Gunbusters, nice. I always like Mikimoto’s character designs.

  2. kurumais says:

so the new spider man game trailer shattered dimensions? what did you think?

    • kurumais says:

wait the went to a comic con but didnt want to meet with any of the guests or do anything there? thats a great idea does he go to concerts for bands that he has no desire to hear their music? or restaurants he wont eat the food from as well?
ive been to the philly con a few times it was pretty good lots of space
philly is a pretty nice town plus i had a cheesesteak from either patsy’s or ginos while down there

35 bucks for one day is quite a price tag though

      • Wizard World Cons suck…hard. I actually thought MSpot was being quite kind in his review of it. Wizard KILLED any interest I ever had in comic conventions but then thankfully C2E2 brought it back. Fuck Wizard and their shite conventions. I will never set foot in one again.

        J.

      • TheMSpot says:

Like I said, I was in search of a comic not to pay for a picture with Z-list celebrity. I don’t live far from philly, yes I have had a cheesesteak from both Pat’s and Gino’s they are good. I like Gino’s steaks because he doesn’t chop up the steak like Pat’s, but I don’t like the decor of Gino’s it is so gaudy with the neon lights and the giant cheesesteak on the roof. If you want a food cheesesteak place I would recommend Tony Luke’s, Rick at the Reading Terminal, but I don’t write a food blog I write a comic blog, and that is why I went to the con for comics (now I am repeating myself). Anyway, there are other spaces at that convention center where they could of held it with more space hopefully when their down with the construction it will move to a bigger space or use multiple rooms instead of shoehorning it all into one hall, but that is just my opinion.

    • Insideman says:

Someone should post that link on Bleeding Cool.

      It should be REQUIRED READING.

    • Stamps says:

seems like M spot had a blast 😦
      that sucks

  3. kurumais says:

the sheild mini reminds me soooo much of planetary in a good way

    • That second issue was really good.

      J.

      • kurumais says:

did you notice on page 3 nostrodomonus pulled an oracle of sybille from dr who?
with the hands over the eyes with the tatoos on the back of them ?
what else has dustin weaver drawn? because he is pretty darn good
        thanks

        • did shield 1 have to go to second and third printing beacause i picking up 2 today but i really want to get 1 i ordered mine way back when you guys reiewed it along with turf 1 which i loved

          • Pobra says:

SHIELD #2 was amazing. And it continues the trend of witchy occult shit that seems to be appearing in all my favorite comics these days. See Spider-Man: Fever #3 🙂 The last page cracked me up.

          • SHIELD #1 did go into a second printing and is sold out. There IS a third printing coming out in the next few weeks. There is also a SHIELD #1 Director’s Cut being released soon. You should be able to get one of those hopefully.

            J.

    • Stamps says:

Damn I just realized I forgot to pick that one up. Looks like I’m getting it next week.

  4. Insideman says:

Hands down the funniest fucking show on TV.

“Party Down” on Starz. Now in its second 12 ep season. If you don’t know it– then please rent it, buy it download it, Netflix it… whatever:

  5. Stamps says:

So for once I’m up with the resident night owls of CCW. Most times I’m too much of an old lady to stay up late. (which is really sad because I’m not that old) I’m getting caught up on Doctor Who since I fell off the wagon a while back. I’m in the middle of Flesh and Stone. I like this one, these Angels are SUPER creepy.

      • Stamps says:

Thanks for the encouragement Jose 🙂 soon I’ll be getting around to getting the manga you suggested -Black Lagoon.

So tonight I learned that stone angels turning their heads is EXTREMELY disconcerting.

I’m really liking the new Doctor now. I had my doubts(I’m still pissed about the green sonic screwdriver)but he’s got me at about 95% won over. 5% of the time Max Smith throws me off a little with his acting. Now on to the next episode.

    • Deemar says:

Welcome to the Night of Owls

    • Insideman says:

I agree they’re creepy here… But am I the only one who thought they were 1,000,000 times more creepy when they first appeared with David Tennant?

Overall, I felt like the show’s new producer (also the creatures’ creator) was dragging them into this story for no discernible good reason– other than they were so well received the first time they appeared.

      • Stamps says:

I don’t know for some reason the angels seemed way more creepy in this one for me personally. Maybe because it’s be a while since I’ve seen them so I forgot how creepy they were.

        • Deemar says:

The Angel are way creepier now, the way they talked throw that soldier and now they actually kill.

The whole idea for the angel freaks me out

        • I am going to throw my hat in here and say I liked the Angels more this time around also.

          J.

          • Deemar says:

Dude they were way more of a threat.

Hell they should be the main enemy instead of the Daleks, those things are way too silly to take seriously

            • Insideman says:

Okay, I agree they were much more of a threat this time. Nuclear explosions trump killing a few people.

I will also admit that the “guy” calling the Doctor on the communicator was creepy too.

I just thought the first appearance was creepier. It had a more “haunted house” feel.

Come to think of it, I feel we’re almost comparing apples & oranges here. So, I agree that they are still very, very creepy.

  6. rush says:

Any of you guys picking up Dodgem Logic?

    • Deemar says:

You know what’s weird I’ve never used a phone booth in my 30 odd yrs of life.

    • Insideman says:

      Fucking -A- Hilarious!

I did this EXACT same thing one time. I was a teenager skiing in the mountains. I wanted to call my girlfriend but my parent’s were really giving me a hard time about her… So I got in my Dad’s car and drove down this ridiculously slick, icy, snow covered mountain road to a pay phone (I went into a slide and came within inches of sliding off the side of the mountain)… Only to find I couldn’t get my call through AND the phone had eaten all my money!

I literally started banging the plastic receiver against the metal phone… BAM! BAM! BAM! Then I yanked the receiver off the phone, kicked open the telephone booth door and threw the phone (with metal cord) in the snow.

Then I looked up and saw a County Sheriff’s car sitting across the street.

Needless to say, the Hulk was not with me that night.

      Dammit.

  7. phillip says:

    lol anyone read batman 700??????

  8. Stamps says:

Okay I’m calling it a night, good night CCW nation.

  9. Deemar says:

    G’night stamps

  10. rush says:

This what you were thinkin of Jose?

    • YES!!!!!

I have all of my vhs tapes put away in boxes so I couldn’t look to see the title. You are the fucking man Rush!

I can now go to bed peacefully tonight. Seriously, that would have bugged me all night. 🙂

      J.

  11. Alright, I think I am going to turn in for the night too. I have a full, rough day of selling comics ahead of me tomorrow. It’s enough to kill a lesser man.

Talk to ya tomorrow D and Rush.

    J.

  12. Deemar says:

    I’m out

  13. kurumais says:

did you see the promo for the new aqualad on cbr? the comments cracked me up
i loved young justice i hope the cartoon is decent

    • Edward2962 says:

Wow.I can’t believe so many ppl thought they were being clever with “Blaqualad”. On the other hand,I kinda agree with the ppl who said he’s safe as along as the show airs, but a yr after cancellation…look out!

  14. Mike F says:

Damn, I missed that epic Anime battle earlier 😦 Is it too late for me to release my secret weapon?

  15. phil says:

This is one of the few anime that I’ve seen. I even purchased the 4th episode. Anime’s not my thang, but this was pretty enjoable. Not including stuff like Speed Racer and Kimba, the only other anime or anime-esque stuff that Ive seen is Ninja Scroll and Afro Samurai. Does MTV’s Aeon Flux count?

  16. Arrrrrgggggghhhh….there are TWO issues of Amazing Spider-Man shipping next week. And one of the issues is $3.99. God damn…if I were buying that book I would be a little pissed.

    J.

  17. rush says:

This predates the pathetic live action movie.

    • SMARTASS8 says:

I have to disagree with you about the Starship Troopers movie. It may not be Oscar worthy(although that doesn’t really even mean much anymore) and it may feature one of the worst actors to have ever starred in a theatrical movie(Casper Van Dien), but I find it an underrated flick with some amusing political satire in it. It also had a topless Dina Meyer and “Doogie Howser” as a psychic who wore a Nazi style trenchcoat.

  18. TheMSpot says:

So, is anyone going to watch this…

    • kurumais says:

love patlabor one the smartest best written animes
i showed the 2 movies to a couple of japanese buddies who werent otakus
      they loved them especially 2

    • Mike F says:

Aaaaaanime Oooooverrrloooad! Must put on Evangelion Headphones and blast Code Geass OST to regain consciousness~

  19. Insideman says:

TheMSpot- I just posted the link to your con review on Bleeding Cool:

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/forums/showthread.php?18653-Queuing-For-Philly/page2

Hope you don’t mind. If you do– tell me and I’ll erase it!

    • TheMSpot says:

No, I don’t mind at all.

    • TheMSpot says:

As a matter of fact, I just updated that post based on some of the feed back on the CCW blog. Trust me, they were little grammatical fixes, nothing big, and not watered down. If I get any feed back from those over at Bleeding Cool is that I was too negative and that I hate comics. Whatever, I have my thoughts and there is a lot of industry bullshit that I don’t like to put up with, and that is the favorite part for most fans. It’s just not for me I am a person of simple taste and I like comic books and reading comics. If I have to go to a con it’s for the comics nothing more, nothing less. Like I said in my post I was in search of a comic book and I found it, and I’m glad because I can finally finish the story.

    • TheMSpot says:

I looked over that forum, and I looked at the images that Rick Johnston posted on the forum. The last images of the convention center is interesting. Because that is one of the three locations at the center that I would have been fine with if they held the con in that area it would have been a different story. That area is used in the car show that is held there. I’ve been there for the car show, and there was more walking room for the car show than for Wizard World.

  20. generaldark says:

I had a dream tht CCW was a cartoon. it was weird. i thought the show was alwaise a cartoon and thats wy it takes elliot a long time to post videos but then i woke up and realized everything i saw was a lie!!! 😥

    • cballsack says:

Doesn’t have quite the same resonance as Martin Luther King’s speech, but it sounds like a worthy dream nonetheless.

  21. Mr.Wrestling says:

Wow and I didnt think that I could get more upset than yesterday when I looked at the top 100 comics for May…..but I saw something today that was even worse..

Looks like the WWE has fucked up majorly and released Bryan Danielson today.

Story going around now is that WWE management thought Danielson went too far in the NXT Invasion on RAW last week and was inappropriate for PG programming

  22. Mike F says:

Amazing AMV. Even tho Near didn’t get much attention… Still great work!

  23. kurumais says:

    superheroine darna from the philipines

no clue about her just got a kick out of it

  24. Stamps says:

So is anyone excited about the return of True Blood tomorrow?

I just love HBO, they consistently make good shows.

  25. vegedge says:

anyone else a fan of outlaw star?

the only anime i really liked. used to watch it on toonami before they dropped it halfway through the big story pay off.

  26. Mike F says:

lol, I just spent so much time trying to find this song from the Death Note OST. When I first saw the show years back I remember always loving this particular track.

  27. kurumais says:

no real time movie reviews this week?

    • cballsack says:

Ha. I watched a couple movies in the past few days. One was an old Donnie Yen flick called Flash Point. It was okay. It had a great MMA-style fight at the end. And I saw Blue Velvet for the very first time. What a pretentious piece of crap. I felt like I was watching an arthouse movie parody.

      • Edward2962 says:

A friend of mine gave me a copy of Blue Velvet on VHS not long after it first came out.I remember liking it at the time, but I haven’t seen it well over ten years.

Your reaction tho reminds me of when I saw Godard’s Breathless for the time.I thought “This movie has everything ppl make fun of when they mock old foreign films.” The random philosophizing, jerky editing,”symbolism”,B+W,etc…all that was missing was a sad clown.

But I guess it’s like anything in entertainment..What seems avant guard one year becomes cliche the next.

  28. Heck says:

Anyone else love this movie as much as I do?

  29. TheGateJester says:

Has anyone seen these guys. Its freakin amazing.

  30. AvS says:

    ‘Tetris vs. Contra’:

  31. Insideman says:

Hey, here’s a review that everyone will “enjoy”. It came in my weekly release list email from Graham Crackers Comics!

Do ya think somebody might have OVER-ORDERED on this title?

    Nemesis #2
    story by Mark Millar
    art by Steve McNiven
    reviewed by Gary Owens

It can’t get any better. Off the success of Kick-Ass comes Nemesis, as Millar ups the ante with explosive action. The concept is simple; super-criminal Nemesis wants to ice the detective who got his parents. Avenging parent’s fall…doesn’t that sound familiar? In Nemesis, Millar creates the perfect anti-Batman, from the pure white uniform to the wonderfully constructed plan to win the day. Except the detective against Nemesis appears just as smart, and just as devoted, as Nemesis. Who will win? The first two issues hit all of the marks, with McNiven’s artwork striking it right, and if the rest of the series is like this it will become an instant classic. For the Kick-Ass fans, you gotta try this one. I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t make it to the movie theater, too.
    $2.99 / MARVEL Comics
    10 out of 10 Grahams

  32. Insideman says:

    Fucking hell is right!

    • kurumais says:

somebody i know could say enough good things about but he likes the current ultimates too
      differnt strokes

      • Insideman says:

kurumais– I get the “different strokes” thing completely and I am certainly not condemning someone for liking a book that I don’t.

But the review I posted came packaged in an email from a RETAILER– and I do believe there was a different agenda for printing a glowing review for something that most think is regurgitated, sophomoric crap.

Retailers that push every new thing as HOT and GREAT are a dime a dozen. Retailers that tell the truth are a rare and increasingly dying breed.

        • kurumais says:

i see your point but a retailer pushes a bad book what happens? a retailer pushes nemesis well what about all the other books on his shelf? is he pushing all of them? does he somehow make more money off that book then any other?
i didnt see a good review for either battle for the cowl or ultimatum and yet they sold, in heaps. i havent seen a bad review for agents of atlas, yet they don’t sell.
this guy’s agenda isnt going to sway sales figures
honestly i bet he likes it

i think folks around found this place because we are a little picky in terms of our comics

          • The problem is that a retailer gave a shitty book an glowing review (maybe in order to move extra units that they would have otherwise not have sold). Now, what happens if say 20 customers buy the book because of this review and 15 of those customers hated it and now think this retailer is full of shit? It kills his credibility and customers not being able to trust their retailer is a fucking terrible thing.

            J.

            • cballsack says:

It works both ways, ya know. If you tell a customer that Bendis’s books are shit, but he buys it anyway cuz he’s a big Bendis fan and he ends up loving that book, then your credibility is destroyed as well.

There’s just no way to win.

  33. kurumais says:

can someone explain why LUCKY STAR manga is rated 13 and up please?
someone gave me a free copy and ive looked threw it but can find anything you would see in an average cartoon
its definitely not my cup of tea and was thinking about passing it on to my 10 year old cousin but not if there something wacky going on that i missed

    thanks

    • Mike F says:

I’ve only seen the anime. I’d say because the characters are young high school girls, there’s no real swearing in it, but they always reference the “moe” factor among other anime characters. Actually its a satire anime, making fun of the common otaku. Its funny, but I don’t know if the manga is better or worse or different or what…

  34. Edward2962 says:

I live within a reasonable distance from a couple different comics shops.I always check the $1 and 50 cents bids. There’s always tons of no adjective X-Men #1 from the 90’s. 15+ yrs later they STILL can’t get rid of them.

    • Locusmortis says:

I’ve heard tell of basements full of cases full of that book that schmuck speculators bought back in 91 or whenever it was. That book encapsulated everything that was wrong with comics at that time.

      • Edward2962 says:

I would have said that about Image (although I am guilty of buying Spawn and Wildcats),but I know what you mean. The speculator craze was good for some individuals, but ending up hurting the industry in the long run (like junk bonds, housing boom, etc).
Every once in awhile a 30-40yr dude will come into one of my stores looking to make money off his old collection. Whoever’s working usually tell the guy not to bother bringing them in unless the comics are from the 70’s, ‘cuz if they’re from the last 20yrs not only does the store have it,they have MULTIPLE copies.

One a positive note hip-hop was good in the 90’s.If you like metal, the hair bands died off,but the thrash bands thrived. Broadcast cartoons got good again in the 90’s..you could buy a 6 pack of beer and a pack cigs for $5.Ah,nostalgia…

    • rush says:

Because that X-Men #1 was so successful Marvel is going to do it again.

  35. Insideman says:

Back then, my retailer kept lowering his order for X-Men #1 (prior to making his final order– there was no FOC back then) the higher the orders kept climbing for X-Men. In the end, I think he ordered 50 copies. Every time he would sell out, he’d just drive over to another shop and buy as many as he needed to restock for 25 to 50 cents each.

  36. Insideman says:

    Deal Alert!

For what it is worth– Books a Million has all these DVDs for $6.27. Free shipping over $25 and they always have INSANE coupons that are easy to find.

    http://www.booksamillion.com/feature?cat=newbargain&ad=AD061310

Don’t blame me if most of these turn out to be crap!;-)

(Also, don’t use free shipping unless you are willing to wait up to ten days to receive something. I receive some boxes 2 days later and some 10 days later.)

  37. TheMSpot says:

Another question for the CCW nation, Do you think satire has a place in comics? Also, do you think you have ever come across a good satirical comic?

P.S. NO, Kick-Ass or Nemesis, I said good satire not ripped off pieces of shit.

    • AvS says:

It would be easier to list comic books that don’t use satire.

    • Edward2962 says:

I’m assuming you mean in mainstream/superhero type comics,’cuz there’s alway been satire in other comics from parody stuff like Mad,etc,to underground stuff of the 60-70’s,to alternative stuff 90-now.Not to mention newspaper strips, but off the top of my head…

      MIller’s 80’s stuff (DK Returns,Electra:Assassin,Martha Washington stories)
Steve Gerber (of course Howard the Duck, but also some of his Defenders work)
      Alan Moore (take your pick)
Don Mcgregor (Killraven, eventho it was a sci-fi there was tons of satire in it
      Dave Sim (Cerebus)
Various comics by Rick Veitch (Brat Pack is kinda gross, fair warning)

I’m gonna make somebody mad,but you say chucks of Mark Millar’s Authority run was supposed to satirical. And of course tons of little moments here an there.

    • cballsack says:

      Fred Hembeck, anyone?

      • Edward2962 says:

“Hembeck Destroys the Marvel Universe”! One thing I remember about Fred is the running gag about Brother Voodoo trying to get his own comic. And it only took 20 yrs!

        • cballsack says:

The funniest comic book of all time, in my opinion anyway, was Fred Hembeck’s “Fantastic Four Roast.”

    • TheMSpot says:

I ask, because whenever I read stuff from Millar and/or Miller. They say, it’s satire and I say it’s shit. I just wanted to guage what the nation thought. Oh, and Edward 2962 I noticed you through in Kilraven in you comment, I listened to your reviews of it on your YouTube channel, good stuff.

  38. Stamps says:

Well Jose you were right, Max Smith has officially won me over. He’s now my favorite Doctor by far.

I’m loving this season just in general, every part has been extremely well written and well cast. That scene with Van Gogh in the art gallery in “Vincent and the Doctor” had me a little choked up even. The writing is that good.

I hope Smith stays around as the Doctor for a nice long time.

  39. So…I was on CBR earlier today. On the “News” homepage they have a twitter feed going. At the top of the twiter feed (at the time) was Bendis’ newest tweet. In that tweet he used a meme that is almost a month old and is primarily being used on 4 chan. I guess I now know where Bendis does his “research” for what’s cool and hip with the kids now a days. This explains sooooooo much.

    J.

    • cballsack says:

I was in a comic book shop today and saw this on the racks. Made me think of you guys.

Could they make his name any bigger? Books about Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Alan Moore didn’t have name logos that ridiculously sized.

      • Grumble…I remember getting this in at the store when it came. We got one copy and it was a special order. Never restocked it and nobody cared.

        J.

        • SmokeyClocks says:

did you reserve the right to roll your eyes at this customer as he walked away, or possibly throw things at him?

          • I dropped an anvil on his head using a Rube Goldberg machine as he left the store. That seemed to work out pretty good. Hasn’t bought a Bendis book since…mostly because he is now brain dead. He prefers the works of Jeph Loeb now.

            J.

            • Insideman says:

Well, that’s good that he’s at least still buying shit, Jose. Somebody has too.

“People Who Buy Shit” (PWBS) also help pay the rent.

  40. manaconda! says:

metal gear rising trailer looks pretty awesome!

    • Mike F says:

It does. I just wish it wasn’t raiden. And Part of me wishes Kojima would go back to his earlier works. I mean Policenauts is an amazing story man.

      • Looks like Kojima is making a violent game aimed at Americans. Don’t think I like that at all. I’ll reserve judgment until I see more.

        J.

        • Mike F says:

O really? I only saw the stills and a really short preview. I still don’t know what its about. I won’t lie tho. I’m actually getting sick of seeing MGS games. 1, 2, and 3 were so good that clearly Konami is gonna milk this shit more than Marvel Milks Wolverine. Kojima himself is a talented writer and designer but his company still is at heart a company that needs money to stay in business. It won’t be long before new designers like the guys for Mass Effect and the always glorious David Cage (Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain) suddenly becomes the new God among gamers.

Kojima himself even stated he wished he could make more games that are as interactive as Heavy Rain is.

          • Well, the part where Raiden “slows down” time and cuts off the soldiers legs, then head, then the rest of his torso struck me as completely unnecessary. Xbots are gonna love that shit. Not me.

The thing I LOVE about MGS is that you can go through the enire game WITHOUT killing anyone. That’s usually how I play and makes it more challenging. Hopefully Kojima will offer us the choice to do so in Rising.

            J.

            • Mike F says:

I seriously hate the fact that its for 360. Jesus fucking Christ, that fact alone makes me not wanna play it now. I sold my 360 for a reason. (its a money pit, piece of shit, filled with assholes online) system.

And yes I love the moral choices about sneaky pass the guards rather than killing them. IDK, I just want the MGS franchise to take a break. Really, Kojima has done so much more which needs to be revisited…

              • Rising is coming out on the PS3 too but they are marketing it heavily for the 360, hence all the blood. It’s not an exclusive. Microsoft is paying Kojima some sweet cash I am sure in order for him to be at their press conference 2 years in a row hyping Rising for the 360.

I am more interested if Kojima will be at the Sony presser tomorrow and what if anything he will be previewing.

Overly violent games make me a kinda bored usually. But regardless of the violence if there’s a great story I’ll be there playing it.

I’ve never really liked Raiden but the image stills give him a little more personality. Part of me is really curious to play and see how it goes down.

                  We’ll see…

I wish I could remember why they were doing this.

Last nite, I was at Wal-Mart, and at their magazine stand, I went to where they put the comics. I saw they had the second issue of Ult. Avengers 2. I read it only cause of the Leinil Yu art, aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgh, it was even MORE boring than the 1st issue, well, Wal-Mart does live up to it’s name, were cheap, and we sell shit 🙂

God Damn Peter Molyneux is a joke. Does he ever live up to his word when he discusses his games?

Second thoughts on MGS Rising. I kinda like it. My only problem with mindless violent games is they get boring. Take GANTZ. That’s violent. That’s violence in the most hardcore fashion. As long as there is a good story, I think even with the constant “cut” aspect, it’d make for a new interesting challenge.

But there’s gotta be a story. If I get halfway thru it without a decent, motivated story then I’m returning it, no if’s, and’s or but’s.

Overall, I’ll give it a go.

I was watching a Trek rerun on BBC America and they had a commercial for the Fables comic book. That was pretty amazing. I’ve never seen a commercial on tv for a comic book before.

    • They showed it during Doctor Who a couple of weeks ago.

Absolutely ZERO problem with this ad as a whole… But apparently somebody did not have the rights to– nor did they want to pay for– any of the exceptional art associated with this series… As they could NOT have picked LAMER art to go with the voice-over (after showing the exceptional sketches during the initial introduction of the main characters at the beginning of the ad).
