So I just finished watching Punch Drunk Love, since Jose mentioned it in one of the other threads. Gotta say that it wasn’t my cup of mead. Weird movie about some weirdo falling in love with a person we rarely don’t get to know anything about. Okay, whatever. I don’t really get the good reviews it got.
And yet again we find ourselves in disagreement. Punch-Dunk Love is one of my favorite films of all the times…but then again I am a huge P.T. Anderson fan. You are not the only person I have met who hated it. Almost everyone I KNOW has also hated it. You guys just don’t GET it and I am quite certain of that. And people wonder why I think I am better than everyone else? 😛
Maybe you should go and watch whatever awesome Katherine Heigl rom-com movie you love again instead. /sarcasm (but not really) 🙂
I googled Anderson’s name and saw that he wrote and directed Magnolia. Figures. I couldn’t even finish that movie. Turned it off about halfway through.
Magnolia was very good. I liked Boogie Nights too, although I saw it on A & E so I’m not sure I got the full impact of that one. Anderson seems to have a little Robert Altman in him.
It’s okay if you like Dylan. Not a big fan of Todd Haynes (dir.) myself. Velvet Goldmine? *shiver* Sometimes these things get so self-reverential they’re in danger of disappearing up their own asses. If a movie can do that.
That is the #1 reason why I want to see it. She is also the only reason I am going to sit through that new Robin Hood movie. I would watch a 3 hour film that just consists of her watching paint dry.
Ha, you changed your zinging response from Daredevil to Katherine Heigl rom-com. Don’t think I didn’t notice. I can just picture you at your computer thinking, “Yes, that line will crush him even more!!!!”
He he. I have been drinking a bit. The Katerine Heigl joke came to me a little bit after I posted the DD response. I felt the need to change it. You are right though about me thinking “Yes, that line will crush him even more!!!!”
You’re a good sport about these sorts of comments though so I thought it would be fun. 🙂
Great clip by the way. That’s pretty much what I was thinking…in Kirk’s voice as well.
And if you are wondering why your comment didn’t post right way it’s because the blog marks any comment as spam that has a link in it that it doesn’t recognize. I had to mark it as “Not Spam” and then “Approve” it…and this explanation is all kinda boring but just wanted to let you know what was up. I’m cool like that.
I love PT Anderson. When There Will be Blood came out, a lot of people said it was boring but I saw some serious genius in that movie. I guess more people can relate with Quintin Tarantino or Michael Bay than they can with PT Anderson..
and Punch-Drunk Love really got robbed at the Oscars – no nominee for Adam Sandler?? -_-
I don’t think you should put Michael Bay and Quintin Tarantino in the category. Although I do see where you are going with this. I enjoy almost all PT Anderson films, I say almost because I have never seen Hard Eight.
I was surprised to find out that I actually liked this film. From the get go Sandler is pretty hit or miss for me, but this flick, he dialed it down and the film just works.
Still not so sure about the tiger scene though (o-6)
Ahh, that’s in my top ten. I understand why some people can’t get into it though. I just take it as a really simple Adam Sandler film done arthouse stylee. Just for the fun of it!
That’s kinda how I felt watching this. A simple Adam Sandler movie, done arthouse style. And you know it’s arthouse because there was shots of walking, strange lighting, and lots of pudding in it, just like Eric Cartman said. No gay cowboys, though.
Hated it. Weird movie about weirdos falling in love with a person we rarely don’t get to know anything about. Okay, whatever. I don’t really get the good reviews it got. And what the fuck is up with that Pizza the Hutt? What a freaky freakouted freak! And what is the deal with the Schwartz? 😛
Loved The Professional reference that you pulled off in the last video, Oldman makes that movie for me especially the scene in the bathroom with Portman and Oldman characters meet, CLASSIC.
Yeah, that would be the one.
I don’t know, I just can’t stand it. Mostly I think my hatred can be attributed to Keanu Reeves and his atrocious fake accent.
I just thought of another guilty pleasure movie that I could have included in that discussion last week: the Shaft remake with Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson was doing his usual loud thing, Christian Bale was great as that arrogant bigot, and Jeffrey Wright stole the show as Peoples, the latino drug boss.
HA! I totally forgot about this movie. I actully saw it in the theatre, it was terrible I’m not sure how you could want to watch this movie more than once.
I saw it at the show too.I remember thinking it was weird that Sam criticizes a cop for making a racial remark, but it’s Sam who pistol whips a black kid on the corner.I know the kid was supposed to be a drug dealer, but still..the message comes off as,insulting crimminals (bad),but beatings them (good). And what was up with the shout out to then NY mayor,Rudy? It was entertaining but odd.
I loved the Shaft remake. I saw it in the theater and was hoping it would lead to sequels. I do find it funny that the new Shaft was only 6 years younger than the old Shaft.
I’ll let you know when I read the trade next year.
I’m still sticking with Secret Wars. That’s what officially got me completely hooked on comic books as a kid. I was a casual fan before that, but that book made me hardcore.
I don’t know if there’s much competition really. Secret Wars is hellafun but really shallow in concept…COIE is just too much…I think it would be easier to list the really shit ones first to whittle it down to the good stuff.
But I do love Infinity Gauntlet…And have been meaning to check out Cosmic Oddysey?
Those were fun comics, but originally Madelyne was suppose to be a normal woman.I remember thinking “Yeah, they turned her into the Goblin Queen,so Scott doesn’t look like an asshole for leaving her AND THEIR BABY in X-Factor#1”.
I am game, it is going to be by Ed B. and I think in his hands it has a big potential, even if we don’t know yet exactly what they’re up to (looking forward to that). I think the two are a bit too early to judge, though I suspect we gonna see Beast act more like he did in Endangered Species.
1. I KNEW Beast would be in this
2. I love Brubaker, he brings a great street/noir sensibility to comics and Secret Avengers will be great.
3. Wonderman needs to be in this.
I was kinda hoping that at least one of the Secret Avengers had not been an Avenger before but I think the way the team is shaping up that they’ll all b former or current Avengers which while isn’t bad still makes the Secret part silly.
Agreed, Bucky is an integral part of Steve’s motivations and character, what would be a mistake is doing the Winter Soldier. Anyone else think it would be cool if the WWII part of Cap’s origin were filmed in black and white?
Let me amend that by saying it probably would never happen. If the majority of your film took place in that era, I don’t think you could get studio execs to go for it. Brief flashback sequences? Maybe. I could see them grading the film toward sepia or desaturating the colors or something.
Just remember, Bishop comes from 20+ yrs in the future. When he first met the X-Men,he had a jehri curl! And on the cartoon show it was a mullet! Is this what the future holds?
the put off was that each story was every week and in nearly every X comic kind of put me off. Bi-monthly would do for 2bh. Think I’ll just stick to Astonishing that seems a better story and its only once a month
Well everything that comes around, goes around.. who would have thought that bell bottoms would make a come back.. still waiting for my Tough-Skins to come back in style though =)
i think she’s sincere, but i think her victory is a pretty weak one. couldn’t he just get the “beta key shit” again or find it online? apologies to hardcore gamers, is this some kind of holy grail?
I cheated on one of my ex-girlfriends. She found out and was gonna tear up my first edition Watchmen comics as revenge. Astoundingly, her ex-boyfriend (the guy before me) convinced her not to do it. I owed him big-time for that. But I can imagine the conversation she had with him probably went a lot like this video.
So SHIELD #1 got a five-star review from Greg McElhatton over at CBR (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=2083). I haven’t read it yet, but I’m happy for Dustin Weaver. I know he was stung pretty hard by their reviews of some of his previous work. I’ll reserve judgement ’til I get my hands on a copy.
I liked it quite a bit. I’m very interested in seeing where Hickman is taking this story. There were a couple of cameos in there that took me by surprise.
I tried to read this week’s Doom Patrol and found it almost completely impenetrable. Not a new-reader-friendly issue. Gave it back to my friend after five pages. I’m not sure what you see in this series, J. Just a thought….
It IS NOT new reader friendly at all. I completely agree with you. I’ve been reading since the new series started so I haven’t had any problems with it.
To be fair, I did enjoy it the last time I got ahold of a copy. It was the issue that went into the strange history of the Negative Man. The art reminds me of old Erik Larsen with a dash of Walt Simonson.
This episode is so damn funny, Laughing so hard my wife has come downstairs twice now to tell me to be quite. The Chat roulette stuff is making my sides hurt.
From a struggling artist: You’ll take whatever opportunities come your way. Ash is something Elliott seems to know and so he’s run with it. More power to him.
As LittleKingRyan already said, yeah, Army of Darkness has become my ‘break in’ title. Hopefully with what I’ve done with AOD – in addition to my new monthly with Dynamite – I’ll be able to get more opportunities to write other things. :::eying Dark Horse’s Star Wars books:::
As it is, I’ve really enjoyed doing the stuff I’ve done so far. Ash is a fun character to hang out with!
ANNNNND…CBR’s one-star review of Deadpool Corps gives the comic one star too many (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=2085). If my dick was on fire, I wouldn’t use this book to put it out. Because I care about my member too much. And because this comic wouldn’t be anywhere near me.
yes but i havent finished 2nd series its up on hulu i have to get to it
i think they are doing a new one arent they?
they are top notch
btw “simon” was in episode of dr who where he was playing a kill or be killed version of weakest link which cracked me up when i noticed i love how number wang’s winning losing prizes get cazier and crazier
other brit stuff
i liked little britian but i must admit sometimes it gets way too gay for me
giles as the prime minister and tom baker as the narrator was pure genius
i like cathrine tate show quite a bit as well
one of things i love about british sketch comedy is the chameleon esque ability of these folks too look some completely different from character to character
dr who started with matt smith???? i thought it was starting for another week or so i dropped my cable package because basically the only thing i watch on tv anymore is sports so unfortunately for me no more bbc america
by the way C2E2 getting a couple of Dr who premiers im massively jealous
Jose, is the new Doctor Who newbie friendly? I actually have the first season of the Who relaunch(Eccleston) but I just haven’t got around to watching it. I’m falling victim to the hype and plan on watching it when it premieres April 17th.
I feel so uninformed when I come to this blog. I’m usually quite popculture savvy, but I’m lost when it comes to beta keys, current video games, and British television(other than Monty Python and Benny Hill).
well I was a Doctor Who Newbie when it first started and didn’t know much about Doctor Who but you catch on quick pretty quick. Like this new series its like a reboot you don’t have to have seen the last series.
It is kinda “new viewer” friendly though if you have been watching it for a while you will get more out of it. I talked Avi into watching the new episode and he doesn’t really know anything about Doctor Who. I did have to explain a couple of small things to him but he pretty much picked up on it quick and really liked the episode. That in itself is saying a lot because Avi has never liked Doctor Who before.
The one thing I did have to explain to Avi was the whole “regeneration” thing which is a big part of the episode. The new episode picks up right where the last episode with David Tennant left off so you may be lost for the first couple of minutes. You can just go onto Wiki and read into the brief history of the character to find out about Timelords, “regeneration”, The Tardis, Sonic Screwdriver and Psychic Paper (just to name a few).
When I got into the series a couple of years ago I will admit I was a bit lost and it did take me a while to get into it.
I’m OK then. I may not have seen a lot of Who before, but I’m familiar with the screwdriver, the Tardis, the regeneration, the 10 Whos before him(and Peter Cushing in a non-canon movie), the companions, and K-9.
i watched the eleventh hour online i thought it was just terrific!!!!!
very new viewer friendly new doctor new companion new creative team new tardis new everything this about the best jumping on point you could ask for
loved amy and liked her supporting cast rory and jeff right off the bat
matt smith was terrific so much fun
” i thought you were just madman with a box” ” I am definitely a madman with a box!!!
i found the last series under the guidence of russel t davies very much whedonesque not so much in characters or content but in the way the story was crafted how little moments ended up adding up to big moments and when they did you thought to yourself “how did a not see that coming!?!” and how the supporting characters grown on you with the story without taking any of the focus away from the main characters. if like joss whedon shows i would bet you will like RTD’s doctor.
we will have to see about steven moffats doctor but he is off to a great start
I need a ccw review of netflicks I haven’t rented a movie in years and I have fallen waaaay behind in my movie viewing and im feeling guilty about watching stuff on freeforview on the web. I hear netflicks is great how is the selection? When it comes to ccw type flicks? Comic book flicks? Martial arts? Kaiju? Sci fi? Fantasy?
Hows their indie film selection? And especially their foreign film and tv show selection?
Hows there cable tv show selection? I need to finish deadwood and start the wire and dexter.
I like Netflix. I use to have Blockbuster online, but I found it hard to get older movies and overseas flicks. I have been pretty happy with Netflix so far. They have a pretty large selection of all the weird, off the wall stuff i like to watch. They are pretty good about getting your movies to you on time. The only negative thing is it is hard to get the popular movies when they first come out, not really a big deal for me.
Netflix also has a lot of instant view movies, movies you can watch on your computer. If you have a good connection this is a good way to watch some movies without having to wait for them in the mail.
An yes they have TV series available to rent, but I am not sure if they will send you the whole season at one time, you might have to get them one disk at a time, which can be a pain in the ass if your looking to watch a whole lot at one time.
You know what I really am missing from comic books? Letter columns. I understand that you get an extra page or two of art if you eliminate the letters page, but reading the reader responses was one of the joys of reading comics for me back in the day. Besides, with all the decompression, multiple splash pages, and recycled plotlines, I don’t think two less pages of art would make much difference anyway. I wish they would bring the letters section back. Any thoughts, folks?
Word, I’m totally with you. I always read the letter columns. I just bought a copy of Avengers #97 from 1972. Found it on sale at an old bookstore. I thoroughly enjoyed the passion found in the letters column, the quest for a No-Prize, the in-jokes about Sol Brodsky or Marie Severin, etc.
I myself only wrote one letter. It was about an issue of Wonder Woman, I think shortly after Perez left the book. I believe they had WW working at a taco stand or something like that in order to learn about humanity? It was some stupid bullshit and I felt compelled to write in to tell them how they were ruining a great character, especially after some brilliant stuff from Perez and co.
That was issue #73 right? When they have her on the cover with the stupid hat and
she’s saying “It’s a living”? Definitely not one of WW’s finest moments.
While I understand that there isn’t really any need for letter columns since we have so many forums where you can actually interact with the comic talent(I had Dan Slott scold me for trashing Bendis on CBR), I’d like them to come back. They are a cool little time capsule when you’re reading old back issues just like all of the old ads are. I’ve only written 2 letters to a comic in my life(one to Dinosaurs For Hire and one with a drawing to Usagi Yojimbo) even though I’ve been reading comics since the early 80’s, but I still remember how cool it was to see them in print. That’s the one nice thing I can say about Spider-Man these days, they still have a letter column in Amazing.
Some Marvel books do still have letter columns. Amazing Spidey is one of them and Fantastic Four still has one. Jason Aaron’s run on Ghost Rider had one too.
There are lots of nice things to say about Amazing these days. The last few months have been excellent. They should be commended for having such a fine classic art style on the book. It’s good to see Amazing is once again Marvels flagship title
We’re going to have to agree to disagree. Even though I’m not a huge MJ fan, things seem to have gotten worse for Spidey since OMD than better, imo. I feel the art vacillates between looking like crappy indie work and dark Vertigo art. I also find the latest round of villains to be sad facsimiles of those who’ve come before. Top that off with their turning Peter into one of the Entourage guys and it makes me happy I washed my hands of Marvel if that’s how they treat their best character.
Worse than Norman knocking up Gwen ? Worse than the failed relaunch? Worse than the never ending clone sage that only ended by screwing up Spidey even more by returning Norman and Prof. Warren from the grave?
Latest round of villains? When was the last time you read a good Electro, Mysterio, Sandman or Rhino story? I found these latest ones interesting. If I saw that old fart Vulture again my pulse might drop to unhealthy levels. I actually find this new guy interesting.
Art? If you can look at Marcos Martin or Javiar Pulido’s or Lee Weeks Spider-Man and not see a classic Spider-Man drawn by a professional draftsman then I think you are a fool who’s opinion can’t be trusted on anything.
I miss Ron Frenz on Spidey. Very underrated artist. Nice simple style which really fit the book. I know he does Spider-girl but it just ain’t the same.
You can thank that same ugly piece of shit that gave us OMD for Norman knocking up Gwen.
I don’t know what relaunch you’re talking about since they’ve renumbered Amazing several times over the years.
Since he was dead before I was born, I’m happy they brought back Norman. I also feel there were a lot of good points to the Clone Saga.
So, if a good story hasn’t been told with a certain villain in quite awhile, a writer should then “create” a none too subtle clone of them in order to tell good stories? This is also the second time they’ve brought in a younger Vulture. Not very original.
Good thing your trusting my opinion isn’t necessary to post on this blog jackass.
Really? I’m pretty sure that the only time they renumbered Amazing was when the relaunched the Spider-Man titles in ’99, they later switched back so they could publish #500. I guess you don’t know this or know of other times they renumbered Amazing that are super secret Hickman-style conspiracies.
– You glossed over my point about Electro, Sandman, and The Rhino, When was the last time you read good stories featuring those characters?
-OK, They may have tried a younger Vulture before so another one is nothing new. But, Do you really want to read an issue of Amazing about Adrian Toomes again? Does he excite you as a character?
-That big headed Joe Q didn’t want Peter to have kids with Gwen that were little goblins. So JMS writes Gwen fucking Norman and that Pete never slept with Gwen, which really makes Both Pete and Gwen look pathetic. Way to overlook who wrote a turd of a story. For the most part, I found JMS first story to be exciting, but the rest of his run went downhill fast! Q has MANY faults, but it wasn’t his idea to have Norman knock up Gwen.
– I’m glad you enjoy Norman’s resurrection. Gwen was dead before you were born so they should bring her back too. The point you missed, was by brining back Miles Warren, they totally fucked up one of the cooler Spider-Man characters Carrion. Oh, lets not forget the ending of the clone sage made null the death of Aunt May in #400 and brought her back as well. There were some good points to the Clone saga, DeMattis’ #400 was one of those bright spots.
-Finally, If you can look at Marcos Martin, Javiar Pulido, Lee Weeks or Paul Azataca’ issues that are free of digital coloring tricks like textured color shading and photoshop action blur, and just enjoy a classic looking Spider-Man then I think you have horrible taste. I may be a “jackass”, but you should change your name to DumbAss.
Ok, It was Joe Q’s idea, but it wasn’t his story. It was his suggestion because he was rejecting JMS’s story. It wasn’t an editorial mandate like OMD. JMS could have done anything he wanted, but he choose to write the story that he did.
Facts mean nothing to some people, Locusmortis. Especially those who feel the need to insult you just because they disagree with you. This is why I left CBR’s forums.
After receiving a response to a throwaway comment of mine about the current Spider-Man book, I peacefully stated “we’re going to have to agree to disagree”. This led to me being called a fool. I didn’t start the name calling! You can look at every other post I’ve made to this blog to see that I treat others with respect until this time where I was attacked for no reason at all.
Fuck it! I like Jose & Elliott and enjoy CCW too much to let someone like that chase me away from this site. The thing about trolls is they eventually go too far and are weeded out. It’s just a matter of time.
I stand by the opinion that anyone who doesn’t like Marcos Martin’s Spider-Man is a fool.
You felt the need to call me a jackass. After a detailed response You have nothing to add to the conversation than taking your ball and going home. I think this is my que to not bother responding to any points you make. Feel free to post what ever you like in the comments section, i won’t bother with you again.
You can’t call someone a fool for having an opinion about artwork. You either like it or you don’t. Some people think Paris Hilton is hot, and some thinks she’s feral.
For the record, I do like Martin’s Spidey. I’m not crazy about the way he lays down some of the paneling, but I do like his artwork. I’m not a fan of panels within a larger panel, which is what everyone’s been doing since the 90’s onward. It just makes the page feel too cluttered.
I had a letter printed in an old West Coast Avengers.I was begging them not to turn Ultron into a good guy.Back then it was a way of feeling validated as a fan.I don’t want to start a Bendis rant but I think that’s part of the reason he does them the way he does in Powers. To kinda keep that old school feel. I think editors today probably just think “Ppl will just rant online tomorrow,so why bother?”
It was just one story.Ultron shows up and is like “Yeh,I’m over my anger issues” and Hank is all weirded out.Another Ultron shows up and says “You’re the defective one!I’ll kill you both!” Good Ultron says”Run,Dad!” and sacrifices himself in battle.Hank is sad and Wonder Man is looking all, “Dude,it was a robot”. As a young guy though,I was afraid they were going to wreck one of the good Avengers villians.
Yeah,I know it’s going to make me look corny but I did enjoy that Englehart run on WCA even though Milgrom wasn’t my favorite artist. And bringing it back to an earlier topic, for a few issues it seemed like they were trying to make Hank a bit like the Tom Baker Dr Who? With the big coat and the scarf? Anyone concur?
I enjoyed Englehart’s run as well. That was good stuff. The 80s was probably the best time to be a comic book fan. The level of quality back then was phenomenal. And you didn’t go broke picking up lots of issues.
Well, the 80’s had their share of bland comics but even when they did stuff for purely commercial reasons, things generally came out on time and you didn’t feel like the company hated you as a consumer. If there was an event it interrupted your favorite comic maybe a month. That was it. Can you imagine Countdown to Secret Wars, Secret Wars2:Embedded, Secret Wars2:The List, Secret Wars2:Secret Files, Secret Wars2:Dark Beyonder, Secret Wars2:The Aftermath? Be glad Jim Shooter didn’t have Joe Q’s business savvy!
Every era had their era of bland comics, but the 80s had such a wide variety of high quality. You had guys like Walt Simonson doing Thor, Gaiman on his Sandman run (plus all the other Vertigo titles), Dark Knight, Batman: Year One, Moore on Swamp Thing, V For Vendetta, and Watchmen, John Byrne on FF and Superman, Peter David writing Spider-Man, George Perez’s Wonder Woman, Frank Miller on Daredevil, Chris Claremont in his prime on X-Men, Mike Grell on Green Arrow, lots of great funny books like Spider-Ham and Groo the Wanderer, and the emergence of so many other comic book companies like Dark Horse, Valiant (loved Barry Windsor-Smith’s Archer & Armstrong), etc.
There was just a great mix of light and dark, escapist adventure and gritty reality. It wasn’t all one thing. Then the 90s came and the stories began to suffer and it was all about wildly “cool” art and marketing gimmicks with the hologram covers and what not, and then this past decade it’s been about “superstar” writers having free reign and doing whatever they want with the books and generally doing a pisspoor job of it. There’s lots more independent titles out now, which is great, but Marvel and DC are in really lousy shape, at least from a creative perspective. That’s just my opinion. Thank goodness the movies are decent.
And James Robinson is up for Best Writer for Cry for Justice and Justice League!? Batwoman gets almost completely snubbed. Williams is up for Best Artist and Best Cover Artist but that’s it for Detective.
These awards are obviously completely meaningless from this point on. When did the Eisner’s turn into the Wizard Awards? So fucking sad.
Old Man Logan and C4J, eh? And no love for Detective outside of Williams? This is perhaps the saddest post I’ve yet read on this blog.
So what do you think is behind these choices Jose? Are the powers that be scared off by the gay Batwoman thing? Are they favoring work done by recognizable names; regardless of quality? The mind truly boggles.
“To all who congratulated me for the Eisner nom, thank you. To all those vocally pissed that I got one, thank you too. The fact that you care enough about comics to have strong opinions at all is a good thing, ultimately. So bravo to all you Robinson haters, I love you all.”
Wow. And here I thought the Eisner’s were becoming a joke by snubbing Marko Djurjevic as a cover artist for the last three years and David Lapham as a writer/artist when he wrote a drew 16 comics last year. They are a complete total fucking joke from now on.
Whats the cut off for the awards anyhow? Some of this stuff was published after 2010. If so then Jim Rugg ‘s Afrodisiac was the biggest snub this year.
Maybe they’re trying to go for some of that Hollywood glory? You know..”Nenesis:The Movie, based on the Eisner award winning comic..” It might raise their profile a little? I’m just thinking out loud…
hey everyone,as J and E know im form Peru and here comic boooks are being published weekly, well theyve ublished almost all amazing spiderman since straczyinski frist story arc (originally published in 2001 or 2002)well, they hav epublished civil war and even one more day but now they ar epublishind one more day, theyve published the swing shift special and also the free comic book day special with phil jimenez. Now they are starting ot publish brand new day BUT, i theres a problem, the licenser doesnt know what to publish. Let me explain, they can either publish ALL brand new day and all spidey, or they can publsih certain parts, for instance they are talking to publishing directly NEW WAYS TO DIE instead of publishing the 20 issues beofre of it. By the way they have decided to publish the first dan slott story with mcniven.
The problem with jumping to new ways to die after the first arc is the amount of loose ends many will encounter. Some say they should publish certain stories like New ways to die, 24/7,character assassination etc until american son.
SO my question is this should they publish ALL the issues of brand new day or should they jump straight into new ways to die or certain sagas? many are asking the same so plz respond.
Ok, here’s what I think. Since Brand New Day started Amazing Spider-Man has been very hit and miss with me. I have certainly liked certain story arcs more than others. Now, that being said I think that it is probably essential to reprint the whole series from the beginning. Brand New Day rebooted Spider-Man continuity. People who were once dead are now alive, MJ and Pete never got married and new characters were introduced. I really don’t think you can jump around and only tell certain stories because readers will get confused at some point.
So, I would say they should reprint the whole series and NOT just certain story arcs.
Is it safe to say that Batman and Robin is the best DC book on the stands? Every month it continues to satisfy my needs, and for such a high profile book it ships on time. It even shipped bi weekly last arc. What are your guys’ thoughts?
After Williams left Detective Comics, I would say it is in the top tier of mainstream books. I personally wasn’t that impressed with Clarke’s art in issue 10, so I hope it improves once I pick up the latest issue. I just wish Frank Quietly stayed on it. I still like Wonder Woman, too.
I’d say as far as writing yes. The Tan art was so bad and it really hurt the story telling. I’d go as far to say that Batman has been the best book on the stands since Morrison took over (including B&R).
I would like to thank CCW for making me think I needed a blog, I hope I don’t get sucked into it like I did with Facebook. Or was that just the funniest South Park episode so far.
That was an awesome episode. I read your blog a couple of days ago and dug it. I put up a link to it on our home page here under “Friends of the Program.” Hope that was ok.

Brings back memories
What the hell was that move at 7:37?
Great clip!
As peerlessly awesome as that was, Jose, Chackie Chan isn’t the only one whos adept at the drunken fist. Enter Rock Lee! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5NjCwQ14UA
He He. That was pretty awesome. Here’s Jet Li using drunken fist boxing:
J.
That makes me miss the days when some Chicago UHF station used to play kung-fu movies every week.
Is the drunken fighting based on some Chinese mythology or is it just their version of Popeye?
J.
Mock me at your peril, woman.
I googled Anderson’s name and saw that he wrote and directed Magnolia. Figures. I couldn’t even finish that movie. Turned it off about halfway through.
Annnnd now I know exactly where you are coming from. Peasants don’t get Magnolia either.
J.
Ever seen Hard Eight?
Yes. I have it on dvd. Did you like it?
J.
Yeah, but I like all of his movies. I have at least four of them in my collection.
J.
Magnolia was very good. I liked Boogie Nights too, although I saw it on A & E so I’m not sure I got the full impact of that one. Anderson seems to have a little Robert Altman in him.
I like all of Anderson’s movies, but I must be a peasant. That ending for Magnilia almost ruined the movie for me. Fucking frogs!
You would probably like I Heart Huckabee’s or I’m Not There. On second thought, you might hate them.
Huckabee’s was alright but I haven’t seen I’m Not There yet. I plan to at some point though.
J.
It’s okay if you like Dylan. Not a big fan of Todd Haynes (dir.) myself. Velvet Goldmine? *shiver* Sometimes these things get so self-reverential they’re in danger of disappearing up their own asses. If a movie can do that.
I agree with your Huckabees assessment.
“I’m not there ” is worth seeing for Cate Blanchette’s Dylan alone.
That is the #1 reason why I want to see it. She is also the only reason I am going to sit through that new Robin Hood movie. I would watch a 3 hour film that just consists of her watching paint dry.
J.
Ha, you changed your zinging response from Daredevil to Katherine Heigl rom-com. Don’t think I didn’t notice. I can just picture you at your computer thinking, “Yes, that line will crush him even more!!!!”
http://www.entertonement.com/clips/lqnwrdnnkm–Star-Trek-II-The-Wrath-of-Khan-William-Shatner-Admiral-James-T-Kirk-Laughing-at-the-Superior-Intellect
J.
J.
Thanks. I was actually wondering if the thing on my lip is only a cold sore. But we can save that for the next CCW open thread.
That’s not a cold sore, my friend. That’s the Herps.
There Will be Blood has the one of the best endings of any movie, it’s perfect
“I drink your milkshake!!”
I was surprised to find out that I actually liked this film. From the get go Sandler is pretty hit or miss for me, but this flick, he dialed it down and the film just works.
Still not so sure about the tiger scene though (o-6)
i really enjoyed the movie
Ahh, that’s in my top ten. I understand why some people can’t get into it though. I just take it as a really simple Adam Sandler film done arthouse stylee. Just for the fun of it!
That’s kinda how I felt watching this. A simple Adam Sandler movie, done arthouse style. And you know it’s arthouse because there was shots of walking, strange lighting, and lots of pudding in it, just like Eric Cartman said. No gay cowboys, though.
Every time someone watches Punch Drunk Love Bill Cosby makes another million
Tbe kids love this one.
J.
Indeed it is a weird movie, that is why I love it, me and that movie have so much in common!
The Schwartz is something so big that I can’t really explain, there are kids reading 😛
I was just playin’. I like that movie a lot.
J.
I know you were, I just can’t miss a chance to make fun of myself 😛
RDRR.
J.
Loved The Professional reference that you pulled off in the last video, Oldman makes that movie for me especially the scene in the bathroom with Portman and Oldman characters meet, CLASSIC.
Gary Oldman is one of the best bad-guy actors ever.
agreed, except in that Dracula. That shit sucked.
I meant “that Dracula movie”
You mean Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula? That movie is the very definition of a guilty pleasure for me.
Yeah, that would be the one.
I don’t know, I just can’t stand it. Mostly I think my hatred can be attributed to Keanu Reeves and his atrocious fake accent.
yes you have to deal with Keanu but you do get tom waits as Renfield which more then makes up for it
Dracula sucked? 🙂
How did we go from The Professional to Dracula, DAMN YOU GARY ODLMAN!!!
DAMN YOU GARY OLDMAN TO HELL!!!
Punch Drunk Love is good but I tend to prefer Sandler’s more dramatic performances.
Yes, stop looking at all of us… swan, looking into our souls.
For its own safety, it better not be looking into my soul. The craziness inside is contagious.
I remember seeing this movie with a girl I was dating and when this scene came up…
…she said “that’s you!” I didn’t know if I should have felt proud or embarassed to be compared to a gibberish spewing Sandler.
Cuz Jeffrey Wright saying “Tiger Woo” makes my day.
I don’t know if anyone else used to love Gamefan but they’re starting up again.
http://video.playmagazine.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6427
In this age of instant gratification video game news 24/7 I just can’t be that excited about this.
BUT they did have the best quality screenshots back when it mattered.
Is Blackest Night the best comic event ever?
Matthew
I’ll let you know when I read the trade next year.
I’m still sticking with Secret Wars. That’s what officially got me completely hooked on comic books as a kid. I was a casual fan before that, but that book made me hardcore.
I don’t know if there’s much competition really. Secret Wars is hellafun but really shallow in concept…COIE is just too much…I think it would be easier to list the really shit ones first to whittle it down to the good stuff.
But I do love Infinity Gauntlet…And have been meaning to check out Cosmic Oddysey?
Really shitty ones? How about X-Cutioner’s Song? It does have some pretty decent Jae Lee artwork in the X-Factor segments, though.
Cosmic Odyssey is a cool old school cosmic story.Nice story by Jim Starlin and really fun Mike Mignola art.Brings back fun memories.
I’ve always liked Fall of the Mutants and Inferno.
J.
Those were fun comics, but originally Madelyne was suppose to be a normal woman.I remember thinking “Yeah, they turned her into the Goblin Queen,so Scott doesn’t look like an asshole for leaving her AND THEIR BABY in X-Factor#1”.
Ditto! And the Nocenti DD crossovers issues were great for both!
no, thats B.P.R.D
Oh yes it is 🙂
What does everyone think of the 2 new Secret Avengers reveals?
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=25616
I’m really interested to what exactly this book is going to be.
Ha!, I knew those pricks were cropping the picture to make it harder to guess who they were =)
But so far, I like the picks, always been a fan of Beast and War Machine.
IM
I was kinda hoping that at least one of the Secret Avengers had not been an Avenger before but I think the way the team is shaping up that they’ll all b former or current Avengers which while isn’t bad still makes the Secret part silly.
I’m actually getting excited for this one. I’m probably going to pick up the 1st issue.
This whole “guess the avenger” thing is fun.
bucky barnes is going to be in the cap movie
http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2010/04/this_mid20s_guy_is_captain_ame.php
im not sure the movie needed bucky i think its a risky move
If they’re doing the origin, he kinda has to be in it. I mean he is a significant piece of Captain America lore.
Agreed, Bucky is an integral part of Steve’s motivations and character, what would be a mistake is doing the Winter Soldier. Anyone else think it would be cool if the WWII part of Cap’s origin were filmed in black and white?
It would be cool, but in a big-budget superhero movie? Never happen.
Let me amend that by saying it probably would never happen. If the majority of your film took place in that era, I don’t think you could get studio execs to go for it. Brief flashback sequences? Maybe. I could see them grading the film toward sepia or desaturating the colors or something.
True, but I wish big budget Hollywood movies would go for something cool and quirky rather than pandering to the masses.
I do, too. But unfortunately commerce trumps art more often than not.
Yeah, agreed. it would be cool but they wouldn’t do it.
Sup folks
sweet new avatar you got there. heh.
our latest masterpiece is in your inbox, btw
Courtesy of LKR 😉
Nice Avatar Deemar =)
Thank musky oh and just so ya know you have several cameos in the up coming art
That will be interesting, as far as I know, nobody knows what I look like.
This video should help..
Thank god it ended there.
My drawing hand just got limp
That’s the best laugh I’ve had all day.
What do you mean no one knows what you look like IM? I’m watching you from across the street as I type this. Nice banana hammock by the way.
J.
Damn, if I had know, I would have shaved ‘I <> Jose” into my back hair =D
How odd.. I guess I can’t use brackets around my text. I will leave it up to you, Jose, to figure out what I wrote there =)
IM
Oh almost forgot, you want a personalized banner for your reviews thread?
Sure, if you have the time Deemar, I would appreciate it.
I’ll whip it up right away and send it too Elliot and also I’ll put it on Photobucket.
I’ll tag it (Ironmuskrat banner) check photobucket tomorrow around 4:00pm est
I’d like to color it.
Cool avatar.I’m staring to feel like the new kid at the party.Everybody’s coming in with high top fades and I’m still trying to rock a jehri curl!
Don’t lean on the sofa
Soul Glow!
LMAO
Oh…the 80s
Bad times for black hairstyles
I think we can amend that to all hairstyles.
forgot the mullett by bad
Just remember, Bishop comes from 20+ yrs in the future. When he first met the X-Men,he had a jehri curl! And on the cartoon show it was a mullet! Is this what the future holds?
Apparently, after a couple of beers I can no longer cut and paste. This is what I meant to show. D.Boon rules regardless….
I was wondering about that. It kind of made sense in my own couple-of-beers mind.
And: That’s basically the same story they’re still doing in the Cable comic.
Right! And you know I almost WANT to be excited about the return of Jean/Hope but the whole X-Men franchise for me has been so blah…
the put off was that each story was every week and in nearly every X comic kind of put me off. Bi-monthly would do for 2bh. Think I’ll just stick to Astonishing that seems a better story and its only once a month
I’m glad it’s ending
10 to 1 Cable takes a dirtnap in Second Coming.
If so,he’ll be back in a year.If not with a new #1, then as a reserve member of New Avengers.
Well everything that comes around, goes around.. who would have thought that bell bottoms would make a come back.. still waiting for my Tough-Skins to come back in style though =)
I’m ashamed too admit, but I do miss Hammer pants very comfortable
Too Legit!
They do what they wanna, say what wanna say, the Addams Family!
Is?…I..no..no..wah?..that..oh no..really?
Did I just…? Mine eyes!
They should wear pads, double pads really? I did not just see what I saw..
I have fallen in love with an angel. A foul mouthed, bitter, angry and somewhat unbalanced angel. Swoon…
J.
yikes
Never break up with a women that has a paper shredder that big!
Dude she’s you!
SOUL MATE!!!!
i love crazy vidoes like this but i kind of think most are them are staged
i think she’s sincere, but i think her victory is a pretty weak one. couldn’t he just get the “beta key shit” again or find it online? apologies to hardcore gamers, is this some kind of holy grail?
There are usually a very limited number of beta keys. Once they are gone they’re gone.
J.
My ignorance is showing…
I had no idea what she was babbling about, but she said it with conviction
I cheated on one of my ex-girlfriends. She found out and was gonna tear up my first edition Watchmen comics as revenge. Astoundingly, her ex-boyfriend (the guy before me) convinced her not to do it. I owed him big-time for that. But I can imagine the conversation she had with him probably went a lot like this video.
flipping eck my eyes bulged out of my sockets then. she deffo knew where to hurt. lol
ha ha oh my god that’s great! lol
J.
Are you taking about the two shield agents that show up Jose? That was interesting to see.
IM
Yes. That was who I was talking about.
J.
what a crazy first issue. i wonder how many people are gonna be pissed calling this a retcon but man it was really good.
wish the entier book was like the cover though. more paint style.
J.
Poke-Horrible
batman & robin eleven…….i think sexton isnt bruce but rather a future damien….still a good issue 🙂
definitely seems bruce would be too obvious….future damien? may-beeee
or at least a wayne ancester
I tried to read this week’s Doom Patrol and found it almost completely impenetrable. Not a new-reader-friendly issue. Gave it back to my friend after five pages. I’m not sure what you see in this series, J. Just a thought….
It IS NOT new reader friendly at all. I completely agree with you. I’ve been reading since the new series started so I haven’t had any problems with it.
J.
To be fair, I did enjoy it the last time I got ahold of a copy. It was the issue that went into the strange history of the Negative Man. The art reminds me of old Erik Larsen with a dash of Walt Simonson.
South Park is doing a Facebook/Tron episode right now. Pretty good so far.
J.
This episode is so damn funny, Laughing so hard my wife has come downstairs twice now to tell me to be quite. The Chat roulette stuff is making my sides hurt.
Littleking likes IronMuskrat’s comment.
IronMuskrat has added you to his friend list.
Does your wife not like you having fun…ever?
J.
You should have seen her today when I came home with my comics.. “you spent how much?’ =)
i enjoy doom patrol too, i been following since the new run and tho its the most hard to understand comic i read i still enjoy it.
i wanna know, why does elliot only write army of darkness related comics…
or why do i only ever hear about stuff like ash meets obama, kick ash..
any future ideas elliot? angela’s ash is(lame)
ash bandicoot?
army of darkness vs critters?please!
From a struggling artist: You’ll take whatever opportunities come your way. Ash is something Elliott seems to know and so he’s run with it. More power to him.
Mark Millar that you?
As LittleKingRyan already said, yeah, Army of Darkness has become my ‘break in’ title. Hopefully with what I’ve done with AOD – in addition to my new monthly with Dynamite – I’ll be able to get more opportunities to write other things. :::eying Dark Horse’s Star Wars books:::
As it is, I’ve really enjoyed doing the stuff I’ve done so far. Ash is a fun character to hang out with!
Elliott
if you get that hope you get some Luke and Han etc stories out I’ve only seen Star Wars in the far past or future stories.
ANNNNND…CBR’s one-star review of Deadpool Corps gives the comic one star too many (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=2085). If my dick was on fire, I wouldn’t use this book to put it out. Because I care about my member too much. And because this comic wouldn’t be anywhere near me.
whats with these dick medaphores all of a sudden???? lol
just doing my part. yes, my PART
Oh, haven’t you heard?
J.
I read Die Hard: Year One earlier today. It was meh.
i wanted to share two of my favorite crimefighters with the ccws
They have become two of my favorite too \o/
Dude, I love Mitchell and Webb. Do you watch Peepshow, Kuru?
J.
yes but i havent finished 2nd series its up on hulu i have to get to it
i think they are doing a new one arent they?
they are top notch
btw “simon” was in episode of dr who where he was playing a kill or be killed version of weakest link which cracked me up when i noticed i love how number wang’s winning losing prizes get cazier and crazier
other brit stuff
i liked little britian but i must admit sometimes it gets way too gay for me
giles as the prime minister and tom baker as the narrator was pure genius
i like cathrine tate show quite a bit as well
one of things i love about british sketch comedy is the chameleon esque ability of these folks too look some completely different from character to character
The woman who played Julie in that clip above was on the new episode of Doctor Who last week.
J.
dr who started with matt smith???? i thought it was starting for another week or so i dropped my cable package because basically the only thing i watch on tv anymore is sports so unfortunately for me no more bbc america
by the way C2E2 getting a couple of Dr who premiers im massively jealous
I don’t know jack about video games. I still prefer playing Tetris and shit like that.
J.
I’m OK then. I may not have seen a lot of Who before, but I’m familiar with the screwdriver, the Tardis, the regeneration, the 10 Whos before him(and Peter Cushing in a non-canon movie), the companions, and K-9.
K-9 has his own show now too.
J.
I heard about that. I also saw him in the pilot for the Sarah Jane Adventures.
didn’t K-9 already have his own show and was a flop in the 70’s :S
There’s a new one.
J.
i watched the eleventh hour online i thought it was just terrific!!!!!
very new viewer friendly new doctor new companion new creative team new tardis new everything this about the best jumping on point you could ask for
loved amy and liked her supporting cast rory and jeff right off the bat
matt smith was terrific so much fun
” i thought you were just madman with a box” ” I am definitely a madman with a box!!!
i found the last series under the guidence of russel t davies very much whedonesque not so much in characters or content but in the way the story was crafted how little moments ended up adding up to big moments and when they did you thought to yourself “how did a not see that coming!?!” and how the supporting characters grown on you with the story without taking any of the focus away from the main characters. if like joss whedon shows i would bet you will like RTD’s doctor.
we will have to see about steven moffats doctor but he is off to a great start
How about Balls of Steel? My personal favourite is Neg’s urban sports
Thank you
See IM’s comment down below.
J.
An yes they have TV series available to rent, but I am not sure if they will send you the whole season at one time, you might have to get them one disk at a time, which can be a pain in the ass if your looking to watch a whole lot at one time.
hope that helps
IM
it does IM thanks how is there anime selection ? i forgot to ask
thanks
It does have a animation/anime section.
how is it big ? small? meh? ok ? not bad?
do they have the american comic ovas like planet hulk and justice league?
thanks
It a large selection, I have yet to not found anime that I was looking for and they do have the all of the American Marvel/DC direct to video movies.
Throw some titles at me and I will do a quick search to see if it is available.
IM
dr who is nothing but awesome i cant wait
Yeah, I believe it was a Brian Bolland cover. Which was about the only good thing about the issue.
OMG, that is one of my favorite covers ever. I only bought that comic FOR the cover. Awesome.
J.
Dan Slott actually scolded you? Awesome!
Some Marvel books do still have letter columns. Amazing Spidey is one of them and Fantastic Four still has one. Jason Aaron’s run on Ghost Rider had one too.
J.
A fool!!
Enough with the name calling. Seriously.
J.
Can I still call people “poopiehead”?
Sigh…if you must.
J.
And with proof that even CCW isn’t free of agressive trolls, I bid this blog adieu.
It WAS Joey Q’s idea for Gwen to have Normans kids, JMS pitched that they would be Peter’s kids.
Was there a danger of turning Ultron good? I don’t remember that. Was it when he and Hank Pym were having that heartfelt talk?
It was just one story.Ultron shows up and is like “Yeh,I’m over my anger issues” and Hank is all weirded out.Another Ultron shows up and says “You’re the defective one!I’ll kill you both!” Good Ultron says”Run,Dad!” and sacrifices himself in battle.Hank is sad and Wonder Man is looking all, “Dude,it was a robot”. As a young guy though,I was afraid they were going to wreck one of the good Avengers villians.
Oh, right right. I do remember that story now.
That was West Coast Avengers #5 and #6. Back Issue Magazine had a feature on Ultron in their previous issue.
Agreed. The 80’s rocked. It was great to be a DC fan or an X-men fan then.
Old Man Logan is fucking nominated for an Eisner!? You have got to be fucking kidding me!? Holy fuck…
J.
J.
Tell us how you really feel.
Not happy.
J.
I’m not surprised. There’s a lot of idiots out there. of course bad things get nominated.
I AM however VERY happy to know that Naoki Urasawa got nominated 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 :):) 🙂 :):) 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 :):) 🙂 🙂
Williams better get the award for his category. If he doesn’t that when I’ll officially be DONE with the Eisner’s.
This is unfuckingbeliveable, do they not read the comics.
Maybe they want to be big (and crappy) like the Oscar now?
Old Man Logan and C4J, eh? And no love for Detective outside of Williams? This is perhaps the saddest post I’ve yet read on this blog.
So what do you think is behind these choices Jose? Are the powers that be scared off by the gay Batwoman thing? Are they favoring work done by recognizable names; regardless of quality? The mind truly boggles.
Is this any different from shitty Fantagraphics comics always winning the Harvey awards? These awards are always biased one way or the other.
James Robinson, on his Eisner nomination
“To all who congratulated me for the Eisner nom, thank you. To all those vocally pissed that I got one, thank you too. The fact that you care enough about comics to have strong opinions at all is a good thing, ultimately. So bravo to all you Robinson haters, I love you all.”
thats a pretty good response
🙂
Are you fucking kidding me
nominated for an Will Eisner
For Best Writer
James Robinson, Justice League: Cry for Justice (DC)
(Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap)
I am done!!!!
James Robinson is nominated for an award?!
There is no justice. God is dead.
I’m highly saddened.
Yeah I always thought the Eisner’s were going downhill…it had to happen sooner or later
any one reckon there should be CCW betting poll for who will win an Eisner, just for funsies lol
Maybe they’re trying to go for some of that Hollywood glory? You know..”Nenesis:The Movie, based on the Eisner award winning comic..” It might raise their profile a little? I’m just thinking out loud…
iv4e been trying to figure out a response to the nominations and im just baffled ive got nothing
hey everyone,as J and E know im form Peru and here comic boooks are being published weekly, well theyve ublished almost all amazing spiderman since straczyinski frist story arc (originally published in 2001 or 2002)well, they hav epublished civil war and even one more day but now they ar epublishind one more day, theyve published the swing shift special and also the free comic book day special with phil jimenez.
Wow, that’s a tough question.
J.
What is everyones thoughts on Invincible Returns #1?
P.S. I thought it was an awesome issue.
I thought it was great. Plus I like the fact that people who have never read Invincible could pick it up and get caught up on everything important.
J.
yeah I really liked the backup story. Since I started reading invincible at issue 66, reading that backup story really helped me get caught up.
the dr who fangirls are at it already 1 episode and they are already making 11/amy tribute vids
damn that was quick
It didn’t hurt that she was wearing a strippers outfit most of the episode 😉
it didnt hurt me thats for sure
Just Saw Ninja Assassin, i gotta say it was pretty good. Great action scenes and i still can’t believe JMS wrote it. What did you guys think?
I thought there was a bit too much CGI but it was ninjas tearing shit up. What’s not to like? 🙂
J.
J.
That was a awesome episode, and thanks for putting up the link.
Cool
