Red & Beans fight the Haterades!

  1. Hey Folks, Elliott here. Jose’s apartment is without electricity so he asked me to take over on the blog until he can re-join civilization. You all know the drill:

    • And the fucks at Com Ed won’t come out and restore it till Monday. Apparently they don’t work on the weekends and my situation doesn’t count as an emergency. Doesn’t matter that it’s 98 degrees in my apartment and everything in my fridge will be ruinied if not already.

So ya, I’ll be on here while I am at work I guess but I won’t be posting again regularly till Monday.

      J.

      • Venom829 says:

That sucks man. Especially for your food 😦

      • phil says:

        just remember don’t…

      • Edward2962 says:

Dude, I’ve been there.I don’t know what your frig situation is,but you’ll probably end up gorging on half and throwing the rest away.I never had to wait more than a day,so for you to wait the whole weekend as got to be agony. We’re all pulling for you tho. Keep yer head up and all the other cliches.

You might appreciate this song in your current situation. It’s not about ComED but it is about slumlords

        • The situation is the they said they never received my payment which I sent them 2 weeks ago. I guess I am partly to blame for not noticing the money hadn’t been taken out of my account. They turned the power off early Friday. I called right away to see what the deal was, they told me and then I just paid it over the phone. No one came back out that day to turn the power back on. And when I called today they said they don’t restore power on the weekends.

          J.

          • Venom829 says:

            That is just RETARDED!

          • Stamps says:

I agree with Venom, that’s so dumb. It’s like a million degrees outside! My company works on the weekends -I know from first hand experience.
What if you were elderly and in this heat with no power? It’s always so nice to see companies caring about their customers.

Good luck this weekend -try to stay cool Jose

          • rush says:

Got to love utility companies. The humidity in the Chicago area during summer is brutal. Hope you survive man.

      • Hope your situation gets better J! Whenever my house looses power it’s usually back within a couple hours, so I can’t give much advice… anyway hope everything goes well!

      • Deemar says:

        Damn Jose that sucks!

Stay cool and drink plenty fluids, that or crash at Elliot’s crib. He’ll pull all his hair out by Monday!

      • Insideman says:

And Jose… You better stay ON THEIR ASS ON MONDAY TOO… Or they WON’T restore your power then either. Been down this road before. 🙂

  2. Venom829 says:

I just finished playing Red Dead Redemption, and wow, whant an EPIC ending! YOU ALL MUST PLAY IT!!!

  3. Edward2962 says:

Has anyone read Batman:Odyssey yet? I saw it at the LCS but I have to hold off cuz of budget reasons, tho I’ll probably get it next week. I was just curious as to what anyone here thought…

    • I did read it. The story was alright. The art, however, is great. My problem with the story was that it didn’t grab my interest right away and not much happens. Hopefully the story will pick up as it moves along.

      • Edward2962 says:

The quick impression I got from just flipping thru it was that some stuff was happening, but ok. I also can see where some editor or management was like “It’s the 21st century,Neal… ya gonna stretch it out.”

        • Yeah that could be that an editor just recommended to stretch it out. To me it just seemed like not a lot was happening. If you like Neal Adams’ art then you should buy it.

      • Insideman says:

I love Neal Adams art. Always have. That said, I have never READ a Neal Adams script that I liked. NEVER. (His writing style was just never my taste.)

So this will have to be an art purchase for me– and a reminder of what could have been in comics if Neal hadn’t moved onto more lucrative advertising and licensing jobs.

It would be cool if DC could get Denny O’Neil and Neil back together– at least one last time.

        • phil says:

I can’t recall whether or not if I read an Adams script, but if he did the scripting at Continuity then yeah.. I can see where that might be a bit of a chore to get through.
Neal being Neal artistically is enough for me to pick up the 1st issue, but he’s gonna have to show something for me to pick up the series.

          • Insideman says:

If memory serves, Neal wrote all the scripts for all the books he did art work for out of Continuity (his publishing company).

            They were not my “thang”.

    • rush says:

The art is fantastic but I couldn’t finish it, I stopped half way through. I think the story needs more polish. I MAY try to read it again.

  4. Alright, I am off for the today. Talk to you all tomorrow.

    J.

  5. Jeremy says:

Because this is Comic CULTURE Warrior, who’d win in a fight: Dr. Strange (as Sorcercer Supreme) or Harry Potter?

  6. Mike F says:

How the fuck did NEMESIS get a 3rd Printing?

    GGGGGGGGoooooooooooooooooddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd……. it just never ends…

    • Admit it…you’ve got the first 2 printings and the variants. 😉

      Fanboyz gotta have dey Nemesis!

      Elliott

      • Mike F says:

Haha, well it actually kinda scares me. I mean this is one of the most violent comics I ever read and THAT many people are buying it… Just makes you wonder.

        • Deemar says:

If Millar has one talent it’s the Sales Pitch, Nemesis is a pretty appealing concept and that Scotsman is selling it with all his might.

Plus he always plays to our baser instincts, that just what Millar does.

Keep it simple, keep it immature, keep it off schedule.

        • rush says:

Violence sells. Look at how many people watched that poor guy get beheaded years back.

          • Luiz de Mello says:

Sad true since the dawn of humanity, or somewhere right after that. Was it not for press/tv/computers&ineternet (and how easy it is to access them) I bet coliseums would abound at, at least, the western world.

          • Deemar says:

Yeah that was pretty messed up.

    • Venom829 says:

Wow! Fanboys are seling the little dignity they have to Millar all the time, and they don’t know it!

  7. Don’t know if you guys have already talked about this, but…:

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/07/09/marvel-to-publish-old-man-logan-two-next-year/

Why God? Why? We had to suffer a year and a half of the apparent 1st part of OML. Why why WHY??? I felt so dirty and embarressed after I read OML. Fanboys truely suck. (sorry to those of you who liked OML).

    • Venom829 says:

Anybody on here probably doesn’t not like OML CBD 🙂

    • phil says:

Some folks embarassment is other folks exhilleration, CBdude. No matter how often I try leaving this debate, I keep getting dragged back in (Did I pull off the Godfather approach? 🙂 ..)

Anyhoo I know I keep putting my head out there to get chopped off by defending this series, but while it’s not a cerebral mindf**k, it was a rollercoaster ride that I liked all the twists and turns and what have you……except for the final issue, which just came to a screetching halt Kinda like eating cotton candy all day but never being satisfied.

Here’s a question for any/all to respond to if you have read it. What did any of you think of Howard Chaykin’s Black Kiss? I’m figuring the level of disdain that so many share for OML, then Black Kiss must be like taking a shower with glass shards coming out of the faucet instead of water. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  8. TheMSpot says:

Elliott, what is your take of Scarlet #1?

  9. Edward2962 says:

watch this vid before you tube takes it down again

90’s hip-hop! No bitches or corporate “gangstas”! George Clinton samples! Yea!

  10. Insideman says:

More SURPRISING “Dark Reign” reads! WTF?

I sat down to read a bunch of trades and hardcovers and realized I was still in the midst of Marvel’s “Dark Reign”. I literally just left the books sitting there for days. I had bought them awhile ago and I wasn’t planning on this pile being any fun. Then I read the first 3 or 4 and really liked them. The last one, “Dark Reign: The Underside” was filled with all kinds of subversive fun. (I already wrote about the “Zodiac” part of the book in a different thread.)

Then I got to “Sinister Spider-Man” and I thought, “This is where the sucking begins.” It was written by Brian Reed with art by Chris Bachalo. I’m not a huge fan of the overly cartoon style that permeates Bachalo’s work now… But Brian Reed wrote a GREAT script for it. The book played like one of those wacky 1940’s slapstick comedies and somehow the level of Brian’s absurd caricature– aided by Bachalo’s wacky art– melded together for a very entertaining book. The cover of issue #5 (used on the back cover of the trade)of a HUGE Venom/Spider-Man munching on the Empire State Building (with a big fat belly) was almost worth the price of the whole book.

Then “Dark Reign: The Hood”. I thought, “Never liked the Hood that much. I guess this will be OK. Maybe.” Then I saw it was written by JEFF PARKER and my whole attitude changed (especially because of Elliott and Jose’s constant praise of the man). So I sat down and read it and it was the BEST Hood story written SO FAR, BY FAR. And Kyle Hotz art (he was the artist on the first Hood HC) was great too. Nice to see Kyle working on a book in the “real” world (instead of MAX titles like Man-Thing… Although those were fun too.) But seriously, Marvel & Brian K. Vaughn actually owe a GREAT DEBT to Jeff Parker… Because Parker took a cardboard character and made the Hood a THREE dimensional, believable PERSON (NOT just a villain) for the very first time (at least for me).

Then “Dark Reign: Young Avengers”? It’s written by Paul Cornell. Hands down BEST Young Avengers book since the original stuff (which I believe gets an Ultimate Collection reprinting from Marvel next week). But Paul hit all the right high and lows with this script– with good art from Mark Brooks. I did want to shoot the colorists for some really outrageous 80’s-style over-shading (their use of the brown/maroon palette was gravely serious sometimes). But needless to say– since almost everyone has said it here already– the Marvel Brass were idiots to let Cornell go exclusive with DC.

Which brings me to “Dark Reign: Skull Kill Krew”. I honestly do NOT know what even possessed me to buy this. I remember reading the original Grant Morrison / Mark Millar trade years ago. “Reading” is a term used loosely because I had to put it down and STOP READING halfway through– it was that much of a joyless experience for me.

So when this hit the top of the stack I thought, “Here’s the book that stops the insanity of me actually liking these ‘Dark Reign’ ancillary books.”

NOPE. I mean, what the hell? I was CERTAIN I wasn’t going to like this book and now I was sitting here REALLY liking this book. MILD SPOILER: The whole thing with the Skrull Cows was hilarious but the book was also filled with very valid moments that questioned the need– and the mission– of the Skrull Kill Krew. You could tell that Adam Felber was having a great time writing the thing… And it is HE that should be writing a NORMAN OSBORN BOOK. Felber’s portrayal of Osborn was mean, funny and heartless at the same time… Think a GREAT portrayal of the Joker WITHOUT the makeup. The art by Mark Robinson and Rob Disalvo was the only thing I questioned. NOT because it sucked — because it didn’t. But the artists’ styles are VERY different… So to have 3 issues of one, then an issue of another, then back to the first guy– was a little jarring… But that was a MINOR problem– as Felber took Morrison and Millar to SCHOOL with this writing on this series.

How fucking weird. Marvel “cross-over titles” that DIDN’T suck. Since this is the FIRST TIME I have felt this way in 7 years of reading these BIG EVENT craptaculars, I am NOT considering it a trend. But I have been pleasantly surprised and would recommended ALL these books– if for very different reasons.

Unfortunately, there looks like there are a couple more on the pile to screw this up. I almost wish that I had read “Dark Reign: Skrull Kill Krew” LAST… As the next book, “Dark Reign: War Machine Vol 2” looks like it might slap all the joy outta me.

Hopefully not. The above testifies that I have been wrong before. Not often, mind you… But color me very pleasantly surprised. 🙂

    • Now if Marvel could just get more of those Captain Britain & MI:13 trades out there, I’d be happy! That title was the best thing to come out of Secret Invasion, another ‘craptacular’ x-over event.

      Elliott

      • Heck says:

Oh man, what is taking so long on those!? They’d look so nice on my shelfs.

      • Deemar says:

Yeah, I just don’t understand the readership.

Captain Brit was the best team book of the last decade in my opinion. (Yes even better than AoA)

Do the fanboys on the whole not have a sense of quality? what is the disconnect? I just don’t get it.

      • Insideman says:

Elliott, I fear that Marvel will be DOUBLY SLOW in releasing the trades now that Cornell has signed an exclusive with DC. I wouldn’t be surprised if Quesada’s MySpace mood read “spiteful”– as far as his feelings for Cornell go right now. 😉

You’d figure the higher-ups would think these career moves were just that– The price of doing business… But they always seem to take them MORE PERSONAL than that.

I also know these companies use the trades to help amortize “low” selling titles… So they should release the trades now… If anything, as a goodwill gesture to the series’ rabid fans.

Does Marvel make such gestures anymore (other than the Invincible Gene Colan HC– that they unfortunately seemed to not print enough of)?

      • Stamps says:

I got into Captain Britain and MI:13 right as it was winding down, so I would LOVE to be able to get a trade and read it from the very beginning.

      • Pobra says:

Yeah, I’m still waitin on those Cap Britain trades. That series went under my radar when the singles were coming out.

  11. cballsack says:

In case we all die, I just wanted to say it was nice knowing you folks.

er,um…this actually kinda rocks(?) in a mid-70’s MOR sorta kinda way? Maybe?

also,Jackson Brown called..he wants the first 2 bars of “Dr My Eyes” back.

  13. Edward2962 says:

An’ this one’s for Jose just cuz he’s an Amiee Mann fan and I’m a fan of this movie…

For all the Mann songs Jose has posted, how come no one ever mentions the band Til’ Tuesday?

    Here’s IGN review of Shadowland #1: http://comics.ign.com/articles/110/1104929p1.html

    Thank fuck.

waits for the bookies to open 🙂

    • Pobra says:

Fuck!! Locus you bastard! I’m in the middle of watching the game right now and have been actively avoiding the radio or any discussion involving it, so i could watch it tonight!!! arrrrggghhhhhhh! Oh well, i was rooting for Spain anyway 🙂

      • cballsack says:

And the lesson for today, boys and girls, is never go on the internet when you’re trying to avoid current news.

        • You’d think Pobra wouldn’t be on, seeing he’s busy washing his taint.

Amazing how dem Canadians can multi-task. 😉

          Elliott

          • Pobra says:

I am also carving a log, taming a moose and drinking six beers at once, all while playing an intense game of lacrosse, with a guitar and harmonica, typing this message and cleaning up the debris still left from the G20 summit.

          • Luiz de Mello says:

Ambidexterity is a bliss, with one hand he types with the other he washes the taint. Oh wait, this wasn’t one of my most well formulated phrases, was it? 😛

            • Pobra says:

And we can add the word “taint” to the list of words not to say on this blog anymore. 🙂

  18. phil says:

And for what is surely to be one ot the most horrific trilogies in modern cinema

  19. Mike F says:

I’m still not sure how to change my profile pic on this blog :\

    • Deemar says:

Just open an wordpress account and aside from making yourself a blog any pic you choose as a gravatar will show up here.

      Hope that helps

      • Insideman says:

Follow Deemar’s instructions and, if you’re like me, it won’t work half the time.

        Welcome to my hell.

    • cballsack says:

Just google “gravatar.” That’s how I figured it out.

    • rush says:

You don’t need a wordpress account. go here http://en.gravatar.com/ and sign up.

      • pmknight12 says:

        thx for the tip, rush
        question though;
once you’ve changed your avatar is it cusyomary thatwhere it says leave a reply here on the ccw blog that instead of showing in box one your;your e-mail,box two your blog or channel and box three the box for your message and istead just shows the leave a reply box with username?

  20. Insideman says:

Cballsack… I’ve been meaning to ask. Does the “c” stand for “clean”?

Cause I am living testament to the ladies loving a “cleanly shaven” ballsack. Picked it up years ago when I was introduced to a lot of Porn Stars and started hanging out on porn sets.

Not only do the ladies DEMAND the clean ballsack but they make the point that a clean shaven area makes your JUNK LOOK BIGGER.

Obviously an optical illusion… Women (and men– don’t want to exclude anyone) always believe the junk looks larger after a clean shave.

DOZENS of veteran porn stars cannot be wrong.

    Shave responsibly.

    • cballsack says:

You and my friend Philip would get along swimmingly. He always brings up his shaven ‘nads whenever he’s high. Which is pretty much all the time.

      • Insideman says:

        Overall POINT:

        Women LOVE shaved nads.

        • cballsack says:

Yeah, that’s what Philip always says.

And to answer your question, the “c” is for my first name, which is Charles. My last name sounds a little like “ballsack” and it was pretty much my nickname throughout high school.

          • Insideman says:

I feel for you. My first name rhymed with “potty: in grade school… Until I got big enough to force people to change the way they thought about me. 😉

  21. Insideman says:

Well, I read “Dark Reign: War Machine Vol 2”. Book was crazy. Greg Pak’s script went from brilliant, to bad, to brilliant again. Used Norman Osborn way too much. NO way ONE man is in all these books doing all this shit at the same time. How will he ever have time to knock-up underage paramours of Peter Parker again? Art also went from good to bad then average. Very schizo overall. Not anywhere near as fun as “Dark Reign: Skrull Kill Krew”.

  22. cballsack says:

    This looks pretty decent.

  23. phil says:

🙂 🙂 still feeling my way through

  24. Hey everyone,
Jose asked me to inform you that he’ll be getting the Mellow Monday post up once he has the power back on in his apartment.

I offered to do it myself, but he didn’t want me to post 3 Eagles songs in a row.

    Carry on,

    Elliott

  25. kurumais says:

is there a tv show or hollywood project not going to comic con?
no wonder they want to move it to LA

  26. TheMSpot says:

It seems to be Scarlet is the talk of the town. My favorite part of all the coverage on blogs and comic book review sites is the recognition of Brian Michael Bendis’ recent failures like The Avengers, New Avengers, etc.

    • I find that quite funny.

      J.

      • TheMSpot says:

        Welcome back J.

        • Ah, thank you. I am so glad this hellish weekend is behind me.

          J.

          • kurumais says:

“agine, if you will, the “storytelling” style of “Supergod” done at street level, and instead of taking on subjects massive and momentous, “Scarlet” #1 ignores the fourth wall and is far too self-conscious to be good. Blah blah blah murder blah blah blah sexual innuendo blah blah blah mountain of cliches. Tedious.”

from the buy pile on cbr about scarlet

            • TheMSpot says:

The buy pile on CBR is one of my least favorite things on CBR. His picks for buys seem to come out of left field for me for some reason.

              • kurumais says:

hey mspot do me favor review the last cap issue for me i did the issue before that not sure if you saw it it was a couple of threads back
did you like the karl kesel 40’s newpaper strip thing? i did it was fun lighthearted gave it to one of my nephews for 4th of july
got get em addicted while they are young

                • TheMSpot says:

Sure, Heres a mini one, it’s great to see the series back on track after the anti-climatic events of 605 even though I still think Reborn took some life out of series. I like the art style of Guice, and didn’t mind Breitweiser’s work, I enjoyed his work on Theater of War. Over all solid work.

I didn’t pick up the 40s strip because it was a mini so I thought I would wait for the trade on that one. But I heard it was a fun read.

Yeah, get them while their young just like the tobacco industry. He he.

                  • Locusmortis says:

The Buy Pile is an awful column, its like a world where good stuff is bad and bad stuff is great, it makes no fucking sense.

My Previews column on this very blog is much closer to the truth 😉

                    • Speaking of which…when we going to get to read the new one? 🙂

                      J.

                    • Locusmortis says:

Previews only got delivered today so I’m making notes at the moment. Theres not a whole lot that looks great so far so it might be a short column 😛

My actual box of comics hasn’t even left the states yet, somehow the 4th of July holiday has caused a 2 week delay…that sounds like a McNiven level excuse to me 😛

                    • TheMSpot says:

                      I couldn’t agree more.

                    • kurumais says:

you guys taking offence at his writing or taste?

                  • kurumais says:

              • kurumais says:

i like buy pile because its a quick read

      • Insideman says:

        I do too.

    • phil says:

I saw Mr. Pekar on Letterman. It was entertaining, but awkward.

    • cballsack says:

      Oh, damn! That’s messed up.

    • Edward2962 says:

It’s funny how Schaefer has a look that’s like “My name is Paul, that’s between y’all.”

I still have my copy of the collection American Splendor published by Doubleday that I bought ’87. I’m not quite sure Harvey invented autobiographical comics, but he along with Crumb,Gary Dumm and the other artists he worked with helped perfect it.

  27. TheMSpot says:

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

  28. Insideman says:

It’s a little bit of both, MSpot. Mostly crying for me– since I have read almost ALL of that shit.

  29. Insideman says:

By the way, to echo the above… Welcome back Jose. We were all worried about you getting a heat rash.

    • Thanks. It did suck but I got a lot of reading done. Read ‘Asterios Polyp’ last night and loved it.

      J.

      • Pobra says:

So it lives up to the hype? I’ve been curious about Asterios, but wasn’t sure if it would be my thing. I’m not sure I’ve even heard a clear summary of what it’s about, most people just say, “oh it’s amazing”. Which is not really enough for me to go on.

        • It’s a character piece about the life of one Asterios Polyp. It begins on his 50th birthday and jumps around from different points in his life (the present and one point in particular in past). The point in the past starts off with with teaching architecture in college and how he met his future wife. In the present time he is no longer with his wife but we do not know what happened in his relationship. As the book progresses we find out what type of person he used to be (and what did in fact happen with his wife) and the character he has now become because of choices he made.

It deals quite a bit with art, philosophy and psychology. It is not a challenging read per say but it does need you to bring some intellect to the table to fully comprehend it.

As an artist, you may get more out of it then I did for different reasons. You should flip through it next time you are at your LCS. It is an amazing work.

          J.

So that’s what it’s about! Awesome, thanks J.

“It is not a challenging read per say but it does need you to bring some intellect to the table to fully comprehend it.”

            Great! Where’s my Ginko?

            • Heh, you haven’t read it yet Insideman? I admittedly was late to the party on this book and Rush made me feel bad when he found out I hadn’t read it yet. Greendale will be next for me later this week.

              J.

              • Pobra says:

Yes! Thank you for reminding me about Greendale, I should really own that by now.

                • Pobra says:

You’ll have to let me know what you think of it once you read it J, but I’ve already heard plenty of praise for it. Plus anything involving Neil Young has my interest sight unseen.

While I was “creating” a blog from a template– you snuck by me again. 😉

Hey did anyone see that Edward Norton isn’t going to be Hulk in the Avengers movie? Here’s what Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige had to say:

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in ‘The Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. ‘The Avengers’ demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

Seriously, pretty much all the actors are b and c listers with the exception of Robert Downey. Man Marvel is fucking shit up yet again.

So Jose… Forgetting the weekend trauma yet? Or is it too soon?

I was without AC in So Cal last MAY for 5 days and it was about 100 every day. Up 70’s at night with HOT AIR. Had to have my entire AC unit replaced. Top floor condo. Took awhile.

Thankfully I am NOT like you– as far as reacting to cold. You can’t make it too cold for me. I’d rather freeze to death than go any other way (short of a quick heart attack).

MAN DC IS GRINDING MT GEARS TODAY! After the whole return of Bruce Wayne series, you think Bruce will be Batman right? No. You know what DC thinks we need? 8 ONE-SHOTS! All on differenent characters! I’ve like Dick as Batman, but when Bruce comes back, I want MY Batman back, Bruce Wayne! What a Marvel move!
