  1. Mike F says:

Great review. Man, I was so pissed this issue didn’t live up to it for me…

I do love Bullseye, but I think this dude should just be taken down.

    WORST art. Seriously.

I really feel like Diggle was pressured into this. Marvel saw that DD was selling well, and pushed him into this.

    • Insideman says:

Mike, I agree. If the adaptation of Diggle’s, “The Losers” hadn’t bombed at the box-office, I think Andy would have had more clout to push back against this event– if he didn’t want to do it.

My guess is Andy could have come up with a very tight concept for Daredevil alone… Only to have some corporate slug/editor spark to it– dub the event “Shadowland” and then suddenly there were tons of cross-over “support” titles being added to Andy’s idea… And every bit of this could have initially been done without A) Andy’s approval and B) Andy even KNOWING about it.

A “smart” Mr. Diggle (and there is no reason to believe he isn’t smart) will take his lumps or accolades and live to earn another paycheck another day.

You’re just a cog when you work for a corporation. And unless you’re a “favored son” like a Johnny Depp or a Brian Bendis– you will have to do what the corporation tells you if you want to keep working there.

  2. Agmaster says:

First off, I read WW, I agree with the change, and I really didn’t think it was going to be such a big deal to people. Let me first say, I love the idea of a street level veritable free for all for a comic event. So I may be bias. ELliot, dropping it after Bendis….shameful. The book really hasn’t dropped.

On to Shadowland, I liked it. First off the costume change can be easily explained away with the change in the midnset of DD, also there are hints of Murdock being drugged when Bakuto was attacked as well as the Elektra “dream”.

I’m disappointed that Bullseye was so quickly offed, but it’s understandable in setting the pace if DD is to be the villain. The guards freaking fail, though.

  3. generaldark says:

did comic shops not order enough of this thing? mine didnt have it when i went to get my stuff and im hearing others say they didnt order enough. was that the case or was it actually that popular?

    • SmokeyClocks says:

my shop owner said that they were shorted but that they were getting some in this week, so im guessing there might have been a larger issue if other stores suffered a similar fate.

  4. There’s no joy in Mudville today as Jeff Parker announces the that ATLAS is going the way of Captain Britain & MI13 today:

    http://www.comicsalliance.com/2010/07/13/jeff-parker-ken-hale-on-gorilla-man-the-end-of-agents-of-atlas/

Sorry, but this is one of those days when fanboys just suck.

    Elliott

    • This is turning into “one of those months” for me. Unbelievable.

Parker says in his interview that he pulled the trigger on the series and not Marvel. Though I am guessing if Parker didn’t end it now Marvel surely would have. Except for a few monthlies that I enjoy I am pretty much done with Marvel. This really is the last straw. Creative books just can not survive in their environment. So we lose Agents of Atlas and get what? Oh we get Uncanny X-force #1 in October. Ya, that will surely make up for it.

      • generaldark says:

late april fools day right guys?……right??…..god dammit…

        • generaldark says:

wow this is really killing a part of me…

          • mbell028 says:

Yeah this was tough to read, but not at all suprising. The comic industry shuns creativity and innovation. The industry feels if its not broken dont fix it. I wish it were possible for Atlas to be free of Marvel and become a Jeff Parker Creater owned product especially at Image that would be really cool.

            • kurumais says:

well marvel did give atlas plenty of chances to find an audience
so i cant get upset at them but this one hurts like firefly did

              • kurumais says:

i was very depressed today over the atlas news then i went over to the escapist and watched yahtze’s vid about e3 and it filled me with joy

      • TheMSpot says:

Marvel says Shadowland is a limited series, well it’s not, it’s another event. I am getting real sick of these event comics. I’m getting sick of Marvel with this piss poor business practice that what is needed to sell comics is a event. With the news of the demise of Atlas and the statement by Parker basically saying Marvel doesn’t know any other way to sell a book without putting it in a event. It is a sad commentary of the state of the industry, and Marvel itself. Oh wait according to Marvel I’m not allowed to make such statements they just want me to keep buying their shit without question.

Fuck Marvel. They went bankrupt once, and now their owned by Disney. They are delaying the inevitable. Marvel is The House of Ideas no one says what kind of ideas.

      • IronMuskrat says:

Fuck am I pissed right now… You know what, I should have seen this coming, Marvel has never had a clue about what to do with Agents of Atlas, all they see are ways to take advantage of loyal customers and squeeze them for another nickle. Agents of Atlas has always had a small, but loyal following, it was never going to make huge numbers for Marvel. So, surprise, surprise, the book isn’t in the top ten, so Marvel canceled it after two issues, and Jeff Parker can spin it anyway he wants, but Marvel killed his book while it was still in the cradle.

But wait Ironmuskrat, Jeff Parker said he was the one that decided to end the book at issue five.. What the fuck ever! Hummm, five issues? why does that number seem to have special meaning to me when I think of comics, oh yeah… it’s the number of issues you need for a standard size trade, funny how that worked out like that. Jeff Parker is one of my favorite comic writers right now, but this whole deal stinks like bullshit. If the numbers on the book were low after first two issues, they are really going to be low for the last three after you announce that the book is going to be canceled! So why not just cancel the book now? Oh yeah, then you missed to chance to try and pinch Atlas fans down the road for more money.

I want my fucking money back for the two issues of Atlas I bought, now that I know six months from now I will be seeing an Atlas trade sitting at my LCS. No way I am buying the last three issues, if I know I will be able to get the trade cheaper down the road.

Man, Marvel fooled me again..I really thought this would be a serious attempt to keep Atlas around this time and look what happened. Instead of getting Atlas, I am going to end up with what amounts to a 3-D Man trade.. Fuck!

        IM

    • Iqy says:

Oh wow I just bought the trades a week ago and thought they were suprisingly amazing. This is bad news. Do you think customers like me who wait for the trades increase the chance of the series being canned? I would like to buy a lot more monthleys but it’s too much of strain on my wallet and with trades you can get discounts.

      • Insideman says:

Iqy, Some people say that peopling waiting for trades an cause books to be canceled. But as I just wrote about at my new blog, http://www.swearallyoulike.com (shameless plug)these companies know how to count hardcover and Trade sales.

They can combine these numbers and determine whether a series is profitable. Believe me when I tell you that Marvel & DC do NOT care how they make their money– whether it is floppies or collections… And if a book makes money, they’ll keep producing the book.

        • Iqy says:

Thanks for the reply guess I don’t have to feel guilty now

          • Insideman says:

Never feel guilty about SPENDING MONEY on anything. People read free book scans on the internet… So You should never feel guilty about actually spending your cash on comics, Iqy– any way you choose to do so! 🙂

    • Mr.Wrestling says:

All in all, not surprising news. But definitely sad news. Time and time again Marvel cancels new and original titles to make way for more shitty wolverine, deadpool and avengers books. Books like Atlas, Captain Britain, Doctor Voodoo, and Ghost Rider. All canceled.

      ….just Fuck Marvel..

    • tomstewdevine says:

WOW, Absolute horse shit. I took a chance on Atlas and liked it, but now i feel that it was all for nothing. The first issue all about 3-D man was good, but now it really doesn’t make since to have a issue all about 3-D man when you only have 5 issues to tell your story. This is shitty news.

We need a new Vertigo book by Parker.

  5. mbell028 says:

I totally agree with you Jose the costume was not explained and his actions don’t make sense at all. I’m wondering if it’s supposed to be like when they were recruiting Murdock for the hand and his two friends (can’t think of their names right now) had the red eyes and were in the trance. Could Daredevil be under the same trance since we see the guys at the beginning performing a spell? If it is that would suck ass and be a cop out I hope its not seeing Daredevil finally go over the edge after all the shit he’s seen would be awesome they need to explain it better throughout the rest of shadowland.

    • That is a very good point. It would make sense but, like you said that, would be a HUGE cop out.I want to see Murdock CHOOSE to go over the edge, not FORCED to. I guess we will hopefully find out what the hell is up in this week’s Daredevil.

      J.

      • mbell028 says:

yeah definately Jose. I hope Diggle starts to use Lady Bullseye more within Shadowland than he has throughout his run on Daredevil. It definately wouldn’t of made sense to use her in his previous issues, but I think he should incorporate her because I really enjoyed Brubakers story arc with her. Now that Bullseye is possibly dead I’m sure she’ll appear to take her revenge I hope it’s done well if not I’m done with Daredevil

  6. MicahSkin says:

I hafta say, I didn’t read WW and haven’t really done so ever. I remember one issue where Wally’s wife interviewed her about her day to day activities but I breezed through that in a comic store. So like the First Minister of the Neutral Planet said, “I have no strong feelings one way or the other”. However, I do like the new costume.

As for Daredevil, another character I just don’t care about. As an outsider to his continuity, it just seems like more of the same. He’s either fighting Kingpin, Bullseye or Elektra is hanging around and we’re not sure what she’s doing. That’s kinda all he’s got goin for him. And that’s not enough to draw me in. And I’m sorry but that art was Crap. Are we even sure Tan did the art this time?

  7. […] that Marvel’s Shadowland Comic Book Cross-over has just begun and trusted critics are already divided on whether the whole shebang sucks balls or is OK… So I thought this might be a great time to talk about a company-wide Comic Cross-over that […]

  8. Pobra says:

This Shadowland EVENT (let’s face it, that’s what it is) feels completely rushed and shoehorned (no pun intended) and it feels like it picks up in the middle of an arc that hasn’t happened yet. It feels cheap and gimmicky and the new costume sucks ASS (what’s with the terrible font on the DD chest logo?) and the art is terrible. And I don’t like it. Did I mention that the art is terrible?
I don’t fault Diggle for Shadowland’s overall suckyness, he was building a very promising run on DD. i think you guys are right, marvel intervened, forced an event out of it and fuckity-doo.

    • Iqy says:

Shadowland doesn’t even seem like an event. Marvel just thought the premise is cool (which it is) so they thought to stretch it so they can make money on their customer base. This story could have been done on the dd monthley book rather than making a new miniseries. One good thing is that there’s going to be a return of iron fist.

  9. Insideman says:

Another great video guys… Although Jose looks to be TOTALLY SAPPED of enthusiasm because of the power troubles he was experiencing.

I started writing up a Dark Reign overview on my blog (which I ABSOLUTELY promise to quit plugging in all my posts in the next day or two when the sheen wears off) and by Jose’s reactions to Shadowland in the comment section– I naturally figured you guys thought it sucked.

So I wrote the column and THEN watched the video (before posting my thoughts, of course). Oopsie! 🙂 Major editing and rewriting ensued to accommodate Elliott’s cautious optimism for the event.

What’s weird– in all the videos I’ve watched… You guys have always agreed with each other– at least on the major points. I am sure you have disagreed numerous times in the past– but not in my experience… So that was good to see.

Adds a little spice to the soup!

    “HOW BAD IS IT?”
    “THAT BAD.”
