    Great Segment Elliott and Jose!

Looks like I will have to pick up Secret Avengers and give it a look. I had the same reservations about this new crop of Avengers books coming out, ti just looked like a big cash grab to me, with Spider-Man and Wolverine still being shoe-horned in on the teams.

I’ve always been a big fan of the Avengers going back in the day, but I have avoided them like the plague since Bendis took them over, I just hated everything he did to them. Now that Bendis has loosed his death-grip on the team and some other writers are getting a chance to write some Avenger stories it might be time for me to pick up a new book.

I was going to give that new Avengers Academy book a try, but after hearing the praise for Secret Avengers I may change my decision to picking up both books now.

I still believe that Jeff Parker should be writing an Avenger title, but I think Thunderbolt will end up being more like a classic Avengers title than anything Bendis will be doing them in the near future.

  2. Bboyce109 says:

Im buying the first arc of all the new avengers series. Im sold on Secret Avengers, its great first storyline and great interaction with the characters, its well worth the $3.99. Avengers storyline is following the kids movie/ back to the future Part 2 is not so good and your both right about no action and a shit load of them just talking. I have less hope for Avengers Academy and New Avengers but i will wait till i read them but i already know that i will drop Avengers unless Bendis improves the story and the characters in the next 3 issues.

  3. Mike F says:

Great shirt Elliot. Great video guys!

Is it me or does the opening track kinda resemble this Kanno track? (after the vocal intro)

  4. TheMSpot says:

So, would you say that Secret Avengers lived up to the hype?

  5. SMARTASS8 says:

So I’m assuming Avengers #2 has a bunch of abortions?

(they want their kids to be stopped before they do bad things, right?)

  6. Edward2962 says:

Logan on the team…the purpose stated in the comic (which never happened) was to have someone on the team who could be more violent than Cap etc.
The real reason of course was to make Spiderwoman look cool by having her stab the most bad-ass hero in the neck.Which is “kinda” redeemable…?

  7. Luiz de Mello says:

I don’t have a big problem with the action/talk ratio on Avengers #1 to be fair, I think for a “first issue” where the team isn’t really forming but just agreeing that they should work together again. Well written dialogues would have been a good way to make the characters few in sync and build a synergy between them as people (not just as strategic battle pieces).

My problem is with the content of the actual dialogues, since it was all ‘looking cool’ written instead. I have problems finding a single page where there isn’t someone trying to look cool through a cheap dialogue that is thrown less for the meaning of the words but almost solely for the ‘I iz cool’ effect. And don’t get me started with Wolverine (FFS) and Spidey talking as if they were seeing the balloons with Steve’s speech in that panel with qualities lined with the character that is supposed to best represent them. I could live without that, really.

  8. Locusmortis says:

This is what I wrote about Avengers #1 back in March in my Previews column, I think I was right to be cautious.

“Well this is the big one for Marvel this month and, indeed for the whole summer, with the launch of the Avengers new flagship title and the Age of Heroes “event”. I should be super-excited for this, the Avengers is my favourite Marvel comics title of all time and it’s got art by JRJr who is one of my favourite artists of all time, so all is gut ja? Well, not exactly. It’s written by Bendis who lately has proven himself adept at writing scene after scene of TV watching and pizza eating but usually fails to have his umpteen characters speak in anything but the one voice (which is his “annoying banter” voice) and act totally out of character. So I’m on the fence about this one, I’m giving it 2 issues to prove itself, that might not seem like many but I am done with waiting for writers to tell an origin story in 6 issues or pad a book out for the trade, I want value for my money.”

  9. dammit i was hpoing you would take a while to post these as i am geting all my comics from this week last week and the week before that as have to order in my books but i want to know what you guys thought of these books.

  10. iqy92 says:

avengers 1 was the first avengers book i read in about a year and half and it obviousley dissapointed. i didn’t like the way iron man was presented, doesnt fraction have a say in how the characters he’s writing are used in other books. I also liked the art, i understand why people don’t like JR jr beacuse the faces are blocky but when i first got into comics, my first monthly book was amazing spider man when jr was on it.

Also does anyone think fraction’s thor will able to stack up againgst jms run on thor becuase that was the best run ive read on a comic book character

    • manaconda! says:

i have full faith that matt fraction will write a good thor book. but thats mainly because hes my favorite writer and i probably have blinders on that dont let me be overly critical of him. yeah i admit it.

  11. kurumais says:

i saw the next avengers it was fun and besides the characters themselves there is nothing from that ova in the book. it was a nicktoon or a cartoon network type story a marvel adventures all ages thing. so they are very different here. they didnt go around slaughtering people
plus in that story steve and natasha have a son and we have the other cap with black widow in the 616 so i wonder if that will play out at all.

  12. manaconda! says:

yo elliot, romita isnt going to be drawing thor, its pasqual ferry (thank the lord)

frankly i think romita jr stinks, and avengers didnt change my opinion on him. his maria hill was completely unappealing, you guys called it, the butchest haircut possible

  13. kurumais says:

    random thoughts on secret avengers

i dont think Valkyrie is going to be very secret lol

i wish they had kept eric o’grady’s version of the ant man costume instead of going back to hank’s

nova had a good appearance here great sequence breaking in and walking up to the you know what
but as someone who has read every issue of nova and all the abnett and lanning’s space events there is NO FREAKING WAY he can be in this book! nova doesnt even have time to breath never mind pop back to earth for secret avenger missions. having him on team is like having wolvrine in all those books it makes no sense. as a fan of abnett and lanning’s stuff i feel like its kind of a slight to them.

do you think the secret defenders will be mad at the secret avengers?

    • SmokeyClocks says:

completely agree with you on o’grady’s costume, which was one of my only complaints. the other being its the secret avengers yet beast has a giant A on his uniform

      • kurumais says:

yeah smoke all the unfiform stuff is weird like during bendis secret war when they had basically the same costumes in black. they were nice designs but huh? bendis said, i think it was bendis, at first they were going go undercover all black ops but everyone would know it was cap because of the shield. but taskmaster usagent and red guardian all use a shield as well. its not automatically cap. oh well whats done is done

  14. Rob F says:

The only real rationale for putting Wolverine on the Avengers would be if Bendis was trying to mirror the JLA. The JLA has typically found success when it contains their heavy hitters (Bats, Supes, WW, etc) which are consequently some of their most popular solo books. So if he were looking at forming an Avengers team with the most lucrative characters then Wolverine would pretty much have to be an Avenger…

    • kurumais says:

well bendis said right from the start of new avengers was he wanted to go back to the original premise of the avengers which was putting marvel biggest characters on the same team. so ok that explains spidey and wolverine but how did he get sentry ,luke cage, spider woman out of that?

    • Sure, Wolverine on an Avengers book helps it sell. But what purpose does he have STORY WISE. Again, the question is ‘when has Wolverine CONTRIBUTED ANYTHING to the Avengers that came of ANY CONSEQUENCE to what the Avengers were doing? How did he help? What bit of assistance did he render? What skill did he use other than going ‘RAWR’!

The guy just SITS THERE DOING NOTHING!

Seems pretty pointless, if you ask me.

      • Will.S says:

        Elliot, I accept your challenge.

House of M: For the first couple of issues Wolverine becomes the POV character and re-assembles the New Avengers (alongside other characters) during the event alongside regaining his memories which set Daniel Way’s Wolverine Origins into motion.

New Avengers #7-10 (The Sentry): Helps his team fight off the Wrecker after having broken out of the Raft.

New Avengers #32-37 (The Trust): Wolverine spouts off various theories and legitimate concerns about who could have been replaced by a skrull on the team and tries to prevent Spider-Woman from getting the Elektra Skrull to Stark. Also gets information about the Hood, fights him off, and tells the New Avengers about their operation to unleash Deathlok upon Stark Tower.

New Avengers #39 – Helps Echo out against a Super Skrull amidst the infiltration.

    • Bendis INSISTED that the Avengers were NOT going to be the Marvel U’s version of the JLA. HE said that there was a reason to having these characters on the team, other than just putting the ‘big names’ together.

In the end, I think he was misleading us or himself.

      • kurumais says:

i never read that e just the pre launch hype of new avengers which he said big guns i agree with everyone spidey and wolvie shouldnt be on the team though early on the spidey and luke chemistry was fun

as for wolverine’s big moment on the team? the only thing i can think of is getting his package shot off by the hood

  15. kurumais says:

i think avengers prime is going to handle putting the avengers trinity back together thats why cap and iron man are ok here

  16. TheMSpot says:

Bendis sits on a throne of lies!

  17. kurumais says:

i posted this on youtube but nobody answered im hoping some valkryie vans will be nice and answer here. whats so great about valkryie? im not looking for a fight or argument i honestly dont see the appeal of the character.

    • Edward2962 says:

I have a slight affection for the character from back in the late 70’s-80’s when she was in the Defenders. She was a spirit in the body of a woman named Barbara Norris, but I think the modern character is supposed to be someone different. She was a C+,B character at best.I think the biggest conceptual flaw was that she would feel pain if she used her powers on another female.
I think ppl just like the “idea” of Valkyrie. What’s not cool about hanging out with a blonde viking girl who has super strength,a winged horse and a magic sword? Throw in Thundra,Sersi,She Hulk and Big Barda and you got a serious party!

  18. kurumais says:

one thing i did like from avengers #1 when thor told bucky cap he didnt know who he was that cracked me up

  19. is anyone else interested that j.michael will be doing a superman story called superman earth one where he brings superman into a more modern world like his ship crashed in the 80’s or 90’s plus if this goes well i can see dc doing a batman wonder woman earth one sries just like marvel did with ultimate

  20. Insideman says:

Loved the reviews Guys… Spot on as usual.

I was thinking about you said about Bendis. Deep in his subconscious maybe he feels like he’s the “popular one” now– so the “peons” writing the individual titles should hew to HIS versions of the characters.

I remember that Peter David got fairly miffed on how She-Hulk was being portrayed in other titles during the Civil War. If memory serves, I believe he simply thought it might have been a good idea to touch base with him on how she was being depicted in the main Civil War title– since David’s She Hulk had completely different thoughts about Registration than Mark Millar’s version of She-Hulk.

In the end, it’s just sloppy work to not at least check in with other creators from time to time.

  21. rottenjorge says:

bendis is getting paid though , how long can he be in marvel as a writer? i really really enjoyed the secrect avengers

  22. Dre says:

Whats the name of the song and arists playing in the background?
