Jose, you should just stop posting martial arts clips now. That’s one of, if not the, best fight scenes of all time. Few, if any, martial artists have come close to the charisma that Jackie Chan has on screen imo. It’s sad that, in his twilight years, he’s stuck making childrens movies in America.

  1. MattyB says:

I don’t think you have talked about it but have you read any Locke & Key at all?

    • littlekingryan* says:

well, i know you didn’t ask me, but no, I haven’t gotten around to it yet personally, although it’s definitely on my list. I can pick up the first hardcover at my local library, so it’s kind of a no-risk proposition.

    • I read the first mini series and really liked it. I have been meaning to read the rest of it but haven’t managed to do so yet. I plan on doing so though.

      J.

  2. littlekingryan* says:

Looks like Deemar and I may be collaborating on an original comic. He really wants me to draw something, but I’ll have to overcome my alcoholism, tendency for procrastination, utter dissatisfaction with most of my work, and tendency to use all my art supplies for body modification (hey, it makes me feel sexy) before it will ever become a reality.
    Is this a good idea?

  3. littlekingryan* says:

Have you ever thought of adding a chatroom? We could get rapid responses and generally bullshit a lot more and a lot quicker. Just a thought. I added one on Deviant Art real quick, which can be found here: http://chat.deviantart.com/chat/ComicCultureWarrior.

    • I haven’t really looked into that yet. Like I’ve told others before: between work, the videos, maintaining this blog and drinking heavily I really don’t have enough time for much else. I would like to incorporate more things like that and maybe eventually start up a forum of some sort but it’s just not feasible right now.

      J.

      • littlekingryan* says:

Just add a page with a link to a deviantart chat like the example above and let people come and go as they please. No extra work involved. Cool if you don’t want to, though. I just get a little tired of hitting refresh and checking the new posts in the “what the ccw nation says” sidebar. Maybe that’s just me, though.
By the way, my real name is Kip Drordy. Will you add me as a friend of Facebook? Can you water my crops? Leave a sign with a comment. Please!?

  4. kurumais says:

since ccw started on youtube ive been wondering besides ccw what are your must watch youtube vids?
for me its the onion news network 9 out 10 times they are hilarious and the 10th usually ok
and the unknown actors they use are terrific especially the 2 that do the morning show spoof
its a spoof of shows like the today show and gma. they are amazingly funny and i have never seen them before.
some of my favs from ONN are the recennt vid they did where 2 scientists teach a gorilla its going to die its so dark and wrong i just could not stop laughing
el jaguar bad boy of fencing
the mom stalking son on facebook and the kid that won the spelling be on the morning show spoof
another thing i like is they dont come out ever day so by the time you get a new one you are ready new
if havent seen them they are worth seeking out

so what do you guys watch besides ccw

    • littlekingryan* says:

mostly clips of R. Budd Dwyer press conferences

      • SMARTASS8 says:

        LOL!

I first saw that in one of the Faces Of Death movies, but listening to Jim Norton refer to it all the time, R. Budd Dwyer has become a household name for me.

OK, now I feel guilty for laughing about a video where a guy blows his head off.

    • phil says:

It took a minute for me to realize that the Onion was a parody news show. I think there charm is that they play everything so straight….if you stumble upon them, as I did one day; you’re like”wtf?”
As for besides ccw….the young turks..from time to time, I peep in on the Zuda channel and since I never got that convertor box for my tele….I catch as many wrestling clips as I can Mostly wwe, but occasionally tna.

    • Rob F says:

Comic book club also does very good comic reviews…and lots and lots of music videos because MTV, MTV2, VH1 and all the other music channels decided reality tv was better

      • ...dj...sweet says:

CBC sucks. They really do. The only one not annoying is Justin.

      • cballsack says:

No love for the Gorgeous Geeks?

        • SMARTASS8 says:

I’ve never even heard of them but I like those ladies. I never would have pegged them as comic fans if I ever saw them on the street. While I only agreed with 6 of their choices, they had a lot of enthusiasm and likability.

        • Edward2962 says:

Dig the Gorgeous geeks! I wish they’d put up more videos.I think it’s school and family obligations that slow them down.Diversity on the comics front never hurt. And they’re from DETROIT ROCK CITY!

      • SMARTASS8 says:

I used to watch Comic Book Club religiously but I luckily discovered CCW around the same time CBC started posting a lot less frequently. They seem like nice guys and they can definitely be funny like a group of friends hanging out, but Justin is usually the only one I agree with. Pete seems to be the little kid Marvel Zombie that I was in the 80’s but he never grew out of those same tastes. I can’t get a real handle on Alex, but he’s recommended a lot of books I’ve really disliked. Justin just seems more open minded than the other 2. He will give good reviews to DC, Marvel, and even Archie comics whereas the other 2 guys only seem to like Marvel comics and the occasional indie like Locke & Key(which I’ve been meaning to try for the longest time).

    • TheMSpot says:

sxephil he is pretty funny and informative, a hard line to walk but I think he gets it done. On my blog there is a post about other Youtube channels that I watch mainly comic book related, but are fairly good as well. About comic book club I didn’t put them on my list because I think Alex seems to be the more informed one of the trio (or at least has better taste then the other two). So, it’s not as good when he is not there.

      • kurumais says:

        i like sxephil as well

        • phil says:

What I don’t like about my namesake is on one of his channels where he’s speaking with celebs… he wusses out and goes all Billy friggin Bush, which is o.k. for BillyBush, but for Phil…its like he’s gotten himself fixed.
I’m not exactly a fan of Howard Stern, but when he’s an @$$, he’s an #$$ regardless of whether he’s talking to Alec Baldwin or Alec from down the block.
Other than that, I think he’s an alright guy.

          • SMARTASS8 says:

I have Howard Stern on “The Best Of Sirius” on the XM in my car, and he’s a lot more neutered than he used to be. He practically never says anything negative about other celebrities these days since he might not be able to hang with them in the Hamptons or name drop them on his show. I mean the guy helped Rosie O’Donnell get her own show on Sirius/XM. The old Howard wouldn’t be caught dead doing that.

            • Deemar says:

You should listen to Jamie Foxx’s radio show Foxxhole Radio, he was going hard at Howard Stern it was hilarious!

              • SMARTASS8 says:

I can’t listen to Jamie Foxx. I hate the guy. Not only does he not deserve his Oscar(it was an impersonation, not a performance), he’s a hypocrite. He called for the firing of Don Imus(who I’ve never listened to myself) after his “nappy headed ho” comment(a crude comment but he shouldn’t have been fired). Foxx later was caught making fun of Miley Cyrus(“get a gum transplant” and “get like Britney and do some heroin”) and his response was he was only joking and he’s the “black Howard Stern”. You can’t have it both ways asshole.

            • littlekingryan* says:

I still like Stern. He’s just mellowed a bit with age, he’s anything but “neutered”. Hell, he’s on satellite now so he can say whatever he wants. And he never says anything negative about other celebrities? Did you miss that whole Gabourey Sibidewhatsis debacle? Or how he rails on Ellen? He helped Rosie because she stopped being her phoney “Queen of Nice” bullshit and got real. Do you actually listen to the show?

              • Deemar says:

I listen most days, just can’t stomach the guy I’d rather Opie & Anthony or Foxxhole way funnier and to be honest hipper.

Jim Norton, Patrice O’neal, Rich Vos, Bill Burr and Luis CK is a murders row of comedy on O&A

                • littlekingryan* says:

I might have to check them out if i can find the torrents for it…i don’t subscribe

                  • Deemar says:

You can find most shows on youtube

Howard was good in his day, just think dude is truly truly losing his heart for radio.

                    • SMARTASS8 says:

Deemar, I totally agree with you about Howard “losing his heart for radio”. I’d french kiss a cat for the money he makes but he “screams” at Robin to finish the news as soon as he goes past the 4 hour mark(he works 16 hours a week for God’s sake!)

I also find O&A to have great taste in comedians. Lil’ Jimmy, Patrice, Rich Vos, Louis CK, Bill Burr and Robert Kelly are all great guests and funny as hell.

See Jose? I only disagree with 50% of the opinions on this blog. LOL!!!

              • SMARTASS8 says:

Swearing does not make one edgy. He also came back and said he wasn’t attacking “Precious” but was commenting on Hollywood(he never would have made a half hearted apology in the past). He’s only gone after Ellen since she “burned bridges” by saying unflattering things about him in magazines. The only reason he is “friends” with Rosie is due to his talentless wife getting to do some appearances on The View back when Rosie was still on it and Rosie’s admitted hatred of Jay Leno(“he stole everything from me” hoo hoo). All you have to do is look at the guest list for his wedding to see how much he’s changed(Barara Walters? Chevy Chase?).

O&A are much edgier(not that I really look for that in a radio show, but I’m just comparing them to how “edgy” Stern used to be). They will hang up on celebrity guests, insult them to their faces, and, if they find them interesting, will actually let them talk during an interview rather than talk over them just to ask “are those real” and “who have you had sex with”. The sad thing is Stern still feels “threatened” enough to stop some guests from going on O&A’s show(now that they are in the same building and work for the same company). I just call bullshit that Stern, due to his neuroses and narcissism, made it that O&A couldn’t mention him on their own show back during the KRock days when they were on the same channel. O&A, on the other hand, made friends with Ron & Fez when they came on after them.

Do I listen to Stern? Only during O&A commmercials, their vacation, or if I’ve already heard their show. The only reason I even have XM is when I bought my new car 6 years ago and it was part of the package(I just kept paying for it after the complementary year expired). At the time, I wish I had Sirius since I would rather have Stern than O&A(I used to listen to Stern pretty regularly before he left terrestrial radio but couldn’t make it past 5 minutes of O&A). As soon as there was the merger of XM & Sirius, I paid for 5 years up front of “The Best Of Sirius” just to get Stern(after 5 years, I will have actually paid less than if I never paid for “The Best Of Sirius” in the first place). I will admit that the production is great on Stern’s channels, but he’s become a bland, Hollywood phoney, namedropper(more than he used to be) who can’t even work 5 days a week even though he’s making 100 million a year. I’ve found out that I actually like O&A, and Ron & Fez, the other show the boys brought to their channel, is not only great, it isn’t shitty like Stern’s asskisser Bubba.

Don’t take this personal like I’m trashing you littlekingryan* since I not only used to listen to Stern & enjoy him, I even paid for his latest venture. I just don’t like him anymore.

    • tomstewdevine says:

I also watch CBC, I think Justin has the best taste though, Alex always likes things done by Loeb, and Pete doesn’t like anything that you have to think about. Other than that I mostly try to find good videos of different bands that I am going to see, I like live music as much as I love comics.

Oh and Nintendo 64 best Christmas ever, I will never get sick of that video.

      • Locusmortis says:

CBC are good…..well when I say good I mean bad, and not the good kind of bad.

Pete is especially retarded in his tastes, you can almost guarantee if he likes something it will be a complete load of pants.

      • cballsack says:

The CBC guys perform every Tuesday at some club in NYC. I keep meaning to go see them but I keep forgetting.

    • Venom829 says:

Besides CCW, the other comic book review club I watch on a regular basis is Ifanboy. Both on youtube, and on their website.

    • Fallows1985 says:

blowshimselfupdude is good to listen to, makes some good comments and good observations on the subjects he tooks about.

  5. IronMuskrat says:

A odd little movie, but I liked it. It was made by the same folks that did Ong Bak.

  6. phil says:

I was hopin’ I’d be up in time to kick off this new thread. (doggonnit, getting a full nights rest), but anyway heres something to kavetch about. Does anybody believe that in the forseeable future with the economy being what is and all…that DC and Marvel will decide to cut their losses and merge, making a true Amalgm!!
This is of course after svering ties because of creative differences with both Warner Bros. and Disney

    I can see it now:
    Superman; herald of Galactus
    Batman; enter Dr.Doom
Secret 6 ” the Norman Osbourne Identity”
    Fantastic 4 Darseid reborn

Of course, the flipdide is that you would have Quesada and Didio along with Johns and Bendis working in the same house, but hey.. you gotta take the bitter with the sweet, right?

    • Luiz de Mello says:

Well, both of their main universes are actually multi-universes (unless DC changed it again when I wasn’t looking), they could merge as a company but keep the universes of each branch separated, with an occasional crossover and character changes between universes. To avoid constant interaction they could just make it like the JLA vs Avengers crossover where the differences between both universes were so big that crossing from each other was troublesome for some travelers (like the Flash becoming depowered) and even hard to actually do it on a regular basis.

But to be fair, I can’t see that happening now. Maybe if DC and Marvel were still their own thing, but now I highly doubt.

  7. Morlock50 says:

Two interesting CBR articles about topics covered on CCW.

First is about the tendency of current comic book artists to photoshop their work:
    http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=25705

Second is about the eventual increase in all comics to four (and eventually five) dollars:
    http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2010/04/did-march-officially-usher-in-the-four-dollar-era/

    • kurumais says:

when i started reading comics they were a quarter now they are 4 bucks and someday 5 if they “live” that long
its sad fact of life for a comic fan
at first i was baffled about how E&J made such a big deal about the price increase considering all the price hikes they must have seen over their years of comic readership but if we are going to be paying 4 bucks companies should be held accountable to making their books worth every penny

and more and more digital comics are looking like a viable option for me cheaper less space taken up

      • phil says:

A quarter? I remember when they were bumped to 35 cents and saying; are they kidding? Then bump, bump, bump and now we’re at 3 & 4 bucks a pop and climbing. What’s worse, as newer generations are getting into comics, later and later…. they’re remembering the good ol’ days of when comics were a $1.95,or higher, so the price jumps are not such a big deal for many of them. So the spiraling downward continues!

        • Edward2962 says:

I remember being really young and feeling like a big shot cuz I got A WHOLE DOLLAR and was able to buy THREE WHOLE COMICS!Then they went to 35cents and I was mad cuz I had 30 cent left that I couldn’t spent cuz my mother wouldn’t let me buy candy or soda!

  8. DidioForever says:

    Hey,

This is directed at Elliot and J really, my YouTube username is gregSCC and I was talking to you about the Kickass movie in the comments thread for CCW 3.36

I’m sorry to drag this up again (You’re getting sick of me, right?, but I actually went to see the movie last night, and I thought it was great… I’d actually love to hear what you guys thought about it…But you probably won;t go and see it!

Basically, everything you probably hated about the comic i.e. the gratuitious gore (There is gore in this film but it’s watered down yet more effective and fun) or it’s cynical portrayal of teenagers (casual homphobia/sending sex tapes of themselves to eachother etc etc) – ALL of that crap was either absent or fixed for the screen and Kickass’ character was about 100 times more decent and likeable as a human being than he was in the comic.

There is NOTHING “sexualised” about Hit Girl (seriously, the Daily Mail is the UK’s answer to the O’Reilly Factor – ALWAYS take what they say with a pinch of salt), she’s the star of the film and like I said on youtube, if this was an anime flick people would be all over it without getting on such moral high horses.

Honestly, I don’t want to raise your expectations too high but it just pains me that you guys might miss out on such a fun film, one that’s been crafted for people like us, just because of it’s association with Millar and a handful of false preconceptions circulated by rightwing media.

I know you’re probably wondering ‘why it’s so important to me what CCW thinks’ but the fact that I subscribe to your videos and that I’m posting on CCW probably answers that doesn’t it?

Seriously, PLEASE just ‘unlearn’ the fact that it’s based on a Millar comic and go and see the film without prejudice. I know that at LEAST Elliot would enjoy it (!)

    Df(gregSCC)

(E, If you don’t, I’ll post a video of me doing any dance move of your choice in my Spiderman costume)

    • kurumais says:

i cant for the parent groups to get a load of this movie and hit girl

nice post btw i like how you stuck to your guns and did it in a calm thoughtful respectful way
when i get a chance i want to see this sucker and i dropped the book at issue 2

      • littlekingryan* says:

You’ve kind of sold me on it, as well. Of course, I may just have to see it thru less reputable channels.

    • Well, Didio4eva, before I read your comment there was a 0% probability of me going to see Kick Ass. After reading your comment there is now a 66% probability that I will go see Kick Ass.

      J.

  9. Bboyce109 says:

Hey Jose what do you think of the “we are the X-Men” teasers. How the next X-Men line up after Second Coming will be Magneto, Hope, Psylocke, Spider-man, Blade, and the Savage She-Hulk.

    • kurumais says:

i cant even wrap my head around this but nothing surprises me when it comes to the X franchises
most of the complaints i here about marvel and comics in general can thank 20 years of X books dominance in large part

      • DidioForever says:

I think Marvel are trying to blur the line between Avengers and X-Men even further so that eventually everything they release will just be one, never-ending crossover.
        KA-CHING!

    • Rob F says:

This has to be a joke…Marvel must have got pissed off by the Kirkman thing or something. I hadn’t heard about this until now and all I can say is what in the holy hell is going on?!? Spider-man is not an X-Man by any stretch of the imagination, and please no retcons that he is somehow a mutant. Blade is one of my absolute favorite characters and after a good run in the Captain Britain book they want to make him a joke again? I don’t really know anything about Savage She-Hulk but this has to be the most ridiculous X-Collection ever.

      • Locusmortis says:

I think the “we are the X-men” thing is getting to be a tired cliche already. trust marvel to take something relatively amusing and run it into the ground.

    • I think it’s all horseshit. It looks like Marvel is trying to make the X-Men the “new” New Avengers.

      J.

      • Deemar says:

I think it’s either a bait and switch (No way Spider-man is a X-man) or the non-mutant heroes in solidarity with the plight of mutants decide to become “X-men” to give them a postive boost in their public persona within continuity.

I can’t see it being any other way.

        • SMARTASS8 says:

I’ve seen a lot of fuck-ups when it comes to the characterization of Marvel’s characters since JoeyQ came on board. Maybe Bendis or Loeb told them that Spidey & She-Hulk are mutants. After seeing what they’ve done with Hawkeye & Scarlet Witch and Wolverine & Hulk respectively, I wouldn’t be suprised. A lot of the guys at Marvel who supposedly are long time “Zombies” seem to know as much about the Marvel Universe as my Mom does.

I also love how Marvel seems to realize that they can pretty much have a comic where Spider-Man is in the bathroom for 22 pages and some people will still buy it. They are so lazy when it comes to their teaser ads these days. Even though so many of DC’s teaser ads were for shitty series like Countdown & Battle For The Cowl, they seemed to put a lot of time into them by hiding “Easter eggs” and symbolism foretelling upcoming plot points. Marvel takes a page out of Bendis’ “bag of tricks” and takes unoriginal ideas(silohettes of hidden characters, bland images of a group of characters posing, tired catch phrases or quotes) and runs them into the ground where only the most devoted Marvel Zombie isn’t left screaming “enough already” before they are done. Even Kirkman & Image were able to make a poignant commentary on Marvel’s “crappy” ads without resorting to JoeyQ or Brevoort’s level of unprofessionalism or mean spiritedness.

      • Luiz de Mello says:

You mean the new new New Avengers, right? Cause the ‘new’ New Avengers are… the same old New Avengers cause the books is basically just resetting the numbers for no apparent reasons other than hype 😛

Now, to address the original question, I think it is pretty much Marvel’s way around the ‘we are now going to take a break on the events’. It has the hyped propaganda, it (apparently) has the mix of characters that motivates fans of said characters to buy some extra books featuring those characters, etc. All shades of khaki.

  10. kurumais says:

    who is going C2E2?

  11. Dan Griffin says:

JH Williams III named Co-Writer and Artist on the upcoming Batwoman series. He will draw the first Arc and then Amy Reeder will draw the second one. The other half of the writing team is Star Wars: Force Unleashed Writer, W. Haden Blackman.

Batwoman is set to start in July.

    Pretty cool interview with JH.

    A little redheaded nerdiness anyone?

  13. Venom829 says:

I saw How To Train Your Dragon in 2d on Monday, has anybody else seen it?

  14. Friedmiester says:

JH Williams II is drawing the new Batwoman series!! Thank the heavens!

  15. Ashaman_18 says:

Anybody up for a middle school rendition of scarface?

  16. TheMSpot says:

Can someone tell me what is up with Joe Kelly’s Bad Dog that is a series I have been looking forward to it, but I don’t even know if its out or not (whats not to like about choppers and werewolves).

    • TheMSpot says:

Take that Chopper Zombie whoever thought that was a good idea for a graphic novel should go wherever they sent Frank Miller after All-Star Batman and The Spirit (hopefully to a farm up state where he was made into the glue that is used in the binding of shitty trade collections).

    • I think only a few issues of Bad Dog came out and it hasn’t finished yet. It has been months since the last issue.

      J.

  17. Dan Griffin says:

The Full Secret Avengers line-up has been shown!

    http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?p=10959784#post10959784

    • kurumais says:

      thanks dan
i liked our speculative line ups better

nova is off in deep space but comes home for secret missions?

      • Dan Griffin says:

I believe in the last couple of issues of the nova series, DnA have fore-shadowed Nova coming back to earth.

    • Venom829 says:

I actually want to read it. I like the line-up. Steve Rodgers as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a perfect choice. And I like both Brubaker and Deodato. I think Brubaker tweeted that there may be 3 more Avengers tho’ which is why they leaked the promo.

    • Edward2962 says:

Does Steve’s suit sorta look like the Fighting American from the 50’s? Or is it just me?

    • phil says:

I just checked ’em out, Marvel should have kept them a secret. And seriously, what’s with Steve Rogers? Either make him Cad or aShield guy. What’s with this trying to bridge the two?

      • Edward2962 says:

No worse than when Hal Jordan was the Spectre and they drew him with elements of his GL costume.I mean, you’re a ghost who’s the hand of God’s vengeance…why do you need a mask?

        • phil says:

Yeah….what trips me out is every few years it seems ppl draw Hulk bigger and bigger. Jack Kirby Hulk about 6’10 about 400lbs Herb Trimpe Hulk about 7′ about 800lbs Sal Buscema Hulk about 7″ 1ooolbs Dale Keowne Hulk about 8′ about 1200lbs Gary Frank Hulk about 12′ 1500lbs and he’s bigger now and yet somehow his #@%$&^^!!! pants stay on!!!

          • Edward2962 says:

Ha! Dude I gained 15 lbs in the last year and I can barely keep my pants fastened. What the Hulk’s secret? Or is it his shame? What’s those gamma rays REALLY do to you? Why’s he REALLY mad all the time? Hmmm….

  18. Smallmaniac says:

Am I the only one not completely sold on Joss Whedon directing the Avengers movie? I love most all of his work, but I just can’t completely wrap my head around him directing such an epic movie.

    • kurumais says:

i can see where you are coming from i think joss will always work better with orginal material but joss has aknack for getting great stuff at of an ensemble if you watch firefly for instance the best scenes are the cast all together around the diner table
buffy angel and dollhouse all built up a great team feel even though they were supposed to star one character

i think he will be great with making sure every character gets there place in the script/ team/movie

      • Smallmaniac says:

That’s a great point. This movies needs someone who can balance multiple characters well without focusing too much on one and forgoing the others. Especially in this movie, there is a special need for focus on all the superheroes/superstars rather than the most popular or most liked. Your point about Firefly is good, but his Astonishing Xmen run showed how he can balance an ensemble cast that he didn’t create.

I also really hope they get Norton on as Hulk.

    • Deemar says:

Well there aren’t many women so far in this movie, that might be an issue for Whedon.

I think he can pull it off though, plus he likes to use actors he’s worked with before could Nathan Fillion be far behind?

      • kurumais says:

well i guess i figured it going to be kind of ultimate since that book seemed very hollywood friendly
so which gals ar4e going to in it? the wasp? black widow/scarlet johansen?

angel had a big male cast vs female joss did fine with that

        • Deemar says:

Black Widow without a doubt, Angel wasn’t run by Whedon.

          • kurumais says:

joss had 111 writing credits and 7 director credits as well as executive producer on angel and when he talks about it sounds like he was very involved
i think anything out of mutant enemy is going to have joss’s stamp on it

btw joss whedon is going to direct an episode of glee which will guest star neil patrick harris
i should have seen that coming

  19. Mike F says:

    I can’t believe I bought Brightest Day #0.

Never has dialogue felt so half-ass rushed. Seriously Johns, I like you but that felt so low-grade, and OHHH that BRILLIANT plot with Maxwell Lord!

    -__-

    I can’t handle spending $4 twice a month for this…

    • generaldark says:

      1. its not going to be a 3.99 book. 2. its a zero issue. do we honestly expect much? 3. there were good and bad moments. i still dont like how deadman is alive. i thought it was a ok issue overall. i like how jonns is already working on the fuck up robinson cause with blowing up star city. this was all to set up the branching out of other brightest day titles. plus you got 12 charecters to cover so clearly you cant expect to have a non rushed conversation between them all. it would be nice if we had a clear plot tho.

      • Mike F says:

Taking away one dollar doesn’t make it any cheaper. Its twice a month for the same thing with a bunch of tie-in’s. I just got SOME money back from all the tie-in’s and Blackest Nite itself. Events lose their meaning when they happen so often. The impact isn’t as strong and when GOOD events happen in the future, they are under-appreciated. The art was fine and the story wasn’t the worst, but it still put me to sleep with a cliche dialogue and a very predictable ending.

I’m just saying – there are wiser ways to sell an event. Maybe wait just a bit more then bring in the Brightest Day.

And to answer your question about ‘do we honestly expect much?’ – at this point, absolutely. This thing has been promoted as much as any other Johns comic. And the fate of just about all the top characters (major and minor in the DCU) are at stake here. It has to be good or its gonna fuck up the DCU really bad. But, I respect your outlook, its gonna run for 25 issues so there’s plenty of time for some epic moments to come.

        • Mike F says:

and the very fact, nay the unbelievably ridiculous idea that Maxwell Lord made the world forget who he is the absolute worst fucking idea I’ve ever heard and who ever thought of it should be fired for mentioning it. No joke. That’s beyond crap my friend, and I know you know it.

          • kurumais says:

how are the hawks covered? they are the only thing im interested in this
            i dont mind spoilers

            thanks

          • SMARTASS8 says:

Mike F, I’m not arguing with your hating Johns as a writer, but you do realize both Marvel & DC have used the cliche of making the entire world forget things several times before right? I can understand saying Johns isn’t being extremely original with that plot point, but he can’t be blamed for it being “the worst fucking idea” you’ve ever heard.

            • You’re right, the worst idea I ever heard was DC continuity changing due to Superboy Prime punching a wall. Who thought of that again? 🙂

              J.

              • SMARTASS8 says:

Your mama! LOL! I got nothing. I just picture you and Mike F standing next to each other exclaiming “Geoff Johns bashing, activate!”

I will agree Prime’s wall punch was a stupid idea. I still don’t find it as dumb as Waid’s “Hypertime” since most readers and a lot of DC’s writers couldn’t even explain that one. Having said that, I’ll still take an awful in story explanation for a continuity change than just pretending what came before never happened ala Byrne’s Doom Patrol or Hudlin’s Black Panther.

                • Mike F says:

                  haha, “Johns Bashing, Activate!”

I don’t hate Johns, I’m just not crazy about him anymore. When he wrote for Wally West he was great! And I can’t picture anyone else writing Green Lantern. But as of this year, I’ve disliked more of his work than liked it (Flash:Rebirth, Blackest Night, and now Brightest Day #0) but yeah anytime a writer uses the “make the world forget” concept my respect goes down. Even if Grant Morrison did it, I’m sorry, I love Grant, but I’d probably love him less if he wrote that idea.

                  • Luiz de Mello says:

Maybe by Morrison it would be good. I mean, that idea is a crazy idea, but in his hands that would become like many times crazier, maybe it would be so totally insane it would be good.

        • generaldark says:

i was saying for a zero issue do u expect much?? i dont know maxwell lord so i dont care for him. i like the dove and hawk scene tho.

      • Stamps says:

I thought it was a pretty good issue as well. It was quite a few pages for $3.99.

    • I’m right there with you Mike. It was mostly shit. I may have to review it later this week.

      J.

      • generaldark says:

you know jose you are probally the most random person to when it comes to what comics you like and dont like. lol no offense or nothin.

        • How’s this for random: Even though I thought BD was mostly shit I actually liked Flash #1 after thinking I would completely hate it. Suck on that. 😛

          J.

          • generaldark says:

jeebus man wtf????? i did enjoy that too. of course right? lol

              • Pobra says:

Actually Flash #1 was REALLY quite good, I also expected to dislike it, much the way I’ve disliked every other Flash comic I’ve ever read. I can’t believe how much better it was than the first issue of Rebirth.

                • Venom829 says:

Francis Manuapal comapared to Ethan Van Sciver is really going to give this baby a big boost.

                • TheMSpot says:

I think it was good, it wasn’t Rebirth so that was a plus, but it will probably fall apart since Johns has so much on his plate, and 2010 is the fall of Geoff Johns. I just hope he can keep up the pace (please, I know) but, I don’t know how much it stands on it’s own without Secret Files and Origin. And at least I got a free ring out of it. Another thing, it seemed a little lacking for 3.99 maybe a second feature would have helped and not a preview even if it was Zatanna.

                  • TheMSpot says:

Question: where does Barry keep his cell phone with that skin tight costume, and how long before that “I’ll be late” joke gets old. Also, with the costume, where do the clothes that he is wearing go when he pops his costume out of his ring. I guess I should of read the Secret Files and Origins issue, can you tell that I’m not the biggest Flash fan. But I’m trying to get into superheros with actual superpowers (unlike Batman and Captain America which are the characters that I typically follow) and doing superheroics.

                • Mike F says:

Doesn’t it feel strange just hearing a guy talk to someone who should be dead and they both know it – hell, the whole DCU knows it?

Something about it just seems really ridiculous. I thought the overall issue was decent, but I’m just so sick of these dead heroes coming back. But I guess it doesn’t matter…

                  • SMARTASS8 says:

I don’t think it’s strange for a superhero to be talking to someone who should be dead. Each of the JLA’s “Big 8″(I always include Green Arrow in the “Big 7”) have been dead at one point or another. Now their secret identity is another story. Was Barry Allen supposed to have been dead suring all this time since Crisis or was he just missing like Clark Kent after Superman was “killed” by Doomsday?

          • phil says:

After you’re saying that you actually liked a Barry Allen/Flash, Jose…I’m almost tempted to pick it up…..almost. I just can’t get with the ressurected deal.
If anything pushes me away from the big 2, that’ll be it! Look out Rasl, here I come.

        • Deemar says:

Split personality, he doesn’t realize his alter ego is a Jeph Loeb fan.

          😉

    • littlekingryan* says:

I thought the Deadman “voiceover” in the red captions was at times clunky and trite, generally overwrought. It’s become a shorthand device that screams laziness. On the subject of lazy writing, how about Harkness quoting Shawshank Redemption practically line-for-line…? I thought that was a bit weak. Not to mention cornBALL.

  20. Mike F says:

And why is Elektra joining the X-Men??????? Hasn’t she died like multiple times??? I get so confused trying to keep up with this shit man. I love comics and I love the escapism they give me but its getting annoying trying to keep up with things I have to pay for each week.

    • Venom829 says:

Apparently nonbody cares about continuity at Marvel. Jeph Loeb has influenced them all, (Jeff Parker, Dan Slot are the exceptions).

      • Mike F says:

I really just don’t get it. I want to get it tho. I wanna know what’s the history of it all but I really am confused as to why Elektra is still alive after dying I know twice! We… I think. Jeez, I just feel like its getting harder to keep up -_-

  21. kurumais says:

what about conan obrien on TBS man thats a weird place to end up i think

first i think there are waaaaaaay too many talk shows on TV now and they have evolved into new movie pushing platforms and everyone seems the same so i am not going to watch his show no matter what channel its on but i would like to know the behind the scenes of the deal that got him there

    • TheMSpot says:

Apparantly he wanted to go to Fox but they couldn’t clear the deal with all their affliates, and so TBS offered him 11:00pm but he refused at first because he didn’t want to do to Lopez what Leno did to him. According to the story Lopez called him up and persuaded him to join TBS (probable that Conan would be a good lead in for him). Anyway I think Conan is getting 10 million out of the deal.

  22. Dan Griffin says:

uh-oh, Trouble ahead for Marvel’s Cosmic Line. It looks like Marvel is giving the boot to DnA after the lastest Mini-event.

Rumor has it Loeb and Bendis both have there eyes set on the Cosmic Line.

    • Deemar says:

For fucks sake do those two idiots get everything they want?

Let’s nudge two strong writers who brought a negleted part of the MU back from the brink and give it to Bendis/Loeb and kick DnA outta a job. Great! just great!

Quesade doesn’t even like cosmic stuff.

    • Venom829 says:

      What is DnA?

      • megamanx4ever says:

        Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning

        • Deemar says:

Saviors of the Marvel Cosmic Universe

Now were gonna get Rocket Raccoon in a coffee shop with Groot talking about how their going too do something for 6issues and not do it

          • Venom829 says:

And try to make a Sentry/Red Hulk crossover. 😦

            • Deemar says:

The universe will explode from the awfullness.

Seriously, it’s like Bendis and Loeb can’t leave other writers alone to do their thing.

Dan Slott kicked off Avengers, DnA is gonna lose the cosmic stuff, what’s next?

              • Venom829 says:

Mark Millar and Khoi Pham on Daredevil 😦

              • Locusmortis says:

I just read MA 31….holy fuck that was a bad comic. Because of the appalling art I could only stand to read the last 6 or 7 page and Dan Slott officially jumped the shark with Hank Pyms suggestion to Loki…dumbest comics moment in ages.

                • Locusmortis says:

                  fuckit, I meant MA 34

                  • littlekingryan* says:

Ahh, more of that Pham goodness. If Marvel wants to kick people off books, how about those who’ve earned it? I’m looking at you, Koi Pond.

                • Luiz de Mello says:

To be fair, I don’t have much of a problem with that part of the plot. Since his return Loki has always looked to be a dubious person rather than the traditional ‘I am Loki bwhauhauahuaha’. At least to mortals, like Pym, I don’t recall Loki’s more evil actions being really known anyway, just his mischief, and personal disputes with his brother. Nothing that classifies him as a ‘lost case’. Loki did put the team together and help later on as ‘Scarlet Witch’, and then tried to keep the facade for as long as he could, while never doing or attempting to do anything evil. From where Pym was standing there was a chance for a mutually beneficial arrangement without an unacceptable price.

What I do have a problem is that the arc had to be rushed so it could be done before the Ultron arc and the cancellation of the book. The way it was done made the whole thing shallow and poorly developed. The disbanding especially, one would think that if the leader was the problem they could at least consider kicking Pym and getting a new leader instead of scattering immediately.

But hey, that still can’t be the dumbest comic moment for ages. Loeb, Bendis & Co. are still writing, and we know that they are always getting better in what they do, and what they do ain’t nice.

          • Edward2962 says:

            LOL!

          • Rob F says:

I consider DnA to be the be all end all on any cosmic stories…their Legion of Superheroes Stuff was epic!!!

          • Smallmaniac says:

It wouldn’t surprise me if RR jumped out of the pages and took them out just for being awful writers. I don’t promote violence, but who can control a talking raccoon?

            • kurumais says:

holy crap where did you see this? nova is a decent book but guardians of the galaxy is terrific its in my top 5 books every month

but we have seen this hundred times before quality doesnt matter sales do its the nature of the beast

              • Smallmaniac says:

I’m not talking about the current writers. I’m talking about Bendis and Loeb if they move to cosmic marvel. But I personally think they’ll thin it’s below them.

    • littlekingryan* says:

This is not good. Is this confirmed, or just a rumor? Point me toward your sources, Dan.

anyone read bprd king of fear 4… holy fucking shit.

this comic gets rarely talked about but this final arc in the triology started way back with the first bprd is going to insane places.

hellboy also wrapping up their big trilogy soon with the storm. everyone on the cbr boards are saying they are gonna end up fighting one another. abe-king of fear controlling reluctantly the frogs, subteraneans and assorted monsters. liz sherman protecting the humans and leading the army as the black godess. and hellboy- now rightfull king of england controlling all the undead and witches and other paranormal entities. over controll of the world.

    fuck i love this comic.

I love Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! But I won’t recommend it because it’s just too weird for most people. I don’t think it gets strange enough. It does manage to make me laugh more in 12 minutes than an entire hour and a half of SNL does.

  30. mbell028 says:

Hey does anyone else’s comic shop on here use Comixology? My local shop starting using it about a month and a half ago it makes it a lot easier for me to adjust what I want and don’t want on the website, but the guys at the shop keep fucking up my pull. The guys at the shop are really cool, but almost every week there’s a problem with my pull. 2 weeks ago I was supposed to get Unknown Soldier 18 I added it to my pull two weeks before that, but they didn’t pull it for me and in fact didn’t even order any copies of it. This wasn’t a big deal because I just asked them to order it for me so it wasn’t too big of a deal. This week really pissed me off though they didn’t have a copy of Chew for me, which I added to my pull over a month and a half ago and for the second month in a row they forgot to pull Secret Six for me so I had to go grab it, which turned out to be the last issue they had in stock. I was wondering if anyone on here had problems with comixology and I just wanted to have a rant because I was a bit frustrated with it.

ps. Did anybody here read the preview for IZOMBIE 1 It was in the back of the latest issue of Daytripper and it seemed pretty intesting plus issue one will be for $1. I don’t know much about Chris Roberson, but the preview was pretty interesting.

I’m seeing it later tonight. I’m glad I’m not buying the ticket 😉 but in all honesty, I’m excited. Millar didn’t direct or produce it so there’s a good chance it’ll still pull thru as fun. Still, I’m not expecting much. Like I said, I didn’t buy the ticket, so a chance to see a bad movie for free is always welcomed. I can laugh at it if Nick Cage doesn’t make me laugh to begin with.

      • Mike F says:

Nick Cage hasn’t done a good movie since “bringing out the dead”

yeah, and its a shame no one has seen that one either.

        • Edward2962 says:

I saw Nick’s “Bad Lt:Port New Orleans” this weekend.I was enjoying it up until the end and I was like WTF?!? I actually want to see it again cuz I’m sure I mis-interpreted it.

    • Ironmuskrat says:

And the fanboys are already attacking Roger Ebert for his review, calling him old and out of touch with today’s youth, whatever the fuck that is suppose to mean. The internet has become such a mosh pit today that everything is a point of contention to fight over. Even people’s opinions are dissected and judged correct or incorrect, forgetting that an opinion is just that, how a person feels about something, you either like it or you don’t like it.

Roger Ebert had the guts to give an honest review of Kick-Ass and fat turds like Harry Knowles had to make a post on his site arguing that Ebert was wrong for not liking the movie. How the hell is someone wrong for not liking a movie, sometimes the rabid fanboys drive me nuts. I really got a kick out of the people ripping Ebert who haven’t even seen the movie yet! they are ripping a guy that actually saw the movie and didn’t like it, but they are saying he is wrong based on.. what? the comics? the trailers?

Well, that turned into a bit of a rant.. sorry about that. Whew! I need to relax and have a beer.

Oh, and i do hope that everyone that goes to see Kick-Ass enjoys it, and whether or not you like it I will respect your opinion either way =)

      • Harry Knowles is a joke. He is the perfect person to lead the fanboy rage.

        J.

        • ...dj...sweet says:

I know it’s shallow to judge someone based on how they look, But I wouldn’t want to share an opinion with that oaf.

      • Stamps says:

I greatly dislike Harry Knowles. I don’t read him that much because I find him so annoying, but from what I have seen he seems to be just the stereotype of a “fanboy” nowadays that people like Mark Millar markets all their shit too. All that Mark Millar bullshit like Kick Ass is so douchie that its tailor made to fit him.

      • Deemar says:

Seriously I’d pay for a book you write

Ebert is entitled too his opinion

      • phil says:

What’s discouraging is I don’t know whether the folks that were saying that Ebert was out of touch with today’s youth were wrong or not. A lot of today’s youth will swallow the pablum if its put in front of them and will curse those who don’t climb aboard.
One thing I don’t get,I.M., is Ebert’s a reviewer….as such, why was it gutsy for him to do what he’s always been doing? I feel for the guy’s situaton and wish him and his the best, but reviews are what he does. About that beer, crack a cold one for me, will ya?

Half price books is great for trades. That’s where I get a lot of mine.

      • littlekingryan* says:

I didn’t even make it to the trade section I was so consumed by the singles bin. I hear you, though, I love getting trades there. Also cool that you never know what you’re going to find because of their rotating stock.

        • Venom829 says:

I will always prefer trades to singles, since the trade contains the whole story, and yes, the singles are GREAT, but the trade has it all in 1.

          • littlekingryan* says:

i love ’em both. they each have their own charms. singles for individual covers, lettercols, other backmatter. trades for “all in 1”, lack of ads, general sturdiness and portability.
i do love displaying those individual floppies in my spinner rack, though…

            • Deemar says:

I’m primarily a single issue guy, but over the last 5yrs I’ve been buying more and more trades.

I just wish the Big 2 would use the slimline format ala Fell/Cassanova. It would help on cost of single issues and artist could finish a book on time with fewer pages.

              • littlekingryan* says:

From what I’ve read of Fraction interviews, the Slimline thing was kind of a failure. I’m not sure we’ll be seeing it again any time soon.

                • Deemar says:

He said it was a failure mainly due to his lack of name recognition and limited financing.

With a large corporation behind you I think slimline could work.

          • Luiz de Mello says:

Depends, some trade don’t have the whole story. For example, imagine when Siege TPB comes out, it will have no story whatsoever 😛
