  1. FYI:

Elliott decided not to use our normal mic because “the mic in the camera is just as good.”

As usual, he was fucking wrong. I will apologize for the terrible sound in this series of segments even though it was not my laziness that caused it. So, ya, enjoy…if you can.

    J.

    • phil says:

Actually I dug that wall of sound vibe y’all had goin’ on.

    • Luiz de Mello says:

I THINK it is because of the room + lack of sound treatment by the camera. The effect seems to be amplified inaudible echo that is recorded at a higher volume then becomes audible and noise when you playback the untreated record (I feel geek now). On your regular place you will probably fine, I think 😛

      • Locusmortis says:

Its like one of those Osama videos from the caves of Afghanistan except with a pair of nerds 😉

      • Yeah, the sound level is pretty high on this vid which is why you hear all the background noise like my dog walking in and out of the room. I’ll have them adjusted for the next segments.

        Elliott

        • SMARTASS8 says:

Just out of curiosity, what type of dog do you have?

I’ve only had one dog at a time my whole life, but I currently have a French Bulldog, an Akita, and a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Since I’m an only child, this is the closest I’ve ever felt to having brothers & sisters with these furry nuts running all over the place.

          • My dog is a mixed breed husky/shepherd. She looks like she might have a little bit of doberman in her too. She always likes to be next to me when I’m home, but with Jose sitting there and the camera stand set up she was too shy to come by and would just walk around the room. I also have 2 cats, one of which bumps the camera at one point during the recording.

            Elliott

            • SMARTASS8 says:

I haven’t had a mutt since I was in high school. I love them but every time I tried to adopt a dog from a shelter, they were so specific about your work schedule and how many times you brush your teeth, I felt it was easier to buy elsewhere. I’m happy that they try to weed out potentially cruel/inept animal owners, but considering I carry spiders outside in a Dixie cup rather than kill them, I’m hardly a risk to an animal’s wellbeing.

    • djsweet says:

That was the first thing i noticed J. Glad you are aware of that problem

  2. SMARTASS8 says:

I know Elliott stayed the loyal Bendis fan for a long time. Does he still consider himself that or was Siege the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back?

    • E says that he is a Bendis fan but the truth is he hasn’t bought any Bendis books for like a year. I think he got tired of me mocking him at the register about what he was buying. 🙂

He does go to other comic shops though so for all I know he is still buying Bendis comics. E just doesn’t do it in front of me.

      J.

      • SMARTASS8 says:

You said you traveled an hour to Elliott’s house. Do you live far away from Dreamland yourself or does Elliott have to travel an hour just to shop there? I had always figured the 2 of you lived in relatively the same area.

      • Deemar says:

That’s how I was with Loeb Hulk, the shame of buying that book forced me to go too another LCS just to buy it.

Then you guys convinced me to drop it.

Your my Dr. Drew and Dr. Phil guess whos who?

    • As Jose said, I haven’t bought a Bendis book in over a year. I never bought Dark Avengers and dropped his ‘new’ Avengers during Secret Invasion. The decompression was just killing me as a reader and as a consumer.

      Elliott

      • SMARTASS8 says:

I was a fan until Bendis killed me with Avengers:Disassembled. Granted, I continued to read his stuff on & off over the years, but I was always ready to hate it due to his drop in quality(or maybe because his writing a team book like Avengers made all of his flaws as a writer more apparent).

        • I liked Disassembled myself but lost interest when he took the focus off of Cap/Iron Man/Thor and made it Luke Cage and Co. Don’t get me wrong, I like Luke Cage, but I’ll read HEROES FOR HIRE for him.

          Elliott

          • SMARTASS8 says:

To be honest, I didn’t hate Disassembled as much as a lot of people did back then, but what he did with Hawkeye(this guy, who was never a killer & even left his own wife when she let her rapist fall to his death, was now shooting Skrulls in the head and turning himself into a kamikazi pilot) really pissed me off.

I agree with you about Luke Cage. I love the character but making him the New Avengers’ Cap, the baby daddy of one of Bendis’ characters, and a superhero with a predilection for anal sex killed a lot of that love. Just like Bendis’ treatment of Nick Fury and introduction of Maria Hill killed a lot of my love for S.H.I.E.L.D. I hope the next “popular” Marvel writer comes in and uses Maria Hill, Jessica Jones, and whatever other characters Bendis created as cannon fodder for some crossover. Much like Bendis does with everyone elses. Alpha Flight didn’t even deserve to be killed on panel?

            • Deemar says:

              Smarty…I am right behind ya!

I hope whomever is that future “Bendis” is fucks Bendis’ characters up

Although I like how he’s upped Luke Cage’s profile. That’s the one good thing he did. the only one

              • Insideman says:

                Deemar– You got it!

Whomever the “next Bendis” is WILL totally fuck Bendis’ characters up.

Karma ALWAYS comes around like it KNOWS ITS WAY HOME.

                • Deemar says:

I hope it’s Hickman who does the fucking of Bendis

                  • SMARTASS8 says:

It will have to be someone that hasn’t been tainted by JoeyQ. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere soon.

                    • Deemar says:

I thought it would be Dan Slott, but he’s beholden to Bendis’ also

                    • liquid R says:

maybe they will bring in geoff johns, he kill them off and half the marvel roster including steve rogers again.

                  • djsweet says:

I think the next big shake up will be a big name buy out. Bendis will be offered a but load of cash to defect to DC and Millar will get an offer too. In turn Robinson and Johns will come to Marvel. Morrison will continue to do his own thing at DC ignoring anything Bendis touches

  3. generaldark says:

wow bendis kills off 2 Gods?? i call bullshit!!!!

  4. MyComicLife says:

Hi guys awesome review as always.
hey do u guys think that maybe the delay of siege 4 was becoz of the new avengers finale. i might be wrong but i think that marvel wanted to release both these books (and including the dark avengers) together. im guessing the delay was becoz Bryan Hitch was just busy taking his time drawing his SPLASH pages.
But damn was siege a total waste of time….the only upside about it was Olivier Coipel’s art.
I cant wait for u guys to review avengers 1……man i browsed through that book and it was really disapointing…….even Romita’s work was bad in his standards.

  5. i was reading siege4 and before i picked it up i remember what elliot said about steve rogers director of shield and i was thinking oh god i hope not hen i read it and was like oh shit bendis can do whatever he wants and people like brubaker and fraction and slott and hickman have to pick up the pieces and try and make a good book that’s not fair man bendis is not king of marvel he’s is killing these good creators.

  6. MaximusRift says:

Doesn’t Bendis get away with this because he’s best buds with Quesada who also has done stupid changes in the Marvel U?

    • Deemar says:

He gets away with it, because he was at the right place at the right time of Marvel’s resurgence.

      It could have been anybody.

  7. Rob F says:

So let me get this straight…what was the rationale for the end of the 50 state initiative? Did they give one?

    • The President wanted Rogers to head up SHIELD (or whatever they are going to call it now) and Roger’s said he would if the U.S. got rid of the registation act which I guess in turn got rid of the Initiative. Mind you, half of this stuff wasn’t explained in the comic so I am assuming most of it.

      J.

      • Rob F says:

So the general public is just going to forget about their fervor for registration?

      • Deemar says:

        They should call Cap’s organization

        A.P.P.L.E.P.I.E.

        • I don’t think Cap is qualified to run shit. Bendis is forgetting that most of the general public (in the MU) voted for the Registration Act.

          • Rob F says:

Yeah…one of the lasting images of Cap from the Civil War is him getting held down by a bunch of cops…I’d like to see the PR spin on that one

            • SMARTASS8 says:

I just love how Cap’s been using a shield since the 40’s(I know! He was frozen for a large part of that time) but now, according to the Secret Avengers preview, using only his fists and, according to a cover of the upcoming Steve Rogers miniseries, a gun. I know Cap used guns in WW2(although Brubaker has really played that angle up more than there actually was), but he’s been basically the Superman of the Marvel Universe since Stan Lee brought him back in the 60’s(he was a boyscout who only killed as a last resort). I don’t like it that he’s now going to be portrayed as a fool who only goes into battle with his fists or a spy who shoots first & asks questions later.

            • Deemar says:

I think the general public still respects Cap, the registration act is what they want, but it’s not like Cap is some kinda terrorist he’s Cap!

              • liquid R says:

Bendis is the new god of marvel, I’m sure he made the public forget what Cap did, and that they even voted for the Registration Act.

                • SMARTASS8 says:

I think Bendis forgot himself. This guy can’t keep his own past stories straight much less Marvel’s continuity.

Also, if Bendis is a god, I’m an athiest.

                  • I don’t know. I tend to think the people of the Marvel U wouldn’t stand behind Cap. If news is twisted like it is in our world, Cap would still be recognized as a terroist along with the other anti-registration act heroes.

I think if anything, Tony Stark would be accepted back into the public eye.

                  • Luiz de Mello says:

If Bendis is God, I am a Satanist.

                  • Rob F says:

That’s what makes it tough, because the public reaction during Civil War made so much sense, in the real world people would want superheroes held accountable to their government. To me it’s just another example of Bendis throwing out an awesome story element so he can implement his own crappier one a la his abuse of the Thor universe created by JMS

                    • i thing that would have been cool would be nick fury back or dum dum dugan as top cop but cap has killed during war time it would be good to see steve rogers breaking down and trying to kill himself cause if was affected by reliving ww2 so bad he would take a lot longer to wear the flag and fight for his country but by 2012 steve rogers will be cap again the only real reason they are doing the heroic age is to bring the main avengers back for the movie in 2012.

                    • I think they should just let Bucky be Cap. Rodgers only came back because Disney took over and wanted to bring back status quo for the movies.

                    • SMARTASS8 says:

Then if that was why they brought Cap back, why did they bring Bucky back? It wasn’t like they was a huge demand to see him return.

I do have to disagree with you about Disney forcing a “status quo”. Not only do I think Marvel would have brought back Cap on their own in time for the upcoming movie(they always release a million mini-series to tie in with their movies as well as changing/adding characters to match the movie canon like Mystique’s temporary “movie look”, Spidey’s organic webshooters, and the recently created Mickey Rourke/Whiplash homage), I really don’t see any sign of Disney forcing their hand on Marvel. I’m not saying it will never happen(I hope they do since I doubt they can make things worse than I feel JoeyQ has), but I don’t think they’ve started making demands yet.

I also have to respectfully disagree with you about there only being one reason why Cap has returned. There are still a lot of people who either prefer Cap over Bucky or would like to see both of them alive. Bucky’s re-introductin may have been handled well(much better than Jason Todd’s; a character I actually liked), but I know that not every person who enjoyed that storyline automatically wanted Cap to retire for good.

                    • Edward2962 says:

I don’t see how overturning the registration act makes any sense. It’s not like you have a constitutional right to wear a mask and beat ppl up.And think of it this way ,if you became a PI or bail bondsman you’d need a licence, right? Why not for superheroes?I think that could be a unique and modern twist on the genre.
Anyway,I just hope that when Steve does became Cap again,it’s not some hackneyed story where Bucky dies again and Steve realizes once again that only he can bear the burden of Cap America.

  8. vegedge says:

    what a clusterfuck of horrible.

seige 4, new avengers finale(fuckyou.itsthesamebookcomingoutnextweek!)and sentry i tripped and fell into the sun.

    i wanna clobber bendis.

daredevil is the last marvel i read. they either cancelled the others or the series ended onits own.

shadowland please be good! and not just anthor jerk off fest with gods being torn apart and minoitity characters dying.

  9. MyComicLife says:

Atlas 1 was awesome….jeff parker has a really cool way in drawing you in to his story….i mean even though the book is your average 22 pages comic…..it just feels soooo rich in story, UNLIKE OTHER WRITERS..coughcough……ahem …..
By the way, is Jeff Parker going to write thunderbolts herioc age …if so…i guess it should be worth a read.

  10. Mike F says:

Marvel Can never be forgive for killing my favorite Villain in the most useless death.

  11. vegedge says:

why did they get rid of it only a few months ago and re launch it? is this marvels new thing? stopping books and then restarting it pretty much the same way

    • I have no idea. They canceled Agents of Atlas and then had a back-up running in Incredible Herc. Then Herc stops and now Atals has another book. I really do get it but I am glad Atlas is still around since it has been Marvel’s best book for years.

      J.

  12. mitiators says:

With Marvel’s high prices (and reprinted material) and now DC following in suit, it seems that the 90’s comic implosion is on the cusp of happening again. What are the foreign markets doing differently (Japan in particular) with their books that the American companies aren’t? Is it paper quality (newsprint vs glossy), book size (digest format, prestige, etc.), or something different altogether?
How do American comics need to evolve to stay alive?
Sorry about the text book Debbie Downer type of question, but I am compiling info for a thesis project I am working on about comics and I thought this would be a great place to start. You guys always do a great job breaking down major points about the comics industry.

    • manaconda! says:

i think the difference in japan is more than just a question of format and paper, in japan manga is part of the culture now, because of factors like content, there is a manga for eveyone, and distribution, everyone can get a manga.

american comics are still largely dominated by superhero stuff, which as much as i like it, it isnt universal. whereas in japan there are mangas that cover just about everything. sports, pirates, sci fi, erotica, slice of life.

in terms of distribution, well, manga is available everywhere, i think they can even get it in vending machines.

this isnt a question that can be answered easily by me, im not an expert by any stretch, but i think the factors i mentioned are valid. at least for japan, i dont know what the french are doing right but they should keep doing it.

  13. Venom829 says:

Are you guys going to review that terrible Titans one-shot that came out a little while ago?

  14. I have a question. It prolly has an obvious answer, but I skipped the Siege and don’t really care to look it up.

Okay, if Norman Osborn has complete control of the United States government and all the heroic community, then why would he want to attack Asgard??? You think the guy would be smarter than attacking the fuckin’ gods themsleves! Any Asgardian could take down the so called Avengers without even batting an eyelash.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

It was a mixture of the writers painting Osborn like Lex Luthor has been for several years(his not wanting aliens, gods, or superheroes running amok while his inteliigence is all that is needed for a perfect world), Loki manipulating Osborn in order to get Asgard to return to where he felt it belonged, Osborn growing more & more irrational due to his Goblin inspired insanity, and writers & editors not doing their job in order to have the Siege storyline make sense with Marvel history as well as its own continuity.

Or Bendis isn’t a very good writer. 8)

      • Luiz de Mello says:

Nay, it is not an OR case, it is an AND case 😛

        • Thanks SMART. I figured it was just Marvel’s attempt at making a “Lex Luthor” type character. Still, Stormin Norman will always just be a Green Goblin for me. I don’t care what Bendis says.

          😛

          • SMARTASS8 says:

Me too! I love Norman/Green Goblin. After Doctor Doom, he’s my favorite Marvel villain. I know a lot of people hate that he was brought back since it weakened the storyline in which he originally died(even though I don’t agree with that opinion when it comes to Barry Allen, Hal Jordan, or the 12 from Brightest Day, I might actually agree with that when it comes to Norman), I’m just happy to see him in new stories since he died before I was even born.

  15. agent42q says:

I’m glad that I didn’t cave and avoided seige, Marvel events always end up sucking no matter how strong they start.
