    Great Review guys!

Matt Fraction managed to do something in this annual that a writer hasn’t done for me in a long time, he made me hate a fictional character. I mean, really, really hate the Mandarin!I did that little thing where I dig my knuckle into my temple and frown, I only do that when I am really pissed and my mind is racing at what I have just read.

Fraction created one of the most tragic characters in my recent memory in Jun Shan, I really felt bad for the poor guy. He not a hero, just a average guy that unfortunately happens to be the favorite movie director of the Mandarin. Watching Jun Shan struggle with an impossible task given to him by a complete psychopath with the power to kill him and his wife at any moment is hard to read at times. Fraction does a terrific job of giving life to Jun Shan struggles, the way Jun alternates between fear, depression, anger, acceptance and finally resignation to his fate is like watching a terminal ill man go through the Elizabeth Kubler-Ross stages of death and dying.

The interesting thing about the movie the Mandarin wants Jun Shan to make is on the surface it appears he wants a glorified account of his life, but by the end of the story it becomes apparent to me the movie is more about his hatred of Tony Stark than anything else, it’s not until Jun has to deal with the Mandarin’s insistence on including Iron Man into his movie that Jun realizes his position is hopeless and finally makes plans for his escape.

What pissed me off the most however wasn’t Jun ultimate fate and the fate of all of the others working on the film, there is a scene about two-thirds the way though the book where the reader knows that Jun and his film crew’s will never make it out alive, the Mandarin will have his movie even if it means killing everyone involved. It was the last two panels of the book that got my blood boiling, Fraction lets the reader know, that while everything that Jun Shan went through in last 70 or so pages might have had an effect on the reader, the Mandarin was completely unaffected by any of it. So complete is his narcissism that he sees the outcome of his attempt at making ‘his’ movie a complete success in his eyes, something to be celebrated.

I hate it when the bad guys win.. ! I really do! I don’t think I have been this pissed off at the ending of something since I saw Se7en years ago, i walked out of theater wanting to punch the director of that movie in the face.

Oh, and I really liked Di Giandomenico art, thought it fit the style of the story perfectly, I wouldn’t mind seeing her(?) do some work on the regular series.

Fraction was definitely using this annual to set up a future storyline, at least I hope so. I really want to see Iron Man pound the shit out of the Mandarin for what he did to Jun Shan!

  3. Isn’t the episode of Simpsons you guys mentioned the one with the Football in the Groin bit? I laugh every time I see that.

I have only read the first 5 pages of this annual… been busy/tired/lazy/reading Blankets and Avengers Forever.

Thanks for all the shirt info. I didn’t even watch the video and decided I wanted the shirt. Then, the minute I started the video I recognized the Graphitti logo.

It’s a real shame Graphitti doesn’t have the Marvel license anymore. That company made a lot of money for publishers during the day.

Their stuff is ALL top quality.

Thanks for all the other choices too! I’m definitely gonna look them all over.

Maybe the 3rd act will be in the Ironman title by Matt. Either way I’m SO happy I bought this book. THIS is what a 5 dollar comic should be. Seriously DC, 3 bad $5 titles and this one topped them all…

I got a little confused at the end. At the end (spoiler) when the director is killed in the streets by whom he refers to as a wife, was it a double? and his real wife was in the room with the Mandarin? How’d he not realize it wasn’t his real wife?

I had the same problem. What was her motive to kill her own husband?
I thought that Mandarin hynotised her in doing it..
You could be right about the twin-clone, but where does he get a clone from?

Great review of Fraction’s Iron Man! One a side note, at the begining of the vid, half of me was trying to listen to the review, the other half was rocking out to Tegan and Sara ;D

  9. great review my only problem with this book was there was no confrontation with iron man which would have been cool

  10. I just finished the annual and I liked it a lot. To me this is what a 5 dollar book should be. I loved the whole feel of the book and the way it was told. The only downside is that the ending was a bit confusing and that now we have to wait for the Iron Man/Mandarin confrontation. I hope Iron Man lays a smackdown on Mandarin for what he did to Jun and the crew of the movie.

Excellent review, I guess I’m gonna have to buy that annual.

I’ve been waiting to see what Fraction is gonna do with Mandarin.

  12. I was a little dissapointed that the annual wasn’t mostly about the Mandarin, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.I liked Jun Shan and I thought what he went through was touching.
