regular issue of The Titans series. While DC is definitely not innocent when it comes to extreme violence, a book starring such depraved villains is the type of nihilism that belongs at Marvel. I still think DC has a long ways to go before they earn as much of my hate as I have reserved for JoeyQ’s Marvel, but they definitely have as much, if not more, deaths delivered on a regular basis.

            • No, I didn’t see this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

              J.

              • Locusmortis says:

I don’t know where to really start with how offensive this was, I don’t think I’ve been as pissed off at a comic since Identity Crisis. We’re used to Bendis and Millar pulling shit like this but we know thats because the editors at Marvel are scared to piss them off, I get the feeling that the editors at DC actively conspired with the “writer” to see how far they could push the offensiveness in this book.

Deathstroke could have killed the Atom with one shot from a sniper rifle. This book wasn’t just about the killing of Ryan Choi, it was about the psychological and physical brutalisation and humiliation of a hero, it was about the ritualising and fetishizing of murder of a hero. It was more like a initiation ceremony where the participants torture and murder a helpless victim.

This offensive mess of a book was put out to show not only how badass a character Deathstroke is (which we fucking already know, we don’t need forty pages of torture porn to prove it) it was to show how badass the “writer” is and how badass a company DC is. Then to top it off, they wanted their “women in refrigerators” moment so they had the “minority in a matchbox” moment. Fuck you DC, for shame!

I haven’t found one person who liked this piece of shit, I hope the sales plummet on this thing and this book falls back down the toilet it emerged from. I cancelled Titans from my pull list, I hope more people do the same.

  20. IronMuskrat says:

Couldn’t have said it better Locusmortis!

and as the final insult in this whole deal, apparently no one at DC bother to tell or ask Gail Simone her opinion on kill off her character.

DC spreading the lack of respect to fans and artists alike.

    IM

    • SMARTASS8 says:

While I’m a fan of Gail Simone, Ryan Choi was created by Grant Morrison. While she developed him in his series, she left it before it even finished its brief run.

  21. Rob F says:

Ah Pat Lee…I’m sad to say that I purchased many a shitty Dreamwave comic…

  22. Guess what! Another Green Hornett book is coming our way!

    http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=26322

    wtf.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

      That’s in addition to:

      * Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet
      * Kevin Smith’s Kato
      * Green Hornet Year One
      * Kato Origins
      * Green Hornet Strikes
      * Green Hornet Golden Age Remastered

I think Dynamite is officially worse than Marvel/Avengers & DC/Batman.

      • Locusmortis says:

        And next there will be:

        Iron Green Hornet
        Dark Green Hornet
        Blackest Green Hornet
        Brightest Green Hornet
        Tonto and Kato Adventures
        Kato Does Laundry
        Gundam 00: Green Hornet Strikes

        and

Betty and Veronica and Green Hornet

  23. vegedge says:

    no way.
marvel over kills us with wolverine and deadpool worse.

they even throw wolverine on other comics covers. almost everycomic that month had wolverine on it.

    last month it was ironman.

thats worse. i dont wanna be buying my flash and see a steampunk batman or something on the cover.

    marvel ruins comics.

  24. Brett says:

Jose your completely right. Why hire dirtbags who bring down and have brought down the industry? These business look way too short term and screw themselves in the long run.
